* have not reviewed some coz of IRL time constraints

BL novels that I have dropped or stopped reading due to them either being too boring, repetitive, triggering or not really worth completing in my personal opinion. It could also be coz I don’t have the ability to appreciate at the moment or I was just not in the needed space to enjoy them.

I’ve still rated them on writing style and plot, also translations of these are all quite good.

I may revisit reading them or may not... (I’ve indicated the likeliness of picking up novels again)

So I was aware of the r*pe tag when I started this but I wanted to understand why the reviews for this book were so controversial so I decided to give it a try.

I understand now why this specific book has varying degrees of scathing reviews. For some reason this book makes you feel really uncomfortable. Well for me it was a great sense of discomfort when I looked at the dynamics of the leads. It was like a Tom and Jerry sort of dynamic but I couldn’t for the life of me understand why the ML who is supposed to be a respected figure in the army, had such ludicrous reasoning and behaviour. I have never seen such a weirdly written character before. A review I read mentioned how OOC the ML’s childishness and I couldn’t help but agree with that comment. The one thing I kept asking myself was, how is the ML so willing to accept authority I’m the military but not in his personal life. It was very confusing.

The thing that made me drop this novel was how unrealistic the act, the reasoning and the reactions to the r*pe are in this book. It felt like the author tried really hard to romanticise the r*pe and that was what I found very uncomfortable. It was a very confusing and weird scene for me to read, I really didn’t know how to feel.

The MC is supposedly a mature and sane person who has good reasoning skills and a decent moral standing, yet he considers the r*pe to be an act of humiliation and not what it actually is, which is pure s*xual assault. He continues to antagonise the ML as a means of revenge instead of being like goodbye you unstable criminal?How is that a suitable means of revenge to still stomach the person who assaulted you? The scene described in the book would have at least caused some psychological trauma for the MC, especially with how his character is described. Even the most reasonable and calm characters with self-respect would be broken by being forced to withstand such horrific assault. I just found this scene being a catalyst to a relationship between the two as quite nonsensical.

I have seen this trope, the most famous being ErHa, however the r*pe in ErHa was not romanticised in my personal opinion and caused many issues in the relationship between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning that never allowed them to develop a healthy and sane relationship. That is the most normal reaction to assault. The setting and plot of ErHa also accommodated that assault and depicted the consequences and actions leading up to such unhealthy behaviour.

Some people compared this to Are You Addicted which was what drew me to trying this story, but it’s very different.

This relationship is antagonistic and difficult for me to stomach at this stage, I may revisit this novel at a later stage if I’m in the mood for that kind of pairing. <<less
