So I only decided to review because so far the similarities between "After I Got Married, Those Who Betrayed Me Were Reborn" and "The Way of the Empress" is pretty superficial. I don't really understand why people are comparing these two novels. Just give this story a shot and let it stand on its own.

although if you need to know how different they are one major difference is that the MCs are really different.

Spoiler

Like I would even go as far as to label the MC of this novel as a yandere. His bottom line would have been nonexistent if not for the ML. The ML is the light of his life. Not to mention this MC is a schemer. He actively takes revenge. Also, this MC is very proactive, he's the one who pursues the ML not the other way around.

While the MC in "After I Got Married, Those Who Betrayed Me Were Reborn" does not care about vengeance. He is cold and resigned to not have a good life because of being so used to everyone's treatment of him. He does not trust the ML in the beginning at all and only agreed to marriage to take his loved ones away from the cesspit that is his family.

[collapse]

I mean if you read enough novels you know that the MC's personality is really important because the majority of the time you're reading from his point of view. <<less

this is one of those novels that doesn't particularly require a lot of critical thinking. The plot is predictable and the some of the characters are very 2D and get face slapped every other chapter. This novel is full of cliches and is ultimately a love story of two people who become soulmates.

but to be honest, I love this novel with all of my heart. I don't care if it's full of certain plot holes, or if it's cliche as hell. I'm so tired and I want to feel good.... more>> I want to read something sappy where the protagonist rises from the very bottom of society and works his way up. I just want a cheesy love story. I'm so exhausted with all of these angst novels (even though I'm addicted to them) that sometimes I just want a sweet, loving, and compassionate romance--that's exactly what this story is about. They are in love and it makes me so happy. <<less

This story should tick off all my boxes but something went horribly wrong and it became one boring piece of flat bread. I can describe this writing style only as immature and it is not my cup of tea. This writer just tells you how awesome everything and everyone is but you will not feel it.

So I made it only to chapter 59 and abandoned this novel. Not because the characters are too horrible or such but simply cause the writing style annoyed me and it was too boring. As... more>> I said it feels immature and as if I was thrown into the mind of someone with 8 grader syndrome. The characters are too OP... don't get me wrong, I do like novels with op characters but I do need the feeling that they actually did something for it. In this novel I had never the feeling of " leveling up". It basically is a chain of "reason this character needs a face slap", next chapter face slap... also it doesn't feel powerful.

All the drama is just so so and the story lacks reason. The MC is set up as this bright and scheming guy that can outsmart everyone but his "word battles" aren't even on the standard of normal conversations... it feels like teenager quibbling. The story progresses in short bursts of OPness and is filled in between with lots of blabla and netizen comments that are just boring.

I can see that some people might be ok with this kind of story telling and the characters themselves are also ok. The world building is somewhat lacking. For fairness sake I still gave 3 stars but for people that wish for a world that draws you in to immerse you in its story.... this is not it. <<less

This is from the author of the "After I Got Married, Those Who Betrayed Me Were Reborn" and I highly recommend you read that instead.

Why?

Because this one reads like a prototype of that novel. A lot and I mean a lot of things from this novel was used in AIGM (even the set up: MC has to marry a disable prince bc of his scum brother). But here the plot is not balanced. Like here the first 20 chapters are sorely about MC dealing with his scum family (getting revenge... more>> for his mum - does that ring a bell?) - with no appearence of ML. And once he is done, his family is never mentioned.

And this is the main problem of this novel: no intwresting overarching plot. Once MC and ML get together nothing interesting happen. And they get together really quickly.

So yeah, a younger and edgier version of a really good novel (at times embarrassingly edgier).

If you haven't read AIGM Go and read it instead, and if you have - this novel has nothing that will surprise you.

(I am dead serious: I am 100% sure this is not the author self repeating, but them realising that they did not realised a potential of this story. Go read AIGM if yot haven't yet). <<less

+1 to the person who said this should've ended in 60-70 chapters. I'm not reading past ch65.

The main romance is extremely cute. I'm very sick of stories where the ML is supposed to be disfigured, wheelchair-bound, etc. But it turns out: (1) he was faking; (2) his disability is used an excuse to give him a twisted and cruel personality; (3) the MC only likes him after he's "fixed".

The story still somewhat follows the formula of ~curing disability~ which is a let-down, but not unexpected. At least where I left... more>> off, the ML is still allowed to be disfigured. There are hints he might get cured later on, but I will pretend I do not see it. I also really liked that the ML is described as average-looking before his disfigurement. Of course, this is somewhat leveled out by the exhaustive descriptions of the MC's flawless beauty, but it's much less grating when paired with an unglamorous love interest. (I've read so many descriptions of peerless calamitous etc beauties in CN novels, my eyes have grown callouses. Even if I was a face-con, which I'm not, what is the point of describing a beauty I cannot see? It drives me crazy that these novels are so allergic to normal or ugly MCs & MLs when it has no benefit in a written format.)

The political intrigue is carelessly written to say the least. The author will vaguely summarize major events like "Zhuo Yang cleaned up the Zhuo family, and the nobles waited to laugh at him for making the mistake of using his maiden family, but the Zhuo family stood up and they couldn't laugh at all." Like, what? What even happened here? There's absolutely no description of what the Zhuo family actually did. A huge portion of the politics is described in this manner.

The guide verse aspect is extremely confused - sentinels are introduced as strong individuals with overly sharp 5 senses, and guides soothe their overstimulated physical senses. But we never see sentinels having sharp physical senses; instead, we see sentinels being espers with quantum beasts (who seem to be pointless mascots?), and the role of guides isn't to soothe sentinels' physical senses but to calm their spiritual seas. It's mentioned in passing that guides have pheromones like omegas in ABO and go into a kind of heat? There is an mpreg set-up, but it's left totally unexplained how or why or which 2 men can have kids? In short, the author mashed up a bunch of settings picked up from other stories without regard to whether or not it made sense.

Flaws aside, I do recommend this story for the romance. IDK why it's so hard to find stories where the ML is loved for having a heart of gold, not being the strongest or prettiest or whatever. 3/5. <<less

The story is dominated by netizens' comments over the internet/social media. Basically the initial part of the story is narrated through shallow and cringe worthy comments posted by netizens.

There wasn't much of story telling in terms of the actions and characterisation of main characters, rather there is just an overwhelming wall of text by netizens who are so easily swayed. One moment they are supporting character A, the next moment they are supporting character B. Everything is so superficial and the antagonists are so brainless while the MC is just... more>> "perfect" in every way. It's just tiring to read after awhile. The characters don't even have to do much and public opinion just changes with the snap of a finger. Sure, the main characters are devoted to each other and their interactions are very sweet, they are an unproblematic couple. But the story is just extremely bland and boring. I'd compare it to eating plain bread. What kind of name is "Moodys" anyways? <<less

Gosh I almost missed out on an awesome read because of negative reviews 😭♥️ loved this. The development felt very similar to a few romance paperbacks I've read mixed with the very unique taste of danmei and translated work.

Edit: 3/1/23 been a couple of months since I first read this. Decided to reread because one of the similar arranged marriage novels I'm reading isn't yet finished getting translated. Reading this reminded me why I loved this in the first place. I love the MC. Yes they're extremely beautiful but... more>> I love when the MC knows their strengths and uses it to their maximum advantage. Like, yasss queeeeeen lol <<less

4.5 ⭐ I have a lot of fun reading this. The plot isn't boring and, in fact, better than I expected. The author is thoughtful, and the story is well planned out and not too complicated.

Overlooking the romance and constant PDA of the main couple, this novel is about the power struggle and in-house fighting of two pitiful and ill-fated children. There were many schemes and plots, as well as face slapping. Although not extraordinarily impressive, the MC handled those who mistreated him very well. He is self-reliance, strong and... more>> smart. Growing up in a house where the patriarch treated guides as merchandises yet he can still survived to marry a man of his heart, he has my respect. He is very competent and sophisticated in his schemes. It's interesting seeing him manipulating people around and pretended to be a pig from times to times.

meanwhile, the ML is quite the opposite. Despite also being an excellent person, he is more benevolent and gentle (and fortunately not too soft-hearted). He has perfect personality and the temperament of an ideal prince. So good. He also pampered MC a lot. The couple is sweet and adorable together. They communicated well, and there was no s*upid misunderstanding I was originally worried about considering MC's fox-like personality.

However, the story might appeared a bit plain in the middle since the main couple was already settled and the 90% of the villians were too s*upid, but overall, it is still very decent and enjoyable, especially the plot towards the end which were really fun. It's a pity there's no extra.
Spoiler

the final boss had such a deep scheme. Seeing every villians so far acted like a fool, I was not prepared for an appearance of someone so worthy of the villian title. It's a pleasant surprise.

[collapse]

The only thing that irked me is that the author was very focused on external appearances. I lost count how many times MC was praised to heaven with his unreal beauty, and ML was jabbed because he had just mediocre face. Was that necessary? It isn't funny to me.

anyway, don't just trust the rating, and give this novel a go. It's worth it. <<less

When I was reading it there was a nagging feeling that I have read it before. And when I get back to the page I learned that its the same author. From trope to plot it's like everything is the same except this was sentinel-verse. At first, it could really look like a prototype for "After I Got Married, Those Who Betrayed Me Were Reborn" but soon it became its own largely due to the characters themselves. You could think of it as how two different couple tackle on a... more>> similar plot but in their own style/personality. IMO the similarity is only obvious at the first arc but eventually branched out on its own.

I like the cunning MC. And TBH I think the description of his beauty is just right. I have read a lot of het novels that seriously exaggerate the beauty's description and this is normal in comparison. MC's most striking feature is his scheming mind that is restrained by his love for the virtuous ML. ML is the ideal prince and future ruler one could imagine as: Benevolent, Righteous and wise. Together, they are like yin and yang, complementing each other, covering dark and light paths of ruling. I like how the couple strive to break the stereotypes individually. MC demonstrates that guides should be independent and not rely on sentinel machismo. As for the ml, he cared for all people sincerely and is a great man contrasting the corrupt royalty that is deteriorating since his grandfather's generation. And he intend to cleanse the royalty and set them up straight too.

Spoiler

There is no literal mpreg but interstellar is sufficiently advanced to create a test tube baby for two male couples. MxM wedding is also legal. Child is only mentioned at last chapter

[collapse]

All in all I'm satisfied with the ending. Add to that the things unique to Sentinel-verse like "spirit beast" appearing every now and then is pretty cute. It has long since stopped being a clone of another novel and I enjoy what it has to offer. Also, finding out the difference between this and the other author's work is an (additional) entertainment on its own. <<less

It was ok and I really tried to finish it, but there really isn't much to it tbh.

Plot and premise was supposed to be ok and the characters especially MC is the complicated type, I guess it was in the delivery of the author that made it cringey and rather flat. Like other readers said, the story likes to speak all these amazing things but you can't feel it. It describes the MC in this kind of side but shows the other.

+tl needs an editor. It really isn't that distracting... more>> for me since I can filter out things automatically but some readers might be put off by it. <<less

After reading hundreds of casual webnovels, a person gets used to glossing past a bit of imperialist singing, but this one kinda crosses the line for me. The author is fairly unthinking about methods of handling institutional injustice; it's probably safe to say that their opinions reflect that of an average Chinese subject who is satisfied with the CCP's current methods of coping with justified dissent, through hard censorship or soft coercion or otherwise. Of course, this stuff isn't what you read for -- most people are here for sweet... more>> interactions and face slapping -- but it does colour the quality of the story quite a bit, especially given the Chinese literary habit of representing their socially conformist evaluations as absolute facts, with weak attempts at balance. Add in the flat characterisation and flat writing and you have yourself a fairly cheap opiate, written by an average person with an average imagination. Two stars. <<less

A strong-willed and scheming MC with a righteous ML. Look out for schemes and conspiracies, because it's very abundant in this novel.

It's a really good novel that focuses on revenge and scheming. The romance is just right (not too overbearing nor lacking), and I enjoyed the twist and turns of revelations in this novel.

From just the summary, it doesn't seem like much, but then as I continue to know more, I feel distressed about the MC and ML's experiences. Just one wrong move and they're done. Finished. Especially... more>> the MC. If he wasn't skilled enough and scheming enough, he'd be pitted so much by his f*cked-up paternal family.

The whole premise/idea of this novel is actually intelligent but the Author's execution of the story feels a bit lacking. When giving clues or foreshadowing, it's actually too easy to guess what'll happen next. I guess from the ideas about this novel that the Author has given, it gave me expectations that there would be mindblowing bits. It might be the flaw of having "intelligent" ideas, which is raising the reader's expectations too much, but that's the challenge of using this kind of trope.

Another reviewer said that this is like a prototype to another work of the Author, but I haven't seen that work yet so I can't comment on it. Still, I'm intrigued with this story and I have hopes that the flaws in this novel would have been lessened or removed in that particular novel.

This novel is still amazing in its own right and I would like to rate it a 4.7 / 5.

And a small excited rant before I end the review:

Spoiler

IT WAS SO OBVIOUS THAT THE MALE GUIDE WAS THE ML'S UNCLE!!! It was especially obvious when the "male guide" stated his kill list. It was only his name that wasn't listed there, plus when he said that the past emperor (the one who f*cked up and spread the virus) wasn't successful because of this and that, who else would have information about that?

Also the fact that this uncle, Dean Bricania, said that he loved Marshal Xue was also a red-flag. You'd feel it when you read those scenes. There are so many points in the novel where you can see these clues. What gave me dissatisfaction was that the MC said that he doesn't have a bad feeling about this Uncle Dean when the MC's intuition saved himself so many times. It was like a deliberate concealment from the author to make us think that this Dean isn't the culprit, but it actually made it more suspicious. There are points like these that are in the novel. That's why I say that premise is interesting but the execution isn't so good.

I read it via Google translator after chapter 48. Understandable

•Smart & Cunning MC, obsessed with the ML

•Kind, righteous ML

... more>> •Face slapping

•Conspiracies

•Mystery, a little bit of thrill

Plot :

Romance is there but not main focus, Main plot is about empire rebuilding, bringing the change in society.

It's kind of slow or boring around chapter 60, so much so that I wanted to drop it BUT it's good later on. Thus the main plot begins pacing up in 2nd half.

If we look from modern society's perspective this novel focuses on equality (gender, poor-rich) etc.

Conclusion :

Recommended

It's a short novel despite having 100 chapters. I think because the chapters are comparatively short. <<less

This reads a lot like, "After I got married, those who betrayed me were reborn", at least for ML's part/set-up. I wasn't aware of the fact that both have the same author and came to know of this from the previous reviewer.

Similarities:

Spoiler
  • Both the MLs are disfigured/disabled respectively and the MC heals/soothes them with his mental powers.
  • MC's background is also pretty similar, with a cruel step-mom and brother, irresponsible dad, and made-to-go crazy (mad) mom.
  • Both of them are in interstellar set-up and MC is in mecha research dept.
  • There is this crazy sub-plot which just gets inserted in between which you'll feel like, "That wasn't necessary " and all of a sudden the emergence of the villain boss w/o any signs previously.

There must be other similarities which I can't recall for the time being since I read After I got married a few months back.

[collapse]

Differences:

Spoiler
  • After I got has an alpha-omega set-up where as the way of empress being sentinel-guide.
  • In After I got the villains get reborn but in this one, there is no rebirth sub-plot.
  • The MC in way of empress is way more cunning and cruel who uses everything as his stepping stone to get what he wants.

I read this novel last night until today and indeed, I agree, it has similarity story line of "After I Got Married, Those Who Betrayed Me Were Reborn" but if you'll ask me which one is better I dont know the answer. But I still prefer this novel with a lot of description/ story plot about their empire and as well the history. This novel not only focus with the MC but also to other people which is for me is thumbs up. The MC is not a reborn person... more>> and not also a transmigrated. It really explained his miserable life and how he overcome those obstacles. Honestly, I liked the MC personality, his character was really hooked me to finished this. At the end we are only human, our nature will instinctly lying for survival. No matter what, never give up your life to fate rather you initiate to change it. <<less

Fun characters, delightful romance, surprisingly progressive??? Pretty formulaic and obvious plot with lots of random plot contrivances but you feel some tension when the characters are in danger anyway. It doesn't do that thing that a lot of BL novels do where every woman is tr*sh and the love interest gong is the only one stronger than the MC- in fact, MC is stronger than his hubby and he campaigns for women's rights-and it actually has a (kinda lukewarm but this is a faceslapping BL novel so, , ,) message... more>> about purity culture and social progress that's incredibly progressive for most Chinese BL novels. Definitely appreciated the actually fleshed out characters, and no weird dubcon stuff between the main couple. One star off because every plot twist (except the wormhole) could be seen a mile away and the deus ex machinas were falling from the sky like snow (random anticlimactic wormhole??? What????) Overall an enjoyable read and well translated. <<less
