I Shall Be Everlasting In the World of Immortals

Lan Chang’an has gone through two lifetimes of reincarnations, and in the third life, he aimed for stability until reaching the Nascent Soul Realm in hopes of unraveling the mysteries of the Nine Seal Stele. Consequently, he cultivated the Ancient Trees Evergreen Technique, which wielded modest power in return for greater lifespan.

His approach is not one of fearlessly engaging in battles, but of navigating with steady precision and forging meaningful bonds with others.

Throughout his long cultivation journey, he encountered individuals at various stages of their cultivation, including a Decent Faction Head, a Prodigious Beauty, a Giant Demon Lord, an Evil Cultivator, a Thousand-Year Old Demon, and a Puppet Master Pulling Strings From Behind The Scene.

Observing the ebb and flow of the world, witnessing its ups and downs, he unknowingly became a living fossil in the realm of cultivation, akin to an evergreen tree spanning through eternity.

In the world of mortals, the flow of life is steady, shrouded in the illusion of longevity, yet decisions are made decisively, with a clear sense of morality.

The protagonist is rare in that he is not afflicted by the lack of common sense that plague the heroes of xianxa novels.

Let me share my favorite line of thought from the protagonist that strongly resonate with the above sentiment:

Spoiler

If he had connections but kept them hidden until he ran into trouble, he could definitely use them to put on a show and humiliate people. However, he might also end up creating grudges and drag Zhao Siyao down with him.

That kind of irrational, immature behavior, Lan Chang'an naturally would not do.

[collapse]

The one-star bombers are obviously face-slapping obsessed readers who care not about the absurdity of how such nonsensical situations arise, but rather in the satisfaction when they subsume themselves in the identity of the idiotic protagonist. If this novel is not for you, grow the fvkc up and move on to the next garbage novel to offer you a temporary escape from your miserable lives. <<less

The thing that brings this story down is its apathetic protagonist. There’s always this sense of disconnect between him and everyone else. Like he doesn’t really care about anyone else. Even his interactions with friends feels mostly transactional and performative. I understand that’s the vibe the author is going for, but it’s really hard to empathize with or like a protagonist like that. It makes him seem less human, almost sociopathic.

5 stars to boost the algorithm but the story is more like 3.8 or 4.

Looks promising, nothing much has happened yet but as an old reader, I can't find fault with the main character's way of handling things. Give it a read, you might like it, though there aren't many chapters out right now.

I have been reading this novel for quite a while, and I have to say it is a nice change over others. The MC is mature, the cheat is not overpowering like some system, and the hero does not practice a technique so overpowering it will kill above two levels.

Many said they disliked how detached MC is from the world, but realize that it is closer to true Taoism. Also, what do you expect of a millennia-world old monster? Behave like a kid, get all worked up over every small... more>> thing? The MC likes to be part of the world, following the same rules as others, only more fortunate.

If I have to say something that is not right in it, it is the slow pace and the detachment MC has towards his own love interests. But the slow pace did allow for some good world building.

One of the things I am most afraid of in Xianxia novels is lack of respect for cultivation. Like, we would think a nascent soul level is very great and lofty in the beginning, but when the time comes, they are as common as chickens and dogs and get no respect. This novel does not have this flaw, and that honestly keeps this close to top of my list. <<less

A very good and very-out-of-norm xianxia novel.

The MC started at the lowest level cultivation level. Step-by-step struggled to be stronger in the world of the extremely wild cultivation. The world which every cultivator was ready to backstab, rob, kill, sect anihilating. The world which had scare essential resorces which if one wanted to be advance, one had to use any measure to get it.

The world which the vital resource, the spirit vein, was own by the sect. The cultivator had to live in its field just to stabilize the... more>> cultivation level. To advance, the better vein was the must. But there was no free and vacant spirit vein, especially the good one. What should we do? What should we do?

Kill! Kill the previous owner. Rob and kill the rich, backstab your partners for their belongings. That's the norm.

Worst, this cultivation world had the fatal set up : the life span was very limited. If one could not advance in time, once passed the prime young age of that cultivating stage, the path was cut. You are already dead. No second chance. As a lowly rogue cultivator, what should the MC who had no cultivation talent, no backup elder, no sect to start with, do? Not only having such the beggar-level background and foreground, the MC's Dao was - no fight, no confrontation, no enemy, no relative, no lover, no karma binding. How he could survive, able to practice, get the essential resources, able to advance and live long enough?

No harem. The beauties came and gone, one by one. One after one. No hate, no love, no karma bonding. The pure heart s*x partner. Love and beauties were nothing but objects to reduce the stress of loneliness in decade-long cultivating.

No enemy. Making enemy will cause you to be the center of public attention. That's against his Dao.

Fight against the stronger. Absolutely not. MC was not the prodigy. Such actions are reserved for the sons of heaven, not the MC. Beating the weaker is the right path. Stealthily ambush the weakers through carefully planned operation, which at least 90% success chance, is the right action. The 50-50 chance should be abandoned. Openly hidden behind the bigh thigh for decades is the must. Flying away immediately at the premonition of the impending danger is the norm. Direct confrontation is the crime. Fighting the stronger is the unforgiving sin.

These differents could make you puke your essential blood. The author makes it worse. While the world was spinning very fast, the MC's life was very s l o w w w w w. Turtle crawled faster than him.

Interesting, eh?

Now the real bad part of this novel.

Spoiler

The author is the master of word filling ! Many chapters are filled with #1, #2, #3 info dumps & reasons. In the later chapters, the overt lengthy flash back.

All are inserted stealthily. Coupled with the slow pace of the MC, his karma-severing life style, these word-filling passes most people's attention quietly.

The MC is quite steady and calm, which I like.

It can be a bit annoying how apathetic and detached he is, but in my opinion it makes sense to avoid getting too close to others too early.

After all, his Cultivation technique increases his lifespan more than others, so it would be s*upid to find love and get married, since his wife and children wouldn't have as long a lifespan as him.

Besides, it's mentioned multiple times, that he had family in his past lives and in this one he just wants... more>> to focus on cultivation.

I honestly don't understand why people give this novel 1 star reviews. If you want face-slapping, there are more than enough novel for you to read.

There's no need to give a 1-star rating to this novel, just because you don't like the slower pace. <<less

I've read until chapter 81.

The main character (MC) prioritizes maintaining ties and friendships over the years while hiding his true powers. This approach is somewhat new to the genre, making it a fun read so far. Despite living his third reincarnation (which is suggested to be his last) and not achieving much, he has not lost his humanity and knows how to take advantage of his experience.

Other than that, the MC is a typical low-key character who almost never faces real adversity, as he always seems to have many tricks... more>> up his sleeve, especially when a stronger enemy tries to kill him. He always looks young. His cultivation technique is very slow but grants a longer lifespan, and his cheat, other than being reincarnated, is that more lifespan equals more mana.

The friendships he maintains are typical: a dumb farmer sidekick who respects him, a female lead (FL) who has talent and gets into the sect but still chooses to be gentle with the MC, and previous companions. Additionally, the side characters don't just appear and disappear after five chapters, which is nice.

**Why I enjoyed this:** I haven't read xianxia in a while after reading so many academy-villain-extra KR novels. The pace of the story wasn't bad. I liked the MC's immortal cheat, his networking mindset, and his good morals and loyalty. He tries to survive in his own way and lives. The build-up with different characters and the political battle between clans created a nice tension in the story. It's a rogue cultivator story.

**What I didn't like:** The lack of adversity isn't something I should complain about since this is a basic webnovel where the MC is classically portrayed as weak but always easily wins any confrontation without any bad consequences or sacrifices. But it's not like we read webnovels for that anyway. Another thing is that the author felt the need to explain aspects of his story in some chapters in the author's note. If you have to explain your intentions or the subtle actions of the character, that means it wasn't well written enough. The story should be self-explanatory on its own. The fact that every time a enemy appears and it is a woman she's either fat or ugly (nothing new here though this is wn shouldn't be expecting much).

There might be other stuff but that's it for now.

Spoiler

**Summary of the story** (this is for me if I decide to come back to this again later) : After failing a sect's test because of his age, he joins the Mu family, which needs males to help breed more cultivators. He refuses to marry anyone and chooses to stay low-key as a talisman master. He rejects the young lady from the family, then leaves the family on good terms after being a parasite. He then moves to a big city and tries to become an alchemist. He takes advantage of his relationship with the FL, which he has cultivated over the years, and she ends up trusting him. She is from the sect and is at the core formation stage. They fight together in the forest against some demonic beasts, and he ends up saving her. She kind of likes him. He is farming and trying to gather enough loot to obtain the ingredients for pills that will help him pass the core formation stage. Meanwhile, the Mu family is defeated, and his sidekick friend, who had many children, chooses to hide secrets from the MC to avoid worrying him.

A very low-key MC. He is very human, both for good and bad, but in general he doesn't bother people. He has two past lives. (This is related to a treasure, but it's balanced) The first reaching peak qi refining and the second peak golden core. It's not a harem, but he does have lovers (One at a time usually), albeit It's nothing serious, and he makes sure they know that. He goes out of his way to not have any debts and to not have wives and kids as... more>> to avoid situations where he is chained down. He will run away to avoid danger. The main premise of the novel is that his cultivation method while slower gives him way more lifespan. So you will see time pass with friends lovers and enemies dying of old age as the MC keeps going. He is very opportunistic and bids his time. After all, he has way more time than the rest. His increased lifespan allows him to master way more arts (Alchemy, Forging etc) as time passes. Btw time and time again the MCs age is at best average when he gets to the next realm. Cultivation realms are respected a lot. Jumping a minor realm makes you an absolute genius. (Early nascent, fighting mid nascent). <<less

It's a decent slow-life cultivation novel. A bit more of plot conveniences/luck than ideal but not to the point of being forced. Do not expect too much adventure though, as the protagonist is extremely cautious and apathetic. 5/10 or by novelupdates rating standards between 3.7/5 and 4.5/5.

I guess writer finally wanted to do something different than his ongoing cliche cultivation formula and well he made it excellently!!

There are still some of writers signature trops like life changing mysterious item but you feel that writer pondered over how to improve and integrate those tropes into the story

For the characters I think this novel feels like really the cultivation world that described us everybody is an opportunist to a degree but it variable to person to person, there are some people that treacherous that can sell anything and... more>> everything for their sakes, there are some loyal people can above and below for their friends and families... etc.

Spoiler
    1. And novels MC which I like very much because he is so much different and well written compared to other cultivation MCs and even writers own other mcs. I don't want the spoil too much of the MC because he is one of the best part of the novel but I want to respond to people saying MC is too disconnected or didn't care. He cares and shows them in subtle ways but he doesn't want to have too strong of connections because of well established reasons in the novel like cultivating an evarlasting technique like his foundation establishment lifespan is greater than a fake dan's one and close to the true dan's one that gives him enough lifespan that he can technically outlive his friends grandson who is same level as him
    1. And this is characters third life which he aims to became a nascent soul cultivator which is extremely hard even for MC who is a past life golden core cultivator
      [collapse]
. And lastly cultivators with high cultivation really left impact corresponding to their cultivation not replaceable solders like golden core cultivator are really ablo to impact a regions fate or change in cultivation or number of nascent soul cultivators really impact fate of several kingdoms <<less

The MC is not exactly an amoral sociopath but he definetly puts himself above others. He has women but he's non commital towards them. This story has kind of a weird setup. It's his third life but he's utilizing a new cultivation technique so the previous experience doesn't really help, but at the same time his cultivation technique is basically a passive one that grows steadily with very little actual input on hispart so it doesnt matter. He rarely gets into conflicts with others and when he does, if its... more>> a non-physical fight he often gives way to others while planning for the long term. he isn't above holding a grudge but will also give way if propperly compensated. Any time theres 'real' danger the other side notices his spiritual sense is much stronger than it should be and psyches themselves out. This happens multiple times, draining a lot of the tension from the story.

I guess you could say it's.... realistic? It's not a bad story but it's not really an exciting one, nor is it a comedy. I struggle to describe it as a drama either. The tags claim theres romance but romance is not the genre. Chinese slice of life stories are just built different I guess. <<less

Nothing special but still a good read. It good read if you tired of new cultivation novels and if you just starting out in this type of novels. I read ahead using mtl, the quality of mtl is quite good for this specific novel.

It focused on slow cultivation, sometimes it go chapters without any action but fighting scene is quite good and simple compare to some of the other novels and believable as most of the main character luck and actions are believable in the plot and character's personality without... more>> that much plot armor. Other than depending on an few items, pets, and previous experience making him to be able to fight those slightly stronger (by a level or two most spamming items) than him, he doesn't have much of the modern power-scaling MC characteristic as he can't fight overpowered individuals by himself. It not very repetitive as it focus on main character as well as the world around that constantly changing just very slowly in terms of the novel and time that has pass for the main character. There great character building for some of the minor character however there not much of relationship between any of the characters. As you wouldn't grow attached to any of the characters including the main character. There not much overwhelming defining parts of the novel that stand out but the level stay consistent through the novel. I give it about an 3.7-3.8 overall. <<less

Unreasonably good.

It truly feels like he experienced reincarnation.

He easily forms friendships, but refuses to deepen relationships so as to be free to cultivate alone in this life, after one spent as a Patriarch/Ancestor.

I am really enjoying his "sitting by the river" approach and I like him even more when he sets things in motion so that his enemies might take the fall.

A smart guy. Strange in the Cultivation World.

This story is definitely not for everyone, especially not for those who crave a straightforward, action-packed, face-slapping cultivation novel. It unfolds at a slow and steady pace; our hero doesn't become overwhelmingly powerful overnight, yet he always manages to avoid a losing battle. When he encounters someone of a higher rank, he wisely retreats to plan his next move behind the scenes. Although there are several female companions, the narrative steers clear of the clichéd harem trope. He knows exactly what he wants, ending relationships without any cringe-worthy drama. It's... more>> a pity that only about 300 chapters have been translated so far, and while the story's calm rhythm is part of its charm, some readers might find the lack of dramatic twists a bit too tame over time. <<less

I'm currently on chapter 73. I'll try to keep this review spoiler free. Overall the novel is ok. It's definitely not a 4 or 5 star novel. Maybe a 3 star at best. Also I would ignore the other reviews that put down one star ratings. People give ratings for a reason and to demonize such a thing says your review is biased, emotionally driven, and therefore flawed. People like what they like.

The novel follows a MC who is on his third reincarnation, following his memories coming back to him.... more>> His character develops to become more steady, calm, and callous. His ambition to reach a higher level is mostly untainted and never forgotten. Now because of his ambition and the conditions surrounding it. The MC is portrayed as a aloof man who keeps himself away from worldly affairs out of the sake of being cautious and not dying early. So if you read this novel don't expect any great boisterous action, romance, or drama. It's a fairly neutral novel with some of those three things sprinkled here and there. But overall the author is going for a 'I'm the MC and somewhat involved but not really and I'm looking from the outside in'. So romance readers beware, , the romance tag is fairly false. It's kind of there but more sprinkled in for fillers sake. The MC is also fairly callous in his romantic endeavors. Overall the novel isn't a bad read, it's a smooth calm read about a man's great ambition to lay low and not be involved in worldly affairs and reach the highest level he can.

Also the novel point I'm reading at is still fairly early. The novel has indicated there is supposedly something big happening when he reaches nascent level in cultivation. I will probably edit my review if my feelings change about this novel as I read on. <<less
