My preferred taste is FLUFFY, but I also sport for the occasional angst & tearjerker novel. Modern stories are personally easier to digest. Historical or xianxia/cultivation stories are loaded with Chinese references & I can easily get lost. However, they can be very poetic & beautiful, which is why I bear the pain of treading carefully. Unlimited flow is a fun pastime at the cost of my brain cells.

Ghosts meet modern technology. Traditional exorcism overpowered by magical handcuffs? Reincarnation system advances into socialism?? The renowned Ghost King of Luofeng Mountain cursing people on weibo with a secret account???

This novel is bound to make you quake with laughter as well as smother you with fluff. I didn't think it was going to be this funny- I mean is there any humor in socialism? But the idea of having traditional values & beliefs broken by modern thought was rather satisfying & baffling to read about. There's a prominent theme of breaking older conventional standards & integrating older beliefs with more modern inclinations. It's interesting, fun, lighthearted. To read about Daoist monks using an air purifier to get rid of ghostly energy makes me cackle. Don't go in thinking you're going to get your fill in philosophy; it's simply not the novel for educational purposes. Enjoy it with an open mind & be prepared to laugh wholeheartedly.

OK let's address the main CP. This novel, if you haven't noticed from its reviews, is quite a slow-burn. Meaning, the main pair won't hook up until a good two-thirds of the story! If you're the type to crave passionate, instantaneous romance, this is not for you. The main CP are a match made in heaven (or hell?). MC is a genius programmer who needs to kill time before graduating & joining his friend's high-end laboratory. He signs a contract to temporarily work in ML's company, not realizing that it was solely run by ghosts until AFTER he seals the deal. As a result, he's stuck not only having to create programs to assist the development of the reincarnation system but to also cater to the needs of his tsundere boss! ML...ah, I adore him to death. Maybe it's because I have a soft spot for tsunderes... HOWEVER, putting aside my preferences, ML is truly wholesome & cute. How can you not love a ghost king who enjoys playing games & eating snacks? He's like a small tyrant who only knows how to act petty & spoiled... it's so endearing! Yes, the two take a while to get together, but the process is entertaining! You won't miss out because there is a lot of pampering, stolen glances, & fluffy interactions. THEY RAISE A GOOSE NAMED PEPPA FOR GOODNESS SAKE- IF THAT IS NOT LOVE THEN IDK WHAT IS

Yay, EO has finally made it onto this list after being held off for the past few months. I hesitated for so long just because I refused to use more than 10% of my brain power, but here we are- in love & incandescently happy with this survival thriller. A big shoutout to the TL, RainbowTurtle, because I would never EVER MTL this monster of a story.

Plot-wise if you've ever read Kamisama no Iutoori, a survival horror manga with similar themes, you'll know what you're getting yourself into. It's not the first time I've experienced a plot filled with death-matches & logic-eating instances. There's mystery, battles, & a whole lot mind-f*ckery bound to give you headaches. Didn't understand how the game worked? Welcome to the club! The puzzles in this novel affirmed my assumption: I would most likely die first in this novel, no question. However, MC & ML both have godly brains (I should start playing Bridge) & they work well together to conquer the tower. It's fun, full of thrills, & includes a cast of characters that are extremely memorable.

My favorite thing: the tower bosses. It's rare to notice the instance bosses if they're not associated with the ML, but even rarer for them to exhibit their own quirks & personality. It made the challenges far more entertaining, knowing that these instance bosses are familiar with the players, therefore creating a more playful atmosphere when interacting. Survival games tend to highlight humanity's weaknesses & ugly traits, which often leads to a lot of pondering on my end. I like that it fiddles with your moral compass; I haven't had thoughts in this direction since Little Mushroom.

BIGGEST GRIPE: Where is the spice??? I know firsthand what this author's capable of; I've read Rebirth of a Supermodel & it's on this list too. But the smut is severely lacking in this novel. Don't have high expectations for dog food. It exists but not the kind that would sate you. Two words: verifying ability. You'll thank me later when you get to that scene. As for main CP, I enjoy two equally big-brained characters. Although it's not my favorite personality pairing, I still think the power balance is hot. They trade blows as a form of greeting, exchange knowing glances, & have a magical goose egg that acts as personal walkie-talkies. What a shameless couple... This is most likely the only novel (at the moment) on this list that classifies as BL but focuses more on plot than romance. As a person who indulges in romance novels, it's not my usual type of read, but it scores high due to its captivating plot.

Before you start pelting me with stones, LET ME DEFEND MYSELF! You might be thinking, "wow Second.. your standards have fallen from the heavens & finally touched earth's mantle"- NO! Well maybe, but I'm still redeemable!!

After getting the final blow that his unrequited love of 10 years is getting married, MC tragically gets hit by a truck & dies. He then is a granted a chance to return to minutes before the accident as long as he completes tasks in various worlds. Partnered up with a pure-hearted, Buddhist sutra-reading system, MC's mission is to assist each world's "daughter of fate", but it's a bit difficult to do so when there's a very persistent ML trying to swallow him whole every time.

YES I KNOW IT'S A VERY GENERIC PREMISE. This would be my fifth time reading a novel with strikingly similar concepts & I'm telling you know that I didn't have expectations at all. The only thing factor that swayed me into actually reading is that apparently the second half of the novel is "good". So shoot me, I took the jump!

WARNING: there is a lot of noncon/dubcon, so always take this with a grain of salt & please do yourself a favor & be wary of the tags before diving in. I will admit that I am at the point where my brain is numb when I read stories like this, so god help me...

PROS: If anything, read it for the MC. I always like shameless characters, but I think this fool takes the crown. Just like in Strategy to Capture that Scum Gong, MC is forced to play a certain role whenever he transmigrates & he is not allowed to go out of character. This is where the tags of noncon/dubcon come into play, but it's also important to be aware that internally, MC is a MASSIVE PERVERT. Sometimes, I'm just kind of at awe to see how far his shamelessness goes & my heart goes out to the poor system who has to put up with him. Second reason, read it for the MC's relationship with the system- these two are like bickering best friends, a catty husband & wife, & their conversations are incredibly entertaining. I think it's one of my favorite system-host relationships so far!

CONS: yes there's plot inconsistencies, SHOOT ME! I could see the ending from a mile away but what I didn't expect is that ML's point of view which disabled me from being able to reread this novel ever again lmao... I mean this in the best way possible; the turn of events is actually really fun!

TL;DR the type of novel you'd read once for laughs & then put away for life. Try to read past the first 3 arcs & you might find something enjoyable!
