This novel is truly a slow burn, and I'm not exaggerating when I say it features one of the longest prologues I've ever encountered. Firstly, there's an impressively intricate worldbuilding that unfolds gradually with each chapter. Secondly, the cast of characters is exceptionally crafted; they're astute and deceitful, existing in shades of gray rather than simple black and white. Each character, whether ally or adversary to the protagonist, possesses their own motivations and complexities. Lastly, I admire the protagonist for his honesty and temperament; in many ways, we could all aspire to embody some of his qualities. ... more>>

I couldn't think of any novels that match the level of political management and plot development found in KB. However, I'd be happy to offer some suggestions that might pique your interest:

Marquis of grand xia: It was an enjoyable read, and I even delved into MTL to continue. However, I found the quality dipped from a solid 5 to a 3 in the middle part. Perhaps you will enjoy it more than I did.

Experimental Log of the Crazy log: It's a very good read, and it shares some semblance as both are very plot-focused with interesting characters.

Library of Rain (scribble hub): A recent hidden gem I read,  that I highly recommend. It shares a similar 'sad, tense' tone to KB.

Edit: Amber sword may be a good recommendation as well.

I highly recommend seized by the system. Modern super power/cultivation and otherworldly invasion. The system is pretty terrifying when you think about it, being locked inside your own body. It's in topnovel, mtl(?) with very few mistakes, try the first chapters, it could've been a oneshot comedy with that. Losing money to be a Tycoon is a good misunderstanding comedy, a bit repetitive in the middle, then gets better. 48 hours a day is awesome, Op protagonist earning his power, but skip the pirate arc, the chapters to skip are in reviews, would've been a 4.5 without it. Both in lightnovelworld. Also, earthlings are insane has nationalism done well, though can feel cringe. Edit: Regressors tale of cultivation not on this list?

Fyi, running from hero has a remake, a lot of new plot but the tl site is not that good.

I initally started I Will Eventually Become the Hero of Justice because I was feeling like reading fate again, without wanting to watch it all over again. I didn't expect to happen upon such a hidden gem.

The first arc with the 4th Holy War is a little underwhelming, but I assure you guys that it's absolutely necessary and that there is subtle foreshadowing that you would never expect of a fanfiction. This novel is very good.

Thanks for including it in your list. I would be open to other similar recommendations.

After stumbling upon such a gem, I've ventured into other Fate fanfics, but so far, nothing quite matches up. However, if the idea of an MC traversing different time periods and doing MC things intrigues you, I'd recommend you checking out "Time Emperor", (travelling anime worlds) a hidden gem. The catch is, this novel is by a Spanish writer on Webnovel, but you'll discover ways to read it in English in the comments section

I just added another novel to this list that shares some similarities. It's quite good, so you might want to give it a try too. It's named "Holy Right: A Multiverse Occultist"

Love how diverse this list is. Lots of entries on here that I would agree with as well. Also completely agree with your assessment of Demon Prince Goes to the Academy, the first half is some of the best SoL I've ever read, then the second half completely goes into the dumpster. The author is a repeat offender in that regard too, has done exactly the same with other stories, even wrote about it in meta commentary in the early chapters about how he kept destroying stories like that but then did it anyway. >.>

Was going to recommend Ending Maker/SSS-Class Su*cide Hunter but I saw you put them on a different list. While I can see why EM would be there due to rushed ending/repetitive structure, I'm surprised Su*cide Hunter isn't here, the author does such an amazing job combining different genres and the story and characters are incredible.

As far as other recommendations to check out, I've heard good things about A Transmigrator’s Privilege (haven't finished reading it though, so can't say much beyond that, but so far it's pretty good). And then over on the otome isekai side, Duke's Deathbound Daughter (https://www.novelupdates.com/series/shini-yasui-koshaku-reijo-to-shichi-nin-no-kikoshi/) (linked cause the name is in Japanese). It's a slow burn in the beginning (which is probably why the LN failed to get popular despite the great story, sadly) but has some of the best worldbuilding I've ever read in an isekai and the plot is very well constructed. I think the WN is complete, although not fully translated yet, but the translated chapters cover the majority of the story. MC's nickname is "Erica the Abyss Killer," if that piques your interest at all haha.

And then on the more tragic and serious side, I Reincarnated as a Noble Girl Villainess But Why Did It Turn Out This Way? Despite the name it's a much more grounded and serious series that covers topics such as war, politics, territory management, and is rife with pain and despair. Something on the opposite side of the spectrum if it interests you. Here, the MC's nickname is "Eliza the Impaler," another bait thrown out for your interest :P

Thanks for the recommendations. Regarding SSS-su*cide Hunter, I initially tackled the manga before delving into the novels. While it was great, unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to finish it. That's why I slotted it into another list containing novels that are either enjoyable or still pending completion for review.

By the way, I appreciate you including the nicknames of the MCclear.png

Great list! I have a couple recommendations

    https://www.novelupdates.com/series/the-outcast-writer-of-a-martial-arts-visual-novel/

Murim setting with a weak MC that mainly uses his wits to survive. Its not really about the martial arts as it is about the relationships he tries to build with the various heroines.

    https://www.novelupdates.com/series/sorcerers-handbook/

It has some of the best worldbuilding I've ever read. It really goes to some interesting places with magic/gods and how they can shape society. The story is pretty funny too with some quirky characters.

    https://www.novelupdates.com/series/once-upon-a-time-there-was-a-spirit-sword-mountain/

Pretty good deconstruction of the Xianxia while still being Xianxia.

Well, I would recommend these novels that are light-hearted and easy to read. If you're seeking action and a fast-paced plot, I suggest reading "The Novel's Extra". For a deeper immersion into world-building and fantasy, definitely give "Mushoku Tensei" a try. You might want to start with the anime adaptation and then move on to the novel if you're intrigued. Other options include "Kenkyo, Kenjitsu", which is my favorite Japanese rom-com/slice of life, and "Danmachi" (shounen/dungeon diving/friendship). clear.png
