Something I've noticed in certain types of comedy novels is that at one point in time, the novel HAS to turn into a grimmer and darker turn for various reasons such as keeping the freshness as well as taking away the limiter on the characters' development. Take it from The Experimental Log of the Crazy Lich for example, where although it still is funny even after hundreds of chapters, the characters feel more deeper and humane rather than just being straight out silly since the novel took effort in fleshing... more>> out the darker side of the novel. Or maybe to an extreme extent like Marquis of Grand Xia that has basically already removed the comedy aspect and pretty much turned into The Torture Log of the Crippled MC. While that may sound a horrible and wrong way for an originally funny novel to go, it has actually transformed the novel into a deeper and more meaningful piece of art where each of the later chapters cuts directly to the heart.

Now A Will Eternal, 250 chapters in, has not yet made this turn, and not any time soon as well it seems from what I can tell by the 400~ chapter reviews. It might've been all well in the beginning arcs, but ever since he's infiltrated into a sect where the disciples supposedly kill other people as breakfast, this type of lighthearted writing felt off and dissonant. It's weird because the writing feels like it's trying to show the more relevant and important characters in said evil sect as good people just because it would look bad on the MC to hang around with people who probably performs demonic rituals and human sacrifices every month or something. And if they don't do those type of things or any other deeds in the same caliber, then the whole evil sect fiasco would seem like just a big piece of farce that Er Gen decided on since he probably thought it would be cool to have the MC go to a sect that's the direct opposite of his original one.

I loved this novel for its comedy. I still remember dying in the middle of the night when I first read the north bank vs south bank arc, as well the following arc where he focused on alchemy. Now there's just so much the author is trying explain and add in the novel that there's barely any room left for comedy. In fact, some of the supposedly funny scenes sometimes get too much. There's this ongoing gag where other people gets misfortuned due to the MC's crazy antics like his bizarre alchemy side effects. And now there's this weird thing going where the people affected are actually affected in a way that would make the MC a big asshole, except the readers aren't supposed to be bothered about it since they're somewhat kinda the bad guys anyway? Like I said, it's weird. There's this one guy who acted as a major antagonist for an arc and now he just gets constant abuse from the MC and his clan.

Now of course comedy isn't the only aspect of this novel, although I might as well say that comedy is the only thing going for it. There's a weird harem that's very undeveloped where most of the members are mostly offscreen or sent away to return only much later on in the novel, probably. A not so strong and important girl MC meets and comes to like when he still wasn't strong yet happens to be a spy infiltrating the sect (for some reason...) with a very big background of a much stronger sect (daughter of the sect master or something, don't remember). To be honest the way it was revealed was like the author thought it would look bad if one of the harem members was a low teir sect member so he decided to suddenly add a big mysterious background to her, making it very unconvincing considering how this supposedly "I'm someone important's daughter since I have this strong and mysterious expert come pick me up just when the MC and I were about to hit it up" almost died in this supposedly unremarkable place to her, and quite miserably at that too. All the relevant females are either harem candidates or are too old to be considered. Too bad MC doesn't spend too much time with any of them, except for this one big sister type girl who he constantly thinks is seducing him.

The cultivation system is simple and easy enough to understand, except we never really get a grasp at how strong the MC is recently. We only know his limits when he fights enemies and beats them 'just barely.' He's got this heaven foundation thing going on for him, except it doesn't really give him much of an advantage despite spending an entire arc getting it. And it's ridiculous how he's not sweeping the floor with the others considering how much he leeches off of all the blood energy stuff in the sect he infiltrated that he happens to be so good absorbing (cause MC has a special cultivation method, amiright?). Although now that I say that, it did say something about hiding his identity and not being able to use most of his strength and skill, blah blah blah. Going to an enemy sect without informing anyone in his previous sect does sound really stupid doesn't it, although it all luckily went well for him since he can cultivate faster there with all the blood energy stuff (which he had no prior knowledge of). Yep, so many things are coincidentally going way too well for him, the author should've included something along the lines of that karma thing in ISSTH by now to easily explain all of this. Like fate must've guided him there and whatnot, I'd buy that.

I was originally planning on keeping this short, but once I started I couldn't stop myself. Before I make this too long, it's about time to give out my verdict.

Despite all that I said, this novel is still deserving to be one of the better-best novels on this site. It was unfortunate for me to have lost my interest in it after being drifted apart for so long. I just didn't like it as much as I did back when the previous translator was translating it. Don't get me wrong, the current one is by no means at all inferior to the previous one, in fact the previous one had quite a lot of issues. But maybe there's just something special about being the first version that I read back when it was still translating (I've read both), and having lost that special something, the novel never felt the same way and from then on it just wasn't as good as it was to me before. Recent chapters were kinda tedious to read and there's barely anything to look forward to at all in the novel. I got bored to hell by this trial by fire thing going on, I hardly care about the results or the people participating in it, in fact at this point you might as well say I hardly care about the MC anymore. He's always been rascal, but I wished he at least could've matured mentally.

Well who knows, you might still be able to enjoy the novel to beyond where I stopped at. Regardless of all that I've said, this novel is still definitely worth a try. It's a lot more decent than most of the novels here, just an unfortunate case on my part where I wasn't invested enough into the characters to overlook and ignore the flaws. This novel still deserves a 3 stars from me. <<less

I wonder how people rate this novel under 3 star. If this novel is bad then how the other novel would live.

It has good story, and you can see the character from it's title, to live forever.

Good humour, not too much blood but still there's awesome fighting scene.

Recommended for people who wants enjoy reading.

Chapter 15

Haha this novel is hilarious, the author is good at comedy and sent me flying from first chapter. The MC is cunning and shameless similar to ISSTH, and LLS but if more that would be he is natural troublemaker wherever he goes, not your ordinary cliche go to sect, become outer disciple, offend, bully, become inner disciple, offend, bully then core disciple sh*t. I always anticipated when he will start his mischief. It's that good.

"A Will Eternal" has been really good so far. Er Gen knows that people have high expectations from his new novel, and thankfully he doesn't disappoint his readers.

No repetitive plot. No decent of stupid villains. Er Gen uses smart and funny situations to progress the plot. Bai Xiaochun is a well written character who wins your heart with his shameless yet lovable personality. His adventures as "Chicken thief", "Plague Devil", "Little Turtle", or the Aphrodisiac pill episode, etc would make your day.

The starting is full of jokes and humor,... more>> and yet it's crucial to the story. Er Gen smartly wrote the personality of MC using humorous situations.

We get to know about the personality of Bai Xiaochun (meticulous and cautious) and the extent he is willing to go for survival. Everyone wants to live for an eternity yet the determination in Bai Xiaochun is far beyond others. His determination and his personality makes him different than the rest... The starting is focused on that and it's crucial to the story.

The thing I like the best about Er Gen is the abilities he create for his characters. We see many abilities in other xianxia and honestly most of them don't make sense even if they sound cool. But Er Gen is different. See "Lifting heavy as if Light" ability as an example in this novel. He explains the ability with "leaf" as an example (You can use leaf to carry heavy as well light weight depending on the way you use it). He just doesn't gives some heaven-defying name to the abilities... He creates them in such a way that it makes sense. The abilities of characters are really creative and cool.

The battle scenes are intense as well. The first life and death crisis Bai Xiaochun faced were full of well choreographed fight scenes. After reading the fight scenes you would say now that's a cultivator!

I don't even need to talk about the humor! The adventures of "Chicken thief" and "Little Turtle" would make your day :) The humor gets even better around Ch.89... there is a scene which would make you go crazy from laughter!! You should be wary of pills our MC creates!

The world building has been limited so far but I'm not worried as world building is Er Gen's forte. I'm sure the world building of this novel might even surpass his previous novels ^^

This series is definitely worth the time. Er Gen is at his creative best. <<less

Absolutely fun and fresh novel. All the hilarious moments you can think of in ISSTH have been condensed into one shameless, fatty (literally) MC. The MC has an inordinate amount of fear of danger but will do anything it takes to preserve and lengthen his lifespan granting him an inhuman level of willpower to do whatever he sets as a goal.

Expect: MC and friends getting fat, turtles, next level pettiness, and a magical stove.

I never expected it to be that good. It is the light-hearted and a bit more superficial counterpart to the dark and heavy Pursuit Of The Truth. It's easier to get into because the world building and background exposition here are much faster and less detailed.

MC is a greedy coward, envious of others. Much better than the vast majority of unrealistic idealist protagonists. Yet he has his own values and a bottomline and carries his own painful past and his own way of dealing with it. Which immediately blows up... more>> the expected frame of character depth.

Cultivation and conflicts are well written and the way MC reacts to things is gold. You'll laugh from the beginning and the humor is really good. But the humor is well balances with seriousness and emotion at appropriate times. The story is developing nicely and characters are diverse and have a depth to them!

Recommended! (But I have to say that I agree with people who hate the current translator, as his writing is just not enjoyable but generic and unnatural, feels like infused with too much with his own flair and interpretations and doesn't convey the emotions and expressions as intended by the author. I, like others, really enjoyed the old translations at xianxiaworld.) <<less

Er Gen writes far better stories than most wuxia authors, but he also has some big faults.

As usual in his stories (it seems), there figures a heck of a lot of animal rape, which I find off-putting, especially as it tends to repeat itself in certain patterns the author likes.

Otherwise, the MC is a very special kind of dense moron. He is an idiot-savant, so while he is able to advance his magic abilities like a savant, he is a total idiot when it comes to most social situations.

Unfortunately, making... more>> your MC retarded is one of the weaker ways to create tension and drama in a novel, so I'm not impressed by it, nor am I interested in watching him flail about and never learn any lessons from his obvious social mistakes.

The MC has a pathological fear of dying. He is a pathetic, incoherent, broken man who is not actively living his life, but rather just desperately running away in fear from death. This weak form of motivation for the MC is clearly not good, since it just pushes the MC to be defensive and to basically not build anything in the world.

What is the MC trying to build or create? NOTHING, except he is desperately seeking to live for ever - not because he wants to do something before he dies, but instead just because he vividly fears dying, no matter the circumstances. It is insane and annoying.

Knowing a bit how Er Gen likes to write, I can expect that the MC will never really grow out of this, unless 'growing' means devolving into a more psychotic murderer. The MC's motivation for murder and power will continue to be his silly fear of death, and his retarded misunderstandings with his environment will probably also never abate.

The MC's bonded pet animal is one of the WORST EVER:

After dozens of chapters detailing all the creepy work done by the MC to get his bonded animal to be born (with a particularly tear-jerking chapter where the poor little thing barely manages to be born alive), it was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT to see what came after.

The damned critter hates all men and is extremely creepy with all women - even though the thing isn't human and having s*x with women would be bestiality (*PUKE*), and even though it is not feasible to think of claiming ALL WOMEN, to the exclusion of all men on the planet. (ie: the damned thing is even more retarded than its master)

How annoying is it for something to hate all men just because they can hook up with women? Doesn't the author realize that his dumb critter is precisely the kind of animal ALL his male and female readers would hate to have around?

And of course, the retarded MC is the worst parent for this extremely s*xually deviant monster: he never tries to teach it better morals or ideas, instead just telling it to be deviant in a way that doesn't cause the MC problems...

I also have to laugh at the author's idea of self-improvement:

The only way to get better is to risk your life with a <25% chance of survival!

LOL. It is so dumb. How powerful would a clan become if, instead of constantly decimating their members, they instead trained them in ways that didn't cripple or kill the majority of them?

I think the elders are more interested in population reduction than in population advancement.

When the risks taken by the MC and his gang are considered foolhardy and ridiculous, then the story becomes just plain silly. <<less

So far even better than I shall seal the heavens. I did not think a wuxia novel could be this entertaining but it has surpassed my expectations. The main character is full of personality and someone who constantly schemes to create mischief for his benefit. Many complained that the beginning of ISSTH was rather dull, while I enjoyed the intelligence of ISSTH, there is intelligence in ATTE that differs from Meng Hao's.

Just read it, you will not regret it. The first few chapters are engaging and amusing. I really... more>> look forward to every chapter, and hope Er Gen can maintain the quality shown so far.

Edit: Similar to ISSTH, the creative start gives away to a generic template xianxia story. Instead of the main character having colorful interactions with side characters, we now read about the MC constantly being a genius in training and jumping power levels. Side characters are now decorations that exist to worship our MC. Story consists of training and "bloody" battles as cultivators scream and pant until the MC comes in and saves the day. I was utterly sick of that in ISSTH as that was every chapter for the last third of the story.

I already can predict how the rest of the story will play out, the MC will go to a different world where he is considered trash, masters the relevant crafting skill because genius, shames young masters, gets treasures, trains, saves cultivators participating in battles while screaming, panting, and sighing. Repeat this cycle about five times until the author gets bored of milking it.

Why go to the effort of making such an interesting start if your going to ruin it by turning it into generic xianxia trash? Ultimately I think its just because its easy, its easy to copy the generic template versus writing an interesting story.

MC is not your ordinary guy who always stands up for himself and is literally scared of dying and does anything for immortality. Shameless and scheming MC makes lots of mischief and acts as a righteous guy. ISSTH and this has a lot of similarities in terms of scheming though

Rated 5/5 as of now, because I know that Er Gen is not going to mess this up in the later chapters.

In the first few chapters you can easily see the resemblance to ISSTH. We have a very cunning character who does shameful things, just as in ISSTH, what makes for a very funny read so far. I can also sympathize with the side-characters. The cultivation seems to be the same as in ISSTH with Qi Condensation and Foundation Establishment. Another resemblance is, that he seems to find the first... more>> OP Item in the 2nd chapter.

I hope the story will go on in this way and hope the translators will keep doing as good as they are doing now. Good Job, translators! <<less

Long live Bai Xiaochun the greatest innocent trouble maker. *I didn't do nutin face*

What he sees in himself: good, innocent, a *looks weirdly* lofty cultivator. What other sees him: black heart, two faced, the greatest trouble maker.

The greatest comedy novel I've been reading. The male lead antics would leave a scar in your sense. Has a great storyline, plot is interesting and you have to watch out for some foreshadowing. Er Gen's a genius.

Friendly reminder: Refrain from reading this in public, lest they think you're a pervert. *looks dubiously... more>> around* haha... *whisper* (it's that bad) <<less

*Rolling on the floor laughing* hahaha Wahhh so good!!

(Well its actually to be expected. Its Er Gen's work for goodness sake!!)

If you knew "Meng Hao" then this story's MC was pretty much the embodiement of his shamelessness. The MC in the story looks innocent and naive outside when in reality actually a scoundrel and a Mischeavous Genius at heart. Which I remember this story has a lot similarity with the novel "world of cultivation" and its MC Zou Mo. Zou mo's greed is toward money while the MC... more>> of this novel greed for life, and they are both funny in a greedy way.

MC'S a quick witted bastard who value his life so much that he enters the world of immortal cultivation without prior knowledge about them just for the sake of extending his life. However just like each and every Mc's of er gen, he also have that unbreakable determination and perserverance (unfortunately theirs a catch. He must be pressured for it to appear :P)

Honestly I feel that Er Gen is currently making/trying something new, a story which follow a path different path from his previous work. (Issth, xian ni, bessech the devil and against heaven) I have a high expectation from this work, but no worries im sure Er Gen will not disappoint me.

Haha I feel that an ultimate conning expert will soon emerge at the Xianxia novel world!

its quite disturbing when I somehow cant see any romance nor harem at the genre.. Haha well its still early it will come.. I hope.. <<less

Incredible. I caught up to the translated chapters and the novel really starts taking off once he accepts his first real mission. That's all I will reveal, but the beginning really builds up the characters so stick with it! The first few chapters start out weak, and I was a bit disappointed, but eventually it all works out very well.

This isn't a novel where every character is 100% fleshed out and the story makes perfect sense, but in terms of Xianxia/Wuxia/Light Novels? It is the best I've seen when it... more>> comes to world building and character development. Maybe I'm just a frog in the well, but so far, Er Gen has shown himself to be at the pinnacle. No other author even comes close!

Only negative is having to wait for new releases after reading up to a huge climax.

I must add that Er Gen knows how to make escapes/pursuits interesting. I've never been on the edge of my seat reading any type of online novel like this. <<less

The MC is hilarious, hard working (especially in ensuring his own protection) and kinda a genius (he didn't even know it). This novel is pure gold!!!

If you like to read comedies, and shameless/trickster MC, then this you be your top 1 novel. You can feel the improvement in Er Gen writing. He is way more direct, lucid and you see that he kind of dominated his Dao of writing. This novel is really different from ISSTH, but in a good way.

- Is something I dislike in practically every Chinese novel. The way that old cultivators feel that they need to let the young ones do whatever they want because "cultivation... more>> is going against the heavens" or "every person has their path". This is kinda stupid, and you always end with a bunch of arrogant bastards without supervision. In this novel is NOT that accentuated, but theres always this hatred towards the MC simply because he is better than the other person. (He is shameless, so sometimes the hatred is well deserved hahaha)

- The MC needs a lot of indirect reasons to do stuff. He is really afraid of death, so for him to do something slightly dangerous, he needs like death threats. Until chapter 101 is treated as a joke, so its not that bad, but I hope is not overly used or will become tiring.

- This is funny as hell!!! Its really funny, I stopped reading to laugh a ton of times haha.
- The MC is a "genius" of effort. He doesn't have one advantage, only his crazy method of studying and his effort. And it works really well.
- The other characters have personalities. They are not too deep, but they are not bland. I hope more important, well developed characters, that can accompany the MC appears some time soon.
- Things take time. He doesn't become OP in a month, he takes some years and a lot of effort to become slightly OP.
_ There was only one time that the Luck card was used, outside the joke ones. Things dont fall off the sky, he just have some abilities that he trade for other things.
- There is no repetitions just to add more words. The writing is very refined.
- The translation is good and fast paced.

In the end, I really recommend this novel. Its a gem that I hope will grow beautifully.

Like the others I found the novel quite funny. The MC never believes what he does is good enough even while doing ground shaking results.

He's cunning and greedy and he'd do anything to live longer but he doesn't like to fight. I love how he wants to show off but is too afraid to do it.

I don't like people comparing him to LLS though, LLS' MC is a d*ck, an excuse of a human being but this one only stole a few chicken and find a cunning way... more>> to win money. He could at worse be called a scoundrel. He's not a pervert, he's not a sadist nor cruel. <<less

Yessssss! The new translations have finally caught up to the old ones. OMG I waited for so long.

This novel is definitely an underdog story where the MC manages to exceed and surpass all expectations to become one of the greatest cultivators between all sects. Though this theme is overused and overpromoted, reading it is always so satisfying! Especially when it's done in such a comical way. The main character's ability to create hijinks and disastrous unintended consequences is, dare I say, a gift. Yet he's always prevailed. I've encountered very... more>> few genuinely laugh-out-loud novels on NU (one I can recommend is My Disciple Died Yet Again), this one has made me roar with laughter over and over again.

The novel is pretty good. MC is a shameless and cunning individual. He's afraid of death (much like little Fatty Zhou from HJC) and wants to live forever by cultivating to become an Immortal. It's quite an hilarious and exciting read. Being Er Gen's work, it's pretty well written. Although not much character development has happened. But there is something. This is only the beginning after all. (Chapter 20 as of this review)

I have to say, that so far, this has been a wonderful read. The story has a good mix of action, comedy and drama, which is rarely seen in LN's. And as far as the MC goes, although he can be quite cowardly most of the times, I find him to be quite a character. In my opinion, he's character is really quite fleshed out and interestingly likeable. In the first 100 chapters of the story, I have found myself cracking up a bunch of times, as well as facepalming... more>> myself as well as how shameless he could be; but in contrast to that, I've also found myself teary-eyed at times, as well as applauding loudly at some of his actions.

So as of chapter 104. I have to give this a 5/5. Another classic from Er Gen. <<less

Fak yas. This shizzle some gud sh*t.

I didn't actually like ISSTH (dropped at around 200) or Renegade Immortal (dropped at around 400-500) but I like this. Its funny, but not repeated. It has serious moments when our MC actually shows off his powers, but he only does that when he gets angered. And baby Bai doesn't get angry much, much at all tbh.

It also shows off an OP MC, only we as the audience don't think hes that OP. This is due to a critical reason that I hope... more>> every author will one day follow: the fact that the supporting cast aren't there to drool over his d*ck when he shows of his power. They keep character, as a real life person would (hopefully).

Anyway read it, you will enjoy the first 100 chapters if nothing else. That is worth it when the rest of novels are generic sh*t which is somehow further worsened due to the continuous inconsistencies. <<less
