Chapter 15

Haha this novel is hilarious, the author is good at comedy and sent me flying from first chapter. The MC is cunning and shameless similar to ISSTH, and LLS but if more that would be he is natural troublemaker wherever he goes, not your ordinary cliche go to sect, become outer disciple, offend, bully, become inner disciple, offend, bully then core disciple shit. I always anticipated when he will start his mischief. It's that good.

"A Will Eternal" has been really good so far. Er Gen knows that people have high expectations from his new novel, and thankfully he doesn't disappoint his readers.

No repetitive plot. No decent of s*upid villains. Er Gen uses smart and funny situations to progress the plot. Bai Xiaochun is a well written character who wins your heart with his shameless yet lovable personality. His adventures as "Chicken thief", "Plague Devil", "Little Turtle", or the Aphrodisiac pill episode, etc would make your day.

The starting is full of jokes and humor,... more>> and yet it's crucial to the story. Er Gen smartly wrote the personality of MC using humorous situations.

We get to know about the personality of Bai Xiaochun (meticulous and cautious) and the extent he is willing to go for survival. Everyone wants to live for an eternity yet the determination in Bai Xiaochun is far beyond others. His determination and his personality makes him different than the rest... The starting is focused on that and it's crucial to the story.

The thing I like the best about Er Gen is the abilities he create for his characters. We see many abilities in other xianxia and honestly most of them don't make sense even if they sound cool. But Er Gen is different. See "Lifting heavy as if Light" ability as an example in this novel. He explains the ability with "leaf" as an example (You can use leaf to carry heavy as well light weight depending on the way you use it). He just doesn't gives some heaven-defying name to the abilities... He creates them in such a way that it makes sense. The abilities of characters are really creative and cool.

The battle scenes are intense as well. The first life and death crisis Bai Xiaochun faced were full of well choreographed fight scenes. After reading the fight scenes you would say now that's a cultivator!

I don't even need to talk about the humor! The adventures of "Chicken thief" and "Little Turtle" would make your day :) The humor gets even better around Ch.89... there is a scene which would make you go crazy from laughter!! You should be wary of pills our MC creates!

The world building has been limited so far but I'm not worried as world building is Er Gen's forte. I'm sure the world building of this novel might even surpass his previous novels ^^

This series is definitely worth the time. Er Gen is at his creative best. <<less

Er Gen writes far better stories than most wuxia authors, but he also has some big faults.

As usual in his stories (it seems), there figures a heck of a lot of animal r*pe, which I find off-putting, especially as it tends to repeat itself in certain patterns the author likes.

Otherwise, the MC is a very special kind of dense moron. He is an idiot-savant, so while he is able to advance his magic abilities like a savant, he is a total idiot when it comes to most social situations.

Unfortunately, making... more>> your MC ret*rded is one of the weaker ways to create tension and drama in a novel, so I'm not impressed by it, nor am I interested in watching him flail about and never learn any lessons from his obvious social mistakes.

The MC has a pathological fear of dying. He is a pathetic, incoherent, broken man who is not actively living his life, but rather just desperately running away in fear from death. This weak form of motivation for the MC is clearly not good, since it just pushes the MC to be defensive and to basically not build anything in the world.

What is the MC trying to build or create? NOTHING, except he is desperately seeking to live for ever - not because he wants to do something before he dies, but instead just because he vividly fears dying, no matter the circumstances. It is insane and annoying.

Knowing a bit how Er Gen likes to write, I can expect that the MC will never really grow out of this, unless 'growing' means devolving into a more psychotic mu*derer. The MC's motivation for mu*der and power will continue to be his silly fear of death, and his ret*rded misunderstandings with his environment will probably also never abate.

--
Update:
The MC's bonded pet animal is one of the WORST EVER:
Spoiler

After dozens of chapters detailing all the creepy work done by the MC to get his bonded animal to be born (with a particularly tear-jerking chapter where the poor little thing barely manages to be born alive), it was a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT to see what came after.

The damned critter hates all men and is extremely creepy with all women - even though the thing isn't human and having s*x with women would be bestiality (*PUKE*), and even though it is not feasible to think of claiming ALL WOMEN, to the exclusion of all men on the planet. (ie: the damned thing is even more ret*rded than its master)

How annoying is it for something to hate all men just because they can hook up with women? Doesn't the author realize that his dumb critter is precisely the kind of animal ALL his male and female readers would hate to have around?

And of course, the ret*rded MC is the worst parent for this extremely sexually deviant monster: he never tries to teach it better morals or ideas, instead just telling it to be deviant in a way that doesn't cause the MC problems...

[collapse]

I also have to laugh at the author's idea of self-improvement:
Spoiler

The only way to get better is to risk your life with a <25% chance of survival!

LOL. It is so dumb. How powerful would a clan become if, instead of constantly decimating their members, they instead trained them in ways that didn't cripple or kill the majority of them?

I think the elders are more interested in population reduction than in population advancement.

[collapse]

When the risks taken by the MC and his gang are considered foolhardy and ridiculous, then the story becomes just plain silly. <<less

Damn it! The second half of the novel is unlike previous ergen works and becomes generic and full of plotholes and filled with character inconsistencies. And then there is that damn ending. Damn ergen!what happened to you man?

Sure the first half is deserving of the +4.5 rating but the other half-no way.

issth had an average ending but it never reached the level of bad. AWE sure does.

So far even better than I shall seal the heavens. I did not think a wuxia novel could be this entertaining but it has surpassed my expectations. The main character is full of personality and someone who constantly schemes to create mischief for his benefit. Many complained that the beginning of ISSTH was rather dull, while I enjoyed the intelligence of ISSTH, there is intelligence in ATTE that differs from Meng Hao's. Just read it, you will not regret it. The first few chapters are engaging and amusing. I really... more>> look forward to every chapter, and hope Er Gen can maintain the quality shown so far.

Edit: Similar to ISSTH, the creative start gives away to a generic template xianxia story. Instead of the main character having colorful interactions with side characters, we now read about the MC constantly being a genius in training and jumping power levels. Side characters are now decorations that exist to worship our MC. Story consists of training and "bloody" battles as cultivators scream and pant until the MC comes in and saves the day. I was utterly sick of that in ISSTH as that was every chapter for the last third of the story.

I already can predict how the rest of the story will play out, the MC will go to a different world where he is considered tr*sh, masters the relevant crafting skill because genius, shames young masters, gets treasures, trains, saves cultivators participating in battles while screaming, panting, and sighing. Repeat this cycle about five times until the author gets bored of milking it.

Why go to the effort of making such an interesting start if your going to ruin it by turning it into generic xianxia tr*sh? Ultimately I think its just because its easy, its easy to copy the generic template versus writing an interesting story.

Absolutely fun and fresh novel. All the hilarious moments you can think of in ISSTH have been condensed into one shameless, fatty (literally) MC. The MC has an inordinate amount of fear of danger but will do anything it takes to preserve and lengthen his lifespan granting him an inhuman level of willpower to do whatever he sets as a goal. Expect: MC and friends getting fat, turtles, next level pettiness, and a magical stove.

Read over 80% of the story (and the axed ending) and sadly had to drop it. Didn't expect this from Er Gen.

It started off great at first, and I honestly thought it was the funniest cultivation novel out there. MCs naivety, narcissism and pill-making catastrophes were funny at first (the pill making always is). Yet even after 1050 chapters (80% of the novel) he didn't outgrow his naivety and that has cost him dearly on several occasions. Ask yourself this - would you like to read 1000 chapters about a... more>> 5 year old kid who never grows wiser and repeats the same mistake over and over and over again? Even bloody Chu Feng from MGA is less painful to read about. Apparently Er Gen also axed the hell out of the ending, if that means anything.

In short, if you ever read Harry Potter and went "I wish Harry stayed 11 years old throughout the series", this is absolutely the story for you. If not, don't even bother (apart from the beginning; it is still hilarious!). <<less

I never expected it to be that good. It is the light-hearted and a bit more superficial counterpart to the dark and heavy Pursuit Of The Truth. It's easier to get into because the world building and background exposition here are much faster and less detailed.

MC is a greedy coward, envious of others. Much better than the vast majority of unrealistic idealist protagonists. Yet he has his own values and a bottomline and carries his own painful past and his own way of dealing with it. Which immediately blows up... more>> the expected frame of character depth.

Cultivation and conflicts are well written and the way MC reacts to things is gold. You'll laugh from the beginning and the humor is really good. But the humor is well balances with seriousness and emotion at appropriate times. The story is developing nicely and characters are diverse and have a depth to them!

Recommended! (But I have to say that I agree with people who hate the current translator, as his writing is just not enjoyable but generic and unnatural, feels like infused with too much with his own flair and interpretations and doesn't convey the emotions and expressions as intended by the author. I, like others, really enjoyed the old translations at xianxiaworld.) <<less

Contains small bits of spoiler.

Debut is entertaining, some comedy well done, some not so well done, not much originality but still enjoyable overall.

Then it turns out to be another random CN LN, with some moronic comedy that becomes quickly repetitive (reminded me of why I cant read japanese LN anymore). ... more>>
Spoiler

I can hardly believe how poorly MC started on the upper sect, just sitting on his bu*t waiting to die, seriously, I nearly dropped it right there.

[collapse]

Crazy cultivation methods, inheritances, instantaneous power ups, "courage" over buff in dangerous situations, makes friends with hidden experts here and there accompanied with incredible gifts for the MC, beauties worth a kingdom falling for MC, pretentious young genius followed by continuous face slapping/unable to accept MC is stronger then revenge till death or slapping again, deus ex machina, predictable tropes etc... usual stuff. Not even well done, more like taking the recipe for a popular LN and throwing it all in without any more thought.

It looks like the author doesnt even like what he does anymore and is just doing his job. I dont know if I should put the translator in the lot, for all the redundancy. Same words from a sentence to another, very little use of synonyms overall and "it was none another than -input name-" as well as "it was virtually -input adjective-" every few chapters if not multiple times in the same, some clumsy double negation to express... negation or using two synonyms in a row while one word was enough. I am not listing them all here, just things I can remember right now. Once in a while is ok, but in the long run I couldnt take it anymore. The translator could really use a proofreader, even a machine one would help a lot.

I have read Xian Ni and ISSTH and would give them both 4 stars for different reasons, but starting from this and now reading AWE, I am simply too disappointed both in the writing (translation ?) and the story itself, I'm leaving a comment here because I'm dropping the novel at this point after trying too hard to like it (ch 414, another genius that cant believe MC has incredible backing even when 10 000 people come to save MC's ass, "must be a coincidence").

You may give it a try and like it if you are less demanding than me or if you think you can enjoy whatever those 2 stars have to offer, but unless you are immensely bored, I wouldnt recommend reading past the second book. Very forgettable novel. <<less

MC is not your ordinary guy who always stands up for himself and is literally scared of dying and does anything for immortality. Shameless and scheming MC makes lots of mischief and acts as a righteous guy. ISSTH and this has a lot of similarities in terms of scheming though

Rated 5/5 as of now, because I know that Er Gen is not going to mess this up in the later chapters.

In the first few chapters you can easily see the resemblance to ISSTH. We have a very cunning character who does shameful things, just as in ISSTH, what makes for a very funny read so far. I can also sympathize with the side-characters. The cultivation seems to be the same as in ISSTH with Qi Condensation and Foundation Establishment. Another resemblance is, that he seems to find the first... more>> OP Item in the 2nd chapter.

I hope the story will go on in this way and hope the translators will keep doing as good as they are doing now. Good Job, translators! <<less

Full of plot holes, weak character development, overused jokes, weak in every aspect with few good things on it. Not even close to his other works, and this one is cringe almost like some very bad japanese wish fulfillment stories. Can't imagine why this story is rating at 4.5, it would be already over praised if it was at 3 stars.

Started out great, but got repetitive and annoying as it went on.

The MC gets more annoying and childlike further into the story. We see No improvement in his personality throughout the story whatsoever. Personally I liked issth a lot better.

If you like a story in which the MC grows and matures as he gets stronger, this story is not for you.

If you like a story with fun and laughs throughout, albeit repetitive, which you won't be able to take seriously at all, then go for it!

Long live Bai Xiaochun the greatest innocent trouble maker. *I didn't do nutin face*

What he sees in himself: good, innocent, a *looks weirdly* lofty cultivator. What other sees him: black heart, two faced, the greatest trouble maker.

The greatest comedy novel I've been reading. The male lead antics would leave a scar in your sense. Has a great storyline, plot is interesting and you have to watch out for some foreshadowing. Er Gen's a genius.

Friendly reminder: Refrain from reading this in public, lest they think you're a pe*vert. *looks dubiously... more>> around* haha... *whisper* (it's that bad) <<less

Incredible. I caught up to the translated chapters and the novel really starts taking off once he accepts his first real mission. That's all I will reveal, but the beginning really builds up the characters so stick with it! The first few chapters start out weak, and I was a bit disappointed, but eventually it all works out very well.

This isn't a novel where every character is 100% fleshed out and the story makes perfect sense, but in terms of Xianxia/Wuxia/Light Novels? It is the best I've seen when it... more>> comes to world building and character development. Maybe I'm just a frog in the well, but so far, Er Gen has shown himself to be at the pinnacle. No other author even comes close! Only negative is having to wait for new releases after reading up to a huge climax. I must add that Er Gen knows how to make escapes/pursuits interesting. I've never been on the edge of my seat reading any type of online novel like this. <<less

Pretty decent and funny.

So funny that its overwhelming with excessive positivity. WHICH for me became a huuuuge huuuuge drawback. Don't get me wrong, I do love this novel. However er gen just took the comedy too over the top. That the novel became a super comedy that you as a reader can't simply take seriously. It became so funny that almost no tension could be felt and that majority of the serious situation are being overlooked. TBH. After writing this ive kinda realize that the solemn super serious... more>> moments in the 1000+ chapters of AWE could simply be count with one (or two) hand I'm serious. Sure the overall is great (The setting, plot, world building and characrers) but you just can't ovelook the fact that its hard to take it serious. If beseech is Grim, Renegade is dark, Issth is fun and serious then Awe is COMEDY (a joke) when compared to its predecessors. Xiaochun has his own feats and he could possibly be the legendary immortal (didn't comprehend the novel enough to give assurance) But if his feats were ever compared to Su Ming, Wang Lin and Meng Hao's feats then its like comparing a martial artist to a grandmaster if you know what I mean. With all that said And if ever Er Gen manage to read this, then I wanna f*ckin say this.. "The Ending is terrible and annoying. That ive read the whole novel to reach a CONCLUSION not to be kept hangin and guessing what happen!!" and to all the reader who've read this review then please do read it and support it cause its good (though a bit lacking and bad compared to the previous works)

[July 01, 2016]

*Rolling on the floor laughing* hahaha Wahhh so good!!

(Well its actually to be expected. Its Er Gen's work for goodness sake!!)

If you knew "Meng Hao" then this story's MC was pretty much the embodiement of his shamelessness. The MC in the story looks innocent and naive outside when in reality actually a scoundrel and a Mischeavous Genius at heart. Which I remember this story has a lot similarity with the novel "world of cultivation" and its MC Zou Mo. Zou mo's greed is toward money while the MC of this novel greed for life, and they are both funny in a greedy way.

MC'S a quick witted bastard who value his life so much that he enters the world of immortal cultivation without prior knowledge about them just for the sake of extending his life. However just like each and every Mc's of er gen, he also have that unbreakable determination and perserverance (unfortunately theirs a catch. He must be pressured for it to appear :P)

Honestly I feel that Er Gen is currently making/trying something new, a story which follow a path different path from his previous work. (Issth, xian ni, bessech the devil and against heaven) I have a high expectation from this work, but no worries im sure Er Gen will not disappoint me. Haha I feel that an ultimate conning expert will soon emerge at the Xianxia novel world! P.S
its quite disturbing when I somehow cant see any romance nor harem at the genre.. Haha well its still early it will come.. I hope.. <<less

This novel is pure gold!!!

If you like to read comedies, and shameless/trickster MC, then this you be your top 1 novel. You can feel the improvement in Er Gen writing. He is way more direct, lucid and you see that he kind of dominated his Dao of writing. This novel is really different from ISSTH, but in a good way.

Cons:
- Is something I dislike in practically every Chinese novel. The way that old cultivators feel that they need to let the young ones do whatever they want because "cultivation... more>> is going against the heavens" or "every person has their path". This is kinda s*upid, and you always end with a bunch of arrogant bastards without supervision. In this novel is NOT that accentuated, but theres always this hatred towards the MC simply because he is better than the other person. (He is shameless, so sometimes the hatred is well deserved hahaha)

- The MC needs a lot of indirect reasons to do stuff. He is really afraid of death, so for him to do something slightly dangerous, he needs like death threats. Until chapter 101 is treated as a joke, so its not that bad, but I hope is not overly used or will become tiring.

Pros:
- This is funny as hell!!! Its really funny, I stopped reading to laugh a ton of times haha.
- The MC is a "genius" of effort. He doesn't have one advantage, only his crazy method of studying and his effort. And it works really well.
- The other characters have personalities. They are not too deep, but they are not bland. I hope more important, well developed characters, that can accompany the MC appears some time soon.
- Things take time. He doesn't become OP in a month, he takes some years and a lot of effort to become slightly OP.
_ There was only one time that the Luck card was used, outside the joke ones. Things dont fall off the sky, he just have some abilities that he trade for other things.
- There is no repetitions just to add more words. The writing is very refined.
- The translation is good and fast paced.

In the end, I really recommend this novel. Its a gem that I hope will grow beautifully.

Very interesting novel that has its own charm compare to other cultivation novels. The MC is hilarious, hard working (especially in ensuring his own protection) and kinda a genius (he didn't even know it).
