 Maybe it's because the FL is so old and experienced and has no challenges or quests, I do not know, but it lacks the fresness of youth and adventure, the spirit of novelty and discovery. Instead, it feels like description of very down to earth Chinese city dwellers life, their slice of very mundane life.

The good thing is that the ML, the unlucky Jiang Wei, and her in-laws appear early on in this novel, in ch 6. She helps him and his family to recover their stolen luck,  whereas he tutors her on the high school subjects of our modern  world. <<less

The story itself is written in a way that I don't even have a name for such a style of storytelling. Very unusual, "por man brioche" style. Its attractiveness is not in its great writing, nope it is not great, or great plot, or even great characters, or cliches. May be it is attractive, because the FL is so badass, I do not know, but I want to keep reading it.

 Many Chinese writers fantasize about autism cure in one way or another. This boy is not autistic in the sense we understand it in the West. His brain is normal. He is healthy, but slow and extremely socially withdrawn. He needs more attention and social engagement, not less like his parents did by leaving him alone to his own devices. 

The system raises the boy to be socially engaged, physically healthy, academically successful. What looks like punishment to us, brain zapping,  is actually the electrical stimulation of the brain akin to the pain of physiotherapy or massage to restore muscles to function.

About the MC's age and the age gap. Well, in China, everything has to do with the era. In some historical periods, even in the 1960s-1970s in villages, marriages at the age of 15-16 were the norm. Both boys and girls. In historical novels, 14 years old was the norm. Then, starting from 1980s the official age of marriage was raised several times, marriages at the age of 25-30 were encouraged to be the norm. So I do not see anything wrong with depiction of the adult ML loving a 16 years old youth. The age gap between two men where one could be a father and another a son (by age) is nothing for this writer, she wrote about it so many times in QWTFOTD that it is practically a norm for her, so she desensitized me.
