first sentence, its really live up to its title. Its work ethic novel than a romance novel for me.

i got hook for how MC beat up that cheater. But more n more I felt this novel is so tiring to read.

  • the writing style just not my style. how the author describe every action, every node on every plot really got me no imaginary when reading it. Its to over detail n over describe that its annoying n tiring to read for me.
  • they focus more on the job description than MC life problem. (Well MC was said as a workaholic) but how almost every problem outside the job was just brush away is a bit to much for me as a reader. Felt like asking "why dont you just make it biografi aspiration than a romance novel?"
okay, the plot n character in this novel is close to life (i mean close to our reality in life) maybe if its not over describe it would be more bearable 🤔

the only entertainment when read this novel is ML and their assistance character. It give more life to it with a little description than MC everything n his job

ON FIRE! Wow, this stirs emotions. Tbh I have no idea what some ppl in reviews are dissatisfied about, I'd understand if the story was bad or characters would be overbearing, so the nitpicking on things that don't really matter in the overall picture is beyond me kek :)

For a novel with a bit over a 100 chapters I couldn't stop reading it before I finished on how upbeat it was. It's really easy to MTL and really easy to understand, well at least it was like that for... more>> me. The story dynamic is pretty nice, from impactful events to soft romance. Pretty immersive, descriptive and distinct. The range of characters is wide, they don't get lost on the surface of each other. For me it was really easy to be involved.

For starters this novel doesn't have the flatness of many stories of retribution. And for a novelty you can really say with confidence that this is a book of true REBIRTH. Luo Ding, as MC, doesn't concentrate his new life just to get to the old foes, even his old name pretty soon is tossed. He doesn't dig pits for other characters. Even being betrayed he doesn't blacken to stepping on the same low level, though there's enough feeling of hatred in his heart. He realizes that he has a second chance, he follows the same path as before of working hard. His long career helps him to stand out, his looks are outstanding, sure thing it's a road to success novel. But the whole feeling of OP-nees is toned down by his inner uncertainty, he's unbelieving when it comes to his own success, he is always grateful for what he has, repays ppl for good things, his character is really appealing. It's also easy to understand why it's quite a slow burn, he was betrayed by a partner of many years, stabbed by his protege in the back, when ML came around with his feelings it was hard for him to accept and jump in. They were not on the road of affection right away. ML also has a really good character, love didn't come crashing him down, at first he just appreciated that MC does not pretend in front of him. As a person who achieved success surely he've seen hypocricy, his family situation also added some fuel. So slowly, but surely they start to come together. He never was forceful or oppressive, he's really loving and respectful, which is wonderful. And I mind you, MC uses his own skills, surely there's an element of luck and care (but this is a novel what the heck), no one is oppressing those who wronged him with the help of golden thigh. After a while even that feeling of hatred subsidises and MC realizes that what he has now is more meaningful to him than anything else and his perspective shifted, as well as their falling in love. Although he still worries, but he's honest. Tbh I really enjoy their antics. Thus the whole foes being included during entire novel comes natural. Tbh I really liked this part, because the retribution came in different forms. Transformation of his ex was pretty nose dive and abrubt, it was different for the "protege" though. Since he's the main villain as you may call it, but his transformation comes slower, from absolute confidence in his rightness to being pressed by the truth that without MC's past he wouldn't get where he is, without protection he is nothing special, just a boy with ambition and hypocricy, but no real foundation. And the further it goes the easier it is to distinguish his ugly character for others.

I came to this novel after being impressed by "Epiphanies of rebirth" (same author) and I'm really glad I did, it was worth the ride and I think those who liked the other work should def try this too.

P.S.: Oh yes, and at the comparison with "Rebirth of a supermodel" I had to PUKE. DON'T compare this to that piece of boring garbage. Just ewe. <<less

This is actually fairly interesting, because the novel starts off like one of those novels where the betrayed MC is reborn and enacts revenge on those who wronged him.

However, over the course of the novel, MC becomes less inclined for active vengeance and focuses on the ultimate revenge -- living well. Without his intervention, the scum ex-husband and his paramour tear each other apart. And although they get face their own retribution, a certain ugly truth is revealed. That is, that people are not just good or just bad. The... more>> villains face regret, guilt, longing, and a myriad of emotions before their demise, and at some point, the reader comes to sympathize with them. Nevertheless, they face the consequences of their actions, and the result isn't pretty.

On the other hand, MC rather quickly learns to forego his feelings towards the two who killed him, and focuses on living his best life. At first, MC is hesitant to entangle with ML as he is recently out of a decades-long relationship that ended in disaster. However, ML slowly wins him over, first as a friend, and then as a lover. They aren't a perfect couple as MC is a workaholic and ML becomes easily jealous, but they understand their shortcomings and have mutual trust and respect for each other.

I really appreciate the way that this novel was pretty progressive in its views regarding other countries as well as their habits. The characters come into people of all different races and nationalities, yet there is no xenophobia or racism to be found. One of the characters who won an award was even a black man, which is something quite rare to find in a Chinese (or any Asian) piece. The only thing I would have hoped for was for MC to reveal his past to ML. Alas, it seems it never happened. Oh well, still a great read nonetheless. <<less

For me, the most memorable thing from this book is the fact that the MC legit SMASHED his cheating ex and white lotus 'good brother' with a basketball bat. It's so badass and eye opening since I rarely read MC that handles cheating with such a direct method.

I loveee to see a self-respectful MC. He doesn't forgive their wrong deeds (unlike other dogblood story MC who keeps forgiving the scum over and over again) nor does he blinded by hatred and revenge. But don't worry, those scums will still end... more>> up miserable even without MC.

The story is true to its title. Its not about face slapping, Its about how the MC once again relive the journey to reach the top of entertainment circle. So if you want a satisfying face slapping story, this book ain't it. All the drama relatively mild and the MC path is quite smooth.

Another thing that I like about this story is how the scum actually feels guilty and regretful immediately after the 'good brother' killed MC. Which is more realistic, because in the end he is human too, unlike some other villains in Chinese novel who doesn't feel a slightest guilt (these type of people are psychopaths) like the 'good brother'.

Most second chance novels are a case of 'what ifs'. Like in this story is about; what if Cao Dingkun got transmigrated/reborn in another person's body?

But lemme reverse that, what if Cao Dingkun doesn't get a second chance? Will the scums still get their retribution? The answer of this book is yes. That's why although this book are not without flaws, I still like it. Because here, KARMA EXISTS. They don't mu*der a person and leave unscathed like other stories. The death of Cao Dingkun has a great impact on both of the scums' lives.

Spoiler

the scum ex-bf lost the mobility of his lower body, his reputation, his appearance, his sanity, and his passion for filming. Everything that he used to care about is gone, he doesn't have a future anymore.

Meanwhile the white lotus 'good brother' lost his place in entertainment cycle, and in the end he got stabbed by robbers (??) And after that I forgot, cuz by the end of the story they are merely canon fodders, not important in MC life

[collapse]

The middle part of the book is pretty boring, cuz the MC successful in everything he does. The relationship with the ML is also a gradual proccess. There's nothing special with the ML imo.

All in all, its not an amazing read. But its good enough to keep you reading till the end. <<less

I read this over a year ago and I rated this a 3.5 in my notes but I think it's better to round up rather than down in this case.

pros:

it actually deals a bit more with the entertainment field and the MCs' job, rather than focusing just on the relationship; a plus for me because that showbiz tag is the entire reason I started to read it in the first place.

No idiot MC, though his EQ is just about zero when it comes to the ML (like most of these... more>> stories).

no instant love. ML is initially interested in the MC because he's the only one he's met who treats him like a normal person and not a star but there is no love at first sight.

flawed characters. MC and ML interesting because of it.
Spoiler

this MC has serious trust issues after what happened the first time and it affects how they grow as a couple. There's no "I'm reborn after a betrayal but am somehow still nieve, trusting and innocent" characters here.

[collapse]

and last but not least
Spoiler

No awards ceremony confession; a tired trope often used in the BL entertainment genre to end a story, usually followed by a huge wedding. I don't understand the burning need everyone has to come out and declare their ownership of their partner on international tv (usually done at the Oscars or Golden Globe). Do other people really find that romantic?

[collapse]

cons:

the author has no idea what they are talking about when it comes to the American entertainment circle and the mandatory protections in place for actors and it shows. A lot.

the revenge was too drawn out,
Spoiler

by the time they got back around to the movie I'd long since stopped caring one way or the other. The momentum just petered out and went nowhere.

[collapse]

too much family drama diluting the story and taking up space that could have been used to flesh out the revenge scenario and tighten up the plot.

and this is just a personal preference but
Spoiler

It bugs me that he never tells anyone, especially the ML, about his rebirth, shouldering everything himself rather than sharing the burden

Man, the plot really got me hooked. I was living for the MC's rage and his violent reactions HAHA. Unfortunately after that it just becomes repetitive for me where it's people underestimating the MC and then getting mystified when he lifts his finger. It gets boringg. Also ML is kinda bland? I expected it to be more slow in terms of romance.. maybe I'll continue reading just to see how the revenge gets served but other than that it's meh.

EDIT 22/11/21: I re-read up to the latest chapter and... more>> I still feel the same way. I guess you can argue that he earned his skills through his first life but man he skipped so much steps in the industry it's insane. ML also went a whole 180 from mysterious/distant to a closeted BF fan of the MC lol. I wanted some battle of wits between the two, or just vibes sinilar to when they danced the rumba at the party - neither wanting to back down from being the dominant. I'm kind of iffy with how the author would then go to describe how the MC is so skinny, pale to the point I'm getting the image he's more effeminate then? When ever will I read a novel when the bottom doesn't get described as close to a female...

Also, for someone that loves reading revenge being served - this ain't it chief. I thought the MC would come to life with vengeance but he really just lets the story play out. Sometimes I wonder what the author is thinking in terms of plot, what does the MC want to do? What is his end goal? I'm losing the reason as to why he keeps striving for success (overworking to the point he vomits and passes out). At first, I thought it was revenge, but he's not even actively involved with his enemies, no plans are being made, he's hardly keeping tabs on them. Kinda confused? <<less

  • Warning! There is a part where there is drug use, albeit MC & ML didn't consent to it and the situation got resolved fairly quickly. And of course, it was the foreigners who tricked them into taking it, am I right? /sarcasm
  • Another warning: s/e/x/ual harassment in the workplace.
    Spoiler

While they were filming, no less. To his credit, ML did immediately apologize afterward, but then he kept on insisting on his apology at that moment until MC was finally forced to accept it. And instead of giving MC space that MC had clearly wanted, he kept on clinging onto MC and putting them in awkward situations in public.
I just don't understand why ML is in such a hurry to be in a relationship with MC, I guess. He went from okay to too much for my taste.

    [collapse]
  • Originally, I agree with the other reviewer in that the plot is similar to Rebirth of a Supermodel. However, this novel's MC is much more reckless with his own body and careless enough to let himself get into troubling situations.
  • Also, while I am interested in the plot of this novel, I find the constant descriptions of how beautiful MC is so tiring. Every time he meets someone or takes on some work such as acting/singing, there will be paragraphs dedicated to describing every little detail of what's so hot and amazing about MC. Like, we get it, he's hot. Stop beating a dead horse... There's so much fawning over MC every scene that it kind of makes him less likable, if that makes sense. Over and over, there will be lots of quotes from fans which are basically just screaming repeatedly (Ah Ah Ah x10) or in an elongated manner (Ahhhh) plus comments on wanting to lick MC...

I don't mind that he's a Gary Stu, but the author sort of tries too hard convincing us of how good his looks and abilities are that they overexplain it.

Hm... I'm quite liking this story, but sometimes the author slips some nationalistic bias/xenophobia towards other Asian countries in the text that really catches me unprepared. It's not the first time I see such things but it's still baffling and uncomfortable...

MC is a little Mary Sue halo, but in consideration of the fact that he genuinely earned it it's forgivable? This is truly not a faceslapping novel, but more a young actor succeeding in the circle with the OP skills he trained in his past life. However, I love the occasional faceslapping & scheming moments! Su ShengBai redefines scum black lotus.

Usual reincarnation/transmigration story in showbiz, MC is too OP, the 'body' he was reborn into was the best possible one, and now MC is blowing everyone with not just his acting skills, but also his singing! ML, as usual, is another OP character who is cool to others but sweet to MC... Though it doesn't make much sense, their interactions are very sweet and you want to root for them :)

MC knows he's weak at present and is slowly shoring up his energy to be able to take revenge... more>> on those responsible for his death. His path to stardom is kinda smooth, meeting friendly (atleast to him) characters, and very few brain-dead small fry antagonists... Looking forward to how he avenges his death! <<less

You guys had no idea how many times I've re-read this novel over and over again!! Mind you, I'm picky about the novels I read so re-reading this 5 times, says something.

Currently, I'm on my way to re-read this again (6th), and I realized that I haven't written a review yet, so here I am!

I'm kinda lazy so although I've been using NU for a long time, I've only made an account to yesterday. Yes, I'm that lazy.

I won't spoil anyone about anything since I assure you that reading this... more>> novel head-on, without any idea of what will happen next, would be one one the best decision of your life (maybe that's an exaggeration, but you get it.)

First of all, the plot, or the concept of the novel itself, isn't entirely unique but it's different, unlike any entertainment industry novels you've read before. I have quite the knack for OP mcs, and the way MC is over powered is not annoying as opposed to most OP MCs, since his own talents were cultivated over time with his own hard work and determination.

I mean, wouldn't you want to want to use the skills you've worked hard on polishing before once again? Wouldn't it feel great to experience the thrill of rising to the top once again, especially if you've already been to that place, but now you're back to square one?

Again, this is a matter of personal taste. This novel isn't perfect but I doubt that someone would hate this masterpiece. So, if you're still hesitating, go ahead and give it a try! <<less

MC has a quite strong mary sue halo. The villains’ end path is a bit unusual from the other novels, overall it was a very enjoyable read. I love the MC and the side characters (true friends he met along the way, esp gu yaxing, yuan, pan) ?

I really like the MC personality here!!
1. He's humble and not ingrate (he knew that he was 40y/o so when he was praised he thought that if he was NG-ed how much of a loser he was).
2. He takes everything to himself and never asks for help (Since he turned down the ML indirectly, when he said "I'm a man", so he never really used ML for personal gain though he could via the ML's popularity.

For ML, I like how he isn't forceful of his feeling. However, I'm really disappointed around c80. When he got together with MC, he became too controlling, similar to the usual BL trope. Didn't he see how capable the MC?

For the story, it's good. Though not the best among entertainment/showbiz nor rebirth novel, it has its own spark. Since, this story shows that "there is no medicine for regret and Feng shui turns". Without the intervention of MC, the villains get their own retribution, though might not as heavy if the MC wasn't transmigrated. MC lead Xu Zhen (his exbf) to increase Xu zhen's distrust to shengbai (MC's killer).

It is boring.

Except for the opening scene, which is a pleasant surprise, the rest are just typical road to stardom story, where the main character's career is smooth sailing all the way to the top. The ML is the first to fall in love and very eager to capture the MC. Besides, despite being in the entertainment industry, where beautiful people are everywhere, everyone is soooooooo captivated by MC's beauty and excellent acting and singing skills. Lol Meanwhile, the original owner of this face and vocal cords is basically transparent... more>> in the industry with zero exposure opportunity. Well, well. <<less

Main couple is amusing. MC's rise is meteoric but he himself says since he was reborn, if he can't make proper use of this "golden finger" isn't he himself tr*sh? The author has a good descriptive ability which can unfortunately become overbearing when they go on a nationalistic bent. It's a wonderful story and I enjoyed it very much. In terms of story building it's very similar to rebirth of a supermodel i.e. Focusing on work and aiming towards the top.

The MC and ML are very cute and their relationship is very mature (not in terms of papapa)

My only gripe is that it focuses too much on the the job rather than the relationship. The feeling of having a long distance relationship really displayed itself well to the point where I skimmed through a few chapters.

The side characters... more>> arent focused on too much and the antagonistic charactets get their karma.

By the author of Epiphanies of Rebirth. Such an amazing writer! I really, like REALLY dislike C-novels about Chinese entertainment industry, very few are well written, but this one is actually a story well told.

Spoiler

It's about a married actor catching his husband of 27 years together in the act with another, much younger man and beating his wayward husband with the baseball bat. He broke his teeth, bones, internal organs and smashed his pen*s. This is worse that the ancient Chinese punishment of beating a person's ass with a board! After that he ordered him to meet him a week later in the Netherlands in order to divorce! Obviously, their marriage is not recognized in China, so the guilty party would get nothing afterwards.

For some reason, most reviewers and all commenters love that scene of brutal spousal violence. Like it's their dream come true. Do readers really think that consensual s*x between adults outside marriage deserves such response, no matter who did it, a wife or a husband? We all wish to kill the bastard, but how many of us would act on that feeling? One loving spouse actually beat another spouse into a pulp with a baseball bat? A husband being another husband's judge, jury, and executioner? After thirty years of impeccable love and mutual devotion?

Next, that young lover mu*dered the actor and his soul transmigrated into another actor's body. So, he continues his career as an actor and finds himself another husband. His new husband does not know, of course, about his beau's violent streak. The actor never tells him about who he really is, his true age (50, not 20), or what he did to his first husband.

He never actually seeks revenge on the cheating husband or the mu*derer, well... besides beating his husband so agressively that he will never be able to have s*x or function normally in his life ever again, which is surprizing for a character in a Chinese novel. Usually it is a revenge driven life afterwards.

Nor does he ever feel that he did something wrong when he used that baseball bat on a couple in the middle of their pleasant encounter. Instead, the two men who sneaked away to have s*x while he was working just desintegrate, each on his own gets his life ruined in one way or another. The cheating husband truly grieves the loss of his beloved and regrets, but not enough to expose the mu*derer and his own homosexuality to the public.

Maybe the ML was guilty of investing too much in other people, one was a movie director he invested 30 years of care and hundreds of millions in, another - a young fresh meat he invested in as his younger brother, a protege. He invested so much that he felt that they were his property, that he bought their loyalty? So after his death neither the old movie director (the widowed cheating husband), nor the young actor (the director's lover and a mu*derer) made it in life.

Anyways, the ML and just about everyone else are portrayed as hard working professionals and rather normal people, nobody perfect. To me, this novel was missing something, maybe some good deeds or purpose, although seeing a 50years old man surviving devastation and starting from scratch is sort of heroic, of course. The problem is that he got an incredible advantage this time - a new body blessed by gods (he was not beautiful nor young before) and God-level skills in acting, singing, dancing, high EQ and IQ, etc. So it was a smooth sailing for him. The only challenge he faced was to believe in eternal love again after his first marriage failed. But his new hubby managed to convince him to take the risk. Their first kiss was when both were accidentally drugged (smoked pot) in ch 52, but that was not the moment when they got together or one began the pursuit of the other. This is a v e r y slow burn romance with a v e r y reluctant pair of participants.

In short, well written, very well translated, full of great insights into entertainment industry and fandom works, but missing something special that would make me feel happy or touched by grace as I was reading it.

Started off pretty well but winded up being quite annoyed by the middle. The rise of MC's career felt kind of ridiculous, the romance felt kind of forced, his attitude towards his ex husband and ex protege was so calm it's absurd and ex protégé seducing ex husband also didn't make sense.

MC's career -> the way the author writes it, MC became an a list star from two supporting roles which in itself doesn't really make sense. But on top of that, despite his huge popularity, he was only... more>> offered ONE lead role in a movie about a ridiculous subject? I mean if you want to paint the picture that he's massively popular from 2 supporting roles and one MV appearance, fine, at least stick with the program instead of suddenly reducing this 'status' by having him only have one offer as a lead role.

Spoiler

Secondly, why does the movie have to be about male supermodels?! Like honestly, was it just a convenient tool to use so that the author could have MC appear in fashion shows and once again appear with the damned ML. Like cmon, there's no such thing as a male supermodel in the first place. If you look at the earnings of the top models in the world, they're ALWAYS just WOMEN. Male models just aren't that as influential or sought after compared to female models. It doesn't even make sense as subject matter.

[collapse]

My final peeve is that MC is clearly super competent given that he built up his career from nothing in his first life but in this life, except for his first TV show and MV appearance, all of his projects are somehow tied to ML. It's just pretty annoying because MC is given this image that he's really capable but somehow in his second life, he's just hanging off ML? It feels like MC is just being smothered into uselessness. Like his achievements all have to have something to do with ML. Even his movie with XZ was achieved for him with ML's help. I don't know if it's because the author just wants MC and ML to have fluffy or romantic moments but it just becomes annoying that MC's career is filled with ML's appearances and help. At least let him achieve more by himself and let them stand together as equals. Also I hate that the author talked about how scenes between MC and ML look ambiguous. They're supposed to be amazing actors, it's not at all romantic that their scenes look ambiguous when they're acting out scenes together, it's just unprofessional and incompetent.

romance -> ML's touchiness is really annoying. MC dislikes it at first but ML pushes on and keeps touching him until MC has to CLEARLY tell him to stop. As someone who also doesn't like people casually invading my personal space, it was super irritating to me that ML kept touching him even when he knew MC didn't like it (like when MC would slide his hand off) until MC had to outright tell him to stop. It felt more like harassment. If MC didn't mind or if MC liked it, fine. But he didn't so it's not ok. Also, after ML and MC's relationship first changed, ML just felt way way way too forceful for my taste. Every step of the way, it felt more like he was just pushing forward and MC was kind of retreating to accommodate him. If he did those things and MC's happy, I wouldn't mind since that's like making your partner happy. But he was just doing it for his own self satisfaction irregardless of whether his partner was ok with his behavior or not.

Spoiler

I was also especially irritated with the scene whereby they were in the water but ML took the opportunity to try to slide his hand into MC's pants and also changed the scene so he kissed MC. MC hadn't made up his mind about their relationship at that point and it was literally in front of camera crew and staff and they were doing a scene. Honestly if MC liked it or something, fine. But. He. Didn't. So that's just ML taking advantage of the fact MC can't reject him without ruining the scene and alerting the crew. That's literally mol*st and harassment.

[collapse]

MC's attitude towards his ex husband and ex protege -> I mean cmon MC devoted all his time effort and money into his ex husband and he also really helped out his ex protege but they both betrayed him by cheating with each other and later killing him and using his name to try to continue a movie. But somehow, MC seemingly just lets it go and does NOTHING to them AT ALL? Like I can somewhat understand if MC fully distanced himself from them to live his own life but he didn't? Like acting in a movie with SSB and then taking up that project with XZ as a director. How? Like somehow within a year, you can somehow forget that they betrayed and killed you and you can just act a bit standoffish when they're around but otherwise be ok? Has MC reached nirvana or something? He's ascending and has discarded all human emotion? If he at least reacted with some anger or avoidance, like trying to kick SSB or XZ off the movies or rejecting those projects because how can anyone humanly stand to be around the two people who BETRAYED and KILLED you, fine. But nope. He literally did nothing.

ex protege seducing ex husband -> totally didn't make sense. I mean... what was his point in seducing the ex husband? He already secured a role in the movie! And also, ex husband's situation seems pretty inferior compared to MC. without MC, ex husband clearly can't achieve much since at this stage, he still can't even film a movie without MC's investment. So even if ex husband is seduced and leaves MC, there's literally nothing that SSB can get that he can't get from being MC's protégé. It would actually make way more sense if SSB tried to seduce MC himself or used MC to seduce someone else. Why MC's ex husband? He literally achieves nothing that he doesn't already have and he risks losing everything.

so... all in all, very disappointed with this book. Very. Very. Disappointed. Even more disappointed considering I just read another of the author's books and I really really liked it. <<less
