Xiu is very devoted, to the extremes, but you can tell that he is like that because of his intense love for Du Ze. Likewise, Du Ze believes in him, much like how we as readers believe in our favorite fictional characters. This story has great angst and fluff and comedy and (NSFW scenes). The world building is amazing as well. The secrets of the story, Du Ze finding out about hidden plot points, and even the "real life" perspective of the author... It was written very well and I would 10/10 definitely reread. All I can say is that: The Reader and Protagonist Definitely have to Be in True Love. Wishing Du Ze and Xiu the happy ending that they deserve. <<less

This is one novel I'd definitely take my time to reread, even if the face slapping isn't that extravagant. This was so so, sooooo sweet! I rarely read danmei written in the gong's perspective but this flowed so especially well, I couldn't put it down nonetheless. To counter that one bad review at ch20 which made me put off this amazing novel for so long: no. the romance is not illogical.... more>> di qiuhe did NOT just randomly fall in love out of the blue. it was a slow, gradual and adorable process. this whole story is great, from the romance to the plot to the character development. He Bai, as the MC, was a treat to read. He may be a seasoned scenery photographer in his last life but in this life, he went through the route of portrait photography instead. Sure his retouching skills and past experience gave him a leg up but he was still conscientious enough to fight on even grounds by doing something he is newer at and excelling and falling for it in the process. He is also really adamant in helping Di Qiuhe... Puppy is really Childish Di's biggest golden finger and lucky charm. The novel's bad guys get resolved pretty smoothly thanks to plot but I still liked this novel because of the romance. They're so adorable and cute together, it's what makes this novel dear in my eyes. <<less

Reading the novel is painfully sweet, especially if you listened to the audio drama songs during the time. Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian fit so well with one another and this novel perfectly encapsulates the journey of their high school love. There’s lots of fluffy moments, one that makes your cheek hurt as you squeal and grin to yourself as you watch the show of two silly boys navigating through their feelings together.

And then you get hit by the angst. I’ve been aware of it the whole time while reading so all the fluffy moments ended up tasting bittersweet. The angst hits you when you least expect it. It comes in subtle moments of realization as Sheng Wang and Jiang Tian slowly reveal how the neglect they faced, show up in their habits in life.

Just as you’re getting used to it, you get hit by the blunt knife of a messy confession and a hasty departure that left the two with a broken promise of never letting go. In all actuality, the angst is only there for a couple of chapters. But the impact is SO strong because of all the sweetness that was fed to us before.

We, the readers, know how well they fit together, how happy they are with each other. But, we can also understand how life sometimes just doesn’t work out as planned by two boys aged 17-18. That’s what hurts. It’s realistic, and god, Mu Su Li, that’s what I love about your novels.

No shit, I cried. While writing this my nose feels sore and my eyes are puffy but I just have to get these words out. TianWang are so good together, that’s why it’s devastating how they are apart. Sheng Wang loses that vigour and brightness to him, receding behind walls until he becomes similar to Jiang Tian. Meanwhile Jiang Tian is away in a foreign country, looking through old photos and silently greeting his loved one without showing himself.

By chance, they meet again and, god, the amount of tears that I have cried. There is some hesitation before they reunite for real but once they do—they slide against each other perfectly. TianWang got the life they wanted, while it may not be exactly as what they envisioned (living together in uni and raising their cat son together) the end destination is still the same: together.

It may have come 6 years too late but that’s alright. They have all the time in the world—to win over their parents, to make up for lost time, to love and be loved in return.

Read “A Certain Someone/Mou Mou” and listen to their audio drama songs too. 10/10 will reread, would cry over, and would forever recommend. Wishing TianWang happiness for the rest of their lives. <<less

I cried, heavily. I squealed, multiple times. I couldn’t put it down, finishing this in two sleepless nights. Qi Yu and Fu Yansheng have made it to my list of most fave characters ever. Their ideals, their convictions, the way they draw each other in and orbit around each other. Their story is beautiful.

I didn’t expect this to be angsty at first, I knew it was gonna be tension filled because of the whole “showdown” aspect. But I didn’t expect for their love and feelings to blow me away. Fu Yansheng is one HELL of a male lead. He’s Qi Yu’s teacher, confidant, his friend, his think tank, his safe space, and his lover… While Qi Yu makes Complex Number be rational and irrational at the same time, makes him feel proud with his true temperament and choices, surprises him with his growth, and touches his heart in ways no one has ever done before.

A bit of a spoiler here: I loved how they handled their careers after falling in love. Qi Yu greatly appreciates Fu Yansheng’s talents as an aide but still chose to ask FYS not to resign from his undercover work. He loves the FYS who pursues justice, who does the hard job in the dark… even at the cost of their time spent together. Meanwhile FYS meets QY in the middle and chooses a more passive role in the organization, becoming an instructor for future agents. No shit, I was crying and was just. So. Happy. For them. I am so glad for all these coincidences that led them to each other. So glad that Qi Yu was reckless and kissed an unfamiliar man at a bar. So glad that FYS was petty and chose QY as his infiltration target. So glad that they fell in love over the course of this tension filled plot and so glad… that they can love out in the open… hu.. cries (it is 4am and im emotional) <<less

A short but incredibly thought provoking, tragic, but hopeful read. Have you ever thought about the fate of the original goods in a transmigration novel? What if the original goods never died and their lives were forcibly taken from them, and they had to endure years of some stranger living their life, getting along with their husband, and even endangering their son in the process? Caught your eye? Let me amp it up. What if the husband was aware that their lover was replaced, and they spent years calculating against the imposter, watching his 'husband' have ambiguous relationships with other men, unable to do anything against the imposter for fear of hurting his husband's original... more>> body, slaving away in research to find a way to bring the original back? Interesting, yeah? That's just the premise.

This whole novel tells the after effects of the couple (and their son)'s tragedy. And how they, despite all the hate and despair and pain, they overcome that and find comfort. Their love was tarnished with so many of those negative feelings but they rose above that and intellectually solved their problem. Not much romance but I liked it because the world building is just so RAW and unparalleled. It's an incredibly interesting read, and I'll always have a place for it on my shelf. <<less

This is one of my fave "falling in love with a stand-in" novels. No unnecessary dogblood, exceptionally characterized people, copious amounts of fluff and comedy, as well a tinge of bittersweet angst that culminates to a happy and tearful end.I have to say, the MC Xue Yingshuang is an absolute unit. As someone who's a bit of a study worm when it comes to subjects I like, it's refreshing to read about someone who shares the same joy in learning. His tenacity and enthusiasm is so infectious that it's no wonder the ML and everyone else around him fell.... more>>

Now, for the ML Xing Yun, he fits the puppy gong trope the best. There's one passage in the novel that describes him best, and once you reach that part, you'll understand why. HE IS SO CUTE MAN.

But I have to say, my fave character is the white moonlight Bai Qianyi (?? Imtled it so not sure if this is his name). He's not some villain or anything and it's SO REFRESHING TO SEE him not be a white lotus bit*h like in other novels.

One of the most riveting reads I've had the pleasure of encountering. Words alone cannot fully express how much I loved this. Everything from the plot to the incredibly fleshed out characters to the slow burn romance is AMAZING. 

Reading through the story, I've seen just how important perspective is. To quote Stella Jang, "We all pretend to be the heroes on the good side, but what if we're the villains on the other?" I found BQM and HWZ so annoying but in the end, I started to actually like BQM as a character and felt immense pity for HWZ. But this change is only possible due to my omniscient position as a reader of all "three": Abusive Romance, God of Annihilation, and this one, Devil Venerable, can acquire and enjoy. The way author daren executed their character arc was impressive and I liked it terribly so.

Even the other supporting characters were memorable and important. They weren't just plot devices, they had character and LIFE injected into them. From dumb but straightorward Sister Congxue to salacious but wise Sister Shu to the incredibly overworked genius Zhongli Qian, they are a reason why this novel is memorable.

Now, for the main characters. I'll start with the male lead shou, Yin Hanjiang. His character arc development from being WRE's devoted little wolf pup to a heartbroken, obsessive subordinate to an equal who seeks to protect WRE and allows himself to be protected in turn... I cried a bit when they were healing his inner demons. How can someone love so starkly, so brightly as he? And how fortunate that he learns that love can be acquired, and that he need not put his Venerable on a pedestal.

Oh. The Venerable. Wenren E. He is my favourite. Not just because he's a rare gong protag. Not just because he's handsome and incredibly badass. It's because of his convictions, and ideals, and the fact that the so called Demon Lord—is just a mortal human who seeks to protect the common people. I loved how the book handled the righteous and demonic sects. The irony of the righteous sect's nefarious deed juxtaposizing WRE's kindness and view for the greater good was amazing. I loved the worldbuilding and the universe the book is set in.

10/10 would reread again. EDIT: Went to check the author's other works and found out they also wrote They All Say I've Met a Ghost and Mr. Melancholy. NO WONDER THIS WAS SO INTELLECTUALLY AND EMOTIONALLY PLEASING.  <<less

This was so cute. Easy to MTL too! Pretty slow burn romance, ML falls first but they stay as friends for a long time. They were "enemies" and ML was so annoyed and disgusted by MC's og identity that he never bothered putting up his nice and polite facade around him, making MC be wary around him the entire time. But then he fell in love and GOD to see him regret his past treatment.. LMAO

Still, MC returns his feelings IN SPITE of the past. Because ML was there to teach him, to guide him, to accompany him, to BELIEVE in him. ML taught MC how to be brave (EVEN BEFORE HE REALIZED HE FELL IN LOVE). I loved watching the developing feelings between these two boys and I'm so glad... they're happy together now.

WARNING FOR SECOND HAND EMBARRASSMENT: ML may be the protag of the novel but he has no golden halo. HE GETS INTO SO MUCH SHIT. MC is also a whole circus on his own, not the mention his tr*sh system. Take as many breaks as needed to scream at their idiotic high-school selves. <<less
