As has been mentioned in another review, this is the extended version of "After the White Moonlight came back, the Stand-in Fell into Unemployment Crisis" - which is also translated (thanks dear translator for giving us both versions!) on CG.

I read the short version first, and I think both versions are good in their own way and worth reading. Nothing revolutionary here, plot is pretty cliché, but both versions manage to tell a sweet and at time heart-wrenching story. I think I liked the short version a little more, since... more>> it was so funny (and unexpectedly emotional!), but this one does a good job of further fleshing out the characters, developing their background and showing how the CP gradually fall in love. It's less laugh-out-loud funny, but still has a good humorous tone and sweetness. You can read both and each will have a unique quality.

The ML has a reason to struggle with love, while the MC actually has low self-esteem.

Also refreshing that the white moonlight is an actual nice person who helps the CP. <<less

There are only 60 chapters and the MC still thinks it's a job at chapter 50 and refuses anything other than that. It was cute at the start and then it gets dragging. Obliviousness has it's limit.

This is one of my fave "falling in love with a stand-in" novels. No unnecessary dogblood, exceptionally characterized people, copious amounts of fluff and comedy, as well a tinge of bittersweet angst that culminates to a happy and tearful end.

I have to say, the MC Xue Yingshuang is an absolute unit. As someone who's a bit of a study worm, it's refreshing to read about someone who shares the same joy in learning. His tenacity and enthusiasm is so infectious that it's no wonder the ML and everyone else around... more>> him fell.

Now, for the ML Xing Yun, he fits the puppy gong trope the best. There's one passage in the novel that describes him best,

From being a noble dog that disdains others to being a stray dog that yearns for love but is too cautious to go near to being his happy puppy self that shows love with his tail hanging high...

and once you reach that part, you'll understand why. HE IS SO CUTE MAN.

But I have to say, my fave character is the white moonlight Bai Qianyi (?? Imtled it so not sure if this is his name). He's not some villain or anything and it's SO REFRESHING TO SEE him not be a white lotus bit*h like in other novels.

He also gets to fulfill his dream of being a salted fish with a boyfriend :)) He gets tgt with a younger "wolfish" gong who becomes an actor in the future. And it's all because of his experience tutoring Xue Yingshuang and his occupational English disease LMAO the extra was kinda short and I would not mind a spin-off based on him but aaaa I am satisfied with the way it ended.

Xue Yingshuang manages to conquer ML's mom using the same method he used with all the others: his enthusiasm for learning and considerate care. Mama became his tutor in politics and had to surrender cos she felt that her brain would get s**ked dry LOL But she saw how her son was happy with MC and ah the realization scene made me so happy I liked it a lot.

Short and sweet, a good read with more to it than you might expect.

On the surface, the plot is somewhat clichéd but what really sets this novel apart is the emotional depth of the characters. Unlike some novels which are driven by characters being oblivious to the emotions of others, the MC, ML and bai yueguang are able to come to understand each other and work through some of their deeper issues.

I couldn't resist running off to MTL the whole thing but it will be well worth the wait for the translation which should be able to convey the touching emotions in this novel much better. <<less

Lol here we go down into the rabbit hole of a review of reviews again: it’s clear from the getgo that the gong looks at this as purely a job that the shou is doing. Plus if the shou was actually falling in love with the gong people would get just as upset about that. Also please don’t lie and call this gong a puppy gong next time. Or clearly only the shou/victim is to ever be blamed for something.

This is a wholesome feels good novel.

The premise is a cliche dog-blood drama, I brace myself for the drama but got hit with wholesomeness instead.

The ML is the most annoying jerk at the beginning, but his character is very believable, and the more you know him, the cuter he get.

For 60ch, this is a light feel good novel, I'd say give it a try inbetween heavy novels.

And seeing the ML and white moonlight fight for the MC's admiration for once is quite refreshing

I have read the shorter spin-off of this novel and already have written a review for that so I will keep this short since I am lazy like that. Everything I wrote there also applies here, just that here the characters have actual names.

Another difference is that we actually get to know the character more thoroughly and in a more in-depth way. We get to know their backgrounds, history and thought process behind their actions which makes all the characters much more vivid.

Along with the added information we actually get... more>> painted a more realistic and sometimes depressing reality compared to the shorter spin-off where things are kept light-hearted most of the time as the spin-off put more emphasis on being humorous. This is good as it allowed me to gain a new perspective on the plot even when the overall plot has not changed. It was refreshing and not at all boring.

I would definitely recommend reading this novel. <<less

First read the shorter version but I saw that this one was getting translated. Since there are still few chapters, I went ahead and read the mtl.

I can only say that this is one of my favorite white moonlight/ substitute story. It takes the form of a cliche dog blood story but the actual novel shows you beyond the 2D caricature of these characters.

The gong started out as your typical domineering CEO but it will later be revealed that he's just a silly little dog that needs love.

The shou started... more>> out as a very practical stand in who doesn't care about feelings but we later see his insecurities and desire to be better.

The white moon light is your typical refined shou but he's not a white lotus, though he's a bit snobby at the start. But readers will later learn to love his character.

Basically, I love all the characters here. Even the "evil madam" who tried to bribe the shou to stay away from the gong.

Character development is top notch too!!! <<less

This novel has more detailed events than the spin-off, making it more a slice of life genre than a hilarious novel.

I also love this since the scenarios are well thought. However, I some scenes are too lengthy and makes me bored. So will probably read it bit by bit instead

This is the detailed, drawn-out version of the already existing and completed story "After the White Moonlight came back, the Stand-in Fell into Unemployment Crisis", which I adored. That one is written in a very distinct, brief, style, with no character names, in order to play with the story tropes it is poking fun at, evolving from a genre-savvy comedy to a very sweet romance.

"Stand-in Refuses to Become a Regular" takes the minimalistic style of the original, and uses it as an outline. It expands the original into a standard... more>> novel style, with full details and descriptions.

While this one will be absent the artistic touch that made the original so unique, it is still well written and, if it stays true to the set outline, promises to be a very good, though standard, telling of the "romantic stand in becomes the new romantic lead" type of story. <<less

Was a fun light hearted novel that I started to pass up time, but it got harder and harder to read.

I feel like, for what kind of story it is, they made it too long. Its charm started being lost and the running around in circles got tiring.

Wish I was able to finish it, but I am too exhausted right now to continue this kind of story that gives me crumbs of satisfaction just to take them away by the end of each chapter.

This novel is really good. Glad that ive read this extended version. I imagine myself frustrated if I've read the first version which is just 30~ chapters... Too short! Extended version is enough to show all the transitions between the characters emotionally and mentally. Thanks to all the contributors of this novel (author, trans, etc.)

Apparently there's a shorter spin off of this novel, which I haven't read yet.

I got secondhand embarassment because of the ML's thoughts. Lol I am on the verge of giving up because I feel annoyed with the MC, although I understand where his thoughts are coming from, his low self esteem and etc, but my heart is hurting for YX. Good thing that everything turns out really well after awhile.

Also, kuddos to YX's white moonlight, BQ. I like that he's not an evil schemer unlike in other novels where the... more>> 3rd party is always plotting some bad things against the MC. Glad that he found his one true love and happiness as well. So everyone got their happily ever after. (◍•ᴗ•◍) ❤ Overall, highly recommended for those who want short fluffy novel without too much angst and dog blood drama, I still considered this as light hearted. <<less

One of the most beautiful stories I've ever read ❤️ It started like a cliche but the deeps of each character and how they evolved and grow it's beautiful. I really like how even though the ML got a bad temper he wasn't aggressive or mean to mc; there was only one time when his emotion flared up and he acted on them.

ML white moonlight, who our MC was a substitute for, is suchhhhhh a darling ❣️😭 he deserves to be a moonlight. I'll love to have someone like that... more>> as my friend and love interest. He's such a sober and realistic person and more than anything he really likes ML as a friend.

Anyway it's a good read. Not crazy angst or mess up plots. Just 3 people searching for happiness on their own ways (⁠*⁠˘⁠︶⁠˘⁠*⁠) ⁠.⁠｡⁠*⁠♡ <<less

Story was very cute and sweet at first, bit it just kept dragging on for no reason.

My fave has got to be BQ. He comes off as the typical white lotus but man just really wants to quite his job and be a salted fish. Which, completely valid.

I laughed and cried while reading this. XYS and XY lives were miserable during childhood so am glad that they end up together.

I thought I was gonna hate XY's white moonlight Bai but he became one of my favorite character in the story. You may also find XY's mother a little hateful at first but you'll realize she is just doing it for his son's sake. One of my fave interaction actually comes from XY and his mother haha. Everytime his mother wants to prove XYS is not worthy of... more>> XY she'd find herself dissing his son instead. 🤣 I lol-ed so hard everytime she nitpick XYS' cooking skills then realized it was his son's cooking she was providing a negative review hahaha.
