ZhouXiang didn’t know if God was giving him a second chance to live because he wanted to give him extra loving care or was it because he hasn’t messed with him enough.

Otherwise, how could it be that both in and out of his entertainment career, whether it was in his past life or his current life, YanMingXiu would consider him as the substitute for the same person.

He also didn’t know, between him and Young Master Yan, who was actually more pitiful; the one who could only be treated as a substitute or the one could only find a substitute.

In his past life, ZhouXiang was the stuntman for the big star WangYudong.

But not just as his martial art stuntman…..

Even within his deeply ill-fated relationship with YanMingXiu, he was also undeniably a complete substitute.

Disheartened, ZhouXiang went with a group of documentary film crew into the deep valleys of the treacherous mountains. Unexpectedly, he lost his footing and fell off a cliff .

When he awakened again, it was already two years later. Nevertheless, he awakened in another person’s body.

What is even more tragic is that he still couldn’t escape the fate of being a substitute…

T/N: 替身: Tishen is a person who replaces another; a substitute, in filming the tishen is a stuntman/body-double.

The story itself can be given a 3.75/5, but the writing is a dismal 2/5.

Let me first vent my grievances about the writing, and then I'll proceed to talk about the story.

What irked me the most is that the author has the tendency to use the most sexist ways to describe characteristics she deems unflattering. For instance, the author will say, 'He wasn't a scheming woman' or 'he didn't want to act like a girl.' It looks like the author either doesn't have a rich vocabulary or has a very... more>> prejudiced opinion of women. It was grating to read these parts. Now, coming to the flow, it gets very melodramatic and feels absurd to the point of being comical. Also, smut scenes were described as if a 14-year-old wrote them. Who says 'warm meat hole' and 'tall met pole'? I mean, come on!

Okay, now that my grievances have been aired, let's talk about the story.

This is a good crematorium novel with a fair amount of dog blood. Is the ML scum in the beginning? Yes. Does he atone for his past wrongdoings? Also, yes. Was I, as a reader, able to forgive him? Yes.

In a major part, I was able to forgive the ML because he was 21 years old when the story began. He is childish, immature, exacting, stubborn, and doesn't know how to regulate or understand his feelings. Also, he isn't very deceptive; he's just plain cold. So, some of the blame lies with the MC for not catching on sooner. The MC is by no means a simpleton, but in matters of the heart, he feels a bit dense. It was also hard to understand why some side characters were obsessed with the MC.

Overall, this story will keep you hooked and probably consume you for a few days, but it won't stay with you afterwards. <<less

BEWARE of SPOILER

Yan Ming Xiu, ML, cameo in an ABO novel also written by Shui Qian Cheng. This novel received a lot of 1 star on NU because of the substitute plot.

Basically, Yan Ming Xiu had a crush on a guy's back and because he couldn't get that guy (he mistook someone else as the guy and that someone else was in a relationship with his sister), he hired (old) Zhou Xiang (MC) to be the substitute. And when he realized that he had fallen in love with (old) Zhou... more>> Xiang, who was assumed dead, he hired (young) Zhou Xiang to be the substitute. Then he realized that the guy, (old) Zhou Xiang, and (young) Zhou Xiang were basically the same person.

The first 1/3 was about Yan Ming Xiu and (old) Zhou Xiang, the next 2/3 was about him and (young) Zhou Xiang, and the rest was after he found out everything and started chasing his 'wife'.

Yan Ming Xiu was ice cold (the usual CEO characteristics in most novels/dramas) when it came to everyone else but, towards the one he loved, he's practically a child; especially so towards Zhou Xiang. I found it endearing and annoying at the same time. Zhou Xiang once mentioned that he couldn't be angry too long with Yan Ming Xiu because of this.

Do take note that most of Shui Qian Cheng novels have r*pae tag on it. Including this one. <<less

There were many ups and downs in the novel and also with my reading speed. Took a while to catch back in but I did like the angst and pain between the MC and ML.

Looking at the elements of a good crematorium novel...

Dog blood/abuse: yes, good enough. Acceptable levels for me without going overboard. Yes, ML is an as*hole for taking MC as a body substitute (more physical) but the emotional aspect of ML falling for MC is sufficiently clear.

'Revenge' phase where ML gets his just desserts: ok, could be better. ML's suffering was somewhat satisfying, but it's obvious that ML was too young and immature in the pre-death phase such that it's frustrating because MC is in a different life stage/view on... more>> life altogether. The growth and character progression for ML was too sudden for me that made it unbelievable; maybe some earlier understanding of his military family background creating his cold personality would have helped make him more likeable.

Chasing and forgiveness: Too short, makes MC look like an indecisive loner who is a face-con that is a bit desperate for love. Sorry, he's not a strong enough character for my taste. Most of the novel is him being treated as a substitute and him slowly/suddenly realising that hey that's not what I want, but gets subverted so quickly with just, if I recall correctly, two main bursts of confession (speech) from ML. He has moments of 'no I will not fall for this', 'if the relationship were defined as casual I will not get emotionally involved' where he is on the edge of being a great likeable character for me, since I enjoyed and understood his casual attitude to life with his financial/familial/s*xual orientation backstory. But he throws it out the window without sufficient build up—like his mental state never wavered before his new identity was revealed even with so many hints along the way, then suddenly he flips a switch after.

Like even in MC's career he can't get it together. At multiple points he's like no, I just want a stable income and that's enough. Continuously gets whacked by the industry and the guy he's substituting for multiple time (revenge for this part was not very satisfying also). Says no, doesn't need ML's help/investment. But then just goes along and relies on his friends and ML and doesn't have a strong go-getter attitude to start somewhere new or do something different for goodness sake. I would be fine if it were justified properly why he chose (yes I think the lead up to his situation tried to make it seem like there was no choice, but really there was still a choice) to take the same path again vs pre-death but it was not really.

Eventual fluff: pretty good from an objective lens... but I was too upset from the previous stage of insufficient unsatisfying chasing that I couldn't properly enjoy the fluff.

Overall, I enjoyed most of the novel, up till chapter 70-ish? At that point, wished the ML were more mature (his suffering was clearly articulated which was great, but the source of his intense emotions were not clear) but could still appreciate the drama. Then it became an itch I couldn't properly scratch. Had the potential to be so much better. Did not cry while reading. <<less

Too much of a dogblood drama but the story"s interesting. I felt so angry with Mingxu and felt pity with Zhou Xiang. No lies tho, I felt so frustrated with both of them haha.

But glad that it's still an HE.

Read this twice. It’s very heart wrenching — and tear jerking. Very tragic but the ending is happy. Just the journey getting there was difficult.

I came here only to say, sis, if you're not here for the dog blood, go back.

Anyways, moving on, this is the 2nd Novel I'm reading from the author but I can't say if I like her work or not, but I do know if I want to read some angst im sure typing her name in the search box.

This book; well written, although the whole coming back to life thing played in a realistic modern world feels off. She tried to bridge it between fantasy and reality but that... more>> didn't work too well. There's still some things that put me off.

Regardless, I just want to say Zhou certainly deserves better. Infact, the only person that respected him like a person was Cai We. Lan was very self centred and selfish, he didn't deserve to keep sticking to his side like a friend and I hated him from from start to end!!

All the same, give this book a read. <<less

I dont get how every one is blaming the ML for indirectly killing the MC. Yes MC run away to avoid but problem was ML didn't control the weather neither where he goes. He did run away cuz of him but aside from that, that accident wasn't his fault. If we apply the same logic wasn't Cai Wei also have some fault? Cuz he's the one who put him there. And if we put the same logic wasnt also that wang guy also at fault why ML confined the mc?... more>> If we're going to point fingers who is at fault wasnt that nasty wang had more contribution to the consequences of their actions?

Dont get me wrong ML is just plain sht. How he dealt with a problem also a sht. Always begging MC. Always asking, always dumb. Why dont you do something that will make him stay!?

And that Lan guy infuriates me and idk why. He was like xiang ge, XIANGE GE! XiAnG gE wuu. Fck him.

I really find ML as a stubborn child. Not overbearing, the nasty stubbornness of a child. He had 3 years to reflect but he still question why MC hates him. It really not my taste that the ML is younger and act young.

Aside from Cai Wei and older bro Yan none of the characters are really good. They are the only mature here. And may add that's also makes this good, at least they have personalities unlike other stories that have plain characters. I am complaining but the story is good and characters is alive.

I think if they met later when ML is mature enough and MC was a bit younger, their situation would be different. Tbh, I personally don't like how conflict was solve, not that I want it prolonged. I would have it had time skip and that moment they met again they are ready. They needed to heal, ML from his grievances and MC for his heart broken after all MC didn't had the time to do so

They looked like teenager running around solving their problem with love. Cringey af. <<less

Same energy like Deep Into The Act, with completely different plot and twist. Both are my fav. 😍 Mannn I was so frustrated with ML, he's such a selfish guy! At least at first. Wink😜

Anyway, it is true that ML is too overbearing and forceful, I hate how he always corner MC, leave him with no choice. But mann I understand the plot and angst are necessary, for them to work and strengthen their love.

Despite everything, I really like this novel.

The story is not really tragic. The story is an HE, the only tragic part is the experiences of the MC. It is a try read if you find it interesting.

It's a 4 for me due to how boring it got for me in the end. My patience to read and understand the characters ran out in the near end. I truly persevered to finish it. Glad that I did, I felt accomplished for a second.🥳🥳

-Skipped to the ending from c95.

Does the ML have a back fetish? Lol.

I think the ML is younger than the MC.

... more>> Honestly liked this novel, not just because of the smut scenes but also the plot written. I won't go into detail but the plot is basically (?) centered around our ML and MC's romance of the past and their present. The past has a lot to do with their build up and death of our MC, as well as some misunderstandings and feelings.

I can understand why some may dislike the ML, since the ML is just like other guilty ML's out there, possessive/obsessed, paranoid, and clings onto the MC. However, I do think that the ML is truly guilty and tries to make up the years with MC, especially when the misunderstandings cleared up. The MC is a bit of a coward but I understand that he's been through a lot within the entertainment industry and his private relation with ML.

The smut scenes are well paced and the emotions of the MC is described well enough that the reader can give a brief understanding as well as some empathy. Also, in this novel I think some superstition plays a part since the MC's soul was transferred into another body with the same build and name as himself, though younger. As well as in some chapters how the MC brings up fate while the ML brings up god (especially in the last line of the epilogue).

Also, some of the scenes seems to be subtle r (*) pe, obviously from from the ML. Overall, a 5/5. <<less

Not gonna lie I felt like punching ML quite a lot. While MC is also in pain it was a struggle to see him acting irrational due to the stress he had to put up with.

This is 100% unhealthy as ML is pretty much the 2nd childish and unlikeable ML. I have a 1 spot for that but I probably haven't gone through a lot of angst novels with tr*shy ML's. In any case the redeeming quality for ML at least is that he did what he promised to MC... more>> after the second chance. That is like 5% better but the emotional damage for like majority of the novel won't make him like anymore.

But angst is angst it is what this story is about and it delivers. I only give this like a 4.

And remember people if that significant you don't suffer for the things they did to hurt you don't even consider getting back. <<less

This novel is very emotional and I cried too many time... even so I still love this novel and eat 97 chapters in one go.

It may take really really along time to see the sunshine and rainbow but it's worth it.

Now I do understand what warning at the 1st chapter all about...

... more>> MC is too nice and become s*upid because of face and love for ML.

I wish MC would be honest and stop with lies that just make sh*t worse.

I rarely see someone with MC luck and always be at wrong place over and over again... II wish I could unseen the 10~40 too painful for my taste. I cried a bit especially when we are getting closer to ch. 40

After ch.40 all I want to scream out is No, don't, you can't, don't accept it, here we go again and so on...

60 ch. in and all I feel is still pain... when will we get sunshine and rainbow?

ch.80 in and I'm still depressed. I never thought that this novel is so f**king depressing.

Spoiler

The boss of the companyis very suspicious with all traveling to Tibet. I bet he is the one that "gave" MC the second chance (I'm at ch. 93

I fell in inlove with this novel and its still one of the best novels I’ve read. I never give reviews but I can’t bare to see lower ratings on this story.

If you’re gonna start a novel please check the tags, if any of it makes you uncomfortable then don’t even start reading it and gives low rating due to its content because you’re just being unfair.

I you’re into angst and dog blood then you’re definitely gonna love this. I’ve read this story twice and still fell in love over... more>> and over with our MC. Such a precious bean.

Rating: 4/5- Angsty, messed up but a huge page turner. I was captivated.

I put this book off for quite some time as it was marked as a heavily angsty read. In my opinion, it wasn’t as terrible as some angst ridden novels I’ve read prior. I didn’t shed any tears for the characters. I think they were both complex and silly in their own ways and all the consequences they faced were because of their own decisions. These are two characters who are just destined for misery and they are... more>> both all too willing to accept that fact.

The author portrayed this quite well without it feeling exhaustive. I did feel bad for the MC to repeat the same mistakes from his previous life, but I also think that sometimes rebirth isn’t all it’s made out to be. In the MCs case we get to see how no matter how much he wishes things could be different, his choices still led him to repeat history which proves that perhaps you can’t escape your fate.

Overall the relationship was unhealthy from the start and in all honesty I don’t think the realism stuck to the end, which was the only disappointment for me, having such a strong premise with complex and frustrating characters- the ending fell flat with a very forced fluff type relationship. Maybe I’ll just being fussy but it felt really off tone after reading such struggles for over 100 chapters.

The ML has serious psychological issues that will affect their relationship not just from their first interaction but all the built up emotion from the 3 years of grief. The MC has serious self-esteem issues and trust issues that will always show itself in their relationship. I think the author set herself up with fantastic characters but even she was out of her league when it came to closing off their characters.

I really liked the MLs brother, definitely a favorite character of mine. All the other characters were suitable and well rounded. I’d have liked to see more punishment for the brother in law but I guess he got his ending.

Overall not as angsty as some have made it out to be. I feel like the characters are complex and realistic and the story played out as most likely as it could with their past interactions.

Very captivating overall so worth the read if you’re into relationship centred plots with heavy emphasis on emotional turmoil and bad choices. <<less

If you're a sucker of dog blood dramas, scum gongs, as in a**hole, jerk, bastard, you name it. Then congrats! You're in the right place.

On other hand, if you can't stand s*upid-slash-tr*sh-possesive MLs and s*upid-martyr MCs (well I wouldn't really call the MC s*upid, just a hopeless fool in love lol) then you better stay away or this story will just piss you off real good.

As for me, I'm the former. I'm not really a sucker of scum gong, hence I never though I'd like this, I just came for... more>> the angst and yes. The ANGST is real. If you don't mind the dog-blood drama.

Why call it dog blood?
Spoiler

I mean, I know the main driver of the plot is the rebirth part, but it's a pity that MC had to die first before ML own up to his feelings ☠️. You die and still give the ML second chance? Is life like an item that once you broke you can still repair it? And imagine you died then woke up in another body 2 years later, then they found your skeleton in a remote village. What will you do? Check out your own skeleton and plan your own funeral? Then you discovered the area was surrounded by armies (???seriously??? I'm just nobody-stuntman) brought by the obsessed ML. Then you saw ML locked himself up in a dark room with your own skeleton... Uhm. So there.

[collapse]

Aside from that, it's really written well. I love the pacing. I also love the ending which is very satisfying.
Spoiler

Except for the fact that the MC never even got to smack once on the face that guy surnamed Wang. Because of this guy I've become so vengeful.

It was really kind of funny to see some people who have read this warning others that this will be full of drama and if you're into fluff, you should skip this. I'm not from China and of course I grew up reading novels from my country, and I'm telling you, this is more tolerable than the novels I have read regarding to the attitude of the ML, I'm kind of immune to stories like this so I'm really into this plot. I really enjoyed reading this it's so good but my advice to who didn't read it yet read the flashback before reading the first 4 chapters
In the flashback in some parts I was really angry for how selfless the MC was and how arrogant the ML even after the flashback end th ML was so annoying but I think the punishment he got is ease my anger and make me bity him
I'm really happy with the plot and the ending result
