Translator here. Grey Uncle is SQC's 4th novel which she wrote around the time she graduated from university. She has expressed that she wasn't very satisfied with the writing, since she got distracted with writing her thesis and had less time for her 'children' aka the characters and developing the story. I do think this shows towards the end of the novel, which is a little abrupt and a little rushed. It was her second 188 novel, and like Sissy, this novel has a bit more social commentary than her... more>> later novels which tend to focus more on glamorous high class business people and deal less with the woes of the socially marginalized and the working class.

I personally don't think Grey Uncle is her best work if you compare it to later novels like Additional Inheritance, Years of Intoxication, My Little Poplar, or Blazing Armour, but it still excels by having a tight plot structure, no draggy parts, gripping emotional drama, and above all, relatable and psychologically realistic characters.

Our MC, Ding Xiaowei, is unlike most danmei shous, and really what makes this novel worth reading. I've seen several readers mention that he's the type that would normally be delegated the role of a side-kick or mob character in a story, and I think that's true. He's un-glamorous, down-to-earth, naïve, under-educated and from a humble background. His goals and dreams are very humble - all he wants at the beginning of the story is to find a nice wife who can be a mother to his little daughter and provide his home with a warm atmosphere, as well as earn enough money that he doesn't have to worry about daily necessities or struggle to provide for his family. His fantasies are kind of quaint because they're just naïve daydreams, and when he finally has the chance to get whatever he wants, he's still relatively low-key.

He's not a heroic character in the traditional sense. He acts rashly and sometimes makes s*upid decisions. He's stingy with money and obsessed with getting rich, but it makes sense when you consider his background, financial situation and the responsibility he feels towards both his daughter and his parents. He's quick to swallow his pride when it means some financial gain, but only when this can benefit his family, and he still has a strong moral compass and self-respect which makes him step back from doing things that might give him more benefits, but would also be against his personal ethics. He's proud, but not s*upidly so.

Overall I think that Ding Xiaowei is a loving and respectful portrayal of a typical working class guy. He's far from perfect (yes, he does have some prejudice and says stuff that aren't very politically correct, at least by Western sensibilities), but that's honestly what I find makes him so relatable.

The ML is one of the milder 188 gongs, which admittedly isn't saying much, since the whole concept in the 188 series is that the ML hurts, betrays, and sometimes even abuses the MC. This novel is no exception, and some of the parts are really heartbreaking for both the MC and the reader (I dread translating certain parts because I'll then have to relive Ding Xiaowei's pain). The angst is there and it's the typical well-written angst that SQC excels in - the angst that squeezes your heart and makes you cry for the MC. Zhou Jinxing still managed to make me absolutely furious, and honestly the first time I read the novel, I felt he didn't suffer nearly enough for what he did (I still think so).

However, when re-reading certain parts, knowing about his past - which only gets slowly revealed and as readers we only learn bits and pieces - certain scenes are heart-wrenching because of what he goes through. I'd say he fully deserved it (and should have had it worse), but those parts are still hard to read.

Zhou Jinxing is one of the smarter, more devious MLs in the 188 universe, and while he is twisted and scummy to some extent, it's still pretty impressive how he step by step works to get what he wants. In that sense he's on the same level as Luo Yi, although he's a bit more well-adjusted. He's also one of the few 188 gongs who isn't a crazy yandere.

There are some interesting side characters, such as Lingling, Ding Xiaowei's adorable little daughter who's quite perceptive for her age, and the young man that Ding Xiaowei befriends who has a crush on him (the obligatory second male lead that's there to make the ML jealous) and is trying to figure out his life while dealing with being gay.

Despite the dogblood drama in the plot, the characters all seem like real-life people. There's also quite a bit of foreshadowing in the novel, so it's worth paying attention to the details. E.g. It's funny how

Spoiler

Ding Xiaowei's wildly unrealistic daydream in chapter 1, which he himself realizes is taken directly from a day-time soap opera or idol drama, becomes true. He rescues a rich heir who in gratitude showers him with money, and by the end of the story he has both wealth and has found happiness with his beautiful male 'wife'. It's just that the 'rescue' that ZJX is grateful for isn't that DJX saved his life, but because he brought him a taste of love and family life - so ZJX uses his wealth to keep the 'simple and good life' from the novel title by keeping DXW by his side.

[collapse]

All in all it's a well-written story, and not too emotionally abusive or violent compared to some of the more well-known books in the 188 series. It's a relatively down-to-earth take on the 'wife chasing in the crematorium'-trope and as such a good entry point to the series as a whole and the author's work in general. <<less

I'm still left with just one of the 188 books but I consider Ding Xiaowei to be one of my favourite MC of them all because of his character and how he did his best for others. He feels like a real life character, someone we would see in our daily life and not a fictional character. I can really feel his struggles as a single parent, trying to put bread and butter on the table for his beloved daughter and parents. He is a really good dad and son.

In... more>> my opinion, I do not think the gong is that bad this time except for the lies he told and sort of ignored of MC and daughter but isn't this the case for family feuds because they couldn't tell of such relationships to their family? I was mad when that happened because Xiaowei is such a good person and he deserves better but I don't hate ML to the core. I love how ML is great at housework and taking care of kids. Seeing them as a family together felt so warm and fuzzy. Needless to say, the car scenes were great too. The two of them are so bold and delicious. The lunar new year extra was a great conclusion for their relationship too.

SQC mentioned that she wasn't very satisfied with this book but I truly felt it wasn't bad at all. <<less

I'm not sure if I can continue to read this. The blatant racism and sexism in the first chapter is very off putting, but this is the first time I've seen an author reveal the MC's character flaws so thoroughly in a single chapter. It's almost enough to convince me to continue reading. How will the author turn around a character who is poor, opportunistic, and narrow minded? The other review makes it clear that the ML is no spring chicken either. I think my main hesitation is the added... more>> bonus of this being a family story. The main characters may not be good people by nature, but they will strive to do better for the child right?

You can already tell that the MC is devoted to his daughter. She's a potentially disabled 'oil bottle', but he hasn't once considered giving up on raising her in his internal dialogue. He is sincere to her and most of his motivation to become wealthy is tied to being able to better take care of his family. He's not too tied to love (yet, or maybe he is disappointed by ex) and seems to be looking for a partner of convenience, so I'm not sure how loyal he will be in the future. I think it depends entirely on what temptations the author presents to him. He has such potential to be a slag. That said, his relationship with his daughter may be the breakthrough that redeems him as a character. It's obvious he has a moral bottom line considering his delusions of grandeur so not go beyond 'saving a wealthy person'. He has the hope to be rewarded for good deeds rather than the heart to consider criminal methods to quick wealth like ransom or theft.

He's not a person I would befriend, but he's the kind of person I've met hundreds of in real life. Desperate, but not willing to give up or give in. Demeaning of other people, but not one-sidedly blaming them for the results of his own choices. Not a criminal, but working for a terrible company with illegitimate business practices (they make knock off jewelry of big brands). An average guy exhausted working 9-5.

ML is still an unknown other than what the title and summary hint at. C0 makes it very clear that this series tends to sadomasochistic dogblood plots. I imagine he can only be more flawed than the MC considering that their relationship is based on deception. It's currently implied that the ML is claiming amnesia, but it's just a pretense to stick around longer. It's just not going to be clear why without further reading.

I think I will enjoy the read as long as the characters grow and the plot remains as mild as the translator claims! This is only a review of the first chapter, so I have not rated the novel yet. <<less
