It's been a long time since I binged a novel and I must say: that was f*cking awesome. The protagonist got me fully involved in the plot, so much in fact, that I couldn't stop reading for the past 3 days.

What I truly like about the novel is the protag. He is a perfect mix of a good character and a villain with an awful personality + he doesn't make me feel disgusted. I don't have to cringe about him being an edgy kid saying lines like: "It's been a long time since I used 20% of my power". He's a collected individual, who's true to his desires but isn't someone who you can't relate to, as the way it is in chinese novels, where often being a homicidal rapist is portrayed as cool. No, Zich (protag) is in the worst case indifferent, at least after he's regression.

I sincerely recommend this novel. When I looked at the title I expected an wishy-washy pushover with overwhelming strength, but I got a protagonist who I feel is made of flesh and blood. <<less

At the beginning it started out with him weak and wanting to surviveWhich s why he had to go to the military (school)But at a certain point that changed.When he was turned to stone for two yearsIt just became a continuous repeat of "He fights against an opponent so strong that they are at Master (strongest) level! he isn't master! But then he somehow wins anayway" It's repetive, take away from the stakes and usually end up with him fainting.

Any and all injuries taken from these fights? Have no consequences in actual battle. Which just makes it seem like the author doesn't know how to create tension without introducing the next, stronger™ monster.

And while we're at the topic of "monster"

They're (at this point of the novel) a sort of game of russian roulette. But I can't really go into detail without giving spoilers so:

Here's the concept.

A long time before the novel even starts Human eradicated monsters in a big war, why? Fantasy racism, the reason the novel gives is that due to prejudice people didn't believe that these monsters had sentience and all of them were evil. The people who lead this literal witch hunt were the impirial family which is how they came into power and stayed so for atleast a thousand years.

The Impirial Family are introduced as bad guys, not only because all the power they have is from a genoiced but also because they betrayed the MC in the first chapter.

So far so (actually) good.

The monsters that went into hiding in order to escape total annihilation come back and want revenge, in order to do that they made a deal with dark gods, often betraying the good or doing other morally bad things in order to gain the power to whoop ass. It gives them a sense of moral grayness. Their motivation are entirely justified, no questions asked. They way they go on to do their revenge? No so much.

In contrast to that is the MC who also got betrayed by the Impirial family has vocalized his hatred towards them throughout the story quite a bit. His solution is to make the north independent and take the power from the center (impirial power) throughout this war and probably charge them guilty for most of the crimes they have committed.

A long story short he wants revenge without sacrificing his moral in comparision to the monsters.

Making this war quite morally interesting.

The problem I have is that the battlefield introduced until now are all the same

Northeast battle:

-Monster (humanoid) corrupt/take hostage a dive being/thing

-They open a portal for less sentient but op Monsters from the side of the evil gods they are in contract with to come in.

-This is bad because it can literally ruin the Land itself (think fantasy nuke)

-Iron stops this, makes contract/gets help from with said devine being.

Eastern battle:

-Monster (humanoid) corrupt/take hostage a dive being/thing

-They open a portal for less sentient but op Monsters from the side of the evil gods they are in contract with to come in.

-This is bad because it can literally ruin the Land itself (think fantasy nuke)

-Iron stops this, makes contract/gets help from with said devine being.

North battle (until now) :

-Monster (humanoid) corrupt/take hostage a dive being/thing

-They open a portal for less sentient but op Monsters from the side of the evil gods they are in contract with to come in.

-This is bad because it can literally ruin the Land itself (think fantasy nuke)

Of course there are some differences, some even quite important but overarchingly this is how it goes everytime. Pair this with the problem of the power system being used more as a mild suggestion for the MC rather than an actual limitation on who he can fight and win against and who not and every monster being either master (highest) level or being described as "similiar" "close" "or theoretically speaken" to that level.

the monsters are describes as this ultra force that needs to be reckoned with and you can't casually f*ck with and humans are described as being in a situation where they die off too quick making the forces that are actually capable of killing them way too rare to actually make a dent. Meaning more soldats are dying than are being recruited. At this point in the novel humans schould have died out already because this war is not sustainable.

So either the Author suddenly pulls out something that fixes that or this sort of suspension of disbelief is going to ruin what is actually a quite interesting take on "war" in novel.

After all that complaining I have to give the novel it's good point

The characters are actually pretty good.

The MC might faint alot but he has a plan on what he's doing and his personality is not annoying at all.

The side characters aren't overstaying their welcome but rather appear in battle from time to time or when plot relevant.

Since there is no romance (god I hope it stays that way) none of the female characters feel like they are there to be part of some weird harem, you can actually enjoy them just existing as side characters. Whenever they are deep or interesting depends on who you ask but they're not ruining the narrative to deliver fanservice at inappropriate moments, that's for sure.

Could have spent 126 chapters on a worse story that's for sure but I'm still gonna pause this just to see and wait if it gets better or worse... <<less

It may seem like an ordinary second chance novel, but it is not. The writing is very fluid and extremely relatable, the characters will be analysed in depth and it can already be seen from the first chapters that we will assist to the growth of various characters and also their maturity. I thank the translator for choosing to work on this novel and the author for writing it. I hope the novel won't disappoint me and I wish everyone the best enjoyment while reading! ^_^) <<less

God, I love Cho Euisin (MC) so much. He's like everybody's dependable older brother. If you have a problem, go to him and he will give you solid advice or give you extra courage. He will come save you if he knew that you're in a situation where you need help. He's not like those OP MC's who doesn't give a sh*t about anyone anymore just because they became OP/famous (or become generally dimissive *cough*Sung Jinwoo*cough*). He actually wants everyone (those who deserve it) to become happy, even if they were just his acquaintances. He doesn't kill nilly-willy, but that doesn't mean that he's a softie either (he subjects his enemies to torture instead what a chad).

Maybe it's because he acknowledges, more than anyone, how important life is, as someone who previously died of cancer.

He has traumas and it doesn't get magically solved in one chapter, he actually works on it by facing it. I could talk about this man all day and this review box won't be enough for it, that's how much I love him.

Then, there's his classmates and allies. His classmates and other supporting characters actually have character developments on their own.

Even Hwang Jiho (the guy next to him in the cover; also the school's negligent Principal and a literal god) knows that he f*cked up and seeks to improve the school and his interpersonal relationships. That might've been because he was depressed and could not give a sh*t anymore (there were four tigers including him, one died and the other two were punished and so he became alone for centuries), but thanks to Euisin fixing things, he now has many things to care and protect and he's doing so rather vigorously (he's going to be the first one to choke Euisin out of his self-sacrificing tendencies lmao)

They all have their own circumstances they're struggling with and maybe due to that, they're very understanding and empathetic.

The villains are either A. Really bad guys that needs to be smited from the face of the earth or B. Became bad guys because circumstances made them so (which you could sympathize with).

Overall, this novel is easily a 5/5, the translations could be improved (PLEASE IMPROVE EVEN AN EDITOR WOULD BE NICE PLEASE I'LL GIVE KO-FI FOR THE LOVE OF GOD; how to apply as an editor because I totally could shelve a few hours in my busy day for the sake of editing this masterpiece) and well, I tried to mtl this once and it was 50x more awful than the translations. Even understanding one sentence was a struggle. <<less

You really just don't know how much badassery this series has. Instead of the usual Wuxia bs of celestial techniques that ultimately don't mean anything, the wars in this series remind of the reading the Iliad including the epic poems. You don't have the usual bs about the moral quandary of first kill and angst of all the bs typical in young MC stories. Instead we have a MC who is a literal human weapon and embraces the slaughter inherent in war. It also helps that the foes he kills deserve it so you are rooting for him to lay waste.... more>>

Exquisite build up before each battles lends to gravity to each battle and then graphic details of weapon impacts on specific body parts perfectly illustrate the brutality of war with cold weapons. Best military webnovel for sure. <<less

The beginning might be hard to get through but it gets better in later chapters.

So-- the issues that I had with this is how the MC gets transported into tbe story. It just felt a bit forced. And too plot convinent.

He ends up falling into a bridge and drowning. I don’t have an issue with way he died.

My problem lies with the fact that the pulled the “it called out to me“ card. If they wanted him to accidentally fall and not be suicidal then they could’ve made him drunk since he did go out to eat with his ex-superiors.

Maybe cuss them out while he’s walking aimlessly near the bridge and make him trip and fall off.

Idk-- just not the “oh it called out to me.“ it isn’t a big deal but it just peeved me.

The next issue I had is with Behemoth. Serves no point. Is only there to be a mentor.

If you want a better cat mentor character who actually serves a point to the plot. Then go check out Eleceed.

Behemoth is literally POINTLESS--

The only point of him being there is to be that one tutorial guide npc.

He serves no point to the plot. He’s only there so that the MC doesn’t need to interact with other characters to get information.

Other than the times the MC asks him for info he’s almost forgettable. Only popping up to talk about his wine addiction.

Also from the early chapters when the MC asks if all cats are like him he says he’s one of a kind. But in the later chapters the MC just reveals that he’s 100 years old cat and no one bats an eye??? They just treat it like it’s normal.

PLUS behemoth has a useful ability but the MC doesn’t even bother to utilize it.

The third issue I have is with the MC. I can understand not wanting to get mixed up with the protagonist since he wants a peaceful life.

HOWEVER! The way the MC goes about things just pissed me off. The MC is 30 smth years old. But that fact is almost forgotten because he acts like a child.

“Try to escape —> realize it doesn’t work —> go back”

He repeated that cycle multiple times. He acts too much like a kid for a 30 year old man.

The first time he did that when he skipped school and had a drinking spree for a week.

So that he could get kicked out of school and not enlist in the military. Then his dad tells him that he’s gonna to freeze the mc’s bank account and enlist him early if he doesn’t get his grades up.

So he kinda flunks the swordsmanship class but aces the magic class. His dad didn’t even ask him to make it to top 10 btw— the MC just put that on himself. He did so well that his teacher said that he would be an 8-circle mage. Which contradicts the MC saying he doesn’t want to stand out.

The second time he repeats this cycle is when he’s waiting in the hallway with the protagonist.

The MC finds out that “Leo” was actually Arthur, the protagonist. He tries to use his editor’s authority skill to make it so that him and Arthur never met.

It doesn’t work the first time but he still tries anyway. Using up all of the times he could use the ability. Which is pretty s*upid.

Clearly the reason the author rejected the first one was because they wanted the MC to interact with Arthur. But he still tries it TWICE— even though he could only use the ability three times per chapter.

I also hated how he immediately avoids the protagonist the moment he found out his identity. Like seriously? Way to make yourself suspicious. Be neutral so that he doesn’t get interested/curious. Talk to him enough while distancing yourself since you guys didn’t talk in school before in the first place.

The third time is when he goes off and runs away. Only to get caught and get detained because he injured a knight. It was a half-assed attempt in the first place. It wasn’t thought out well enough. Did he forget who his dad is? His dad is filthy rich he could easily hire people to track him down.

And the most frustrating part is that we find out that all his efforts to drop out in attempts to not enlist is POINTLESS because he could've just been at the top of the magic course whatever you call it so that he could be exempt.

The only times I even remember that he’s 30 years old is when a character says “Sometimes you talk like an old man”

Maybe it works better in korean but it doesn’t work that well in english.

I don’t like the fact that characters constantly point it out. Because it feels like a cheap way to remind us that hey! The MC is a 30 year old man trap in a kids body.

The characters aren’t that fleshed out. We just kinda get a dumped information about them which is fine I guess.

We’re only 100 chapters in so they’ll probably get fleshed out in later chapters.

It gets better in the later chapters since there are characters that are pretty interesting.

For example, Melchior and Arthur’s dead mom— We only hear about her through Arthur though.

I also began to like Arthur’s character a lot. I liked his backstory and his personality in general. He’s pretty cute at times but I also like when he gets serious.

I’m p into the drama between the 3 princes. So look forward to that.

Also still curious about the “accident” that the MC keeps mentioning that involved Melchior. Idk if it was revealed already and I just missed it or if it’ll be revealed later on. <<less

As someone has summed up already, it's got a lot of tropes you might see in CN novels as well as KR staples like necromancy. You will see MC subverting the very low expectations of the people who knew of his body's previous exploits, fixing family feuds, getting misunderstood, and being OP. As well as using a shovel and a gun.

NOTE: the MC is a 'holy necromancer' and his abilities all have been blessed and have divine attributes or something, so it's not the implied 'gotta hide my necromancy abilities or I'll get my head cut off' that I was expecting when I read it. He doesn't really use it that often, either :/

This part deserves at least three stars, just because the execution's pretty entertaining. The reason why it's not much higher than that is due to a few things:

The MC's rudeness. While it is interesting to see the MC cuss during serious moments, when he's supposed to be 'holy' and all, if he's cussing every other sentence it becomes rather tiring.

The relative shallowness of the novel. Characters seem to let go of previous impressions and deep grudges a bit too easily, and antagonists have relatively easy-to-see through plans. Legit undead are the 'pure evil', no real nuances in these antagonists' characters can be found. I was expecting something a bit deeper from a book with Mature and Mystery genres. <<less

He is strong but not overpowered, there are other people in the world that can beat his a**. The main character also isn't a reactionary protagonist, he has goals and motivations and will actively work toward them, with things not just falling into his lap. He also seemingly doesn't have a fat stack of plot armor on his back, like, he gets into dangerous situations but you can still feel tension because it doesn't break you're suspension of disbelief when he survives. To be honest this is just my impression from the first 16 chapters and it could totally change later on in story. Having said that I feel like the story is worth a read through because the author is very good, and the translation quality is great as well. I think this story is something a majority of readers will enjoy if they read through the first 5-10ish chapters. <<less

Deculain. He is a known early genius who lost his light. He was a person who takes the fruit of other's works, that is one of the reasons he is hated. As Kim Woojin takes possession of his body, he is a bit restrained, creating a misunderstood gap moe.

Jeriel. She is Deculain's sister, but later on, it was revealed that she is not a real Yukrain, which is their family. But, Deculain gives up the position of the head to her later on.

Yuli. She is Deculain's fiancé who works as a knight who at the same time hates his guts. She started developing feelings of genuine positivity but got ultimately destroyed for some cause. They have some agreement as Deculain knows that they will get married if they continue being engaged, so they made a goal to break that mutually. She is the only one treated as a legal love interest so far.

Ephrin. She is the daughter of the former assistant of Deculain, who committed su*cide. She assumes that the reason her father committed su*cide was because of Deculain, who was working on a study with him. She makes a personal goal of taking revenge to Deculain by revealing that Deculain's research was her father's idea and work, but later on they get along because Deculain submitted the paper on her father's name as an author. She then becomes Deculain's student. She is not officially a love interest, but it is undeniable that it is completely possible.

Sylvia. A girl from a noble family whose father, the head of the family, hates Deculain because he killed his wife and Sylvia's mother. She is a talented wizard who wishes to be taught by Deculain, but her father and Deculain are opposed to it. She then becomes rogue and on hiding. She develops a deep love-hate feeling to Deculain.

Sophieen. She was crowned as emperor as her father died of natural causes. She treats Deculain as a teacher due to their relationship that developed through chess, because of Deculain being with her in solving her problems and regression.

Yuara. She is Kim Woojin's ex-girlfriend who is also his co-worker. She was revealed to have also transmigrated/reincarnated to the game world as a female player. She is currently in her teens in the story, Deculain being 33, giving them an awkward age gap. She is also revealed to be an exact figure of Deculain's late fiance, because she is designed to her. She is also very possible to be a love interest.

The story is a top notch story utilizing the misunderstandings. A typical Jee Gab Song scheme, like The Novel's Extra. The MC is, well the MC. He thinks logically, not some kind of maniac, but because Deculain's attitude is dominant, he can't express his feelings raw or in an honest manner. The other characters also have good mental states, not some psychopaths (aside from Yuli's sister cause she is) who changes feelings every chapter, aside from being quick to accept the MC's changes. The world building is good, with typical aristocratic and medieval cliché. The other countries wasn't elaborated much since the whole plot revolved between the academy, imperial palace, and others within the place.

Basically the plot is good for your palate if you like The Novel's Extra (aside from the ending cause it s**ked, Rachel best girl). It is also good if you like My Death Flags Show No Sign of Ending because the two MCs of the works are the same unintentional tsunderes. <<less

Some people may complain that the money-making part is dragged or MC is bland but imo it was very refreshing. The financial "business tycoon" arc was what made us comprehend the world of MC, his actions and ambitions and also muse over our own reality since the Asian crisis event was a real historical event. The financial part was the most interesting part in the novel and exactly what made it unique and shine among all other similar dungeon/post-apocalyptic novels. As for the MC, he is a calm, intelligent, ambitious person who knows how to take advantage of his knowledge of the future. Of course, for some immature teens he may seem bland because he doesn't have that s*upid righteousness to the point of absurd and hot-blooded temper that we usually see in the typical shonen novels. No, he doesn't suffer from the hero syndrome, he is just trying to achieve his goals step by step, being ruthless and merciful when needs to be. Somehow his temper seemed very similar to Yagami Light from Death Note minus he is not that reckless and doesn't suffer from God complex (at least so far). Side characters are developed quite well too, they play a vital role in the world-building and help to showcase MC's character through interactions and dialogues with him. Overall this novel is the most well-thought and closest to the reality novel I've read so far. I'm applauding to the author. Btw in Korea this novel is quite popular maybe not as much as Solo Leveling, Gamer, Dice or God Tower but still a very good response from the audience. Following that, if you don't find slow paced novels which delves into the psychology of characters interesting you won't enjoy this. It's fundamentally the same as if you don't enjoy the premise of BL you won't enjoy the story about it. Would BL readers take the opinion of someone who hates the genre's opinion into account? I guess the review would ward off someone looking for thrills, but why they would think of reading this in the first place is a mystery.

I also hate how they mentioned SCOG. Its take on second chance is so damn terrible I can't express how much I dislike it. 5 stars to the author, 1 for the plot and MC. LOA does it much better - characters aren't one dimensional, girls aren't stuck in for the sake of building the MC's harem, MC has a freaking personality and acts his god damn AGE, and no sign of Japanese beta-ass ret*rd MC here.

As for their review of the MC - He is nowhere close to being a simple 'nice guy' - and even further from a self insert. The MC is cool headed, relatable, mature, one track minded, kind, and just so REALISTIC I would like to offer my soul to the author. I have a chant for my favourite MCs which make me forgive bastard cheater/harem collectors. Here it is: JO Minjoon! JUNG Sunwoo! HAN Maru! SHIN KyungHyun! THESE MCs are just so damn precious and cool and... you get the gist.

The first 25 chapters is full of contents of how powerful and rich his family is (I can't count how many times I thought of how unfair the world is, lol)

It's not a bad thing though, he's taking advantage about it like buying expensive materials for his accelerated growth. Quite refreshing from the usual trend (Poor to rich) where the protagonist relies on their will power and luck.

I'm not really sure if this will turn into a harem (I hope not). I'm 25 chaps in and there is 3 potential love interests.

SUMMARYA fairly entertaining read incorporating the recently popular superhero + isekai themes.But plot gets unnecessarily convoluted with poorly structured cliche tropes, filler chapters and nonsensical conversations.The concept of being an author is pointless, MC is bland and boring.Devolves into korean makjang drama.Translation quality is pretty good though. Kudos on the effort at least.I don't get why the novel is rated so highly, probably because of the superhero-tag (influence from Boku no Hero?). I'd ask reviewers to raise the bar and hold a higher standard.PREMISEA failed author is inserted into his own web novel of a post-apocalyptic superhero society as a minor side character. MC is armed with some foreknowledge, and the ability to edit his character/items. Eventually he gains prominence in the new world, becoming the true protagonist while supposedly trying to survive/find a way out.CHARACTERSMC is a typical 28-yr old loser, who has a second chance to personally experience his own failed novel. No personality, no humor or passion that might endear him to readers. MC is trying to survive while he thinks he's "hiding his strength" and is light-bendingly dense.The side characters are more developed with interesting backstories, personalities, powers. Typical shounen-ish characters ~17-yrs old (novel MC/antagonist/multiple love interest/love triangle). The age gap is a little weird, but I'll refrain from commenting on these things.ISSUES(1) The meta-reference of web novels was actually interesting...MC has to confront the reality of a world that he created, except it's more detailed than he ever imagined and so starts to learn where his own writing went wrong. It's a fascinating idea, IF, as an author, he learns how his story could be improved and grows from that knowledge (like the anime Re:Creators).Unfortunately that concept is never pursued beyond the first few chapters. MC just becomes an awkward robot-like existence in his own novel. So it's supposed to be a story about redemption, without the redemption??The only point of being an author is to edit his own character/items and some knowledge of the future.The MC has ZERO CHARACTER GROWTH besides powering up. He was even lazy enough to edit his character desc to be more hardworking so he could push through his workouts?! WTF.You could substitute for any random non-author MC and there would be no difference.(2) It's called "The Novel's Extra".It'd be interesting if we had multiple perspectives since the whole point is immersion into an author's novel. Instead it's focused entirely on MC who becomes the uncontested star of the show. Side characters' personal thoughts are a litany of exposition, and they inevitably and annoyingly lead back to the MC along the lines of "Why is the MC so cool/mysterious/powerful?". Compare that to "Overlord" where side characters story lines slowly merge with Ainz, or "Top Management" where side characters brief/mild interactions with Jung Sunwoo hint at their thoughts and personal motivations.This makes the side characters bland and boring as they bounce off the robot-like MC in cringe-worthy one-sided interactions, while MC is constantly dense. Which is ridiculous since MC was their creator who should understand them best. Again, being an author is POINTLESS.The MC doesn't make a real attempt to befriend anyone, he just wants to advance the story while being a "nice guy" and survive. Nameless non-critical characters are ignored even if they are in mortal danger (i.e. he doesn't really care if regular humans are killed).Author (real one) explains MC's aloofness as avoiding attachment to the characters so he won't be emotionally hurt if/when he leaves. Which makes NO SENSE because it's also repeatedly mentioned MC feels pride and joy as their creator. He's ALREADY EMOTIONALLY INVESTED.What's the point of being a robot?(3) The heart of the issue is anthropomorphication.Does MC regard everyone as real living beings or not? He struggles with killing humans, but yet sees everyone as a fictional character and thus has no emotional connection. Great story, totally classic and refined, going back to the roots were every story was creative although not original, and don't get me wrong too much originally actually destroy the story (the author with wild ideas will eventually ran out of ideas in the middle of the novel and turn it to a Harem story). The memorable thing about this novel for me after the passage of time is the MC’s callous behavior. There haven’t been many LNs and their anime adaptations that describe brutality and disregard for life at the forefront like this, which evokes the images of Light Yagami from Death Note. The main character himself is a dichotomy, two personalities that seemingly opposing to each other. On the surface, he plays a coldly calculating and dispassionate immortal being that sees everything else as inferior. Yet on the inside, he still remembers his original human personality and his lack of confidence, especially when dealing with his followers who obey him zealously. His experiences with his subordinates who are overpowered creatures in their own right reminds me of the humorous scene in “Monty Python’s Life of Brian”, where the protagonist yells at the crowd in exasperation at their blind faith in him, only for them to repeat his words as gospel.

When we read about his fortress-like sanctuary and his numerous and unique minions, it’s like a chuuni dream come true. Remember, the times when you scribble and sketch about yourself being the president of the universe, having your secret base where friends/subordinates with superpowers hang out and an arsenal of ultimate weapons...

The difference is in the writing, which is written in a solemn style that depicts action, violence and black humor. Minor characters die horribly, casually killed by beings that deemed them as annoying little bugs. The MC’s subordinates can barely conceal their disgust and disdain for ordinary humans, putting their master in an awkward spot. But then again, the MC himself treats the inhabitants of his new world with as much interest as a kid with an ant-farm.

The main draw of the series is seeing how an overpowered, deity-like being and his cohort of followers crush all those in their way. Renowned warriors, mages, assassins, the theocracy and the royalty, all their scheming and struggles are petty and pointless because they couldn’t comprehend the sheer magnitude in the difference of power.

It is very well written, though the author can veer off the path considerably for padding material. For those who want to read more after watching the anime, you can continue from volume 4. However, I strongly suggest reading from the start as the novel version had a lot of internal monologue and descriptions that adds to the characterization which were glossed over in the anime. <<less

It got to the point where I had to dabble in the dark arts of MTL to know how the story would proceed.

The plot is surprisingly well done, our MC here is a self proclaimed NEET (male) that got transmigrated into the body of the fake saint Elrise (female) a minor villain of a gal game. She strives for the "ideal ending" as usual in this kind of story but as the plot progresses we are made to realize that things are not as simple as they seem.

This is fundamentally a misunderstanding comedy but it's different from the likes of "Overlord" or "To be a Power in the Shadows" for example because the MC here is counsciously deceiving other people most of the time, she is an extremely selfcentered person, a sociopath if you want and I'm a sucker for this kind of characters when they are done well and Elrise is pulled off reasonably well.

This isn't a masterpiece by any means but for a webnovel, especially one of this genre, this is far ahead of anything similar I've come across, the novel is also translated pretty well and, if you want to MTL that's also readable.

I can only suggest you pretend the tags don't exist (especially the "romantic subplot" ones, as they are a stretch) and give it a shot. <<less

Except every character in the story loves him unconditionally and hes just being "oppressed" by unnamed background characters. Basically just means everything in this story is written to worship our self insert edge MC, events exist to be solved perfectly by our MC, and the characters exist only to speak about how great our MC is for doing it. Why the supposedly harmless books from Lin Jie's bookstore become ridiculously overpowered instruments in the hand of others without his knowledge? Why they see different titles on the same book? Why Lin Jie's books could always answer his visitor's needs? Why Lin Jie could always avoid others' malicious tricks by doing next to nothing? Why all the fortunate coincidences always happen around Lin Jie? Who is Lin Jie, and who transported him to another world?

The answers are in the last dozens of chapters which perfectly rounded everything into one of the most satisfying ending I've seen. I could give you the spoiler, but it would definitely ruin your reading experiences. This is one of those mystery-themed stories that would be best read chapter-by-chapter. You should enjoy the comedic build-up ahead of the macabre ending of the mystery.

This book is recommended for people who are in love with mystery slice-of-life and antihero protagonists in magical fantasy setting, plus able to tolerate some gore and tragedy. Extremely not recommended for people who seek romances, fast pace stories, ideal protagonist, or perfect happy ending.

The Korean authors are the best when it comes to writing rebirth/revenge type series which are actually set in a functioning society. Of course, they have the tendencies towards gore and excessive nationalism, but this particular series seems to have been overlooked by these tendencies.

After you saw the summary, the first thing which should have sparked in your mind was: This is pretty cliche. Overpowered MC stays with moe girls. It is a SoL-Fantasy setting with occasional action arcs. Truth be told, this is that cliche. But this series beautifully portrays what happens when a cliche is actually done well.

For starters, while the MC is messed up by revenge and all, he is not naive. Definitely a plus point, but he is also single-dimensional. All that is in his mind is to save the world, to a point that he himself doesn't know why. Except, in this iteration, he creates that reason unwittingly by bringing together a family for himself. And his change of character is very satisfying to read. Not to mention, he has got his priorities straight.

The four moe girls are sufficiently unique from each other. More importantly, they all have unique backstories due to the past interactions, and the entire setting is one which reeks of wholesomeness while also allowing for actual villains and drama characters. There are hints that one of the girl could be attracted to the MC, but it is too soon to call. Overall, I don't expect a harem. And the kids are not moe just by being 'lil buns'. Rather, it is their personality and interactions which create the cute movements.

The antagonists are too soon to be judged. With dragons, there exist demons. It also looks like there is a long-term God tier antagonist who will make the MC repay for all the boons he usurped by reincarnating again and again. We also managed to get some support character (s) who have so far focused on the comedic elements in the positive side, and the tr*shy drama queen villains on the other side. The way in which the author is actually willing to use a global setting in terms of naming and such is making me anticipate what is to come.

With the short-term goals set, and a long-term goal backed by past memories steadily pursued, AND an ultra-long term goal which goes beyond his memories/comfort zone in the offing right now... This is a glorious start.

In conclusion, I have sufficiently enjoyed this laidback and relaxing read to Mango approve it so early on. However, if the standards drop within the next 50 chapters or so, then I will be updating this review with my recommendation. <<less
