even though my ship ZC and DQ didn't sail, but the end was satisfying
This is probably my favorite novel that I will never re-read again. Like everyone has stated, this novel is very beautiful not just because of its writing style but also because of the life it gives to each of the characters.
I've read a lot of historical novels but this is one of the few that depict the rise and fall of ministers and generals, the reign of a king from beginning to end. The novel is suspenseful because it's unpredictable so there were times when I had to stop reading because I couldn't stomach what could happen next.
In my opinion, the ML did love the FL. While you're reading there's bits of pieces you pick up and eventually arrive to that conclusion. Especially in the end,
After the FL finds out of the ML's true personality and his wicked actions, she believes he was never sincere in his love towards her. She thinks to herself while she was reminiscing and holding the memory of them first meeting, the ML long forgot about the day they met and their memories together. However, at the end before the ML dies, he does remember the day they met. In his eyes, the scene is described so accurately that the reader (at least to me) comes to conclude that the ML did love her. Moreover, as he's laying on the floor he points at the flowers that the FL liked (he can't talk due to his ailment) but his eunuch misunderstands him and orders the guards to cut the flowers. He shakes his head at this because they misunderstood him. I believe he probably wanted to be brought close to the flowers? Idk.
I enjoyed the ending, it was satisfying although I wished there was an epilogue just to tie up loose ends. Overall, I definitely recommend this novel! Thanks the translator who made it possible to read this gem!
This novel is the epitome of the word angst. It takes you on a roller coaster ride, full of angst, deceit, and betrayal. The protagonists is blinded by her savior’s deceitful mask, she ends up with this unrequited love and affection to protect him and help him with his goal just to be by his side, even if it will cost her, her own life. She knows that he is way to good to be with her but as long as she is by his side that’s all she can wish for, on a chapter when praying to the Buddha she didn’t ask to be with him but only asked “for him to be happy.” This unrequited love that she yearns for will show her many devastation’s.
The ML is a sociopath like literally a sociopath, a very beautiful, handsome sociopath. Whom for his goals will not stop until he can have everything under his control. Not caring for nothing or anyone that stands in his way. His schemes are ruthless, but to show the people of His country that he is a benevolent king he controls himself and approaches in different ways. I will say his upbringing caused him to be a sociopath where he doesn’t understand the feelings of love. In my opinion he did ended up loving the protagonists but he himself didn’t know. Because he himself didn’t get that love. But then again it’s hard to say. If you read this you will also have your own opinion. He never gave the protagonists presents or jewelry or clothes nor make up. Her “sister” (you will know whom I’m talking about, if you read this novel.) is the one who gives her these things and give her a make over. Anyway I highly recommend this novel because the plot was well made. Kudos to the author and translator.
This version the MC didnt die and schemed her way till the end, the old version the MC did truly die. Ive read from someone who gave review to this novel so I want to read that one.
