Court intrigue is one of the many common settings of novels translated. Usually centered around female protagonists and Power Couples, its something very distinct, and yet so similar to the common Xuanhuan novel.

To be a Virtuous Wife circumvents this in a simple, if unorthodox way. Instead of focusing on the politics, the novel focuses on Qu Qing Ju's everyday life, and within that, the relationship she was married into. Similar novels that come to mind are A Mistaken Marriage Match: Record of Washed Grievances and A Mistaken Marriage Match: A... more>> Generation of Military Counselor. While both of these step away from the court intrigue style, and lay closer to the mystery genre, To Be a Virtuous Wife is much more similar in tone to these than the more Soap Opera-esque political drama novels, a la Chu Wang Fei.

The series reads a lot like a slice of life, but the main difference is definitely evident in the tone. To Be a Virtuous Wife (hence TBaVW) has a more serious tone then something like Death March, although the usage of power is more similar to the latter than the aforementioned novels. Although the setting lends itself to mystery and drama very well, TBaVW strays away from both of these, and focuses on Qu Qing Ju and her relationship with He Heng, rather than the myriad of external complications it could focus on.

Worldbuilding:

The world of TBaVW is nothing surprising, but well done nonetheless. The beginning group of princes is unorthodox, as is the lack of a crown prince. Something of special note is the more active role the emperor plays in this novel over others. Many times, the emperor exists more as a plot device than anything else, or is so simple that he could be considered one. TBaVW really humanizes the emperor, which breathes a lot of life into the setting.

Characters:

TBaVW, as romance tends to do, lives off the development of the characters. Fortunately, the characters are written very well. Antagonists don't boil down to simple-minded fools or overly arrogant "young master" types. The array of characters is broad, and each character feels distinct from the others, though so many occupy similar niches. Our main pairing is given enough depth to feel human, and their relationship isn't single-faceted, based purely on beauty or s*x. As a result, the relationship, while not feeling entirely natural (more ethereal than anything else) doesn't feel forced or fake.

Story Development:

The plot of TBaVW is a bit episodic, as it doesn't focus on a hero's journey. However, its distinctly separated from a slice of life by its focus on time and that things change over time. Whether it focuses on the fading of beauty over time or the fading of love or life, TBaVW greatly emphasizes the time throughout its snapshots of Qu Qing Ju's life. Within this timeframe, however, the series focuses on day-to-day life. There isn't constant parties one must attend, in which poison or drugs are thrown about like water. Neither is there an overwhelming sense of corruption within the greater government we see: although there is a system of nobility, it focuses more on propriety than legality, even within court sessions. One thing worth criticizing is the use and reuse of female characters throwing themselves at He Heng. This trope was one of the few carried over from other political intrigue novels, and it becomes a bit repetitive, though still enjoyable. That being said, TBaVW still has a sense of class within this trope: people look for tricks to attract his attention, rather than the drugs or competitions many novels like to favor.

Enjoyment:

TBaVW is marvelous in both its enjoyment with reading and its re-readability. Unlike Xuanhuan novels, which have oodles of pseudo-filler inbetween each readable moment of enjoyment, the entirety to TBaVW is re-readable in some fashion or another, and enjoyable on first reads as well. It really stands out as a fun novel to read even among novels of higher literary quality. A large part of this novel's enjoyability is also do to its incredible translation. The translation includes reference images as well as explanations of objects within the time period, which boosted my enjoyment of it quite a bit.

I heavily recommend To Be A Virtuous Wife to anybody. Even for people not usually into romance or political intrigue novels, To Be a Virtuous Wife has a charm to its main relationship dynamic that sets it apart from the usual novel of those genres, and for that I greatly recommend you read it. <<less

Its a slice of life story about womens lifes in an ancient china family

It deals with the struggles of being one in many where the husband may not like you, your family only wants to use you and your servants may not respect you.... Untill you step up your game and take charge

Or that what the MC did when she lived her life

To Be A Virtuous Wife didn't jive well with me since I overlooked the slice-of-life tag. It truly is a slice-of-life.

The MC doesn't particularly have ambitions. She just wants to live a good life. Nor is she particularly romantic, though she plays the part of a wife well. The political plots are simple and obvious, unlike some of the convoluted, layered schemes in other historical novels. The girls that scheme against the MC are also too obvious and unintelligent, so they get thwarted easily, and the issues are resolved promptly.... more>> We see the enemies crushed simply because they're being dumb and impudent.

All in all, I thought it was an OK read, but I felt the plot was weak, and there was little character development past the part where the male lead gets infatuated with the MC. Thus, I found myself knowing how the story would end before reaching it and wondering if it would go anywhere. Well, I finished reading it and found myself feeling pretty... meh. <<less

This is my go to novel. Whenever I get tired of reading or something to pass in between long novels, this would be it. I've read this 5x.

I find the story realistic in a sense. The FL transmigrated, QQJ learned to adapt and it is understandable that she won't easily believe in ML and his sweet words. ML wont fall easily as well. Everything is a gradual process.

I don't mind he had a harem in the past but the moment QQJ appeared, he had none.

I like the way they... more>> develop and al the efforts Heng had put in.

Their journey, the struggles and how they share the same view of the sunset just like a poached egg.

Whenever I think about this novel, I would always remember the beginning " this is me seducing wangye" part <<less

Pretty ok read.

Had a hard time the first few chapter because of the translation. The translator decided to keep some words in their original language maybe to make the reading of an ancient chinese setting more immersive? But some were unnecessary such as xiandi, guifei, muhou... you can totally change those to something more colloquial in my opinion. The first chapters had too many footnotes but it gets better after the 3rd chapter and translator did a nice job overall.

Now story. Didn't enjoy the lack of description of the feelings... more>> between the MC and ML. Maybe it was on purpose that the author wanted to show their love with the trust, respect and how infatuated ML seemed each time he saw the MC. So you had to kinda guess the thoughts of both with their actions, reactions and what the author implied.

Also they talk with pretense and protocol so you have to read between lines too lol like "i fell for you after we married" means "i don't love you and I know you don't love me but I'm loyal and I just want to live a good life whether is with or without you" or something along those lines.

So not the type of writing I like but I appreciate the dynamic and it wasn't the spoon feeding type of reading so that's a nice change.

The plot is not complicated. You have the classic arrogant antogonists that are too unreasonable and hateful. Both MC and ML have intelligent servants that just adds to the easy plot. And all the problems come from other people's mistakes or scheming while the main couple keeps on winning.

It was interesting how the author showed the mentality of the imperial era and how bad it was for the woman there.

It wasn't a boring reading but I don't think I'll reread it <<less

I'm so sad.

Why did they have to write about them in old age and after passing.. That's the greatest conflict I have when reading. It's so hard to read about your two favorite characters dying now I'm writing this with wet eyes..

Anyways I really appreciate QQJ's personality and how she receives HH's affections. The act that she was stubborn when to came to believing the truth behind his words. After a while I did symphatise with HH's sincerity but we can't blame QQJ for being unable to read his mind... more>> like us who have a completely different POV. But at some point before QQJ knew it she had already fell though she still thought that she would be able to let go at any time.

I don't know what to say I really love they're story and don't be mad at the fact that she has an easy life cause that's what she earned. Her personality and temperament is the reason she was able to live so well and I personally don't think there's anything unfair about it (or perhaps I'm also being biased..?).

Anyways I really like this story so give it a try and don't let the bad reviews stop you from enjoying this piece.

I'm now going to let go of these characters and in the future when I recall them I'll really miss the days I spent reading this novel. <<less

It's a relaxing and enjoyable read for leisure. Although it gave me mixed feelings, whether the story should have been elongated or sometimes feeling that it was just right to stop there. Sigh.... so much confusion. It's a transmigration plot where a future person enters an ancient person's body.

Now, this main character is neither trying to forge a new path nor finding a new guy but adapting to the current situation that she is in. It's really refreshing to come across such a point of view. The author is really... more>> brave to be introducing the male lead who's in a polygamy relationship. Kudos to the effort and your brilliance (because it's the truth in ancient times; one man, many wife).

The pace of the story is not too fast or slow and just nice to keep up without feeling bored. The progress of their relationship is gradual, and you find yourself rooting for them, too. Lastly, they could improve on the use of language and punctuation. Thank you for your efforts, author and translator. <<less

Reading this, it doesn't feel like the MC is the MC but the ML. She's the window for readers to look into to her new world and how she accompanies the ML along the way. There are often a lot of conspiracies only left for ML to know, MC and the readers are left to speculate by themselves.

A type of realistic shuangwen/feels-good novel with little drama.
From the synopsis, I thought this would've been angsty but it was nothing but soothing and calming.
I love MC's rational mindset in her new circumstances. She adjusts well and keeps her head in the game, aside from the matters she's required to take care of, she won't worry much about anything else and simply enjoys life to the max.

One has to emphasize how important her viewpoint toward love is. She has no room for the struggle against someone like ML. He treated the original QQJ horribly, took one of her maids as his concubine, and let a higher-ranked concubine mess with her til the point she died and the MC transmigrated. You can argue it wasn't intentional, but it is what it is.

ML isn't a good person. He may love her but she knows that this love can change at any time.
She can only give back as much as he's willing to share. She can't afford to make herself miserable by falling head over into a pit. The society in which she now dwells won't free her from him even if he's one to grow tired of her. She can't just pack up and leave, she never had a choice but to settle with the marriage of the original QQJ.
She's lucky that ML and she hit it off well, and that he appreciates her good and bad.

There are enough of his concubines that set a good example of how they can have a sweet phase and once he saw something better, be ignored and turned away for good. If MC falls out of favor as a wife, she may keep her status but what's a lonely heart good for other than pain?
She's in love with him but she's fully capable of drawing clear lines if she needs to.
Negative comments on her lucid attitude towards ML make no sense :D

Side Note: Not too happy with the translations. Translators are purposefully leaving SIMPLE words in pinyin turning this more or less into a weird Chinglish with typos littered everywhere making things even harder than necessary for the reader. Words like daughter/son-/sister-/brother-/mother-/father-in-law, imperial/royal father/mother, uncle & aunt (maternal and paternal), official, official's madam, eunuch, maid, the capital, etc. Are all in pinyin that can be translated and sound definitely less weird than their pinyin counterparts. The point of translations is to translate. Unique terminologies and phrases aside, those weren't the issue.

This novel feels like a slice of life, historical style. That being said, yes, it does get boring at times but considering the number of chapters and the role the main character plays, that's probably to be expected.

Qu Qinju (MC)

She's a transmigrator who dealt in showbusiness in her past life. She's very pessimistic when it comes to romance and but is good to those who are good to her.

Cold. He's usually sweet to the main character but man is he scary once you think about it. How many women have been sacrificed for his love story? (Not saying that those women deserved a good ending but just imagining it is so sad. Women reallly didn't have it easy at the time.)

The concubines

I really couldnt find it in myself to hate any of them. Reading about them and knowing they probably wouldn't have a good ending made me feel like a stone was pressing onto my chest. Being a woman in a historical novel needs some sort of prize cause no way in hell can some of their endings be justified. The main characters are loved but what about the side characters? What about them?

Translation

I appreciate the translators work but leaving so many words untranslated made it so hard to get into the story. It does get easier in later chapters once you get used to the different titles but starting the story feels like a chore. Having to check the footnotes over 30 times in the first chapter is really....

Not gonna lie, this is kinda sad. She was with him since she was 16 and this is all the affection left for her and she's only 21.

It happens again... man this is why I hesitate in reading these historical novels. I understand there's a cultural difference and white skin is preferred over there but I get disappointed every single time.

I'm in love with this novel and very much in love with MC. I'm not sure why a lot of reviews are so low but from what I read it were mostly due to preferences. This story is not for people who wants face slapping or instant gratification. To me, this story is the most realistic out of all transmigration stories I've ever read. This story is my go to guide if I've ever got transmigrated to old times.

Let me address the complaints stated by other reviewers:

1. The translation. I... more>> like this kind of translation. I've learned a lot of new Chinese word from this story. A lot of the words that have been kept have very complicated meaning and hard to be translated into English. It also help in keeping the overall mood of the story since it is very intricated with ancient Chinese culture. I don't know why a lot of people complaining about the translation when the translator gave both short and detailed notes/glossary. I like learning something new through reading. It is a bit tedious but it helps in understanding the story in terms of context and social notion of the time. For example, the title of concubine is determined by their rank (Cefei/Qieshi/Tongfang). This ranking system is hard to be translated and easier to be understood if we kept the phrase. Plus, the terms that were used are all historically accurate.

2. Cold MC. To me, Qing Ju is very mature amd realistic upon her situation. I know some of you guys want an MC who would face slap other concubines and dominates her husband. However, you need to be aware of the social structures of the time. It was common for guys to have concubines especially for the royals. He Heng is definitely a normal ancient chinese man who does not believe in poligamy. Plus, he's a future emperor who will have tons of women is his harem. There's no point in eliminating all females especially not for a guy who doesn't believe in having only one wife. She could even be label as jealous which could be used as a reson for divorce during that time. She doesn't show her heart easily. She is a woman who takes very good care of herself. No point in being virtous if you yourself are suffering for it. It is a bit unreasonable to call her cold. She may not love passionately but her love is steady like a slow flowing river.

3. Bland MC. Really? Yeah, she doesn't do much cuz that what women of that time do. She did what she could within the limit she have. She managed her household, control the harem, curry favor, takes care of her husband just like any other women of that time do. Just because she is a modern woman doesn't mean that she would know a lot about modern stuff. How many of you women knows about modern invention to the point of able to create those inventions? Tax system? Judiciary? Modern finance? Modern health system? Pharmacy? Administration? Qing Ju is just a normal girl with modern prespective over life. She believe in woman rights but she's not a position where she can just pick up a sword, ride horses and fight for woman right. That's unrealistic. She believe in monogamous marriage but she's powerless against the society so she try to treat her husband's concubines nicely since she knows it is not their own choice. If you want those MC who are strong, outspoken, high-achiever, all that jig, this is just not the story for you. Don't complain and just move on. <<less

Soo, I'm probably not going to continue the story. These types of stories just aren't suited for me haha. I wanted a face-slapping story but also have some humour or feel good parts like a rootable protagonist or ML that you root for against all the villains. However, here, I find every character in the story is just a bit*h even the MC, scheming, sneers at everyone, constantly thinks bad of everyone. No one is likeable at all except maybe the 4th prince, who barely had a couple of... more>> appearances until now. Everyone else is thinking badly of other people and it's just such a cesspool of pure negativity.

Writing/Translation

The translation is super good. You can tell that the translator really loved the story and put a lot of care and effort into writing it. There are many footnotes and pictures littered throughout.

Plot

Up to here, it's just the MC living her life and encountering all these banquets and events where she will always be on top in the end. However, there are some plot holes or things that don't make sense as smoothly as the MC. She just transmigrated here but she can pick up all the ancient Chinese culture so quickly that she can decisively order a bunch of servants to be beaten up in front of her. There is no error in the actions to live in such a place.

What Story Tried to Achieve

This is just a pure, face-slapping Chinese palace drama story up to here. The romance with the guy feels like insta-love and the MC is being cautious at the moment but still pretending to be a good wife. Well, the face slapping is definitely delivered on all accounts. The chinese palace drama is also very much delivered, the back talk and hidden actions are at least not purely straightforward. There are plots and stuff happening everywhere that are interesting. The romance, I haven't really reached it yet in that I'm not sure what exactly the main couple really thinks of each other.

The title meaning feels like irony, everyone pretends to be or wants a virtuous wife but hah! Every single female is the complete opposite of one and every male feels entitled to one.

Pacing

I think it's good so far. Isn't rushed or slow, especially with all the double backhanded twisty talk happening everywhere. This was the only thing that kept me reading.

Characters

I dislike everyone. Everyone looks down on everyone and wants to climb over other people to get higher. The ML is a typical ML. The MC has no compassion and just does what she wants. But, I do like that she has decisiveness in her and that she actually handles things well and is smart and able to beat other people herself. All the other characters have the same attitude. There are no good relationships here except between the mother and child but when the characters themselves aren't likeable, I don't care about the relationship. And even if there are likeable characters, they appear so infrequently that it's like there's no point to give me good feelings. So overall, this story isn't enjoyable for me.

This novel was okay. It was not bad but it's not excellent either so it was pretty average for me.

To be honest, I don't really like the story but it's just a personal opinion of mine so I have nothing to say about that.

The translations though, it was pretty bad. The first few chapters were terrible but I keep reading and it improved so props to the translators for that. But, I was pretty pissed that the translators decided to kept many chinese words that could be translated to english... more>> pretty well and didn't lose the original meaning. And not to mention the footnotes, I just can't understand why they don't put it just below each paragraphs to make it easier to read. So, yeah. The story was a bit meh for me but I could see why it's high in most people's list. <<less

This is one of my favorite web novels so far! If you could get pass all the pinyin/chinese terms then this novel will bring you lots of endearing moments, life lessons, along with character growth.

My number one reason to read this novel is:

- if you want to learn how to seduce a man and make him fall head over heels in love with you.

Qu Qing Ju pretty much nail down the role of seductress and how to do it in a graceful and dignified way leaving all love rivals in... more>> jealousy, envy, hopelessness, and awe.

Her guidebook is simple: be yourself, put yourself first, look your best, communicating what you want, have a good attitude, be sweet and charming, flirtatious, cunning, mysterious, make him earn your trust and love, etc...

How she implement all these element to make He Heng respect, pamper and fall in love with her is brillant and requires multiple re-reading to master all those techniques.

If you have been in multiple relationships in the past, this novel will give you a glimpse into the different types of man-woman relationships and reasons why a man would prefer one woman instead of another. Of course, all of us wants to be Qu Qing Ju. So start taking notes from the beginning. <<less

The story is good so far, would love to keep going, but I can't maintain focus. The Chinese words to describe the relationships are too confusing so that I find myself lost half the time. I have read Cnovels before and none of them have confused me as much as this one. Maybe I am not quite there yet with the Chinese so in fairness I will give this a four. As good as a novel is, it is not great if it becomes a headache to decipher.

Honestly, this is an extremely boring novel to read. Both the "political" plot and the main couple are developed very lightly. The MC is just a shrewd woman who wins arguments against a bunch of characters just as boring. Initially, I thought that the main focus of the novel would be ML's ambitions, but he didn't make any notable moves and in the end everything was delivered to him on a golden plate; easily. Boring!

I read this novel way earlier but realize I havent rated it when it is one of my fav.

I read this when I was sucker for historical, ancient setting with harem schemes and political struggles, and this doesn't disappoint at all. This novel has all the elements in mild form as it shows things more from MC perspective who isnt heavily politically inclined.

Our MC who gets transmigrated into timid wangfei adapts herself into the setting pretty seamlessly. She is very realistic and practical does what she wants and wants to... more>> enjoy life to the fullest while being lazy.

She doesnt whine how the ML has concubines and has mentality of ancient man but accepts it and the fact that he won't truely love her or his love will be everlasting. She doesnt fully believe in the ML but accept the fact that for her to be in power she needs to win over her husband and does things to gain his attention. He finds her very intriguing and mysterious and slowly falls for her.

She is very respectable, isnt overpowering does her duties as the head of harem very well. She, coming from modern life understands the women of this setting and sympathizes with them and does everything she can to accommodate their needs. But she isn't a pushover. She isn't goody two shoes or an innocent person who lets people mess her. She clap back as well.

The ML initially has the characteristics of those men in that period :arrogant doesnt think too much of his concubine but after some point your perspective will change as he show character development and realize he is devoted to our MC and the nation.
Both MC and ML are very level headed person. They are smart, realistic and dignified royalties.

It never clarifies if the MC truely loves the ML or not. As story progresses we can see how much the ML loves her and he himself believes he loves him more than she does. That doesnt mean she is cold to ML it's just that she doesnt express it verbally but she is always there when ML needs her. She isn't very emotional person who profuses love everytime she is more of action speaks louder and in the epilogue it hints that the MC also loves him very much but wont say that and will take it to her grave and let it remain as a mystery which in turn makes you feel for the ml.

But you can see from side character's perspective that the love between them will be seen as an example of so called legendary love in that era.

I had fun reading new words in this novel props to the translator for not changing wangfei into princess consort and such. It just add to the historical setting and makes it more authentic. There are quotes in the novel which are very heartwarming.

Overall this novel is very interesting and easy peaceful read describing everyday life of our MC who is wife of emperor candiate to be. She isnt the op knowing it all MC but someone who is very regular, talented person who take what life gives and makes it worthy.

Give the novel some time to grow into you and this novel will give the joy of reading. Thats what I felt when I read this novel. Highly recommended. <<less

Ngl I avoided this novel many times because of the summary, (actually I'm not sure how I even started reading it lol) it's different from what the summary implies. While there is drama, schemes and problems, that's part of an ancient China novel honestly. It's nice novel, easy to read and enjoyable. The characters aren't one dimensional villans or anything like that. I love how the characters change and grow over time. Full marks for story, "You tried" award for the translation, I really wish we could have separate ratings for them. The person has a good grasp of chinese, but OMG do they have a boner for trying to force chinese terms down the readers troath, they left a completely unreasonable amount of original language words that have perfectly good direct translations, unless they are trying to make material for chinese class.

I really really want to read this but the chinese terms are impeding me to understand what I'm reading. Yes it is understandable that the translator may want to present the different hierarchies in its original form but it only makes the reading unpleasant.

This novel has been heavily recommended to me, but fearing that it could not live up to its fame, I put off reading it. Overall, I am not disappointed, but it is not as outstanding as I expected it to be. Don't get me wrong, it is a really good novel, but it's hard for me to give it full marks. I like it very much, but I do not love it.

First, let's start with the good points. I enjoy both MC and ML, and they do make a great... more>> pairing. Yet, I wish we could get to know more about their personalities and feelings, which are, in my opinion, not extensively described.

The MC transmigrated into this world, but we do not get to learn about the circumstances of her transmigration, nor much about her previous life. She is calm, clear-headed and confident, but, at the same time, she is also detached, which made it harder for me to completely relate to her. The same is kinda true for the ML. There aren't many chapters that are written in the pov of the ML, but at least his feelings (when talking about the MC) are made abundantly clear. I know that, as the MC often states: actions speak louder than words, but I agreed with the ML at the end. It wasn't clear to me how the MC truly felt about the ML (which is really a pity).

Having their personalities, their circumstances and their feeling described further and more extensively would have probably pushed me to rate this novel even better.

It is a slice-of-life fairy-tale, and the drama and intrigues aren't excessive and usually resolved very quickly. No angst whatsoever. It is a comfortable read. Yet, sometimes feels slightly bland.

Lastly, I also wanted to mention the translator, who did an amazing job. I really do not mind the pinyin as much as others. Of course, it took time to get into it, but once you did, it just added flair to the translation. So please do not hesitate reading it because of that! You'd be missing out.

Just as a side note: What I also wanted to mention is that I really like the character transformation of the third brother, and the first epilogue further depicting him (which was really one of the most touching aspects for me). <<less
