As for why this novel gets a ton of hate:  a few chapters (15-18 or something) set up the villains to be about as cruel as humanly possible.  It's explicit with the who, what, when, why, and how of the crimes, and again, it's evil.  The chapters have warnings and chunks can be skipped.  When you're reading about the literal demon king turning into a fluffball, you don't expect random paragraphs that feel like scenes out of "Hostel II" or "Saw IV" or whatever.

For me, it was worth it for the rest of the novel.  Good soup. <<less
