First of all, this is the only story where I liked the Emperor. Normally, I detest stories about Chinese Emperors, imperial court and harems. They are never my heroes, I learned to hate them. Second, the dialogues are amazing, all kinds of polite forms of Chinese speech are depicted ( because the MC pretends to be a eunuch and was one in his previous life) and superbly translated which I enjoyed. <<less

The FL transmigrates and finds herself in a really challenging environment - her body is super beautiful and requires a lot of care and her bridegroom, a husband of five days, is super powerful and super wealthy, there is no food or domstic help at home and she is in a new world. It's a lot to adjust to, a lot of work and not for everyone, for sure. Especially not for our FL who is a hard working poor person in her previous life and her desire is not even to have a family with kids, or a rich and powerful husband, but a simple farming live somewhere in a  provincial setting, nothing showy, as far away from the show business or entertainment  business as you can imagine. 

And she handles it all. She succeeds. Life gave her a giant lemon, so to speak, and she made herself a glass of lemonade.

 This novel is loaded with information about every folk belief possible about supernanural creatures (shapeshifting yao, spirits, ghosts, angels of death, etc.) and events, and the translator is immensely helpful with her notes and little pictures, but such densely packed with info narrative makes reading a bit slow. The good thing it explains a lot of things in other Chinese novels about cultivation and supernatural spirits which I did not get before. In that sense, it is not only a good novel, it opens doors into the world of all other novels about yao and human cultivators, spiritual pill makers, alternative folksy explanations of nature's phenomena (rain, thunder, etc.) <<less

Solid to the point of not being exciting writing and lazy translation which gets really bad by ch 146. Since each chapter is split in translation, it is currently translated only until ch 140/800 or so and you have to pay for reading it unless you have VIP status.  <<less

I read this twice, the second time - after the second translator took over. The difference is so jarring, it's like another novel altogether. As if you were reading some fanfiction continuation, from a different author. Switching to MTL does not feel as bad as switching to another translator in this case. This one switched from addressing the ML as Mr. Luo to addressing him as Uncle Luo which feels so alien and wrong in the middle of the novel, words can't describe it. She says that is how the author wrote it since the beginning of the novel. Maybe in Chinese it feels fine, but in English it is not. It feel both in*estuous and pe*ophilic, because the switch to Uncle happened right at the time they started having sex!

Anyways, I find this novel charming and loved learning about the power of molecules of smells and odors and olfactory system, and many ways of administering them in aromatherapy through inhaling incense, medicinal baths, massaging them into acupoints, etc. At least 50% of it is pure fiction, but I loved it. 

The love story in this novel is great as well. Very distinct and unusual. <<less
