The Earth is Online

Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

This one goes directly to my favorite novels list. It is amazing.

    • Both MC and ML are really smart and sly, and they keep calm even when the situation is frightening and disadvantageous for them. They have this tacit understanding that allow them to reverse the situation in their favour. But not all the times obviously.
    • I believe all the puzzles and games in the novel actually improve your IQ hahaha the games are really interesting and you never grow tired of them.
    • The romance is really good. Since the beginning the MC and ML have a story and it's beautiful, they are their better half.]
    • There are characters you will love, there are characters you will hate, some that you will love and hate at the same time, some characters that are enemies but you pity them when you should totally hate them.

This story is so so good, it's addicting. I never thought I'd like a "survival game" plot but the author managed to get me hooked.

It's fast paced and every bit of the story is so clever, you always want to know what will happen next, what's the next game, the next clue etc. (You probably shouldn't start it during finals like I did lol).

It's honestly one of the best novels (/books) I've ever read. It's funny, smart, engaging and also heart breaking.

Also, the relationship between the MC and ML progress... more>> slowly but just with the right pace. I don't know how to explain this but it's extremely satisfactory. <<less

This is a really interesting story with many unique puzzle to be solved.

The BL : the romance is just here and there, those who doesn't like BL can easily ignore it, so read this!

And all the villains are really interesting.

Spoiler

Every tower game is really weird, the villains are fairy tale characters that has twisted personality. And the games they made are detailed and unique, making you also want to think of how to solve it.

With many props and powers they gain overtime, manytimes you could missed the obvious clue to clear the game.

Spoiler

Sadly, since this story is a death survival game, many characters will be killed.

TLDR: A really great story which stands out amongst others in the apocalyptic survival and puzzle mysteries genre. It is not so much centred on the two male leads relationship as it is about their means to survive this new world full of challenges from the tower as well as other humans. The engagement readers have through the events and games of the novel generates a sense of realism, where you feel as if you're in the world of the novel yourself, trying to survive against all odds. 5/5 would... more>> recommend.

In terms of plot, the whole world is thrown into, what is, a despairing situation which calls for the mass population to exercise their wits and smarts in order to survive the tower's game. I think the author's approach to this genre is pretty unique, with mini arcs within bigger arcs of the story. I can tell the author planned this story out ahead, because hints to future events are tied in seamlessly through the smallest of details in the early chapters.

In terms of the game/mysteries in the novel, by no means did they have 'easy solutions'. This really depends on the person, but I personally think the author does a great job of engaging with the readers by presenting the rules of the game like the characters have as it gives readers the challenge of figuring whether they have the ability to solve the game themselves and survive the tower. Sometimes the solution is right in front, but other times it right outside of the box. However, that being said, the events of the game and the solution itself can get windy and long and I sometimes just scrolled through and skimmed through the details, so this may not be every reader's cup of tea.

In terms of the main character, there wasn't so much development because in my opinion, the author has already fleshed out the MC's character –or rather, the tower and the overall apocalypse hasn't changed the MC much, but has only served to reveal/accentuate the person he already is.

In terms of other characters, the author did a great job because every character that's introduced serves a purpose in the overall narrative. The MC meets many people along the novel; some die and few survive, but the author never really lets you forget the ones which have impact on the progress of the MC as a person and the events of the novel.

In terms of the relationship, I don't think the fact that this is danmei should stop anyone from reading or forming their own bias. It is honestly such a great read, and like previously mentioned this is not so much about finding love in the apocalypse than it is surviving it. I love the slow and gradual development of their relationship –which I think reflects accurately regarding the situation they're in. However, I was really drawn to the deep understanding the two have of each other, even before meeting, like the two are really just fated to be together. <<less

Wow I just... now that I’ve finished this journey — that’s what this story was, a beautiful, heart rending journey — I feel like I’m at such a loss. This novel is absolutely incredible. It’s smart, creative, funny, but very deep and profound. It touches upon what it means to be human, the resiliency of humanity, and explores the struggles of the human condition at our best and worst through analogy of the black tower games. We see the best and worst out of humanity in this story and I... more>> feel like it raises many issues that I would love to further discuss and explore. The characters are all so complex and loveable. At the end, I felt so torn. It was so happy but also quite bitter sweet. The future was paved with blood and heart-break.

Spoiler

I was so sad when Bai Ruiyao died but the fact that he was revived at the expense of Mu Huixue’s life leaves me torn. The extra in which the world never went online made me feel complicated. It was sweet and happy but because of the peace, my fave characters never had a chance to intersect the way they did in the main story. This story really is about making the best of what life deals to you.

[collapse]

The relationship between the leads is amazing. There’s so much love and trust but it’s underplayed. It’s a natural and equal partnership that you don’t see often in danmei. This was different, thought-provoking, but endlessly fascinating. I loved this story so much and am so thankful to the author and translator. I would definitely recommend and read again. <<less

This novel is really one of the gems out there. For those put off by the BL tag, this is not romance-centric. That is one of the things, I love about this novel. The romantic subplot does not overtake the overall plot. It is slow burn but, I find it really realistic. In a sort of apocalyptic world where they could die anytime, they prioritise surviving first.

The world building is definitely well done. The characterisation I'd say is great, considering other novels. The MC has a unique ability but is... more>> not a Gary Stu and not overpowered. Abilities have limitations which was wonderfully executed in the novel.

The logic of the games they play is definitely engaging and unconventional.

Judging the book in a apocalyptic/mystery/fantasy, it is really well executed. The ending was satisfying and leaves the reader feeling content and hopeful.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to solve puzzles and clues. <<less

Very well written. Kudos to the author. Decently translated. Kudos to the translator (s) for saving my brain from mtl-ing this novel. This is an apocalyptic story that doesn't involve zombies but harsh games that tests the mettle of humankind. Each game is brilliantly done (or maybe I'm just not that clever ?) often with twist that one doesn't see coming. This novel is a censored BL (booo!) towards the end of the story but what I like is that it isn't a BL with thriller aspects, but a thriller... more>> that just happen to have protagonists that are gay. I also like the dual strength/weakness of Tang Mo. He has a somewhat

that makes Tang Mo a formidable fighter and player, but at the same time, supress his ability and Tang Mo is just a little-harder-to-kill librarian. Upset that once I've caught up it's almost over because this is truly too good to let go. Relationship between MC and ML is very genuine and shown, not told, through their actions and implicit trust and understanding. Still takes a backseat to overall plot and mystery, which I appreciate.

Unfortunately am unsure of how well this will read through the second time after I know all of the games and mystery's answers. I feel like a lot of the driving force of this novel is the suspense and thrill of... more>> chasing the unknown, chapter by chapter. Still a great read <<less

Anyway, I recommend this to anyone who loves survival and mystery novels. The games the black tower forces the players to play are mind blowing. There are so many instances where I just ended up bowing down at the sheer ingenious of the solutions the MC finds. The romance is subtle and 3/4 of the time whilst reading this, I keep forgetting that this is a BL novel and not shounen/stallion. Because usually in Yaoi novels, the MC would be surrounded by pretty boy teammates and female antagonists. But in this amazing novel, it gives us readers variety - Different characters of both genders; so complicated and strong in personalities you just become obsessed with them. Sure, some of them are frustrating, but I ended up falling in love with one off the most annoying fly in the series (shocker).

Spoiler

Why did he have to die? T_T... Baby-faced Bai~!!!!

[collapse]

Funny enough, all the dangerous NPCs are pretty loveable and adorable (to me, at least. The players are all scared of them hahahahaha). The MC even gets along (in the loosest term) with a few of them via bulliying them shamelessly (in my opinion anyway). Hahahahaha!

Spoiler

I love the interactions between MC and Mosiac. They're hilarious! AND the many times MC makes the NPCs speechelsss because he's so shameless is so funny!

Just... give this novel a try. Awesome characters. Brilliant storyline. Thrilling and not boring at all. What more could you ask for? This novel is a f*cking gem! <<less

I know that it wasn't romance-focused and I still kept looking for it. The author only sprinkled bits and pieces of romance (it wasn't enough for me!!!) but the story is of course more on the infinite flow genre.

The game instances were unique and were based on fairytale characters but with a twisted personality and had dangerous consequences.

Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo were both smart and mature. What I like about Tang Mo was his intelligence, independence and his OPness. Same goes with Fu Wenduo. He knows what he wants and had defined his feelings for Tang Mo early on. During dangerous times, we can see him protect Tang Mo and their cooperation was done so fluidly it seemed that they can read each other's minds. But it actually boils down to the deep understanding they had of each other.

The extra chapters provided us with a glimpse of an AU where the Black Tower never existed. We see the characters live their lives and the main leads finally meet each other in person. For me it was like instant love (but of course they've known each other for years online) which I didn't mind. Like minded people probably get together with just a look, a gesture and the feeling that they have for the other. I specially liked the scene the morning after when they were both in Tang Mo's apartment in Suzhou... it was just very domestic and sweet that we didn't see in the main story.

A couple of chapters were also dedicated for an epilogue in the original timeline. The leads went to Suzhou and Fu Wenduo helped Tang Mo clean his apartment. Mr. Fu proposed on living in Suzhou instead of Beijing. This shows that they were ready to live together, facing the new future of the world.

Absolutely loved it

This is the third time I read the entire novel, I discover more each time I read it. It’s easy to read despite the complicated topics and well paced. The ending was neither abrupt or dragged out so also 10/10

The relationship isn’t as lovey-dovey as most BL’s (which is logical as the novel is quite literally almost the end of the world) and focusing mostly on how the MC and ML understand each other so well.
In the extras we get a look into their lives (including the important side characters) if the black tower didn’t exist which I really really liked!

If I can’t find anything to read in a while I’ll probably re-read this again :))

Finally finished this and I loved it. It's very light on romance (reads more like shounen-ai than yaoi) that it sometimes feels like an afterthought, but the story is incredible. So many interesting characters, whether human, monster or an underground person, they all had multi-faceted and very impactful personalities.
Spoiler

The way the characters are written is so good, that I was heartbroken and cried when a Psychopath I "abhorred" died so suddenly

[collapse]

This novel is a huge brain teaser, I mostly had to turn off my brain and stopped trying to solve the puzzles along with the characters and simply go with the flow. The author is truly very intelligent and there was hardly any loose ends or plotholes, despite how long it was. Though there's a lot of deaths, there's also a lot of hope.
Spoiler

I particularly love the ending, a part of me was hoping for a fairytale ending where all the dead would be resurrected, but there's something about rising up from the ashes that's so thrilling

A wonderful novel all in all.

It’s absolute great/a solid story with a pinch of a fresh concept. You definitely won’t feel bored or disconnected with the novel and it’s pacing as long as this type of survival based genre is something you like or willing to give it a shot (which is definitely recommended by the way).

MC, ML and other side characters are definitely worth noticing (doesn’t matter under which category they fall according to your opinion).
However I do have some regrets yet the biggest one is that disgusting Bai guy (baby face youth) resurrection part. Many delulu might find that crazy piece of sh*t their kindaaa thing to solve their solulu but not me. I really wanted him dead since the moment he appeared and it also shows the power this author had on my emotions as a-reader to create such a vile character that rubbed me the wrong way continuously.

What would you do if black towers suddenly spawned around the world and told you to attack its levels or die? What about when everyone gets abilities and yours is a book that bullies you? And then you connect with this guy who's suspiciously like your crush you play bridge with over an egg?

This is many people's introduction to the infinite/unlimited flow genre and for good reason. (If you read Infinite Flow, but haven't read this yet, what are you doing?) It has great action scenes as well as some... more>> comedy

The MC has a hat that, if he bangs his head against something, he'll get an item. And yes, his abilities book does bully him often

It does however have very little romance, it's mostly a subplot so if you're looking for something with more romance I don't recommend it. That being said, if you dislike romance this might be right up your alley.

I've seen TEIO being compared to ORV before and that's not exactly accurate. They're two very different series (teio was even serialized first) but I could see how some people might get the same vibes due to the scenarios. <<less
