I agree with the low rating of this piece. It has a couple of good characters, so it is not completely hopeless, but the story itself is neither good, nor bad. This novel surprised me. I am in the middle of reading it right now and I savor every page, if not every paragraph of it.... more>> It is very simple in terms of plot and story arcs, nothing original there, and not as brilliant as "Quickly wear the face of the devil" or as charming as "Don't pick up your boyfriends from a tr*sh bin", but it is very well written and translated and all characters are full of goodness and kindness. Even the bad guys are kind of good and behave properly! And it makes me laugh and chuckle from time to time. It feels like a good writer decided to write a "feel good" novel similar to "Very Happy" by  Yue Xia Die Ying and she succeeded. I love it! <<less

Very quiet, slowly narrated story about kids growing up in medieval China (1300s, Ming dynasty). A 29yo modern Chinese woman who quit middle school to bring up her 2 siblings transmigrated into the body of a 8yo girl from that era and has to take care of her 3 siblings and both parents. There is magic, of course, in that fantastical story, but the real magic of the story is people. Very nice people and relationship between family and friends and tons of interesting details about food, cooking, hunting, fishing, farming, and domestic life of that era.... more>>

There are two offputting things in it, though, that I have to mention. First, it is about child labor, very young kids, preteens, are working more than modern adults do in this novel. I know that historically it was like that, but our FL is a modern 30y.o. woman who would never let kids that age work in her family or her business. Yet in this novel she is OK with it. Second is s*avery. After she employed every child and every relative or neighbour she could trust with her secret recipes and her produce, she bought her first child s*ave. That really turned me off and by then I could not care less about her love life and her business or whatnot.  So, I stop caring right in the middle of the novel and quit reading it by the time the FL and the ML decide to marry in ch 387 or something. Enough is enough. 

I should add, once I started on that topic, that the author enjoys fat shaming and ridiculing persons with eating disorders a bit too much. The two main villains of the first half of the story, the FL's grandma and her aunt, are women who are not just morally flawed, they are ill, from the modern point of view. And mental illness makes people behave in a very egocentric way. It makes life difficult. It is not as simple as being irritable, lazy, or envious. One is addicted to money hoarding, another - to food, and neither can do much about that addiction. I don't know about you, guys, but I mostly felt pity, not anger, when I was reading parts about them. <<less
