To Be A Virtuous Wife

Description

As a virtuous wife, does it include tolerating his cousin, enduring his concubines, bearing his mother?

If you will not let me live freely, why would I let you live in satisfaction?

Did fate let women time-travel so they could learn the three morals and four virtues?

Rather than act like a coward and live, it would be better to live in satisfaction and die.

The translation is excellent, the politics and the plot are complex (not that much compared to tyrannical Wang beloved wife but still, people are not brain dead compared to other historical novels) , characters are multi dimensional

But... It's just so bland, I am really trying to like the story but I don't feel invested at all. Maybe it's the writing

Anyway it get a 3/5

This novel is amazing! I love how this is a real historical fiction instead of ancient China being used as a background for the story. This involves many historical elements and conduct. The MC is smart and seductive she was able to adapt right away. She didn’t try to revolutionize things but went along with the time period. The make lead is rational and scheming. I love how there love slowly developed from just lust! There character development as well and the story is bittersweet as well.

Such a treasure. I have seen this novel years ago when I read A SLIGHT SMILE IS DEVASTATING, but the summary was so uninteresting and I was not into transmigration. It's only now that I found out what a treasure this is. Finishing this novel gives me such a good fluffy feels. Definitely reading this one more time.

To those who wants to read this, please don't be discouraged by all the footnotes by the translator. She has used a lot of the chinese titles during the first chapters so it... more>> can be a little daunting but after that, it's such a fun and educational read. Also, I appreciate the author's POV that fighting for the throne doesn't need violence. <<less

This was plain and nice story.

Some people may think it's boring, but I liked it. The FL wasn't a genius or had some cheat, she was just a common modern woman.

She found herself in the body of an ancient woman and decided to live her life to the fullest, because she was always ready to end up dead.

... more>> The man she met there was also nothing special, he was smarter than the average ancient people and also quite black bellied.

The lives their life enjoying the goods and avoiding the bad. Specially their relationship was quite good.

Spoiler

What I love the most about this story is the women. They all have different personalities, some really annoying, but nobody is truly evil or mean, they all have desires and wishes, and they live to fulfill them, and if they need to harm someone, they will including the FL.

And my favorite part is how He Heng got the throne. It wasn't schemes or plotting, nor was he who got the throne, but his mother who won it for him. It really depicted well the power women had or could have. And why concubines and position in harem mattered.

[collapse]

At the end the story was realistic. There was nothing crazy, it was just like that, and sometimes reality is just like that, it just happens with nothing really crazy. <<less

So this is my first time writing reviews and all I can say is this is a good read. For me this FL has good control over her self, she thinks before acting and what I wanna say is this is pure love.

What I just hate is the translators using chinese words which is hard to understand luckily I understand some of it through the sentences but it is actually hard if you can't understand the words and the sentences gets destroyed. So if you're here for a good and... more>> relaxing read go and start now. <<less

It's funny that this is the first chinese romance novel I've read but I've never reviewed before this.

Looking back, I've read chinese novel for maybe 5 years or more. Can't believe how many I've read.

Anyway, imo this story is still one of the best. The palace conspiracies and intrigue is the best. Every sentence made me felt kind of s*upid to not understand the underlying meaning.

I think that MC luck is really unbelievable and I love ML. He is ambitious while not unscrupulous. I think their ending was the best.... more>> They learn to trust and in turn, love each other. A truly fantasy like story. Definitely the best! <<less

I was pretty wary of this novel because of the mixed rating it had on the reviews (I'm the type to read reviews before diving in.), but to my surprise I actually enjoyed it. The novel itself I think isn't supposed to be taken seriously because everything in the plot was just a background for the love story. There were schemes and politics but it was just there to make our protagonist shine and was pretty shallow most of the times. A pretty fluffy read in my opinion with little... more>> to no drama.

FL was pretty realistic in her mindset as she was someone who prioritized herself rather than thinking of running away or scheming everyone. Gurl took the best route in this kind of situation which was being good to her husband. ML on the other hand is a loyal and devoted guy from start to end. What I liked about him was that he gradually fell for FL and not immediately, since at first he just wanted to create a good relationship as husband and wife but ended up diving in too deep (Like me in every novel).

The translation was very good, but damn there were so many untranslated words on the first few chapters that it made me totally confused what was what even though the meaning was at the bottom of the chapter (Too lazy to look). It took some time for me get used to it but I did eventually, so that's good I guess? I did finish it after all... <<less

I completed this story a while ago and constantly go back. It was my first Chinese web novel and I've been hooked on them ever since.

Of all the stories with a modern female lead transmigrating to ancient times, TBAVW is the ideal, with a protagonist able to make the best of her circumstances without losing herself. What I love the most about the story is the pacing. Nothing feels superfluous or excessive. No drawn out misunderstandings for the sake of extending the plot. Every loose end is addressed and every... more>> character's motivations or behaviors are explored to their logical end. The content of the story was also brilliant. It's rare for a story's ideas to strike a chord with me, but every once in a while a line from the protagonist would make me pause.

Other stories of this genre either focus on the revenge, the romance, or the politics. With TBAVW it felt like the protagonist was in the midst of everything, taking things as they come, but just trying to live her life the best way she knew how. It's really refreshing. She never feels passive either and I attribute that again to the author's ability to pace things and plot things well. <<less

I left it at 36 chapters I think, I and read the end spoiler... xD, because it was too slow and boring not biggie reasons but, I guess I wanted more action and decided to drop it and read it later. My opinion is that this novel is 4/5 for my liking.

I recommend reading this when you want to spend time (at school for myself).

And don't worry it skips the private scenes, thats what I saw till c36, I don't know if they will go into detail in the... more>> future chapters about their intimate privacy.. I hope not. Still what I mean in the chapters that I read it says that they will do intimate scenes but will go to next day, or at other place in the story's plots. <<less

I fell in love with the way the FL lead her life. She didnt want anything. She just wanted to 'live' as this new character in the story. All the incidents that happened were dealt with realisticly, so much that you would think this novel was actually an autobiography of someone. The balance throughout the whole novel is refreshing and those twists and turns are very successful in keeping the reader engaged. The novel is straightforward, laced with humor and subtle philosophy.

I appreciate how the author depicted the characters as... more>> real people who lived. Oftentimes you see chinese novels describing characters either as too OP or too dumb to the point where you wonder "how tf did this person survive up until now?". All in all, the novel was truly 123 chapters of worth it. No useless fillers or side characters. In the end everything was tied up perfectly. Genuinely come back to reread this alot too. <<less

About the title:

Plainly, it is a mockery. What is the meaning of virtuous and who decides it is so? Is it women, is it men, is it society? And a woman working by her own designs within society's framework... how far can she go without her virtues being put under question?

About the summary:

It is so misleading, that I held off reading this story for a long time. This isn't about a transmigrated female character out for revenge, this is about one who cares *nothing* for revenge and just wants to... more>> enjoy life. She's struggled in her original life to live well and meaningfully, and takes her 2nd life as a bonus where she desires to, for once, go after what she wants without worrying for the future. After all, she's died once, hasn't she?

As for the story review:

In a setting where the 2nd Prince He Heng has just married a Princess Consort, he desires a wife of equal standing, who isn't meek and timid and bows her head to everything. He himself has a strong personality, is subtle in his ambitions yet determined to see them through and often uses indirect ways to get them done.

So really, the transmigrated Qu Qing Ju is PERFECT for him. She wakes up in the ill body of the original consort and goes "welp, guess I'm stuck here. Might as well make the best of it." Practical, pragmatic and also super indulgent, her motto is 'live well for as long as you can, so that you have no regrets'.

Spoiler

Considering it's an arranged marriage, they have to go through the whole process of falling in love together, but our MC is, like I said, very practical and realistic. In such an era, where harems are the norm, how does one expect fidelity of one's husband? So she's pretty blaise in her attitude towards the ML, if he likes her, he can keep liking her and she will reciprocate equally. If he stops liking her, well, it was good while it lasted, she'll just continue on living her best life.

Poor ML feels as if he's getting strung along by his devious, pretty and clever wife, but seeing as he genuinely loves these traits of hers and feels it is compatible to his own personality, he keeps pursuing her. He wants someone who can keep up with him, and honestly, MC seems to be doing it without trouble or conscious effort. He Heng really falls HARD.

MC slowly realises she's catching feels though, which makes for a beautiful ending where she expresses as such to her husband, who has been patiently waiting for this.

[collapse]

The transation is really good. At first one might find the chinese terms used excessive, but they add a certain flair to the story. Just keep pushing through, this is one of the sweetest stories I've read with very little angst between the main couple. <<less

I highly encourage to give this novel a try. This is more realistic than other stories, so no super powers or anything. They're all humans, and they could change for the better or for the worse. I love that the character development doesn't just happen between Qu Qing Ju and He Heng, but also the side characters. Plus, the ending was very satisfying <3

Wow I've got to say I was pretty impressed reading this. I've never done a review before but I really felt the need to do so. If you're hesitating about reading this please don't. This story was great. I always try to stick to stories with good writing that aren't so unrealistic so I was going to stay away from this but once I started reading I couldn't stop. Most transmigration stories I read with badass female MCs were usually soldiers, assassins, doctors, or some peerless genius in a past... more>> life, and don't get me wrong I get my kicks out of reading those every now and again, but I appreciated this story. The MC doesn't try to be who she isn't. She doesn't get all red-faced and blush or run away from her feelings. She's practical, she knows what she's capable of and doesn't step outside her boundaries to do some amazing feet. She doesn't want to be peerless she just wants to laze around, enjoy life and do whatever she wants. She quickly accepts her situation and doesn't bit*h about already being married and how life is so unfair which is what hooked me in. I hate when the MC is all unrealistic or drags on the relationship until almost the end of the story or can't admit her feelings. This MC knew life was fickle in the times she transmigrated into and she just wanted to live good. If he ML liked her and treated her fine then she would roll with it. She didn't think up elaborate schemes to make him fall in love with her. Honestly, she was just herself the whole time and that's why he liked her so much. Man, I can't even find more words. I really enjoyed this though. <<less

·Great protagonist and ML

I've always loved characters that are level-headed and reasonable. The FL is a character that thinks before she acts and is also self-aware. She knows her strengths and limitations and is not a character that is driven by emotions. Qu Qing Ju is one of the few FL leads in romance novels that I actually love. As for the ML, honestly, the bar is so low for MLs for me that as long as they're not total a**holes towards their FLs, then that's good enough but He... more>> Heng is actually a well-written character. He's cunning and can be quite hyprocritical at times but he has always been respectful of QQJ and has never forced himself on her. He admires her intelligence and capabilities and is not a raging misogynist (the bar is six feet under lol).

·Well-written romance

I love that the romance wasn't instant and that there was never a grand declaration of love in this novel. The love the two main characters had for each was shown and not spoken so to speak, especially He Heng's. QQJ's belief that actions speak louder than words with regards to love is actually quite reasonable, especially considering the era that she transmigrated to. It's understandable why she took a long time to believe in HH. I also love that there wasn't any s*upid misunderstandings between them. A lot of the times, romance writers use that to create unnecessary drama and angst. It can be quite annoying.

·Writing style is good. Generic plot. Translator did a great job.

I love the way this novel was written. It has a very calm and slice of life kind of feel. The plot is kind of generic but the author was able make it up for it with a good supporting cast. There was suprisingly not a lot of s*upid one-dimensional characters in this novel. A good feat considering the genre. I was able to understand the " villains' " motivations and actions.

·The last few chapters dragged the story a bit but it's not a big deal, still a good 4.5 for me. <<less

Simply one of the best novels of this type.

Main chacacter time-travelled to ancient times to become wife to a prince. I found this novel very refreshing; main character tried her best in circumstances she was given, without going over the top - she didn't became OP doctor, CEO, didn't start her business, didn't get deux ex machina magical or martial arts skills. She is proactive, but fist and foremost thinks of herself as she knows what does it mean to live in times when a man can have multiple woman... more>> and feelings are fleeting. She isn't trembling willow, innocent and too kind.

I also apptriciate only 123 chapters, the plot doesn't stretch with boring fillers. Political side of the story is in balance to the romece. Side characters who are relevant to the plot have their depth enough for us to see their motivation.

Male Lead, behold!, has some characteristics other than calm and collected. I found their love story interesting, so if people prefer romance that doesn't resolves around much drama and anguish and love triangles and what not, but one that also involves MC on more than "she was a beauty therefore he loves her'' level, I think you'll find this novel up to your tastes.

10/10 recommended. <<less

Honestly, I was reading with zero expectation. But, in the end, this is such a beautiful story.

The story is about the life of FL after her transmigration. It's more of slice of life kind of story; with little bit of palace politics. Just a tiny bit.

What I love about this story is, the FL is not an OP woman who schemed a grand revenge on her family or enemies. She is just an ordinary woman who knows her position and what she's good at. Managing people and how to grasp... more>> the heart of others. She knows where to step, what to talk, how to make others happy, but also never takes sh*t from others. She tried to live to the fullest. As long as the ML still favor her, she will do everything she could to live an enjoyable life; and never bother with others that didn't come to provoke her.

Anw, I can't say too much or it will spoil more. This is a treasure; glad to find this story in some reading list. Thank you for the translator's hardwork! It's not perfect, but still wonderful. <<less

This remains to this day one of my favourite novels to go back to while I’m waiting for the novels I’m following to get updated.

A modern woman who knows exactly what she wants and how to play her cards right gets thrown back in time to be the wife of an equally smart and capable prince of an older Chinese dynasty.

The growing relationship between Qing Ju and He Heng is satisfying to watch and the novel describes a beautiful romance that isn’t overly idealistic.
