The Second Coming of Gluttony

“The son of god Gula has returned.”

I was lost in the world of gambling.

I turned my back on my family and even betrayed my lover.

I wasted every day of my life.

It was a life of tr*sh.

The reality told me thus:

That I would amount to nothing no matter what I did.

In order to change my pathetic life, I chose fantasy, instead.

Even then, it was the same story.

I wondered if salvation would come at the end of the long road.

But, I was forced to kneel down in defeat in front of a powerful entity.

The tower I built up with my own hands crumbled into nothingness.

Just for once, I dearly wished to know the truth about myself.

“Come closer, my child…”

I will not hold back this time.

This novel was one of if not the most polarizing novel I have ever read in my 5+ years of reading web novels. It has some of if not the highest highs, with superior action and dreary, overbearing story beats. However, it also has some of if not the cringiest moments in web novel history. The cognitive dissonance experienced in this novel is astounding, we can go from super serious and awesome moments, such as:... more>>

When he and Teresa have to make the trek back from the parasites territory, when he establishes his golden rule, when he trains with his past self to overcome his own weakness.

. It cannot be understated that this novel would 100% be a 10/10 without the 100 tons of cringe that comes with the author writing seol's interactions with the female cast. I do not understate how bad this writing is, if this novel did not have one of the best opening arcs, and some of the very great moments it does, I would not even bother giving this novel a 2/5 as I have. Overall, I would not recommend reading this novel, it feels like the author wanted to write both a cringe harem novel and an awesome exploration of humanities ability to go beyond their limits, and decided to do both at once. <<less

It felt wrong not giving this a 5/5, though I don’t think it necessarily deserves it based on more objective measures of quality. In spite of the novels’ flaws, I really enjoyed it throughout.

The emotional parts are really good, I got teary eyed at his dealings with his family and his attempts to mend their relationship. The harem doesn’t detract from the story and each girl has a genuinely distinct personality. The action was fun, though power levels felt utterly arbitrary for most fights, like when ... more>>

he was possessed by his future self and temporarily gained the power to kill an army commander despite having the body of a level 3-4 iirc at the time.

In addition, whenever the plot didn’t make him a literal manchild he was a cool and smart MC who could get through tough situations with plans and grit.

And now onto the bad. The main character is made out to have the disposition of an actual child, especially whenever he interacts with women. That actually leads him to getting a harem while being utterly clueless. There were quite a few points where he’s literally had the answer told to him multiple times yet when he finally figures it out it’s considered a eureka moment. His power level and training are extremely cliche, with him training harder than anyone. He also almost never uses his innate ability in tons of situations where it would immediately help him and save lives. Finally regarding the harem (big spoilers)
Spoiler

two of the four girls we see get with him by the end literally r*ped him. They got him blackout drunk and got pregnant from the one night stand so he ended up taking responsibility. Even the second girl was him getting drunk and ending up cheating on the first girl. They try to play it off as fate, with him trying to not sleep with them but ending up doing so anyways, even if he’s literally in a different country on vacation the girl he’s fated with will happen to also be vacationing there and he’ll sleep with them, whether that be through alcohol or just being swept up in the mood. It left a bitter taste that these otherwise rather excellent characters end up resorting to raping him.

Everything in this novel is good beside MC. Damn he is really annoying sometime, weak-will, very stubborn, reckless (i can understand the logics behind that kind of personality but I just cant like it). It is still bearable compare to other tr*sh Korean/ Chinese egotistic MC tho. (There are more about his personality that really piss me off but I cant describe it with words)

The biggest letdown of this novel is the first 10-15 chapters. I dropped this novel 3 times at the beginning because how shitty those chapter... more>> make me feel. The 4th time I just skipped a lot of those chapters content to finally be able to enjoy this novel (since I was too bored and had nothing to read, I decided to give this another try as a desperate attempt to release my boredom). Also just let you know 80% of the female characters are crazy b*tches, most of the time they are badass bit*h but also often can be really annoying unlovable dumbf*ck and there are many of them :v.

Edit: it took 220 chapters for MC to grow into someone likeable to me (somewhat you can say he is no more naive and dump, he became a somewhat badass mc). Also the more I read the more I get the feeling that author must had miserable encounters with woman cause the number of crazy b*tches and their insanity keep increasing. The only saving grace for this is they don't have too much screen-time to make you raged (still their personality is just really tr*shy). Also the one of the main antagonists aka bug queen is so dumb, I think the only reason humanity achieved victory because bug queen is just so dumb, you can say this is a really thick thick thick plot amor.

2nd Edit: Finally finished this shit. Cant even bother to read the last dozen chapters properly (i rolled and skipped very often). This sh*t is somewhat decent but full of plot amor to the point its really boring to read the final battle. MC personality progressed but still very cringe to read (I skipped a lot of his internal struggles and most of the scenes where he interacts with his family because it will rage me somehow). And the more I read the more I find bug queen s*upid. The one who supposed to be s*upid is MC but he somehow suddenly become really smart after coming to paradise (he pull out schemes after schemes like its a joke) despite being brainwashed and act like a fool since his childhood, then became a tr*sh after losing his power. Despite all the things I hate about this novel I must compliment the author for doing absolutely amazing job in keeping the shitty thing moderately so even when I cringe so much I still keep reading and finishing this novel. There are so many brain-dead crazy woman in this novel luckily they have very little screen times. So clap clap clap for the author. <<less

A fairly entertaining, though 'peppered with issues' story.

The Good:

  • MC isn't a totally selfish jerk (sometimes, if the plot needs it)
  • Fairly likeable 'kingmaker' story.
The BAD:

  • First 100 chapters are disappointing.
  • Story starts as some potentially interesting Fantasy/Horror Hybrid before abandoning all that to do something else (LitRPG/Xanxia)
  • So much random/lucky/plot armor/forced plotting
  • MC is an idiot.
  • MC is a plot puppet.
  • OP MC is always clueless about using resources properly-- until hes 'supposed to be smart'.
  • Most characters have little depth, and are usually only as good as the role they play in getting things done. A few have more personality- but still are puppets to make the MC look good.
  • Harem is 'forced plot' nonsense. 'Reality' is often nonsense when it comes to harem issues. Another 'dense protag' surrounded by women and ignoring their care, except when unrealistically encouraging them in 'I didn't know any better' ways no one would believe..
  • Everything is 'theater'. So much 'numbers are your power'- where levels pretend to be relevant to fights/ability-- but actually aren't. MC fights above level all the time- then gains levels and fights 'below'-- and still is 'challenged'.
  • On that note the author purposely trolls the reader with a lot of nonsense- They even lampshade some issues a bit in the side stories when kids at an orphanage challenges some of the story nonsense...
The... more>> different:

  • Nothing, really. I suppose it attempts to handle addiction and betrayal in a heartfelt way- unfortunately it only does on the surface, and though partially successful- it fails overall.
    Spoiler

MC pretty much gaslights his sister in order to pointlessly keep a secret he'll reveal anyway. Great show of betrayal when someone 'instinctively' knows you're lying- despite wanting to actually trust.

When I thought i'd love to get more slice of life romance.. They really did give what I want. The side story is specially good, you feel like the novel is written for the sake of the side story. Tbh I want a more detailed romance for all the women. If there's something I'm unsatisfied with then that would be Seol Jihu is a dumb guy when it comes to romance.

Aside from the last Battle which is against the Otherworldly God that is shown in the side stories (this action part really wasn't needed tbh) . I give everything a 5/5 because of realistic approach of the story.

I love it. <<less

I was obsessed with this novel for probably a year when it was releasing every day. It had everything I looked for in a novel with action, horror elements, and of course the OP main character. There were some things that I wasn't too fond of towards the middle, but I stayed with it. Over time my passion for the novel went away... this was due to a few things, but without any major spoilers the biggest disappointment was... the harem.

Harem is not my favorite genre, in fact, I typically... more>> avoid it like the plague but due to me reading the novel from its early days the genre list did not include it at the time. And once again it left a bad taste in my mouth. The side stories only made it worse for me and I can not give it anything above a 3 star. I should have known it was gonna turn out like this when a new "sexyyyy" female character was introduced every 10 chapters then put on the backburner, but truly hoped it would not turn out this way.

The main character went from being a terrible person to a naive teenager, this can be irritating at times but overall I liked him. The female characters start off strong and badass then turn into... yeah. Not a bad read if you like harem, action, and OP characters. <<less

I'm really tired with protagonist 's obsession with breast. It's really amazing how he sleepwalks himself between some women's breast now and then.

The plot is good. Mc's power is balanced, not too op.

But I'm not really satisfied with MC suddenly becoming saint considering he was tr*sh among tr*sh. It'd have been better seeing him struggling to become a good person.

And he's supposedly intelligent, so being dense about women does not seem much convincing, instead he gives the vibe of a scum...

i am suprised that so many people disliked this so much. I mean yeah this novel had cons and it isnt at the level of ORV or TFC but come on its still unique and good. I read too many novels where MC claim himself/herself as tr*sh and wants to change but this is the only novel that MC is really tr*sh. He is a gambler and like all the gamblers he deceived his family for more money.

He even sold his sisters car and pc. He is weak minded and... more>> he doesnt miraculy change over a month. He is slowly changing and its is lasting for several years. This is the harsh reality and I liked it. His family dont forgive him easily and I liked it too. It feels real. <<less

Not a bad read, but overrated. In my opinion good translation quality makes it look better than it actually is. Above average wish fulfilment story, but not a masterpiece. Balances tension with a mixture of serious and non serious moments, which many novels can't get right.

Long story short, if you're looking for a state of the art work, you're in for a disappointment. But if you spend over an hour per day in public transport getting to work/college, it's ok for killing time.

Ngl I don't get it. The appeal.

Within the span of 5 chapters, there have been 4 different girls he's encountered. And he has ONLY ENCOUNTERED WOMEN. I man yes women are great but I feel like this foreshadowing a theme. Given this has harem written on it, what happened to encountering both genders to have a realistic story hm?

He has yet to talk to 1 f*cking man. Other than himself. This seems to be foreshadowing something huh. Maybe a super narcissist book? Idk I mean I'm trying to give it... more>> a chance damnit but this is boring so far and most korean adventure/fantasy novel usually start way better. Man this writing. Message me and I could tell you better recommendations. Even solo leveling has better writing in the beginning. And that's my lowest recommendation.

To be fair, I'm sure this becomes amazing eyes 400👀chapters. But nah it's cringy for me. And boring. <<less

The most important thing about this novel is The Author already has clear idea how to end this novel. This make the story interesting from the start to the end (the story don't get prolonged unnecessarily).

Here are the main point of my review. I will elaborate it later.

pros:

  1. Already completely translated
  2. Good character development
  3. Decent romance and comedy
  4. Consistent story telling and decent amount info dumping
  5. Good climax on every story arc
cons

  1. Cliffhanger is very unbearable (thankfully its already completed)
  2. MC start as scum (you can't have good character development if MC already perfect prince charming)
  3. MC sometimes make silly decision
Pros point 1 is very important!, you won't get any cliffhanger because it was the worst thing that happen in this novel (you can see the agony of fellow reader from the comment section).

Good Character development, MC start as scum and tr*sh of society then get better, you can also view this as the story "how to overcome your addiction". Mostly, everything happen for a reason, and the reason you will find out in the later chapter. I see a lot of negative review point negative aspect of MC, but I can assure you that you can find the answer why he do that in the later chapter (depend whether you keen on the story or not). Sadly these negative reviewer only read the early part of this novel, but I BELIEVE YOU NEW READER can do better because now the novel already completely translated (this is why point 1 is very important)

Decent romance and comedy, in my opinion, the amount romance in the story is enough, while every comedy that the author make manage to make me laugh (this point is purely based on preference, so I don't expect you got 100% same experience)

Consistent story telling and decent amount info dumping, the rule set by the author is consistent, so you will find the info dumping that explain the rule bearable. As the story goes on, there will be few new rules but the explanation won't get you bored or confused.

Good climax on every story arc, you will find yourself expecting to read the next chapter ASAP, and this will happen a lot of time. This novel was very good to keep you hooked up with its story.

CONCLUSION:

Every person has its own preference and yes this novel has some drawback that maybe not fit to your taste.

But this is very good novel and worth to be read, I hope this review won't skyrocket your expectation to this book but enough to give you a reason to give it a try. And also I suggest you don't quit halfway because as I said b4 there is a lot of character development, if you only read the first half then you will only see the half side of this novel.

Spoiler

at the end of this novel I said to my self "don't cry because it's over, smile because it's happened". I hope you will agree with this review and enjoy this novel as much as I do

I have read most of the famous novels mentioned on novel updates but this is by far the best novel out there. Sure, there are some plot holes here and there but which fantasy novel doesn't. Also, the start, the fighting, the end; all were executed superbly. I don't particularly like novels with Harem tag but harem in this novel was okay. Not good but okay.

ML - The main lead is not the best imao but okay. His back story is good. Sometimes his actions and emotions don't click well... more>> as he acts too immature and irresponsibly. His character improves later on but still goes from Bad to acceptable.

ENDING - The ending unlike most Korean novels was not rushed and was beautifully executed.

TRANSLATION - The translation quality was superb. The translator does an excellent job to give justice to this great novel. ACTION - The action or fight scenes in this novel are some of the best if not the best. The battle strategy and how the ML gets the better of opposition even in a disadvantageous position really makes it an interesting read. Even the Villains are good as they don't take beating one-sidedly and even get the better of ML in some situations.

FORESHADOWING - Like most of the readers, I am a big fan of novels that executes foreshadowing really well. And believe me this novel has tons of it.

For me, this novel is the best that I have read until recently. So, if someone is thinking of giving it a try, try it out ASAP and you won't be disappointed. 😁✌️ <<less

There's nothing much to say honestly.

It was just simply... great. Hilarious, sad, horrifying. This novel brought a cacophony of expressions and emotions throughout the novel with an ending that doesn't make you feel empty in the least. Nothing was jarring or in your face. Everything had its place with it being one of the topmost novels I have read to date.

Decent novel, I enjoyed it too the end. Some sections were a bit tedious to get through, but overall it was a satisfying read. The first 25% or so of the story was by far the best, the story quality does drop slowly the further you read. I would score the first 1/4 = 4.5 stars, and then it slowly degrades to the end where I would score a 3.5 stars.

The side stories/after stories were a bit cringe, but still worth reading if you have nothing better to do.

TL quality... more>> was superb.

If you plan to finish reading this novel, do not think too hard about the overarching plot mechanics, as you will quickly devolve into plot hole after plot hole. Just enjoy reading it as is, without thinking too much. <<less

Wonderful translation, perhaps one of the most fluid reads on here. But the novel itself has many problems.
To begin with, the main character's special 'innate ability' is overpowered and simply doesn't follow the rest of the system governing the universe.

Spoiler

Called an 'innate ability', he somehow has it on earth regardless of involvement in Paradise yet somehow keeps it when inside the Paradise universe. Yet somehow, when his physical body is returned to Earth, he keeps his appearance but NONE of his physical ability? By the end on every return he should be near Superman.

[collapse]

Later, the rules they established regarding that overpowered ability were overturned, and amplified, even though the boundaries for them were already clearly established in a manner that left no room for argument.

Another area of issue is in terms of expectations. Near the beginning towards middle of the novel, the novel was spectacular in that it made no guarantee for the lives of the main characters, Deaths happened, important and otherwise. Sadly, it does not live up to the expectations it lays out.

Spoiler

Every single member of his harem participated in multiple sections of the War against the Parasites, yet despite the ridiculously high-risk group battles not a single one of them ever died. Similarly, after the initial invasion that killed Ian, a mentor to Seol, no one else of his friends died... despite being at war against overwhelming odds.

[collapse]

Overall, a well written and enticing beginning, but likely due to its harem nature requiring that every moderately attractive female character be kept alive, the novel is prevented from reaching the earth-high place among the stars (6/5) it sets out for.

Honestly, this novel is pretty damn good until after the arden valley incident, after that MC just met strong af Army Commander, lost then awakening than won, it's so tr*sh that he didn't look like he developed any thing. From the beginning MC development is pretty good, but after around chap 300 that the author looked like he forgot that shit. I wanted to throw my two cents into this. I was a bit reluctant to read this at first, but I saw the manhwa pop up several times so I finally decided to give the manhwa a read when season 1 finished. The manhwa and the light novel have a pretty even pace and the story details weren't lost too much in the manhwa adaptation, so it was a quick and easy way to get into the story when I wasn't sure if I wanted to devote hours of time... more>> reading the novel.

The read was pretty good right from the start. I wasn't too interested in the story to begin with because I don't really like tr*sh or slag characters, but the MC Seol quickly breaks out of those characteristics. Seol is completely average in every way. Average intelligence, average body, average skills. Only two things make him special, his special "power" that he doesn't know how to use properly, and the "feelings" from his future self that get sent back in time. (This isn't a spoiler, this is background laid out in the first few chapters). So Seol ends up doing a lot of s*upid things because he can't utilize his advantages optimally and he is otherwise super ordinary.

Seol's best quality is his MC trait of being super hard working. Because of the strong feelings from his future self, he has a strong desire to get stronger and be prosperous in Paradise, the other world he visits. Of course, Seol has a bunch of other really annoying traits early on, but he starts to grow out of those as the story progresses. There will be entire character growth arcs dedicated to Seol changing certain bad habits. He is constantly self reflecting and thinking "I only survived this because of my special power or because of luck" and he works to get stronger so he doesn't have to rely on the plot armor.

Speaking of plot armor, there are a few parts of the plot that don't completely make sense in the beginning. Some of it gets explained later on, some of it you just need to infer through context clues, and some things seem to be subtly abandoned. I think overall, the plot in the first 100 chapters or so is more about Seol coming into himself as a member of Paradise, and it isn't until later that the nuances of the world and story are clearer. If you can't stand a story that has weird or contradictory logic, then you might not be able to even get through the first 50 chapters, let alone the first 100 or so. The good thing though is that the pace of the story is pretty quick. The chapters are pretty long and the arcs are quick. The story doesn't stagnate.

Now let me address the other thing that made me super hesitant to read this in the first place. The harem. I am a female and I personally don't like reading the novels where women throw themselves at the men and the author exaggerates the narration about their bodies. On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being teen friendly and 10 being p*rn, this is like a 3, a 4 at most. Nothing is explicitly talked about and the descriptions of women are usually kept pretty tame, only occasionally mentioning that the woman has big ti*s or is super beautiful. There are 3 things I think the story could go without, but they're sprinkled throughout the story for comedic effect and it doesn't bother me in general.

Spoiler
  • The bear panty joke with Agnes
  • Ian being a titty lover
  • Seol shoving his face into breasts when he sleeps
[collapse]

On the harem front, Seol jokes around with the various female characters, and some of them openly pursue him, but so far, most everything has been platonic. S*x is introduced as a very casual act in Paradise, and Seol seems to accept that in the beginning, but as the story goes on, the author seems to have changed him a bit so he no longer accepts the advances of various women. Overall, each woman seems to accept that if they were to seriously get into a relationship with Seol, the other women would have to be included. Seol himself, due to the circumstances the author added later on, is a dunce when it comes to relationships. It's frustrating that every new female ally gets added to this "harem", but it is all tolerable (as a female reader) because Seol isn't pursuing them nor is he really messing around with them. <<less

Well the novel has a lot of great points. The MC's character development is good since the author delves into his Earth story quite a bit, where he's a tr*sh. There seems to be justification for the MC being dense romance wise, but that comes in at 300+ chapters, and frankly it's just an excuse for the author to give MC a harem. In that respect, it's really frustrating. Also there's far too much of plot armor. MC keeps getting amazing items and skills one after another. That kind of... more>> ruins a story which is otherwise relatable. On the plus side, the fights are great and well explained. Overall worth reading. <<less
