This novel can be compared to 2HA, as in both the MC (gong) used to be bad to the ML (shou) in his past life, but then gets reincarnated as his past self, from before he's done all that evil, and gets to redo it all, making it up to the person he loves.
Sounds like Dongfang (...) should therefore be an interesting read, no? Well, it isn't, however much I wanted it to be.
Firstly, the MC - Yang Lianting (YLT) - and this is the most angering difference between it and 2HA - used to be a real scumbag to DFB (Dongfang Bubai) in his past life *despite knowing perfectly well DFB was in love with him*. In fact, YLT banked on it, milking it for all its worth, with absolutely no regard for DFB's wellbeing/feelings/sanity. Reading him recount the past it took me haf the novel just to get past my dislike of this character.
Secondly, Dongfang. Sadly, however badass he were, it is all being annihilated by The Power of Shou. Because he might be the most powerful cultivator in the world, cruel and cunning, but we have to remember he IS a shou. God forbid he has a strong, commanding presence! He is supposed to be the weak *woman* after all! Therefore, whenever LYT is nearby, he flips a switch and instantly the ONLY adjectives that the narrator deems to describe Dongfang with are: submissive, meek, with limpid eyes, watery eyes, hazy eyes, expression covered with a layer of watery vapour, soft body, suple body, thin frame, thin waist, fragile body... it goes on and ON. And then on top of that, you get literal paragraphs every few pages like clockwork describing how stunningly beautiful dongfang is. Over. and. over. and OVER. again.
Thirdly, if you were to extract all the paragraphs talking about nothing but Dongfang's beauty, ones musings on their undying love for the other, their mutual declarations of love and romantic promises, as well as LYT's self face-slapping about how badly he treated Dongfang in his past life.. over and over (I mean, deservededly so, don't get me wrong, but reading this over and over every few pages.. it gets old FAST).. if you remove ALL of that, then I don't know if this novel would be half as long as it is. Perhaps even less. The sheer amount of text I skimmed over is just ridiculous and still I felt irritated reading repetetive tripe dialogue over and over again.
So at some point I just couldn't take it any more, couldn't keep reading just to be able to mark it as "read" on my kindle app.. enough time wasted.
So, if you're hesitant, just give it a few chapters. If you find the novel irritating as I had, feel free do drop it, secure in the knowledge that it does NOT, in fact, get better.
And the story focuses on the main characters without mixing with lots of side characters. So even though there are not many chapters, it gives the fullest about the characters as well as their tale. These two showed a kind of the envious love. By the way, when I was reading the last paragraph of the last chapter, COINCIDENTALLY, YouTube that randomly playing songs, played the chorus of "A thousand years" song ! It amazed me. This made my heart melt 🫠. I am sure that I will never forget this feeling. If you have a chance, try to play this song when you read the last chapter.
I didn't know, going into reading this, that both the ML and MC were character from Smiling, Proud Wanderer. But, honestly it didn't really matter. I felt like even without prior knowledge of SPW, it's easy to go along and understand everything the plot has to offer. Though there are a few errors with explanation of plot points, I'm assuming thats just because this is technically "fanfiction".
I have one critique, and it has to do with the ML (Dongfang Bubai). He is the Invincible East, yet in the first time where the MC (Yang Lianting) is threatened, he has the ability to do nothing. It was reiterated that he was the strongest, the best in the world, yet he was bested by someone (with no reputation) in an instant. I understand that it was to move the plot along, but it completely disregarded previous aspects of the ML's character.
Besides that, I truly loved this novel. It was all about romance, redemption and realization. "Not knowing what you have until you lose it" is one of my favorite tropes and it was done so well here. The MC realized his mistakes from his first lifetime after losing his most precious person. When he comes back, ready to do anything and everything for the ML, it's so wholesome and fluffy. Despite having a few revenge scenes, this is more of a feel-good novel that illustrates a completely dedicated love.
(I'm ignoring in this that there is a slightly toxic image of castrated males or males who don't have certain features considered "manly". I don't personally agree with that, especially as that turned the ML into a more "feminine" character, as defined in the novel. It wasn't brought up too much and isn't necessarily a big part of the plot. I just didn't find it correct that the ML's castration and excess yin energy lead to him wanting to wear dresses and makeup. That's a completely normal desire, with no relation to gender, g**itals or identity.)
This gets five stars from me. Short, sweet, and so wholesome. I would definitely recommend!
