Just as it says on the tin — a list of my favourite BL horror/unlimited flow novels that (1) kept me on the edge of my seat, and (2) have MCs with personalities containing more depth than a soy sauce dish.

I'm the type of reader who isn't too fussed about romance because I rate novels based on their plots (i.e. how well-written each instance is, are they unique, do they make sense, etc), so the romance in some of these novels may not be mind-blowing or anything.

P.S. All the novels' MCs are bottoms (shous).

⭕ Another one of my absolute favourites, and also another relatively niche novel. Each instance originates from a real-life painting, which players are then pulled into.

⭕ Each 'painting' is really unique, and they're all centred on serious themes that really make you think. Despite the novel's supernatural core, the instance antagonists aren't really traditional 'monsters' or ghosts, but that's what makes them even more scary. This novel has one of the very best series of instances by far in the genre.

⭕ I also adore the MC. He's the textbook example of a grower, who slowly but surely develops into a capable teammate who acts as the heart of the group. He's not the smartest, but he's quick-witted in his own way, and his greatest strength is his ability to maintain a positive and determined mindset even in the face of unfathomable horrors, which in turn motivates his fellow players to keep striving forwards — a rare character setting for an MC in this genre.

✖️ But seriously, when I mean he's a grower, I really mean it: he does a lot of s*upid sh*t in the first arc, to the point where I originally stopped reading the novel because I hated how he was so dumb. But trust me when I say he gets a lot better after the first arc.

⭕ Another highlight of this novel is MC's relationship with his best friend, who he has known since childhood. They trust each other unconditionally, and are each other's strength; their banter is also hilarious, especially how MC's best friend (who's straight) always yells 'damn gay' after he's subjected to MC and ML's PDA haha.

✖️ The relationship between MC and ML is sorely lacking. The MC falls for ML first, but his love at first sight is only really because of ML's looks. I also particularly dislike how MC would doggedly try to woo ML even after the latter stated explicitly that he didn't like it. ML is also pretty flat: we get to know MC's character as we read, but ML, handsome and smart that he is, is kinda just...there. If romance is a must for you, this novel may not be your cup of tea — but if you're like me and romance is just an optional bonus to the plot, I definitely recommend this novel anyway. <<less
