The Earth is Online

Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

This is a fun puzzle/survival series with sci-fi and special abilities. It has a fast pace and is difficult to put down (I lost so much sleep until I finished this series!). It has exciting action and tension, and the writer kills off named characters. The protagonist halo is still prominent, but it's less obtrusive than in other series. A few characters have some depth, but their character development isn't obvious. They aren't flat characters, but they aren't full of depth either. I love the mystery.

If you do not like... more>> boys' love, then you shouldn't have a problem with this series. If you are looking for romance or smut, this is definitely not the series to scratch that itch. This is not a yaoi, and I'm not even sure if it qualifies as a shounen-ai. There is a gay couple, but romance is not focused on in this series to the point it would have been fine without any romance at all. In the entire series,
Spoiler

I think the MC and ML only kiss twice, and the first kiss is in chapter 207. There is one s*x scene, but it's not explicit; there is only enough description to let readers know the two characters are making love. The flirting is so subtle, it's easy to overlook.

[collapse]

The setting is interesting, and the series comes to a close well. Everything comes in full circle, but there are still several unanswered questions at the end, including continents that do not appear to exist in the story at all.

Spoiler

Why is Africa missing?! Whatever happened to Australia?! The Earth is divided into ten zones, which include parts of Asia, China as its own zone, Europe, Russia as its own zone, the USA as its own zone, and the Americas. I guess Canada, Mexico, and South America could be squished into "the Americas, " but then what is the point of having the US in the middle of their zone? Shouldn't Canada get its own zone if the US does? South America is an entire continent, so why doesn't it have its own zone? There is no African zone, and no African people clear any instances or appear in the story. This is a GIGANTIC CONTINENT, so what the heck happened? It can't just disappear.

Australia is much smaller, but it also doesn't make any appearances. Did it get grouped up with one of the Asian zones or what? Even if the zones are based on populations, this is a little insensible.

I assume that anyone in Antarctica got killed off early on since there are so few people there.

[collapse]

There are also a few peculiarities, such as
Spoiler

this entire event is about making the human race evolve. That said, the MC and ML are gay, so they won't be passing their genes onto anyone unless some new technology comes about. Furthermore, the consciousness of the universe is more like a god than anything else. Why would it go through this trouble? The strength of humanity lies in intelligence, working as a group, and technology, but the people have to survive without their greatest strengths. Technology doesn't advance in this series has most likely regressed substantially.

[collapse]

There are also some issues with the writing where key plot details are not revealed to the reader. For instance,
Spoiler

all of the animals disappear. This isn't mentioned at all until they reappear later on. I thought people were hunting for food off-screen in other teams the whole time. Furthermore, technology gets cut off, and people have no internet connection anymore. Isn't this pretty critical information? Although it appears, that no one can even turn on electrical lights, phones still have charge more than six months later and can continue to tell time. These discrepancies are never explained or stated.

[collapse]

One big problem is the translation quality for any English readers. It is good enough to mostly figure out what is going on, but there are places where sentences are clearly missing and rules just don't make sense. It is machine-translated, and it looks like autocorrect attacked and change important words into nonsensical ones. There are grammatical errors every chapter, and sentences have nouns and other words missing. Species of animals and characters change within a chapter. Men become women, and women become men frequently based on the pronouns. This is the quality expected from most machine translations, but it can be irritating and confusing to read. That said, it is clear enough to understand most of what is going on aside from many of the rules, but the rules can be understood by how the characters play.

Overall, I'd recommended it as an exciting puzzle/survival action series. <<less

To be honest, I’d put this novel at maybe a 4.5. It gave me everything I wanted in a plot-centered, post-apocalyptic novel. The puzzles were all very intriguing, the writing intelligent, and while the MCs were powerful, they weren’t so OP that nothing could ever befall them.

In terms of quality, it blows many other novels out of the water: it’s unpredictable but logical, with every event catching your interest. Little hints are also scattered throughout, and I love how much effort the author put into making this a solid novel.... more>> Something I always appreciate is the author remembering MC was a librarian: too often, these initial conditions are just excuses for the MC to become OP. Not here. He has the genuine personality and values of a librarian, and I really appreciate how he truly cares about preserving technology, culture, and history.

I also loved the dynamic between the MC and ML. No overbearing possessiveness here, and with a natural, healthy, slow-burn relationship. They’re such a powerful couple as well that bring out the strengths in each other. Love it love it love it.

In the end, I only deduct 0.5 points for the lack of character development: characters were still strong and not archetypal, but I do wish they could be fleshed out more with their individual arcs. However, I understand that this is a plot centered novel, so I don’t really mind.

If you want a novel that will finally make your brain cells light up, this one’s for you. <<less

Post-apocalyptic but no zombie, thick mystery, fall into slow burn BL, no papapa

The plot is honestly heavy because it involve a lot of action and trying to crack down the mystery

There is a lot of point and arc that made me scream internally 'is it not enough for them to suffer this much' through it

Plot: 5/5

Characters: 5/5

Romance: 3/5

Overall: 4.8/5

Trust me THIS STORY IS WORTH IT. Amazing job done by the translator as well. The plot makes you never lose interest. The plot keeps on thickening and only gets more and more interesting.

The summary doesn't explain ANYTHING. Trust me you won't get it till you give it a try.

Also, even though the romance was really slow burning and the book wasn't really focused on it, it doesn't really deter anything.

All in all, this is a good read

Wow, this author is just brilliant. The plot and the arcs are so well-crafted and ingeniously interesting that it is incredible. The additional element of childhood fantasy with a twist also livens up this story and makes it much more intriguing.

This isn't a story that focuses on character development, although the characters aren't bad at all; the highlight is really the riveting and complex plot. An incredible read! It's also laugh-out-loud funny at times. It's really not horror, but more logic-testing.

Characters: 5/5

LOVE our main characters!! They're both strong and decisive,... more>> appropriately cold without being cruel. Note this is very shounen ai, there's just two fade to black scenes. It's clear throughout the story that romance exists, but don't avoid this story due to the BL elements. They get together at like, chapter 200+. Although I like their relationship and the great tacit understanding, I felt it was a bit overboard tbh. Especially their story in the extra, idk it just made it feel to "predestined" and feels mocking of the experiences they went through to develop those bonds. Bonus points because ML isn't that cold yandere, but rather someone who will occasionally crack cold jokes (that I find hilarious).

Side characters are also great. I will say again, this is the apocalyptic setting, and characters do change appropriately to reflect that, but this story is very plot-focused. Basically, they start off pretty smart and keep being smart enough. Therefore, most of the story isn't reeeeally showing much character development, but the characters start off pretty good anyway. I also liked the side characters quite a bit (although that extra about Deer's family really let me down lol). And I want to know about Ning Zheng!!! What about that twin sister?????

And even without character development, there are so many interesting characters! The setting that pays homage to childhood figures really give the author a lot of interesting personalities to work with. Although honestly I felt that it wouldn't have been difficult for the author to give them more depth; that last gaze at the sun by circus leader really struck my heart. He's my favourite!

Plot: 5/5

10/5, seriously. The puzzles and survival games we see are all very artfully designed, and the story flows well throughout. It's clear the author made plans from the beginning to the end, foreshadowing all kinds of twists and turns in advance. This is especially easy to tell based on the props that were remembered and used; props from early on in the story became crucial in the final arcs. It's pretty amazing. I will say some of them were less interesting than others, and author def went overboard with the impossible detective work, but still great.

Spoiler

I just can't help thinking that actually, MC should've cleared things slower. It's because of the power disparity that so many people died in the last "great war"... There was also SO much potential to explore the Tower's backstory when they had the characters stare at the sun that they usually never get to see, but unfortunately that didn't happen at all.

[collapse]

For a story at this level, it's quite incredible there are so few plot holes. The entire story was SUPER interesting; all 200+ chapters kept me entranced from beginning to end. The chapters are quite long too. All in all, amazing and I highly recommend it!!!

My favourite arcs are bookshelves, Mario, Strange Circus, Turkey, Iron Shoemaker, Customs.

Writing & Translation: 5/5

Thank you to the translators & editors for their hard work!!!! Minimal mistakes, good sentence flow, thank you!!

I can't even begin to describe how much I loved this novels, at first I was skeptical about the scifi genre and the fact that this story is high IQ (?). But I couldn't be more happy to have tried it, I totally recomend, summarizing:

    • Sometimes can be very hard to keep following the main character, but it's also very exciting see then discovering things.
    • Even the fight scenes (which I usually don't read) were awesome!
    • The main couple have almost zero romantic interactions, considering the novel length, usually I don't like that... HOWEVER I didn't really mind it because the plot kept me entertained and when there were romantic interactions they were so especial that I couldn't help but smile.
    • Don't read it if you're not in the mood or if you're tired.
    • About s*x scenes
      Spoiler

unfortunately is not explicit, it actually ~and may I say~ sadly uses guns metaphors the whole time

most ambitious alice in wonderland-ish novel I've ever read. Its just like anime where you find the hook awesome but unfortunately there's too much filler. However fu wenduo and mo tang duo was good but would've been nice if they added more scenes for their interactions.

btw I liked ning and fu wensheng too

It's really best I was read. From the first chapters I realized that I really like the main character. Minor characters also good. (And can die heh) This is survival games based on famous fairy tails. (Good idea I didn't see similar) Games also consists of detective work where you should use your brain and solve puzzles and part where you abilities (super powers) and physical strength or skills of fighting. MC has pretty fraudulent ability (in my opinion) but he can't use it fully. He has very clever and... more>> flexible mind and fast learning and growing. Many times I even forgotten that he is protagonist. Also I love his composure and equanimity in every situation. I of course love ML too. Their feelings regarding each other doesn't very difficult because in story is enough pain and cruelty (at least to me for sure). They originally love each other and don't be suffering from this aspect. Best thing in this all its a plot I love it. People who experience this together, friendship and trust. I remember many characters and everyone special and alive person. I read this for some days and it's was interesting I couldn't stop. It's has current purpose and slowly they reached it. (Currently survive and pass the black towers) . Main couple sweet and nice. Recommend all who love action and horror BL. Really qualitatively story with good plot. <<less

All time favourite!

This story is quite gripping. The intrigue will make you want to continue reading till the end.

It starts with these Black Towers which had appeared out of nowhere suddenly activating.

... more>> What follows are various survival challenges where the stakes get higher and higher.

The apocalyptic background for the first time to me feels real.

The MC Tang Mo is also quick to adapt. He is smart but also knows when to take a step back. He doesn't strive to be heroic as a lot of other MCs do but he still does his best to help as much as he can.

The challenges are well described. You can always visualize everything happening in motion. There is not much focus on romance but as the story progresses you can see them relying on each other and mutually developing feelings. <<less

A must read!! (♡˙︶˙♡) In my humble opinion this is one of the best novels out there. The chapters are action packed and also puzzle filled, add a little bit of romance and mind games and voila!! (*´╰╯`๓) ♬ In the romance aspect, it does take a while for the two protagonists to get together (but it is worth it). I really enjoyed them interacting with each other, and their relationship is realistic.

This novel is like a breath of fresh air. It doesn't follow the common trope of the shou (uke)... more>> being overly reliant on the gong (seme). All the characters aren't OP, which I quite enjoy from time to time. The characters all have faults/weaknesses which makes them more 3D.

Definitely give this a go, you won't regret it!! (*˘︶˘*).。.:*♡ <<less

What I would consider the best read ever. This novel is worth anyone's time especially the plot, the plot twists, characters and their development, the games and the villains.

If you are looking for romance...... this would not be it, there is love and fluff between the MC and ML but it took until chapter 105+ for a somewhat ambiguous confession and a kiss. It took so long but the wait is so worth it.

As an avid reader this is one CN novel that I would say is well thought out... more>> and well written than any of the other ones i've read. Every chapter detail, character, instance, is connected and has meaning in the story and its beautifully written.

Kudos to the author and if anyone is doubting with the long chapters, you won't even notice it after you start reading cuz its that good.

Edit:

BTW the tag Yaoi is misleading and incorrect because it is not yaoi/danmei it is shounen-ai ONLY and for some reason I can't edit the tags so yea... <<less

Honestly, it's so good. I absolutely love the plot and how they have to solve instances. It's so interesting to read about them solving the puzzles and mysteries. This story has great world building and I thought a lot of characters were interesting, not just the two leads.

This novel is so freaking exciting and made my blood boil in excitement multiple times. The couple is very nice and if you're not a BL fan I still think you can read this and have a good time because it's just that... more>> good. Also, the MC and ML are pretty equal in strength and have their own weaknesses/strengths which is what I love. It isn't just the shou MC riding on gong ML's tail like a lot of other novels.

Although some instance rules are pretty confusing and can take some time to understand (I didn't even try to ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯). But I still think it's great. There's also some action here and there.

Basically, read this. Just do it. You won't regret it <<less

It's a fantastic read!

The plot and the writing are crazy good. Everything in this novel is fun and exciting. Both ML and MC are so smart (that I feel dumb sometimes), and they're super cool throughout the story. It's like you already know from their god-like characters that no one can harm them, but still couldn't help but get excited and thrilled as the story progressed.

Seriously, I'd recommend this to anyone finding a good novel, not just limited to BL readers.

I hadn't been this entertained by a story in such a long time. The translation quality is excellent. The plot always moves along so nothing is stagnant. The missions/games are super creative and unlike anything I've read, really engaging too. Some people might find the romance to be too slow or little, but I'm fine with it because what stood out to me more than the romance is the world-building. I really was pulled into the world and characters. What's fantastic is the story doesn't pretend to be intelligent but... more>> truly is an intelligent novel. The explanations aren't made up gibberish and actually make sense once things are revealed. Truly, a gem of a novel. <<less
