Clearing an Isekai with the Zero-Believers Goddess – The Weakest Mage among the Classmates (WN)

Makoto Takatsuki is a normal high school student and a hardcore RPG player.

However, “normal” goes out the window when his whole class is involved in a bus crash and whisked away to another world! Powerful gods rule this strange new land of magic and monsters, and every newcomer is blessed with strong stats and unique skills.

Well, not quite. Makoto’s stats turn out to be pathetic, and his skills are super weak compared to his classmates’…he’s even stuck as an apprentice mage. Worse still, he’s given only ten years to live!

Luckily, Makoto soon meets a minor goddess named Noah, who appears in Makoto’s dreams and asks him to become her first believer. With the help of Noah’s blessings and a divine weapon, Makoto seeks to become strong enough to rescue his goddess from the dungeon where she’s been trapped.

By training hard and using his weak skills in unorthodox ways, Makoto proves that, even when playing on hardcore difficulty, an RPG player always makes it to the end!

Man I dont understand why this has a rating 4.3. The fights are boring, the normal thing, since he is a magician, there is no feeling of improving or something since the guy is hopelessly weak (except his magic) having to discard another factor that would interest, at least one would hope that the conversations or relationships would be interesting but no, it is just common and cheap Japanese cliche. They had to spend a lot of chapters for something and at most they are kisses and "comic" common situations... more>> that only appear in any s*upid cliche harem trope that ruin the atmosphere. This novel does not have any redeeming quality so far, at most the only interesting thing is the history of the worldbuilding which isn't a big deal either and nothing else.

Edit: Crybabies are the ones who get salty with unfavorable criticism like the one above. I don't doubt that worldbuilding is interesting, in fact it is the most interesting thing in the novel and the only reason why I reached 319 chapters. <<less

A WN that has been written pretty well with solid world building. I must say that although this is just a WN - a free version for author to write draft, but the author writing skill is already good enough for a LN version. Believe me, I have seen worst than this many times, their script and plot is just a mess.
Despite some mistake here and there but overall it's a very enjoyable ride. If you guys want to read a more well-done and completed version of this WN, which meant the LN, please consider buying it at J-Novel website, their translation is top notch and the flow is good too.
5/5, would beat again if I could. J-Novel, just give me all those Shinja LNs !!

It is a really enjoyble story, the protagonist falls a bit on the "cardboard-kun" side and the harem is really frustrating, but the worldbuilding, characters and magic system off sets the bad points

To be honest, I'm kind of annoyed with the reviews of late on this website for this story. They haven't been about the story so much as the authors inclusion of Yuri in a very recent chapter. First of all, blatant Yuri content only occurred in one chapter, very late into the story. Then the author, upon recieving massive amounts of criticism from reviews, apologised and wrote he won't be including it again. I admit the writing wasn't that great for the scene but it is not out of no... more>> where. There were plenty of hints that the author was going that way with those characters throughout the story up to now.

As for the story as a whole, this isn't the kind of story where you think too hard about what's going on. It's a cute romp through an isekai. MC gets a harem formed as the story progresses but starts out being a bit too naive (par for the course from Japan) to do anything. Then, when he lit gets to the point relationships could progress, he is usually interupted. The story starts off seeming a little dark but quickly turns into the Bofuri of isekai novels. Most power struggles are taken care of accidentally by MC via luck, connections or divine intervention.

So yeah, not much is new but it's a refreshing read and has plenty of chapters so it'll keep you busy. The translation is quite good as well and sometimes you can find the images linked in the comments which certainly helps. If you need to pass the time, I recommend giving it a try. <<less

In short, this is a stereotypical by the numbers japanese isekai story. Only slightly interesting part is world building and background. This is basically junk food to kill some time when you are bored and have nothing else decent to read.

As usual with the genre "Weak to Strong" tag is a lie. If MC requires power to solve something he will 100% pull a deus ex machina power up. Then we get a third party pov chapter explaining how MC looked weak before but how amazing he is solving the... more>> unsolvable problem of the moment with his power.

Author doesn't really understand the concept of foreshadowing. It's either pov character not-explaining his plan by saying something like "Here is my plan" without any details or hinting something really obviously and treating later reveal as something surprising.

Harem part is stale. Misunderstandings and interrupts could have been funny if it was once or twice (or 10 times) but every slice of life segment is same joke. MC getting targeted by females without any action (first real kiss was somewhere around chapter 185). Suspension of disbelief goes only so far when 2 of the harem members are practically ready to jump on MC, clearly explained that multiple times, goddess in question and MC's best friend who both can mind read clearly pointed it out. I would still be willing to let go of this if MC was someone affected by the circumstances but that's not the case.

Almost nobody have any character development so far. Any changes are binary flip (women deciding to join MCs harem or men suddenly becoming fans of MC). Almost nobody has any personal future goals, aspirations they want to realize. <<less

So, to sum this up, this is essentially Konosuba, where author actually has the balls to not negate all progress with a punchline. Relationships advance, Megumin-like girl actually learns how to be much more versatile and actually do something other than just nuke it. Protagonist's reputation actually grows.

Pretty ok other than grabbing a new girlfriend every arc, which I have mixed feelings about. Having multiple romance interests are fine, but it just gets frustrating when a new one is added to the roster, only bloating the amount of dialogue whenever EVERYONE is present. They're typically as well utilised as they could be, but it's hard to get invested in any of their characters when they will inevitably be given an ever smaller cut of the dialogue pie as more f*cking tumble in.

The power system is pretty ok,... more>> if filled with questions of "how do skills work?", but that's just a part of the territory.

One of my complaints is that nobody really seems to mind when anyone dies, or when killing people. It might make sense for the world, but it's never really addressed at all by the isekai'd characters, who up until this point were living peacefully. People tend to only get upset by death when it's related to the main cast, and even then immediately sober up as soon as it's convinient.

The translation however, is very well written, and the arcs are interesting and enjoyable. I just hope they dont end up bloating their cast even further, because it is getting harder and harder to care about any individual character besides the main 3. <<less

MC is supposed to be a nerd and played a lot of games. Then someone can explain me why he is so dense and incompetent? Girls literally slamming their pu*sy in his face and he is still there wondering if they are friends. Pretty bad. It's literally the same as every other amateur isekai novel so far.

Main character somehow starts off underpowered as hell (it's also an isekai trope to be either overpowered or underpowered after being transported), meets another mis-fit magician who turns out to be an elf girl (love interest #1 out of 3 so far, and yes, they're all majorly romantically attracted to him but everyone's acting as if they were children when it comes to romance), stumbles his way to victories with methods that for some reason a world... more>> that's been around for apparently 15 million years has never thought of using (like using water to drown enemies, not really a secret strat), and ends up succeeding beyond his wildest dreams. Congratulations, I just summarized the whole novel for you.

There are tiny plot twists here and there, but the twists straighten themselves out quickly and the main story resumes its linear path to the upcoming predictable ending. No spoilers, but trust me: you won't be surprised while reading this novel, as it is all within the scope of your most basic novel reader's imagination and not really well-constructed.

There's a lot of tropes here that you've seen before. Crazy strong love interest that wields a pikopiko hammer as a weapon, scenes where one girl is caught doing something completely innocent with the MC and the rest of the love interests misunderstand, the MC being given great political power on a whim with a system that gets created by the author to further advance the plot once it's supposedly needed, crazy monsters that takes everyone all their strength to defeat yet the supposedly weak MC manages to defeat them easily, an MC that never gets angry and is given a skill to ensure that he basically can't ever feel such emotions so he ends up being too nice... Literally run-of-the-mill, and I'm angry I fell for it.

If you enjoy generic isekai novels with block-headed protagonists that somehow end up with harems and everything just works out for him all the time forever, then this is for you. If you prefer an -even minimally- compelling story, look elsewhere. I personally prefer a compelling story, but I've already started reading this, so I guess I'll finish it for closure purposes. <<less

A surprisingly nice read in a jungle of bad isekai being churned out these days.

Makoto is a simple, mildly funny and a good guy. He's mildly dense which is acceptable as this gives the time for the relationship to develop. The surrounding characters are nicely done, with enough time devoted for their development. A lot of focus is given to character development and the pov change helps us understand the characters better and appreciate their actions. There hasn't been much romantic development but the harem is building around and Makoto... more>> is very well aware of it. The skills he has are very normal, but he takes power from people around him, which is a refreshing take on isekai where everything is served to the MC at the beginning.

A few things I wished were there and should have been focused on would be -

    • A deeper world building, particularly the monsters, etc need to be defined a bit more vividly. There is a lack of sense of danger in the novel which makes you wish for some tense moments.
    • The illustrations are somewhat less and again don't help in imagining the fights, which diminishes the world imagination. Also, the character designs are on the childish side, which could have been improved.
************************************************************************************************

(Update)

So, I feel like the story went a bit downhill in the Sun kingdom arc. It's great with all the confession and all, but now his "clear mind" hinders any further development. There is a lack of "interactions" between the main members, which again are needed for better fleshing of the characters. Apart from that there have been many small subplots being rushed and the readers are just told the end result.

I do hope the LN fixes those issues, 4.5/5 as of now. <<less

The good: Good translation quality, an entertaining read, a few twists on the setting compared to the standard 'I was the weakest one in my class' premise. The main female leads are decently developed. There's some romantic progress that occurs during the series. Overall, while it doesn't excel in anything in particular, most aspects are done well.

The bad: Some pacing issues. What might take a few chapters in other stories gets compressed into a single chapter here, or the wrap up for smaller events gets skipped completely. This roughness feels... more>> like stuff that would be smoothed over in the LN version.

The ugly: It's a harem series and the author doesn't seem to know what to do with it, so... it stalls. The earlier parts show some awareness on the part of the MC and hints that he's being intentionally dense, but transitions to being outright dense and/or running away from progressing the relationship.

Verdict: It really feels like diet Sevens. Slow power growth of the protagonist, based on acquiring powerups from time to time, with a slowly growing harem. Sevens does it better when it comes to the MC's character development, the growth of the relationships, and addressing harem interpersonal relationships.

Overall, it's an entertaining story that I will follow. I really hope the harem stops growing because the relationships being stalled out as they are is already frustrating enough and any new characters that they start introducing at this point can't have as meaningful a relationship with the MC as the current ones. On the other hand, I've given up hope that the current relationships will see meaningful progress as it currently stands since progress has been pretty much dead from volume 5 onward. The author probably needs to delay those until certain major plot points have been reached. <<less

My first impression when I read the synopsis:

Again? A weak MC which is actually OP and he even received a help from a Goddess. Isn't it too convenient? I bet it's some low quality isekai again where the MC is actually the author's self insert. And surely the MC will again collect girls like pokemon here and there.

My impression after reading this:

A very good story (isekai). This is not a masterpiece, but it's enjoyable enough, that I want to continue reading this. I gave this 5 star for that reason.... more>> At least for me, I almost didn't have complain on everything in this story.

This is a light story, but not too light that the character's heads are full of flowers. Because of this, other people who are looking for a more serious, more flesh out character, story, magic system, and progress might find a fault when reading this.

The MC is weak. A very low mana. This is because his stats are just so low. Even strong people will have the same impression when seeing the MC at first time. But the MC has a very high proficiency, which allows him to have a greater control on magic. Well, a summary of his abilities are like, in right situation, they are OP, in normal situation, he won't be able to use them, in grave situation he will think a desperate way to use them.

Again, this is a decent story that I'm satisfied of. There are gods, demons, oracles, decent hero classmate, a guy best friend you can count on, a not so damn fast harem building, a clear but high goal, a smart way of using skills, and others.

If you're looking for something to read, if you miss reading a decent and relaxing isekai with a serious (but not too much) development, I highly recommend this to you.

Update: After reading ahead, this became one of my top 10 novels. The development is very surprising and exciting. A lot of new characters are introduced, and there's a lot of truth that was revealed. I love the story, it reminds me of "A Wild Last Boss Appear" which is another masterpiece. <<less

An isekai JP novel - as soon as you got that phrase you wouldn't expect a novel that is incredibly unique.

The novel started off with a very interesting prologue - with the characters exhibiting both interesting and cliche responses. This immediately pulled me into the novel as I thought perhaps the author might explore the intricate nature between psychology of the characters who will be experiencing an isekai.

As the title of the novel states: the main character is the weakest character and has weak but unique skills compared to his... more>> classmates. One of this skills is called "Clear Mind" which enables the protagonist to maintain a stable mindset during his activities. The fact that he could adjust the amount of how stable he is was intriguing - and the author cleverly uses it for comedic purposes.

Here comes the common problems with JP novels that delve into fantastical RPG genres: lack of character depth and diversity. Now, perhaps the author perfects it as he moves on - as I have only read up to the end of the first Arc. The characters introduced are - as usual - a bunch of females that revolve around the protagonist. Each female character has their own traits e.g. One is a drunkard while the other has pointy ears etc. While they are unique in their physical interactions towards the main character - they're inner personalities all seem the same. If the author decides to swap the names of all the female characters for just one chapter - I wouldn't know the difference. I am more disappointed in how the male characters are introduced. Conflicts are resolved too easily - there are no clashes of ego and if they are - the protagonist somehow is lacking one - and the other party befriends the protagonist in the next chapter.

While the worldbuilding seems interesting - I don't expect anything more than other isekais. For people who enjoy novels like this, I'd say it might be something nice to read once in awhile.

Edit: Don't pick this up. It's not worth slogging through the bad parts just to get a taste of what the novel could have been, before watching it promptly douse itself in gasoline and set itself on fire. Details below.

So, a couple points. Overall my impression of this novel had largely improved. It's still got all the problems outlined below, but many of them faded into the background a bit - like the idiotic and inconsistent skill thing. The personal relationships had been developing nicely, and it was very nice.... more>> My overall impression of the series had really improved recently.

However, all of that gets thrown away. The author decided it would be a great idea to throw the MC back in time all by himself. So... all the good bits of this story just got thrown into the tr*sh. I'm told the back-in-time arc is 50+ chapters and still on-going. I'm done.

As for rating... I don't know. First hundred chapters, barely 3 stars if I'm being a little nice. Next hundred chapters, maybe barely 4 stars if I'm again being a little nice. And after that... just no. No stars. I guess I could average that out as 2.3 and then round down to 2 stars. But really, that's just a token recognition for the section that was kinda good.

But I also want to give a 1 to help ensure people don't waste their time with this. At least a "proper" 1-star would be such a mess that it would be obvious halfway through chapter 1. Instead this novel will tease you along and waste your time, which is arguably worse.

I can't decide. Coin flip says to give it a 2.

Original review below:

This is kind of an odd novel. There's honestly a lot of things that are just somewhere between subpar and just bad about it. At the same time, it does one thing pretty well though certainly far from perfectly. So I'm a little surprised the opinions here don't seem to be more split. Anyway, details!

... Actually details in a second. First, translation quality. It's pretty rough. If it was any worse I don't know that I would actually be reading this still. The grammar is alright or even pretty good, but I'd say more sentences than not are awkward as hell. There will probably be no point in your reading that you will ever think you might be reading something from a native speaker. Despite the occasional word that is either misused entirely or just used in a way that a native speaker never would, almost all of it is very understandable. It is fairly rare that a sentence is just unintelligible and I can't make heads or tails of it no matter what I try.

So, details! The good thing is the relationships between the characters. If that's enough for you in a novel, this might be worth checking out. Yeah the MC is a dense little bastard, but he's not inhumanely so. More than a few hints are dropped that also indicate the MC is pretending to be a little denser than he actually is - he's just awkward and feigning ignorance is a good way to avoid things. But don't get me wrong - he's still a Japanese MC. The characters around him are likable enough, and you actually get a decent number of fluffier moments with them. If that's enough to float your boat, then give it a shot. Though sometimes the author is lazy even in this aspect. He'll set up some s*upid cliche situation and then leave it was "and then he explained" before moving to the next scene. The situation itself might be mildly amusing, but actually seeing the explanation would both be funnier and more meaningful to the relationships - which is the only reason to read this.

Because everything else is pretty subpar. The world is almost as cookie-cutter as you get for this sort of novel. Some of the Gods bit are the closest thing to actually being interesting. It's not even that consistent, in two ways. First, things just change to fit the plot better. It's "the Four Great Nations" until plot demands that one "Great" nation is actually not even qualified to be a top-ranked noble house in the top nation. Secondly, in the sense that the author never seemed to think about how all the things he set up worked together. He basically just grabbed some real-world culture and smacked that down as the inspiration for some nation and then threw on some basic ideas for the current situations and histories and called it a day. No questions were asked if the histories would actually lead to the current situation. While the author does get into this kind of stuff a bit, it's usually over pretty quickly and you can just move on without worrying about it too much.

The worst thing by far is the skills system. It does the standard thing of just grabbing all the worst aspects of a video game skill system without taking any of the good parts. Just about whatever might be a skill. There's really no limits. Some of them can be taught. This is also probably the area where the s*upidity of the MC shines brightest - he intentionally learns a skill (maybe two?) but mostly just ignores learning anything more for no good reason. Anyway, they are pretty standard dull video-game-esque skills for the most part - though not entirely. The magic part is super weird. Skills seem to determine what magic can be accessed and mana amounts, but nothing else. However magic spells seem to be highly standardized and well known. But no explanation is ever given for why that is. The MC will just go off doing his usual practice routine for awhile and then suddenly bust out some new spell somehow that everybody knows and is amazed by. How did he learn it? Who knows. It's not part of his skills. It's not something he learned through any method mentioned. It just showed up and everybody else knows what it is. I think at the start of the novel this was actually better to some degree, but at any rate it quickly devolved to the above. But the fighting doesn't take over too much of the time, so again, you can kind of just bear with it and move it.

So... yeah. If you want or don't mind a side of forgettable plot and a spoonful of pitiful worldbuilding with your slightly dense yet overall nice fluffy main course, this might be worth a shot. At least providing you can also deal with the translation. <<less

If you are looking for a tr*sh type generic isekai, this is probably the best one you could ever hope to find.

Clearing an Isekai with the Zero-Believers Goddess – The Weakest Mage among the Classmates is a generic isekai story whereby the MC, Takatsuki Makoto, along with his other classmates, gets isekaied to another world to save that very world from an impending disaster - the revival of the Great Demon Lord.

Sounds generic right? However, what makes this novel stand out apart from the rest is its power progression.

The MC... more>> doesn't start overpowered like most generic isekais. In fact, he starts off as the weakest, with having little to no physical nor magical abilities (the author likes to keep mentioning his mana capacity is at 4), basic skills, and that he, no matter how much he train, could ever grow his stats or abilities. However, he overcomes adversities through using his wits and knowledge, as well as training more than anyone else to become more "proficient" at the very basic skills he is using.

Eventually, through all the hard work he put in, as well as having received assistance from external parties (I won't say who to prevent spoiling), he becomes really strong, a lot stronger than the people around him.

However, never at any point in this story did I feel like he was overpowered. While it is true that he kept getting stronger and stronger compared to the rest of his peers, so do his enemies. The key battles were never one-sided at all, so it never felt overbearing to read at any point in time. Power is relative after all. You can't really call a character overpowered if the enemy he faces is overpowered as well, can you?

World-building is fairly good, with the author keeping some of its mysterious elements while also expanding at a decent pace to make you more hooked into wanting to know more.

Romance, while not necessarily the main point of the story, is handled decently well, with his love interests having distinct and unique personalities and roles, and their interactions being comical and enjoyable to read.

If you are looking for a tr*sh isekai story to read, this is certainly the one for you, so please do check it out if you haven't. <<less

This JP novel is very addicting. The atmosphere never gets overboard. The action is well depicted. The pacing is smooth. Tension is loosely built on some scenes but it's main likeability lies in MC's progression. This is a very good MC to introduce this world and the characters aren't overbearing. It is light hearted and fun to read novel.

I've reread this so many times and I'm reading the LN again. LN story slightly changed so worth reading it again. I love this series so much! 4.2/5 as of this comment is well deserved. Its your typical weak to strong MC. My slight criticism for the WN (this might change in the LN possibly based on the authors comments regarding the WN ending) is that it felt like the story was building up to a certain ending (I'm not gonna spoil or even hint it) but last minute it... more>> was changed because the author had a change of heart. He did say as much and he acknowledged the feedback on his Twitter but I don't remember if he said something about addressing or redoing the ending in the ongoing LN. Would I recommend this? Absolutely. <<less

Honestly, amazing story, so many times better than expected.
For once, MC's classmates are not absolute as*holes for no reason.
Also, love the power progression of the MC. Pretty much every power up he gets feels deserved to a degree, specially the ones that came to be because of his insanity and his gamer-like brain.
The MC is also somewhat uncommon, specially because of his skill Clear Mind. He is still a bit of a goody two shoes at times and always downplay himselfs, but its to an acceptable degree (not the downplay part, that does bother me from time to time). He also gives up some of his achivemente to others which always makes me lose my marbles in all stories, but the story of this one is good enough to endure it.
I would say one of the weakest points in the story is the romance but that is being fixed in the Light Novel.
The thing I enjoyed the most is probably the POV chapters. Usually, in any story, having a chapter be in the POV of a someone other than the MC is EXTREMELY boring for me, but not in this one. Everytime I read "POV of X Character" I would get very excited cause I knew thing were about to go down in the most epic way possible. When we see things from the POV of the MC, things are a bit more hectic cause we can read the thought of the MC and we can see how nervous and lost the MC is, and when we see things from other"s POV, the MC looks like an emotionless machine that has absolutely everything under control. MC seems like an efficient robot that does not know what the word fear means. It is to the point that multiple characters, some that are even close to the MC, have repetedly stated that the MC is scary at times and has emotionless, cold eyes.
The contrast between the goofy POV of the MC and the Badass robot-like emotionless MC that we see from the POV of others is my favorite part of the novel.
