Clearing an Isekai with the Zero-Believers Goddess – The Weakest Mage among the Classmates (WN)

Description

Makoto Takatsuki is a normal high school student and a hardcore RPG player.

However, “normal” goes out the window when his whole class is involved in a bus crash and whisked away to another world! Powerful gods rule this strange new land of magic and monsters, and every newcomer is blessed with strong stats and unique skills.

Well, not quite. Makoto’s stats turn out to be pathetic, and his skills are super weak compared to his classmates’…he’s even stuck as an apprentice mage. Worse still, he’s given only ten years to live!

Luckily, Makoto soon meets a minor goddess named Noah, who appears in Makoto’s dreams and asks him to become her first believer. With the help of Noah’s blessings and a divine weapon, Makoto seeks to become strong enough to rescue his goddess from the dungeon where she’s been trapped.

By training hard and using his weak skills in unorthodox ways, Makoto proves that, even when playing on hardcore difficulty, an RPG player always makes it to the end!

I'd want to give this a 2.75 but I'll round this up to a 3. Overall, a somewhat plain and normal escapist fantasy of an extraordinarily weak isekai protagonist making full use of his few strengths to an extreme degree. While it's billed as a clever protag situation he isn't really all that clever. Some points that can serve as pros/cons:

  • The protag truly is weak and does have a rather extreme specialization. Unfortunately, he doesn't really get to use it as a crafty person would. It's more like in certain environments he can juice his power to an insane degree and become an extremely strong water mage, not as if he actually does interesting things with his power.
  • The protag is unfortunately the tried and true, cut board, done 1 trillion times dense Japanese protag. He's unassuming both personality and looks wise, wants to be unassuming, is somehow repulsed by female attention and never changes as a character nearly 200 chapters in. He does possess an isekai skill that specifically says it's designed to make him not lose composure (and it does work) but the author simply fails completely and utterly to make the MC into someone interesting. He's just a vehicle for girls to argue over.
  • The harem is justified well in-universe. It's executed with a slightly better than average hand but that's honestly not saying much. Unfortunately again, due to the author's incredibly stubborn insistence with keeping with Japanese tradition the protag must be immune to lust, romance, flirting, s*x and anything remotely hinting at it. That is, truly unfortunately, not an exaggeration; he won't complement the girls, flirt with them playfully, try to kiss them, etc. He literally has Z E R O s*xual drive. The girls themselves clearly aren't allergic and they're very forward about it, but the author simply writes in interruptions that prevent the harem from taking a step past first base.
  • Perhaps the only element that I won't make sound incredibly negative are the goddesses and how they're frequently part of the story. He is in constant touch with his patron as well as other divine elements and it's both amusing and a nice touch on the world itself how invested and involved they are as characters.
I know that I've made it sound like a terrible piece of tr*sh novel, but it's really just mediocre.

Let me be straight, this is a really flawed novel and I could spend several pages explaining all it's problems. Like dense and dumb MC, inconsistent power systems, dbz-like battles instead of the advertised 'intelligent battles', etc. But I won't.

Instead I'll just mention the good, which is: Good pacing and tension with something always happening, including adventure, action and comedy/romance. Low on info dumps and tell don't show, with abundance of dialogues and suscint descriptions. Unnoriginal but okay plot that keeps you interested. Good enough characters, aside from their uncommon... more>> disposition to harems and unreasonable affection towards the MC.

This is NOT a novel that will amaze you, but one of those mind numbing escapists fantasies that you can guess what will happens next but still reads to stave away boredom. There's a bunch of content to read, and the writting is pleasant enough to keep you going for the next chapter.

So if you are able to bypass the many flaws you WILL find in this novel, you'll be entertained. Do not try to take the story and worldbuilding seriously at all, or you'll hate it. Just try to have a lighthearted trip with silly characters in a incoherent fantasy world. <<less

Giving this a 5-star just from the mere fact that we finally have an MC who knows how to use his weak skills to the fullest instead of an MC who was literally handed all of his skills and just went traipsing around building a harem.

Edit after catching up to Chap 165:

You'll like this if you've read and are tired of mediocre, power fantasy, brain dead progression novels where the protagonist just gets handed a cheat skill and then essentially breezes through whatever crisis just oh so happens to land... more>> in front of him.

The plot is decent enough, the pacing is really great too, but most importantly, it's got a protagonist you can cheer on as he goes from weak to.. Well.. Not as weak.

The protagonist's unique skill is literally just being able to switch from 1st to 3rd person view, it's even called 'RPG Player Skill' for god's sake, his stats are so weak he's below a normal human and leveling up barely helps him since his base stats are so pathetic in the first place and on top of that, he can only use basic water magic.

What makes him so great then? Ladies and Gentlemen it's because we finally have a protagonist who ACTIVELY uses environmental advantages, always aims for the eyes first, a water mage who makes use and controls MIST AND BLOOD WHEN ASSASSINATING and just isn't uber strong and brain dead in general.

My boy Makoto actually trains, and he trains his mf-ing proficiency instead of nuking everything with firepower. He's weak as f*ck and he's conscious about his weakness, he's not some bullsh*t character who's immediately strong 5 mins into the story and just nonchalantly kills everything then makes a harem. There's some actual satisfaction whenever he defeats something. Oh, there's an arrogant hero bit*h f*ck who's tr*shtalking him and verbally harassing his girlfriends? Every other braindead overpowered protagonist out there is just gonna go 'Tee-hee I'm not gonna fight I'm a pacifist even though I'm level 999', but my homie Makoto actually went ahead and KILLED the motherf*cker, in his own kingdom, granted he got revived immediately after his mangled remains plopped down from the sky but hey, nice seeing the protagonist mu*der someone that deserves to be mu*dered.

There's also a reason to him always being in the eye of the storm, he's not just strolling around the forest going 'Oh what do we have here!' and then triggering flags left and right with no good reason, he's being actively pushed into 'danger' by his Goddess and thus organically progressing the story.

Granted his D E N S E N E S S is annoying as f*ck but hey, this is the one you pick up when you're tired of everything else and you've stopped jerking off and stroking your ego by pretending you're the protagonist of the last 13 copy paste power fantasy novels you've read.

Like I've said, there's some real gratification when the protagonist clears a hurdle, because the protagonist actually thinks to solve shit. <<less

OK this is my first review:

I've read up to the latest raws and will put any spoils under spoiler tag.

The characters are much more complex than initially made out to be and the story flows pretty well. Many of the critiques with strong negatives toward the MC and the side characters is actually very important parts of the story they just haven't gotten to. I really love the dynamic between Makoto and Sakurai (hero of light) Sakurai is no Kouki as some people seem to think after first few chapters.... more>> It reminds me of the short story "My Hero" here on NU.

Sakurai: big spoilers

Spoiler

Sakurai seems like an overly good person who just wants to bring MC along cause he pities him at first. As the story progresses we learn that Makoto is the only person who Sakurai truly trusts ever since he was a small child and the only person in the world he can openly speak to about the burdens he's carrying. TBH Sakurai is one gender away from being main heroine.

[collapse]

Makoto: big spoilers

Spoiler

Other than this, the MC is truly the most fanatical believer in his god in the story. Even if he makes fun of her all the time. He rejects the strongest power in the world and claims to the other gods that he'd do anything Noah asked of him, implying he'd kill the other heroes if she wanted it. He stopped talking to Sakurai in middle school cause the other got popular and he didn't really want to blend into the crowd. This caused the two to grow apart (Though Sakurai still considered Makoto his best friend.) Lastly Makoto isn't that dense, he seems that way at first but he isn't. His RPG player skill is much more than it's made out to be and one of his other skill allows him to basically completely freeze his emotions. It hasn't been explained yet but I think the skill allows him to bend the fate of the world with the choice he makes. That's just my guess from various events that occur in the story.

[collapse]

Finally this isn't an abandoned and revenge type story or an I level alone type story. He only claims to want to be alone early on but that's just a lonely guy being tsundere cause he's scared of rejection. He gets over it in the first few chapters. <<less

pros:

  • MC actually uses his brain in earlier fights
  • decent start with somewhat interesting premise
cons:

  • typical dickless/cuck MC
  • generic, poorly explained and poorly executed power system
  • 1-dimensional side characters
  • no good/memorable antagonists
  • MC is the only person with above room temperature IQ, all other characters are too s*upid to accomplish anything of significance

Pretty well into the series since I have nothing better to read right now... and the MC is probably the weakest part of the entire story. He is very much a mob character complete with beta features 1) Allergic to women 2) Refuses any s*xual advances 3) Dense despite knowing their intentions to the point of kissing, yes the MC is THIS dense 4) Weak to killing other humans even if they want to kill him 5) Absolute pushover when it comes to other people asking for him to help

The... more>> story starts him off as potentially some sort of 1 person against the world but honestly this weak turd only survived because of plot armour, his personality is totally off considering his circumstances, incidentally even his best friend has a better personality AND gets laid in the series. The "hero" of the world has 20 fiancees and gets laid multiple times, our MC is a virg*n till idk the end of the novel? Yeah forget it haha...

Read if you like beta MC's I suppose, tbh even amongst Japanese beta MC's he truly is the worst of the lot, also for one of the heroines spoiler here
Spoiler

Furiae almost got cucked by the "hero" of the story becoming one of his 20+ fiancees might I add, only for the author to roll it back because readers kept dropping or commenting that they hated the direction. Can't believe how s*upid this author is sometimes, like why *would* the readers, us enjoy seeing the MC being cucked out of nowhere LOL

Overall, it's a pretty cliche story but enjoyable nonetheless.

World building is great, I love how the author put some references from mythology and pop culture.

MC doesn't become OP from the start, he learnt many thing along the journey and got stronger bit by bit. His companion helped him a lot and not just some peanut gallery orbiting MC either, which is pretty rare in isekai story nowadays. The final arc got dragged for a little bit but the ending is worth it.

Really, really, really disappointing railroading by the author to kick off the final arc. Just, the most absurd nonsense and choices by multiple characters that makes it feel like the previous 300+ chapters were written by someone else entirely.

I put off reading the conclusion for over a year now and started re-reading from the start a few days ago and now this and I don't know if I can bring myself to finish the series now.

Edit: Once I was able to get past the arbitrariness of those happenings, it went... more>> back to its usual quality, but that was a real stain on the story. I've now read the conclusion and am in the after story and am happy I made it. 5 stars through to the end with the exception of chapters 315 to 318 or so which were so terrible as to drop the series an entire star and almost made me drop the series. <<less

I finish it and it good, I already wrote a comment on the LN so I'll say it again.

Good story, character development, art, some funny moments as well.

You don't have to read it. But sometimes don't listen to the other comments that are literally complaining about the smallest detail. Like the MC not loosing his v-card, like if you guys really want a character to lose his v-card then just read r-18 novel. Like literally how hard is it. This novel is R-15 not R-18.

Yea the MC doesn't lose his... more>> v-card after the storyline finish. <<less

I've read too many novels to count, but the ones I've finished can be counted on both hands, and this novel is one of them. Just the fact that I was able to finish this novel alone is enough for me to give it a 5 stars, but I'm going to have to drop it to a 4 because of the way each arc of the story was structured:

Spoiler

Each arc usually goes like this, MC goes to a new place and meets new people who are unaware of him --> gets severely underestimated by them --> performs a new feat that is greater than the last one --> people of said place acknowledges him --> repeat

[collapse]

Now I'm not saying the whole novel is like that, as there are really good foreshadowing to an even better twist. Especially towards the ending is when the author abandons the aforementioned formula of each arc. At the same time, the predictable structure of each arc is also what kept me reading, weirdly enough, so if you're able to stomach around 200 chapters of somewhat predictable writing, then this novel is fun and an enjoyable read.

Don't take the novel too seriously as there are a lot of cliches: childhood friend, tsundere, harem, dense MC (not really but still), MC thinks himself as weak but everyone obviously reveres him and thinks hes op, and such. That aside, the second half of the novel is when it really picked up for me, especially after a certain plot point, to the point that I couldn't stop reading.

TLDR: Good casual read that will pick up the pace in the latter half, most arcs are somewhat predictable. <<less

Ayy! Nice novel. It has a bunch of cliches, but it isn't drowned by them. The characters can get kinda trope-y, but they're still memorable and interesting. There's also no s*upid catfighting or misunderstandings causing drama.

I really like the MC's relationships with his friends (note: not the heroines, but the dudes). My favorite bits were when he interacted with the Hero.

The non-MC POV chapters were done really well and showed how awesome Makoto is. The MC's fights/powers are also pretty creative imo throughout.

I also liked how MC's goddess wasn't just... more>> "a little girl" since some novels make the goddesss look AND act like immature children. MC's goddess wasn't a block of stone, but cute and possessing the vibes of an actual goddess.

I wouldn't say this is super spectacular and a deep read, but you can feel the effort the author put into writing and planning things out. The afterword shows some of the author's thoughts/work btw (full of important spoilers though), but I could tell from how things early on were important/connected to something later. There were holes, but the author acknowledged most of them lol and they weren't important imo.

I would read this if you want a decent isekai novel that isn't too dark/serious but a fun read. It's not a best of the best novel, but it's solid unlike many copy/paste isekai novels :/ <<less

    • First of all, this is my first review on this website and I am ready to add more and as you can see I have read till 30 chapters but I can assure you that I have read and watched so much stuff as of now that I can understand where this is going.
    • Basically, the main character is a Pushover, he is not doing things on his accord which idols of people are supposed to do. As the title and description says he is believer of a Goddess who pushes him around according to what she wants but yes it looks like she doesn't and also he gets pushed around by girls obviously and his friends also. And due to this being pushed around all the time, his character is pretty weak at heart (and brain also) like if he didn't have a skill, he would have died of heart attack long ago haha. I will give you an example (it is not some big spoiler and story works the same you know it before or not)
      Spoiler

He is weakest right? So his best and only friend asks him to come to a city and he goes there, later a girl asks him 'Can I join your Party' he obviously agrees after seemingly fake reluctance which definately doesn't add up. Like why would you disagree in the beginning if after another request your castle easily breaks. So yeah he is some real Pushover.

      [collapse]
    • And the GODS in this novel, they are supposed to be Gods right? But they have wishes and wants (They go to war against each other), jealously just like humans, you should ask what is difference between them and humans, yes go ask Author-san.
    • And lastly, as same as some other reviewers, this seems like Konosuba (tbch it doesn't) ah right what's with all those numbers of years like 15 Mil or so, is it possible for world of Magic to live so many years? With Finger like things that can destroy a country and GODS that don't care or care too much? I don't get it but can still accept it as Japanese cliche. There are some real plot holes yes a lot, a whole lot of plot holes haha and info that seemingly have no real use later.
Well, either way, have a fun read if you are interested, well you can drop at any point if you don't like story like me (?) but with the same sense you can get intersted after seeing bad reviews, that is a fact!

This could have easily been one of my Favorite stories if the romance Was a bit better and MC had more self confidence.

The MC is powerless at the Start and while he gets stronger towards the end you never feel like he is overpowered. He has to put in a lot of effort to keep up with others because of his bad skills and dangerous Situations often get resolved by Teamwork.

The internal monolog of MC as well as conversations with the godess are really funny and lighten the mood.

The classmates... more>> are actually relevant and aren't just potential love interests and people to show his amazing skill to like in other novels.

The skill/magic system is fun to read. It's not super in depth but has no holes and makes sense. Proficiency means you can see his progress and there are a whole lot of different things done with magic.

The MC is a bit too much of a pushover. While it is fun to read it doesnt make much sense and is annoying to hear from time to time
Spoiler

he casually talks with gods and doesnt obey them but kneels in front of kings? He also gets pushed around by noel and sophia a whole lot even though he doesnt seem to like them a ton.

[collapse]

There is time travel and unsurprisingly it does not make much sense. (Don't get me wrong it was fun to read)
Spoiler

MC has to go back in time 1000 years and safe the hero. After he comes back a lot of things changed (makes sense so far), what does not make sense is that the great sage has memories of MC from 1000 years back even before MC goes back in time and the future has not changed yet

[collapse]

So far none of the classmates have shown any interest in going back to earth, maybe they will in the after story but so far it doesnt seem like it.

This is a harem Story, while I personally Prefer 1 Heroine or maybe 2 and not a handful of them thats not the Main Issue for me. To me it feels like a lot of the girls fall in love with the MC while the MC views them as acquaintances maybe friends because they havent spent a lot of time with each other. But they will then immediately talk about marriage and sleeping together without trying to make MC fall for them at all which is really weird.
Spoiler

especially sophia I can see how she falls for him but she is always super jealous and blaming MC its really awkward to read for me. Janett has barely and screen time and she still talks about marriage

[collapse]

MC never initiates Any Form of contact and never Shows affection (guess its supposed to be funny but just makes him look like an ass imo) and If some girl Tries to get intimate with him its immediately interrupted by another one barging in, which is fun the first few times but just annoying towards the end. <<less

Probably one of the most surprising Isekai's I have read in a long time. I honestly didn't have much expectation for this one given the terrible title. But I guess by now I should not judge japanese novels by the lack of creativity in their titles. The story starts out rather bog standard, and if you are someone who reads up till chapter 42 and then says "this is just generic isekai tr*sh", well... you should have read further.

The story does have some typical Japanese tropes though- with the as*xual... more>> protagonist being the most irritating one. He has several women who all decide by themselves to marry him, and the protagonist is just so into getting stronger than he somehow became a Eunuch, to the point that two of his girlfriends seem to have become lesbians out or frustration. Seeing how common such characters are makes me wonder if maybe such behavior is widespread in Japan... what young male of that age would be able to keep his hands off several willing beautiful girls who have decided to share you among themselves?

But outside of that, the story is really entertaining, and at some point in the story takes a surprising turn that I haven't seen before in an Isekai. The translation quality is also pretty excellent. <<less

It's a pretty good series definitely one of the better written ones, though there is a certain point for a chunk of the WN where it feels like the author has writer's block and is just writing SOL romcom filler which drags it down a bit. But overall the story is pretty great if u exclude the filler segments.

It's an isekai but MC is given a relatively weak start and effectively left behind by his classmates and abandoned by the other Goddesses except for one. There is a bit of... more>> outrage catharticism where the MC is looked down on then proves them wrong, which I do think drags down the novel a bit, early on to around halfway into the story the author constantly likes to use the pattern of person in power looking down on MC -> gets beaten up/saved -> borderline devoted superfan, which comes off a bit cheap when some of them who kicked him when he was down and only came back when he proved himself to be strong.

There's also several characters who get put on a permanent bus despite being incredibly important to the world including including a major love interest which hasn't been brought up at all, it feels like the author's leaving plotlines for a future plot but at the same time straight up forgetting or ignoring them. <<less

This is one of the few novels that got me hooked so much that I kept on reading without regards to anything else. The worldbuilding is vivid and comprehensive, the characters are likeable and memorable, the story feels natural enough in the WN, and the LN so far seems to fix a lot of the inconsistency the WN has.

I might give this WN a 5*, but it is not a perfect 5* because I still have some criticism. However, from reading the licensed LN I'm confident the author can patch... more>> it up enough so that it fully deserves the 5*

The romance feels a little lacking and can be a little frustrating later down, but not in a way that's typical of a dense protagonist i.e

the MC just basically cannot go further than a kiss, always being interrupted by something, which gets a little bland after the first few times. But since this isn't a smut WN, it's nothing that affects the enjoyment of the story too much

. But he is aware of the feelings of his harem, just feels conflicted about it.

The fights are well thought out enough that it makes the MC doesn't feel too overpowered, and instead he has to actually use his brains (and oftentimes have to sacrifice something) in order to win. If there is one criticism is that
Spoiler

later on when the MC is broken he can just sacrifice his lifespan in exchange for powerful cheats, but it still had the limitation of him literally dying sooner.

There are actually a few plot points that goes somewhat unexplained, but they are mostly early on, and since the series hasn't ended yet, we still aren't sure what the author is planning on doing with them, mainly

the goddesses are established to be shady and aren't 100% good, so we still don't know if the MC will turn to evil or not, but for now he seems to be treading on the path of good and exclusively that. And not to mention the goddess wants to free her siblings, but from where the story is heading + the author's approximate timeline I don't feel like we'd have time for that.

Overall the early parts can be a little rough, but the more you get into it the more captivating the world becomes and the story feels more comprehensive. You follow a super weak guy at the beginning and by the end he gets strong, but the journey to get there feels natural, and you can't help but read further to see just what will he do next, or what the world will become, or where the story will head. That, to me, is a mark of a great piece of writing. To captivate the reader even if it's not perfect. <<less

I will give 5/5 for the story,

Good romcom, but the MC too dense, having a girl who love you over 2 years but didnt touch her more than kissing
