Clearing an Isekai with the Zero-Believers Goddess – The Weakest Mage among the Classmates (WN)

Description

Makoto Takatsuki is a normal high school student and a hardcore RPG player.

However, “normal” goes out the window when his whole class is involved in a bus crash and whisked away to another world! Powerful gods rule this strange new land of magic and monsters, and every newcomer is blessed with strong stats and unique skills.

Well, not quite. Makoto’s stats turn out to be pathetic, and his skills are super weak compared to his classmates’…he’s even stuck as an apprentice mage. Worse still, he’s given only ten years to live!

Luckily, Makoto soon meets a minor goddess named Noah, who appears in Makoto’s dreams and asks him to become her first believer. With the help of Noah’s blessings and a divine weapon, Makoto seeks to become strong enough to rescue his goddess from the dungeon where she’s been trapped.

By training hard and using his weak skills in unorthodox ways, Makoto proves that, even when playing on hardcore difficulty, an RPG player always makes it to the end!

This novel is painfully generic. The magic is somewhat nice, but so much of the content is just various female characters having the hots for the MC that it's painful to read to those that don't like that kind of thing. It's a shame that it's written like that, the alsmost exact same plot but without the harem stuff it would have been readable.

Very disappointed the author didn't stick with the whole "he is not strong, but in his own way he helps out" they went with at the beginning,... more>> they just hade to make the protagonist overpowered.

There's also a lot of sexualization of what's basically children, it's terrible; like, look at the illustrations and try to tell me it's not pandering to pedos.

I'm genuinely surprised I read this much because of the the sunk-cost; it also helped that reading update after update was easy since it's so bland, but it's pretty disgusting looking back, it's truly not worth reading. <<less

Okay, I'll change my whole review...
TL;DR: not worth your time, unless you are a sucker for your usual insecure, dense, plain, etc. MC, and low-quality harem building, a slice-of-life isekai under the "action" genre, drama that gets solved in 1-2 chapters, and pretty superficial characters.

----Edit: The only redeeming quality of this WN, is the world-building. If they had focused on that instead of writing that many harem rom-com shenanigans, it would have been a solid story, and could have already ended. On the current arc, the story is at least more readable, and quite interesting (if you ignore the awful harem) ----

Even if I rate it 3*, I don't think I'll stop reading it.

The WN starts at a 5* for me, but now (283+ chapters in) it's a solid 3*. At first, it seems like a different story than most isekai with the "same background", and in which the other classmates aren't either useless, or talk sh*t about the MC, but the more the story advances, the more the characters undeveloped, from being interesting characters, for whom you could write a story, to becoming plain secondary ones. It's one of those harems in which everyone falls in love with the MC for no reason.

About the romance...
MAIN TIMELINE
It's utter garbage, you have minimal development in the relationships, boring female characters, low tier rom-com, a lot of cuckblocking between them, over-jealousy, distrust, etc. And it composes more than 50% of the story. What I will give to the writer, is that I find the goddesses, and the male cast entertaining.

Spoiler

1000 YEARS IN THE PAST

[collapse]
It started great and was refreshing, but again, it reverted. And a character I really liked, ended up becoming a garbage one.

And keeping in topic with the 1000 years thing. It was refreshing, getting away from all the romance thing, and introducing an interesting story (by this WN standards), although it went downhill, we again got shitty rom-com but WITH NEW CHARACTERS!!! WOOO!!. And even if the story started interesting, it got old fast. And don't get me started on the writing, I don't even know what the writer is trying to accomplish. It's an utter mess. it's all over the place. It had a lot of interesting topics to touch upon, but they decided to go for the most cliched one...

With all that out of my system, even if I don't enjoy the story, for some reason I can't stop reading it, even if it's more of a slice-of-life isekai. The goddesses are lovely, and entertaining (although, even if rarely, they become annoying). The male characters are mostly inexistent, but there are some good ones, mostly in the latest chapters. I ended up liking the guy who was supposed to be the worst.

Started out with potential with an interesting premise and characters with defined/interesting motives. However, as it progresses you can tell the author was running out of ways to build upon their characters. All characters other than the MC become one-note shells of their former selves with the sole purpose of propping up the MC.

The story starts well with a weak MC that is adept at combat strategy and has potential. Then he becomes a beta, undecisive cheating bastard like those in some japanese harem novels. The dense MC is fine with any hot woman and doesn’t really care about them nor anything else really and saying yes to most requests, because he’s completely apathetic to reality.

One thing I hate most in this novel is.. It focuses a lot on POVs of female characters whom are not romantically interested in Makoto... I mean we rarely get any other male POV... I mean seriously... They are lover's of a side Character that we can't even relate to....
I somewhat Understandable for Noel's case.. But the moon oracle & her dealing of Makoto seriously pisses me of...

It's been a long time since I read a story where the main characters progression is weak - > weak

The Stat system level system blessing, basically everything to do with power scaling feels lazy, there's just something so incredibly off-putting to me about a story where the author seems to make it their mission to hinder their main character at every turn for no reason at all.

A brief summary

Spoiler

MC and all of his class are transported to another world, every single person but him is given powers, except him he's weaker than normal people, okay this has been done a hundred times right? It'll improve?

Nope!

Somehow in this magical world it's impossible to train your mana, it's seemingly impossible to learn more combat skills (even though he learned thief skills?)

So divine blessing will help right? Nope! Just a bit of magic resistance from the goddess princesses blessing, despite the fact that her servants blessing is some sort of super power up?

Oh and she tells her servant not to give MC his blessing.. Because literally no reason at all

But then the big "power up" spirit magic! Because f*ck meaningful development or a method to get stronger on your own in a Consistent way, when it's convenient for plot MC can ask for spirits to do anything with infinite mana, when it's not convenient he's still basically just a super soaker who can freeze the floor.

Also as a side benefit of not actually making a Stat system you can give the MC plenty of levels without it actually doing anything at all, isn't that fun

okay, I dropped this novel due to the MC character which make myself could not continuing on reading.

the are things to be said regarding this novel

the good :

the story of how it was flowing were going progressingly good

the bad :

- the MC is given an unique of dragon quest type skill which is only given the option of YES and NO for him to choose in making a decision.
Meanwhile his close friend were given a skill of a dialogue box skill like a visual novel protagonist which including accessing backlog dialogue and the other childhood friend were given a skill for certain number of remaining lives like slash action games.
This could tell the MC unique skill does not any special meaning and just useless.

- the MC is truly a dense in truest meaning while considering that he was surrounded by 3 beautiful women (so far) and they had feelings towards him.

- the MC makes cringe/reckless decision. He was not able to making a plan which requires a discussion with his party members

- MC was made a puppet by the goddess

- The statuses were useless and its growth was limited unless it was removed by the goddess authority.

This novel is just... so dry man. Nothing that you haven't seen a billion times before. It's just dull at this point, it's routine. There isn't anything really bad about it, but there isn't anything good about it either. Like there isn't anything in particular that I can point to that makes it especially bad (I mean there are lots of things to point out, I just mean nothing that stands out by itself), but it is just, in general, boring to read. It would have honestly been better if... more>> it were worse in other aspects, but atleast had something different and unique to itself.

The isekai genre is extremely oversaturated, and so stories like this need a hook, something unique to justify their existence. But this simply doesn't have it. The only really good thing is the translation.

If I'd been reading this a few years ago I might have liked it, but now it's just a slog man. If you're still in the phase of being absolutely in love with the standard genre of "nerdy introverted japanese school kid is transported to fantasy world" and its associated tropes (honestly I still like it mostly, I just need a slight but if uniqueness to hook me), then you'll like this (probably), but if you're beginning to get bored of that the cut and dry formula, then this probably won't interest you. <<less

If you like standard isekai (weak to strong, overpowered abilities, classic fantasy), this is one of the good ones.

The tropes are countless, some played straight, while most of them are played for laughs. Be forewarned, it is a tr*sh isekai after all.

Author (and Reigokai-sama) blessed us with a lot of references to not only pop culture, but to mythology and obscure things.

Spoiler

First off, the fact that the Goddess is Noah, on an arc.

Second, in the beginning, Makoto says one of his first games was saving the princess from a castle. Guess what.

Third, the whole thing with Naia being Nyarlathotep, but also sneaking in Nyaruko-chan reference. Wild that I got the first one even before the reveal.

[collapse]

The MC is a Makoto. Just like his namesake from Tsukimichi, he is a training freak, a very carefully hidden sociopath, an absolute buffoon when it comes to romance. The only difference is that one gets to bang a hot dragon samurai...

The plot is as mundane as it could be, but the author still didn't disappoint and managed to keep the stakes high. It is rewarding in the end, as the last 3 arcs were a literal cherry on top of well-executed tropes, drama and a triumphant ending. Classic "hero's journey".

The pacing and progression is... awful, to be honest.
Spoiler

The plot device of maou resurrection speeding up really sets into perspective that in 3 (5) years, MC went through the classic "kill a slime - kill a god" isekai trope. It never made much sense and I wish there were more authors who abstained from rushing the plot.

[collapse]
Not as bad as time skips, looking at you, Death Flags-kun.

The romance is okay. It doesn't really resolve in the main story, and it is a weird harem
Spoiler

consisting of two very obviously yuri heroes, of which one is the childhood friend and the other is hot, two princesses (and a major noble), a literal goddess (or multiple, if you are a fan of Ira-sama)

.

Female leads are two-dimensional. There's not much development in terms of personality for the initial romance interests, apart from their attraction to each other. The other three at first glance are the patrician choice in terms of actual personality, but then you think a second time and it's clear: a kuudere, a tsundere and a yandere. Jeez.

Overall, like I said, it is thoroughly tr*sh isekai. But it is a very good one, and a completed one at that. <<less

Actual plot and characters are quite decent, gave it a 3 mostly because the author continually introduces potential plot points/details and then fails or forgets to utilize them at points in the story where they make sense.

As an example (kinda a bad one, but I don’t want to spoil you) : Sa-san is a lamia with a pretty good backstory but she ends up spending all of her time transformed as a human and can basically just be treated as a human (crazy) girl.

The lamia part just serves to explain... more>> her crazy high physical stats. The trauma the author spends chapters and chapters detailing is only partially resolved, and even her later evolution is glossed over just to again provide a convenient strength bump when the plot requires it.

There was so much potential to use this in a more interesting way, but the author fails to use it in anything but the most basic.

Other than the story being riddled with these flaws (and a few contrived plot points), it really is quite good. <<less

If it were not for the MC's sheer s*upidity, I think I could have enjoyed this novel. The protagonist is as dense as diamond, the kind you find in dumb harem novels.

The setting is alright for an isekai, the other characters a bit better than average. The author's style is good, and I like the way he writes.

But the protagonist wastes it all. He can't think for himself, he is socially awkward, but he's resourceful in fights (not clever, but resourceful).

Too many Inconsistencies

Why does every story have to over use the adventuring Guild and / or have universal identification (something that no country has yet to manage in the modern world)

Spoiler

Chapter 5, I don't have money and use some of the 3000g for a knife sheath
Chapter 16, again with the "I don't have money trope
(What about the 100, 000 gold the merchant gave you for their rescue)

Chapter 57-58, Expand my believers (You said earlier that you can only 1 believer every 10 years as punishment from the newer gods.)

They stopped mentioning his life span issue until Chapter 128

I have to admit the MC's friend using desu zo is getting annoying by Chapter 153

Doesn't lose his v-card until chapter 340

This is great, but just one thing I find strange is the lack of consistency, no, rather random tidbits of Info that don't get used after getting mentioned like, once.

Like, the lifespan sounded like a pretty vital point of the story at the beginning and the author just decided to forget about it until about halfway into the story.

Another example is Sofia's Cold Heart skill which we see her turn off once and then never again. And I can't even tell if she has it on or not now. Granted, I am still in c131

This Araki forgot type bullsh*t is kind of annoying but if the reader also forgets about it then it should be fine. Probably.

Other than that and the lack of time the Protagonist spends with the Heroines, the story is pretty good (Which I heard is fixed in the Light Novel? I'll try to get my hands on those). Worldbuilding's also great, I can tell the author put a lot of thought into it. It's refreshing to see a weak reincarnated person not get f*cking hated by an entire country just because their stats weren't what the summoners were expecting. Overall, 4.6 Stars. Round that up you get 5.

Update c250

Now I'm really deep in and there's a lot more Araki forgot moments. I considered putting it down to a 4-star review but thanks to Reigokai's excellent translation I'd decided not to.

The Level system is also basically next to obsolete, sometimes terms of stats are thrown around, and that would be fine if we had a baseline for what's normal and what's sensible, but no. We just get told, "Oh my Magic is 4"

ok and? What's the normal magic for a human to possess? The lack of information here is confusing to say the least. <<less

4.5 for everything till the last arc, 2.5/5 for the last arc... 3.5/5 in average, rounded to 4/5 for the whole story.

The breaker of 'weak to strong' trope for the 3/4 of the journey... Spoiler

Whole story is about our dear psycho-beta-cool-nearly emotionless MC with his not-so-trusty goddess write their story on invisible ink his adventures from shits and giggles to literal time shenanigans and world destroying fighting which would not be read by public because the ink is invisible. From where he start as a weak as sh*t apprentice mage, to world destroying god which control literally every programs that make up for the world (Spirits are literally Sentient beings in control of everything there which bypass the mana expenditures). Kinda cool how he still gets dunked on for the first half of the story, to being crazy-OP-but-no-one knows-how-OP on the latter part of the story. Then somehow rise up to greatness when he came back in time to save everything (and of course he would not get credit he deserve). Then somehow nosedive when it came to the last arc...

For the whole run it really delivers on being the background character and an eminence in shadows *wink* *wink*... His contribution to the whole history for human is not even 10% of what he really did. Atleast those who knew what he sacrificed for knows them (which is just a handful, mind you).

By near end of this story, he's literally the hidden hero that would dump every hero in existence that even him versus the world is literally impossible (even before deification, he is already busted AF). But heck he just want to be that "mob" that would not be as remembered as the greatest hero, instead he gives all the credits to other people which really somehow makes me want to facepalm. I don't know if it's humility or he just does not give an F, doing this should have been a big boost of divinity to his lover-slash-goddess.

Still a good ride though so no bulli... Though I'm not sure if I can recommend this whole story as a whole; might be better for them to read the light novel as it has better pacing and story because WN is literally the 'draft' of it.

Well honestly speaking it is average story. Everything changes in the arcs near the end of the story. Makoto literally worked hard to get OP powers. Figuratively speaking water really is the strongest magic in the story. The heroines, yes. Some may Compare Lucy to Megumin (Konosuba). The author really based her on Megumin. The ending is pretty open ended. Makoto continuing his life everyday happily. Wait for Afterstories though. Also read the author's new work. It is story parallel to this. On the surface, there isn't a lot that sets this story apart from other isekai, but it really does take the best parts from the genre and uses them well. The MC is strong, but not overpowered in a meaningful way. The author strikes a very careful balance that keeps things interesting. The story is well paced, being broken into volumes in the web novel version, and they admit in their notes that there were other things they wanted to do but got cut out for pacing. Some people complain... more>> because it makes it seem like some important people just get killed off screen, but I think the story would be worse if it had chosen to show the fight. Most importantly, this means we don't have to inject the MC into literally everything that is happening. The story also does a good job of staying focused. There is one enemy the MC fights eventually who has nothing much to do with the story beforehand.

Spoiler

He is the son of a God, and the MC almost dies fighting him. The fight gives the MC a major power boost that he consistently uses for the rest of the story while also convincing one girl to confess to him.

[collapse]

This could have steered the story in a weird tangent, but instead, it only serves to expand the lore of the world while also having an effect on the MC and the other characters. The MC themselves is really great. Funny and a little dense with the harem, but not to an annoying degree. I would say he is more airhead, and it is consistent. He doesn't spend the whole story completely oblivious. He generally realizes on his own that girls like him, even if it does take him a minute. And you can always understand why he thinks the way he does.

Spoiler

One girl has a crush on a different major character when they meet, so MC treats her like that guy's girlfriend. Even when her feelings start to turn, he isn't going to notice because he has already drawn a line there.

[collapse]

Overall, a great, well written story. A perfect explanation of why isekai is still such a popular genre. <<less

Probably one of the best isekai story I've ever read. Of course I've read mushuko tensei and other famous Isekai like re:zero and konosuba but still this story stand out in my archived

I like the gentle flow of the story where the MC slowly become strong. Even though Isekai story with weak and dense MC is pretty common, the side story and all the side character continuesly support the main arc of the story which make me want to know more.

The main arc were progressing greatly but the only problem... more>> is the heroin in the story. All the heroin that tries to make a move on the MC always ended up failed in the end especially the part where people just barge into the room or some people purposely pulling them apart.

Other than that, the story and character is well made which make me always looking forward for the next chapter. <<less
