The story is nothing like I thought it would be. Firstly, the cover looks totally randomly picked, and I still don't understand what the title has to do with the story. Summary is misleading and it doesn't exude the atmosphere of the plot.

The story doesn't take place in modern times, and it doesn't take place in China. That surprised me, because I am used to Chinese background. It was refreshing to read something different and it gave off a subtle type of feeling.

I am in love with MC. People who... more>> are saying that he is weak clearly didn't understand the story. It is about learning how to love, and how to find a place in the world after being lost. Under the layers of romance, the story is also about emotional growth. MC posseses some kind of an inner beauty that is breathtaking. He is gentle, smart, caring, and honest.

ML and MC help each other fight their weaknesses. The story uses a lot of metaphors to show human mind. The psychology of characters in this novel is well described, altough sometimes the greediness of some characters is repulsing and maybe even exaggerated.

Overall I really enjoyed it. I wish it was longer. 5/5 <<less

Truthfully a 4.5/5 stars but I rounded up.

I had a great time reading this novel. I loved the strong emotions and build up that the mains developed. It was absolutely heartbreaking to see their trauma (especially Jian Qiao's) but I loved how they helped heal one another. The poetry being told with their admiration was everything.

My only issue was probably how rushed the ending was..I knew why the conflict happened but to shove everything in those last couple chapter and not feed us with enough sugar...I was not completely satisfied... more>> haha. <<less

It was fine, both MC and ML were intriguing and likeable characters. But it made me uncomfortable for the same reasons Game of Thrones did, which is that triggering and traumatic experiences are used as plot devices. Purely personal opinion, noting in case I come across again.

Once again, thank you for your beautiful work translating this book, Confectioner.

The story is quite dark. The MC's experience is simply heartbreaking. And I say this as a human, as a mum and also from a romantic pov. His mum committed su*cide and wanted to take him down with her. His maternal grandparents seemed to have started hating him probably feeling better as they threw all the blame on his small shoulders, for his father he was just another of his many children with many other women, and his paternal... more>> grandparents only cared about keeping their reputation and making sure the other party doesn't sue/ask for compensation. To wake up from your mother trying to kill you to the whole world wanting you dead or being cold to you is definitely harsh. Not just for the chibi MC at the time. Getting PTSD was a matter of course.

Since his mother took the tragix step bc of love, MC associated love with destruction and death, thus it wouldn't be too far reaching to say he developed a phobia over this. Even though he tried his best to keep away from others, he still got stabbed by a woman who somehow got it into her head they had a relationship and was being dumped after spending one night talking to herself in his presence.

It gets even more tragic as he transmigrated to the horrendous place similar to middle ages, where might proves right, title proves righter still. Really, to be able to survive in that kind of society, even more, to even help his people, is way way too beautiful after everything the MC went through.

I have to say that the description of the MC's past and the times he transmigrated into are very dark and gloomy. There's a lot of angst there. Not the romantic kind, where a couple has misunderstandings and get hurt because of them, but the kind where one person is hurt by those close to him, then the world and non-existent laws when transmigrating to a new place.

It's an interesting story, though a bit rushed, as one of the people commented. I can see how the MC would fall in love with the ML, but I feel like he'd have more of a hard time coming to terms with it seeing how he was quite insightful and knowledgeable and averse to love. At least there should have been some description of his inner struggle - is he just dependent of this man bc he's a rare good man he found in those times, or does he actually indeed feel love? I feel like these types of struggles would have been expected in this type of book, where the author tried to give it a psychological edge. <<less

I found this book captivating. Although like mentioned earlier the background is carried out somewhat roughly.

I loved how both the ML and MC had personality, the ML didn't suddenly become unreasonably merciful as he states several times what he would've done or what he's taking into consideration because of the MC.
Translation quality was good.

Now to address the MC's character, I think it was well developed although I had to do a little thinking to reach that. Make sure to think about what the MC has been through.

1. He's never had a friend despite his tragedies, but has finally found one. Love has been torn and trampled in front of him many times, but then he finally finds the first person he can rely on. Then this person is brutally taken away from him after being told that this friend loves him and with his prior understanding of love although he has already developed that feeling he refuses to admit it because of a belief that has been proven to him time and time again: Love equals ultimate destruction.

2. As MC explains several times in many of those situations he was in where he relied on the ML he would not have been able to maneuver otherwise. In this case it wasn't a matter of cunningness or intelligence, but the need to survive for himself and his people. Think of it as you are a nine-year old in front of your mother. Although you may want to rebel you realize that if you do you can't buy your own house, food, or clothing.

3. Although sometimes I found MC quite corny I interpreted this as him trying to describe his overwhelming feeling in the purest way. As he had never felt this before.

I feel like I’ve finished reading it in just a blink. I didn’t even realize I’m in the last chapter until I read “The End”. These two were so cute, I loved the development of their love story and how they challenged themselves to be the better version of each other. The translation is superb. 💙

If you want a short synopses, it's simply a very much ardent and passionate love story. I don't know if it's because this is the first drama novel that I have read this year, but man it's just feel so melodramatic, not that it is bad though. CN authors and their misleading synopses always gets me. Anyway this novel main theme is degeneracy, avarice, and self interest so for those who can't stand any of those thing, don't read this. There will be no infrastructure nor kingdom building, only focused on the romance here, I was fooled on thinking it like that. What's with CN author depicting old time european streets always filled with sh*t though ? Like all of the human on earth experience that until soap were invented, it's not like plagues only occur in western countries, there's a reason why cremation is very popular in some asian countries.

MC is a romantic but indifferent man who thinks love is destruction. While ML chases beauties like flower, is a well known lady killer, warrior, and ruthless, yknow, typical ML recipe here, him automatically being a great philosopher AND a 3 years old in front of MC at the same time is cute though. The story will start at MC journey to socialize in the capital so that his people can have freedom to travel and other stuff (yes he's transmigrate, but he just know how to makes jewelry and perfume, cuz that's his job in previous life) and then he will meet ML who will be his only light in this world. First part focus on the pomp and circumstances of this world, second part will be full of MC and ML "bromance" and MC's unconscious flirting (like holy sh*t I think there 3-4 chapters in a row where they just unknowingly flirts each other).

Final part is a sudden turn of event where everything just became dramatic. Like damn it really do feels like those old kingdom romance plays/stories, it's very dogblood, which I hate, but hey this is short so might as well ! And it just feel natural for this novel I guess ?

THOUGH, I do understand that author intend this story just to be the sort of classical love story so that sort of important details are not needed. Not giving this any rating cuz I feel like this is already very suitable, although this novel definitely not my cup of tea, I do enjoy them :)

The relationship between the main couple was super sickeningly sweet!!!! Ahhh, no words can describe how bad I fangirl scream everytime those two unknowingly flirts with each other and then fanboy scream themselves! Lmao! I also love the fact that neither of the two were in the whole "bro, I am straight" or "no homo" mindset and were more focused on a sense of belonging and security instead. That was incredibly heart throbbing!

I do feel that some scenes were a little too brushed over in quick summaries so the story... more>> ended up feeling really fast paced at the end. However, I was fine with it. I really like the focus on the main couple anyway and was not too bothered by all the sweeping.

Oh. My. God. It was such a profound and poetic novel 😭. Man, the MC and ML's sincere and clumsy love is a great contranst against their wretched world. Specially during their flirting period, myghad! These two are sooo cute! Asjkksjsksk@*!

Anyways, my only disappointment is there no extras. Aaaaaaaaaaa I want more of them T~T.

The synopsis is a crime. It's so bad and do not potray the story at all. It's a beautiful and short yet sweet story. At one point in the story I cried because I dont think I will ever found someone who loves me as much as Rege to JQ.

Other than the flirtings between them, intentionally or not, there really isn't much fluff here asides from that.

The medieval times and ancient times have nearly no regards for common people's lives and this is something that can be seen in the story. For those fond of overthinking and immersing themselves into the world created by the book, I suggest you prepare a fluffy novel or light hearted one at least to read after this.

I didn't understand why it would be rated 1*. I've seen the reviews saying that the world is illogical, but the way the other characters think is actually somewhat realistic especially if you take the setting into consideration (middle ages). Although, I do agree that it might have been over the top since not a single one of the nobles thought like the ML and MC (like feeling off about the hygiene of the people //I was honestly disturbed by that (but not in an exaggerated way) //), so maybe... more>> the cannon fodders were made like that for the main characters to stand out.

Anyway! I had no problems with the pacing and finished reading it in a single day. I enjoyed the story a lot, I wouldn't say that it was fluffy (even if the reviews said so, I just couldn't bring myself to think like that), maybe because of the trauma experienced by the MC. I still bore it in mind until the end of the story. Although I do agree that the ending could be improved in a way that we could analyze MC's feelings deeper, I still felt that I would be impatient if things dragged on for too long so I was contented with the ending. It's a good read and the angst of the story was written well (at least for me) that I teared up a little. It's not that heavy but the impact is there. I would recommend reading it as a casual read, and the fluff of the story is very sweet and cute.

Lastly, I wanted to say that the translation is amazing! They really did a good job with it. I liked it so much and I really look forward to their translation projects. <<less

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeek this story was so cute (and also dark ofc its based on the medieval times). The only thing I'm unsatisfied about is how fast the ending got wrapped up QAQ, I wish the story was just 1-3 chapters longer siiiggh.

I'm honestly surprised how this author manage to write this story, but gave us such a shitty summary and title. They don't fit the story at all! I'm assuming these kinds of titles and such are popular in China because it's so annoyingly unfitting.

The story on the other hand is great. It's nothing too fancy, but just enough to keep you well fed. Alot of uncommon tropes and settings, so it does have a certain fresh feeling. I think the author should focus more on trauma and healing because that's... more>> the most interesting parts of the story. While not perfect, I do see potential. The romance is sweet but also feels off. Like:

After the ML confessed, the author did explored the MC trauma a little, but I wish it was a little more. They had little interaction before the ML went to war. The author then began to add pointless sh*t at the end like the fiancee or the MC getting really sick for no reason. I wouldn't have mind as much if the MC didn't magically get better when the ML came back. I wish the author used the opportunity the ML was gone, to explore MC struggles with his true feelings and his fear of love. This could of given much more background on his relationship with his mother and others. But no he just basically sleeps and is like "I don't want him to die, so I guess I love him".

Tbh, I didn’t expect this novel to be good, but it is!

I love how the development between the MC and ML wasn’t forced at all.

There were tooth rotting moments and some tiny bits of angst.

It’s a really surprising interesting read!

What makes this beautiful isn't the masterful writing or poetic plot. This novel has none of those.

What it has is a sense of healing. Healing for MC from his trauma, healing for ML from the fog of senselessness of their environment. Both of them striving to survive for their chosen goals, but it's not until they're with each other that they feel truly alive and real.
