Just a warning though — I do have unpopular tastes, I totally admit it. But aside from my bottom line, I more or less do end up reading novels with some of the stuff from my dislikes section if I hear about it everywhere, as I'm impulsive and tend to give into hype easily. That's why I've read the likes of 2ha despite hating noncon (talking about 2ha though, HAOYIXING WHEN?), I wanted to know what the others were talking about and just wanted to 'fit in' in a way. If you've got a taste similar to mine though, please let my lonelyass know lol. Let's be friends.

Drama Romance School Life Slice of Life Smut Yaoi

I have a love-hate relationship with this novel (leans a bit more toward hate for a few reasons). On the one hand, I liked the author's writing style, the way she handled things related to the main characters' orientation and coming out of the closet, and the fact that there wasn't grooming involved in the main leads' relationship (all these were the reason I started and continued reading it to begin with). ... more>>

But on the other, I strongly disliked how she constantly infantilised the MC (who's an adult) during the smut scenes. It began in the latter half of the novel too, so I didn't even see that coming and wasn't expecting this from the author. Here's a few parts from the novel, all belonging to the smut scenes, for example:

Within this clumsy kiss, like a child filled with reluctance to leave, Yue Zhishi intermittently called out for his gege, but little by little, he lost that brief moment of control.

His whole body eased onto Song Yu’s, and he took the initiative to merge their lips together. He actively kissed without much skill, like a child begging for candy.

Song Yu felt his attention was always caught on strange things. He brushed his lips against Yue Zhishi’s ear. “You can dirty it even more.”

Yue Zhishi’s face flushed, but he was a child who was eager to learn.

“Not calling me gege anymore?” His voice had been very low, slightly hoarse.

“You were such a good boy when you were younger. Do you remember what you used to call me?”

Under Song Yu’s guidance, Yue Zhishi thickly called out Xiao Yu gege, and he spoke them as though he was actually a child, indistinctly and without any self-control. (this was the most uncomfortable one... Like, 'he spoke them as though he was actually a child' wth author)

And as I mentioned before, these are just a few parts, not all of them. I obviously didn't save many since I was too uncomfortable to even read them again, I kept just enough to defend my point and why I felt like the author was infantilising the MC, otherwise people might come after me because it's a pretty popular, well-liked novel.

Honestly, I've always had a problem with p*dophilic themes (yes, treating and referring to an adult as a child in bedroom scenes falls under that category for me) so it touched my bottom line. That's why I wasn't able to brush it off and pretend like this novel didn't had those scenes and lines. High-key pains me when otherwise nice novels have such... things.

Edit — almost forgot to mention, she described him as several animals too... in smut scenes. Here's examples of that:

Later, he lay on his side and even started to use Song Yu’s fingers to rub at them, his face almost buried into his pillow; like a cat in heat

Tears filled Yue Zhishi’s eyes as he teetered on the edge, and he kept wriggling his body like a water snake hungering to mate. “Ge… gege…”

Yue Zhishi obediently swallowed it all, as adorable as a puppy getting fed.

I just need to know why the author thought of kids and animals while writing those scenes. <<less

It was entertaining but surely not perfect or flawless. I must say, the middle part of the novel was extremely intense, I liked how the MC tried to restore his kingdom and the new characters that were introduced, but the ending was... meh. It felt incomplete, underwhelming and too rushed, as if the author wanted to write more chapters but just left it at there. The extras weren't that special either, especially the first one.... more>>

But it did make me realise one thing — I really enjoy reading harem (of course when it's consensual and all the members are willingly a part of it) because this way, I don't have to continue reading about a single tr*shy ML while kicking my blanket in anger because I can't ship him with the MC. Since the MC has more people to take care of him and dote on him, so there's a chance that I might end up coming across at least one or two MLs who are nice and gentle.

If I were to rate the MLs here though, then my rating would be:

1) Huang Xuan — Because he was least cruel and most harmless out of everyone in the harem, and also because I'm a sucker for lively kind of MLs | Yun Feiyu — Because he could see through the MC, understood him and his ruthlessness the best, yet accepted and loved him the way he was.

2) Gu Yunzhou — I liked how he never met the actual Su Mochi (the og person the MC transmigrated into) so he had nothing against the MC, no grudges or misconceptions, their meeting and entire relationship dynamic felt so natural and authentic. Honestly, he would've ranked 1st for me if it wasn't for the fact that he was... too much in the bedroom. I get he's a ~cold, mysterious, emotionless~ cultivator/assassin but DUDE HAVE YOU F*CKING HEARD OF LUBE? OR SLOWING IT DOWN WHEN THE PERSON UNDER YOU ASKS FOR IT??

3) Ye Qingfeng — He was the funniest out of them all and his dialogues were nice too, but I can't get over the fact that he forced the MC | Liu Xi — I was rooting for him the most in the beginning. He had an interesting back story, a motive, a purpose, a mf personality and I was looking forward to his character development and their relationship progression. But the author decided to turn him into a 1-dimensional petty character who legit acts like a harem concubine, fights others for favour, gets jealous at every occasion and is too boring to read about. The MC dotted on him the least too, which s**ked because Liu Xi actually tried the most to win his favour. Seems like the author just didn't care about him. <<less

It's deadass creepy as hell.
