Full review: This story more than any other on this list, I adore. There are three main areas I want to break down: Character growth, content, and skill. Starting off with the character growth, I cannot emphasize how much this story naturally lets characters grow and develop. You're able to watch as some people soften to the MC and the crisp exteriors fall away as they begin to trust her while at the same time other characters are growing in ambivalence, obsession, fury, curiosity. No character is stagnant and while reading you'll see their personalities be fleshed out into people you have opinions on and care about their emotional wellbeing. There aren't a ridiculous amount of side characters so the ones you're presented are given depth and reason, their actions fitting who you've been introduced to and seen them to be.

The story is flush with content that matters and even in the little filler that exists, it still is used to show the interpersonal dynamics of characters and further the emotional connection to them even if the plot isn't moving too much. This relates back to the character growth aspect because in transactions or moments that risk being boring, we're satiated with rich internal development. There are barely any moments where you'll be able to happily say 'this seems like a good stopping point' and set it down, as the constant motion leaves only lulls, not pauses.

And goodness knows none of that would be possible without the sheer skill required in this writing. I'm not one to reread very often and there are seldom books where I sit around and think over specific scenes to the point I have to reread them or I'll actually go insane, but this is one of them. I've been absolutely hooked by this story and if it existed in print I'd buy it as my 5th physical book to own. After you read it maybe you'll have the same reaction, but the constant twisting and growing and warping and burning make me absolutely insatiable. What I thought would be a decent story has turned into my absolute favorite novel and something I will search for if I ever lose it. <<less
