By some ill fortune, Hikaru died in a traffic accident. He was in heaven standing in line, waiting to be judged, when he took an unexpected request to transfer his soul to a person in another world. He received an ability called Soul Board which he could use to allocate points to Skills to make himself more powerful.

But there was a catch…

「I want you to take revenge on someone for me within an hour. If you don’t, I’ll destroy your soul.」

To pull off the task assigned to him, he poured all his available points to the Stealth skill tree.

This is a story of a boy who specialized in Stealth. With his skill trees as weapons, he would demonstrate his unrivaled strength in another world.

I initially dropped this at c144 before returning and reading to c297 several months later.

To sum up the series, cool ideas, generic characters, passive execution. Everything you love and hate about Japanese novels is present.

Summary:

... more>> The MC is an extremely passive protagonist. He rarely ever moves and it's always reactively, avoiding conflicts and deescalating. It's a SoL if anything with the MC + harem taking a sight seeing tour and resolving conflicts along the way.

Power system:

Cool idea, never used. Just by going a safe "stealth" route he ended up being S-tier fighter. Skill branches end suddenly (his Sniping skill tree abruptly ends) and he is adverse to investing skill points. Since he doesn't fight, he doesn't level up so there will be entire arcs where the skill board was used once. He also rarely ever helps others around him for fear of being used despite the fact no one can touch him.

My initial grading of 3 stars holds up, if you're new to novels this is good but don't expect the world. <<less

so far, good enough experience.

something new happens every chapter almost, which makes the story more interesting an d engaging.

The name of the novel is a little misleading, which I thought was all a system f*ckery that is all but driven to hell by this point, but no, it has some semblance of a story-line and plot of its own.

I like it so far (c54) , but not that great.

I don't really have too many problems with this. Most of the questionable parts I'll just sum it up with "What did I expect?"

I will say though. I came here through the 'Ruthless Protagonist' tag but he's not ruthless at all. He's just a little "arrogant." If anything I'd consider overly kind. If you're going to add a tag at least make sure it matches the story.

I decided to create an account and write a review, because I was shocked at the low rating compared to it's rank. This WN updates regularly, with good English translation, and has great pacing. Somehow it has the same rating as another WN I read that has so many grammatical errors you would be hard pressed to find two consecutive lines free of them. The latest chapter of this, Weakest Mage, and Dull Prince are my usual reads as I'm drinking my morning coffee, with this being my first choice.... more>> Definitely 5 stars. This makes me think 'activity' is a better filter than 'rating' on this site, as the ratings don't seem as consistent as looking at what people actually read.

That said, I should probably write an actual review, huh? Well, this starts as an isekai'd MC with a cheat ability, but it has a different enough take on it to keep it fresh. As I said earlier, the story has great pacing, so you never have to trudge through a massive exposition as the character learns more about the world bit by bit. In typical OP MC fashion, he's never in any significant danger, but he's not omnipotent either (nor is he trying to be).

There's more I could say. Some people seemed to have issue with the sexuality in the beginning of the novel. This surprised me as well, because it was so brief that if you skip 3 lines you'd miss it entirely. They live together later, but it doesn't go into any raunchy details. I had to look it up again just to see what they were talking about. The characters are young, sure, but it's written sweetly and this novel doesn't have any of the weird, cringe-worthy Asian s*xual tropes you find in many of these novels. So I think its way overblown in the reviews. If that is really an issue for you, skip those three lines and you wont see it again.

I want to keep it short, but that's a weird place to leave it. So, again, I'd recommend this webnovel to anyone who enjoys isekai novels. I give it 5/5 and I always look forward to the next chapter. <<less

EXTREMELY OVERRATED!!!

it started out as something fun and acceptable,

then it started becoming more and more idiotic.

By the 3rd/4th arc, you have to kill all but one of your brain cells to find the idiotic characters palatable.

they make the DUMBEST decisions a character could make, yet.. Things turn out to be fine, like all shitty JNs.

dropping this now.

tldr: Worth a stop, not worth searching.

It's good, but for some reason felt unsatisfying. I tried figuring out why, I think these are the reasons...

kill tutorial count (ok), dead junkie king (ok).... rest of the f*cking problem (NOT OK)

... more>> The problems in the story's are piling up like a gigantic pile of elephant dung, even the mass marriage, the should be solution of the 3rd arc still wasting chapters in future arcs. Here are unsolved problem in my latest read:

mass orgy, ponsowatwat civil war, ponsowatwat war with beast country, pope wholesome activity, cult chan looked like my senpai, religious country keeping satan, the twintail you're calling is not available, certain knight midlife crisis, what next?!...

Its a typical Marty Stu story. Nothing particularly special or original here. No real reason to read it unless your desperate and have already read the many other stories in the genre that are much better written.

The plot & character development of the novel is somewhat immature. However, the plot feels fresh. The story seems a little sluggish in many events. Novels details are lacking.

However, the pace of the novel is fast and it is good enough for new readers to read.

The MC is OP. He can just do things like.

Spoiler
    1. Beat a dungeon on his own and with his GF in just 1/2 days.
    2. Defeat the best Swordsman of a country.
    3. Break into a countries defence. Etc..
[collapse]

However, For some reason, I still like the novel even if it lacks in many ways. But it of course, not a novel that can not be recommended. For a hot-blooded and MC centered novel like this, it can score good enough for teen reader or readers who don't like lengthy novels. Cause novel is fast-paced and fresh.

In short, this is a fairly standard, yet enjoyable isekai adventure story.

  • Premise:
The protagonist is a Japanese student, who is implied to be a bit of a troublemaker, who died of unspecified cause (read: it was probably truck-kun), and is in limbo while waiting to get to the afterlife. By a chance encounter with a young sorcerer astral-projecting into this limbo, he receives the opportunity to reincarnate into he latter's dying body, with the caveat that he must take revenge on the man who killed him and his family. To do... more>> so, the protagonist gains access to a so-called Soul Board, which is practically a status screen, where he can allocate points to various attributes and feats. Due to the time restraints, he quickly dumps all of his points into stealth skills and fulfills the wishes of the body's original owner, after which he sets out to integrate into the new world.

  • Setting:
The world is your standard isekai (medieval kingdoms, magic, adventurer's guilds, dungeons, et cetera), variation C (regressed world after the previous magitech civilization was destroyed), subtype B (there are other reincarnators, and they are responsible for various technological developments). The politics are a little shallow, but internally coherent. The metaphysics center around "soul ranks" (read: levels), and normal people "allocate" their points by just training really hard, while the protagonist can directly distribute his own (and others') points through the Soul Board. Magic is elemental based.

  • Characters:
The protagonist is okay. He tries really hard to be clever, and yet he often fails. Whether that's because of his own hubris or just the author not thinking things through and hand-waving things is up to the reader. Because he had no knowledge of skill levels, he maxed out his stealth skills at 5, but then it turns out that having just 3 makes one a world-class super-expert, making him horrendously OP early on. Later the author introduces his kryptonite in the form of people with the Instinct skill, who can detect him even if they can't see him, but he remains considerably OP.

The only other main character is Lavia, his companion/lover, and the estranged daughter of the man he had to kill, who tried to use her as a weapon due to her incredible affinity with fire magic. Their romance is... practically nonexistent, instead they immediately go from strangers to a couple with an active s*x life in the span of two or three chapters. She is your typical impossibly beautiful submissive waif who is nevertheless constantly jealous whenever the MC even talks with another pretty woman, who seem to flock to him like moths to a flame.

Other than that, most of the characters are defined by a couple of common traits and receive very little development before the MC moves elsewhere and ditches the supporting cast in the process. Their antics are reasonably entertaining, but nothing to write home about.

  • Plot:
The story has a fairly strong beginning. The reincarnation plot makes internal sense, and the MC has a clear goal in the form of rescuing Lavia before she would be taken in by the kingdom and turned into a weapon of mass destruction. However, once she is rescued, the plot loses most of its focus, and instead it is driven by the MC's whims. They don't want a knight executed for failing his duty, so he beats up a lot of knights in the capital to hide the tree in the forest. They want to go dungeoneering, so they go on adventures to raise his adventurer rank. They find relics based on modern technology, so they enroll to a magic academy to learn more about them. There is really no strong outside force driving any of the plot, just the MC's desire to "have an adventure" and his curiosity, which means that after a while the story becomes a slice of life where they get embroiled in other people's problems.

  • Final verdict:
This is a decently written, above average isekai adventure story. It's main weaknesses are a slapdash romance, weak supporting cast, and some occasional mood-whiplashes. If you are looking for a harmless, easy to read adventure story, you could do much worse. <<less

Tired of super OP MC who meddle with everyone else's businesses? In this series, the MC is strong but only in certain skills he has to work his brain to make full use of them and win battles. He also doesn't purposely meddle with people's business because of "justice" which I like a lot. Plus, most side characters have character and not brain-dead. Would recommend.

Good Parts

-MC typically smarter than the usual isekai protagonist

-MC uses planning and reflects on his mistakes

-Unusual stealth build

Bad Parts

-Overpowered, typical super-fast leveling

-Pretty clear, author is trying to follow the shonen mold.

-MC makes some ridiculously s*upid and naive decisions, so much for a "smart" character.

-How is able to get away with it? Maybe the author dumbed down the characters around him?

Ruthless but no too ruthless, h**ny but not a total defeatist virg*n. Our MC is a real person - kill if your life is at risk but not freely. Bang your gf but not chasing every girl's skirt.

I have high hopes for the female lead - lots of potential for character development. MC is pretty fleshed out but has some room to go. I do think some more side chatacter developments would be good.

The series handles side characters well though, if they're relevent theyll come back... if not then maybe... more>> youll never see them again. Why does every character introduced need to be developed and shoved in yoir face!

I have very high hopes@! <<less

It's pretty good for Japanese isekai.

Pro

    • Properly translated, and if you read many Japanese WN, you would understand how rare non cringy or weird English translations are.
    • The characters are actually above the average Japanese WN, and they felt a tad more interesting, complex and independent than the usual one dimensional ones.
    • The power MC has is interesting, and makes overall sense. As another comment said, it's obvious the author made some preparation outlining his magic system, and it shows.
    • The world, while not yet very developed, seems interesting.
    • MC isn't the most clever person, but at least he's not completely ret*rded, has some personality. He's not a pe*vert, nor evil, always a plus. And he actually has goals, not just being around randomly doing stuff.
Con

    • Overall too simple.
    • MC is still too s*upid for my tastes.
    • No one is questioning MC background.
    • Spoiler

Sudden s*x scene. I mean come on author, learn on how to get to that properly.

It is a good novel all around that shows a cool and not so beta, but still a little beta, MC doing bad ass things and gives just enough mystery and fluff to balance out the whole thing.

The romance is decent, I don't have any opinion on romance since it is something I generally avoid in novels, but this novel does it semi-decent. Though if the Lavia girl (MC's Lover) is removed, which will make the MC not be tied down as much by her and in return make certain... more>> plot elements of the story not happen, the story will still be almost the exact same and will just need a few tiny tweaks to fit things together again to fill in the little bitty gaps in the story that she influenced. She is literally almost nothing to this story, but fluff material after they left the town.
Spoiler

(The town of Pond which is where the whole story pretty much starts if you don't include the realm of the departed which is more like a prologue that can have deep meanings into the plot later on, but that would be way into the future when the MC starts messing with divine beings)

I'm happy it most likely won't become a harem and the characters are actually a little fleshed out, but the author really likes to surround the MC with chicks, thankfully the author fixed it a little by introducing the other male characters who I actually like a fair bit

which made the novel a little more even on the ratio.

I like the politics and the unpredictability that the author does with their story and how the world seems only semi-dead, there is some nice world-building, but the MC is still the center that moves most of the world, especially the politics. Overall a good story and I highly recommend trying it.
Spoiler

A few things seem forced and s*upid like the s*x scenes and how everyone just responds, also when they do start it is usually an arrogant as*hole or just a few words that have almost no substance.

One of my favorites. Consistent, great world-building, clearly defined arcs, character growth, characterization, etc. Just reread it from 1 to 414 this week.

The WN seems to be over (says it's on hiatus), but the last couple of arcs posted could be treated like epilogue / continuing-adventures-of after some of the more epic arcs.

On to the Light Novel!

I started reading this as they I read that the MC is somewhat similar to Kirito. Like Kirito, he is the classic introvert loner character but doesn't get bullied and actually the type that come on top, yep the classic black haired protagonist. I was already expecting a bit teen-ish story like SAO so that's fine by me, I'm already prepared for lord edge. Yep I got what I want, he doesn't get thrashed around by bullies and quite strong. The story is also a bit interesting and decent power... more>> concept add to it.

But one thing ruins the whole thing for me.. I'm quite fine with the Lavia girl as his girlfriend but the other girls is just annoying that I don't even want to reach the part that they're going to be part or his harem. I like harem but not like this, all girls are bunch of two dimensional characters at it's finest. Most girls are annoying, some are being too overly familiar and Concern to the MC become bothersome and also have lots of Damsel in distress moments specially the Healer girl, she fell in love to the MC because she read/wrote a book about being saved by a Prince and guess what? She got saved by the MC and then she started to see him as her Prince Charming! Jesus.. This is how romance works in books of fairytales meant for 5 year olds! I was expecting teen logic but they gave me a story with a f*cking preschooler level. But wait.. Not finished yet, falling in love after seeing the MC save her isn't the end, she suddenly started acting like a h**ny dog drolling asking to be ravish by the MC in that very moment, not even 10 seconds passed and she already ready to give her body to him while they're in the middle of dangerous situation, Oh and you might want to know her background? She is a healer who grew up and was educated in a church which doesn't make any f*cking sense, she should be someone filled with God in her head, no I'm not asking her to be a pious believer or something but she could at least have one or two traits that connects her character to her background story but nothing, the author decided that she would be a h**ny type of a girl, her past is basically nonsense and it's just author's bullshits by creating a background that doesn't match the character. If this wasn't a harem I might be able to take this despite the annoying girls as the side, but the fact that this is a polygamy novel dashes all hopes that those annoying girls won't be part of the harem.

Aside from the girls, the guys are even worst. If girls were two dimensional characters, then the men in this story is completely one dimensional and their existence is only meant to oppose the MC. They're like a mild version of chinese cultivation mobs. Author didn't even bother giving any background story about them and Author basically nerfed the intelligence of the characters to make the MC look smarter for the readers. Overall, it's a novel with a decent main character but filled with garbage harem members. It's also quite a waste for the power concept as it was quite interinteresting.

Oh the setting is in a medieval-like world so where f*ck those plastic bags come from? <<less

Barely out of a 4, as for most of the series, it's a bit better than your average isekai (which I would say would be a mid-2 to low-3). In terms of its plot, world building, power system, and character interaction, it's nothing special, but it gets the job done.

The beginning was interesting, as it added something to make the MC seem like he deserved the power fantasy that followed. Typical of isekais though, the MC doesn't exactly change much, really only at the beginning (by going from a Japanese... more>> kid to someone accustomed to the other world) and somewhat near the end. The FML could've been expanded on as a character, as while she served her purpose, she didn't feel as much as a character as some reoccurring side characters did. So if you want a series for character development, this definitely isn't the one. There are a couple exceptions, but they're all side characters who don't exactly impact the plot after the arc they are introduced in. 3.

The series has the harem tag, but
Spoiler

a whopping total of two girls join his "harem" and he only romances the first one,

[collapse]
which could be seen as either a negative or positive, depending on your preferences.

The world this story was in wasn't completely bland. Each nation had it's quirks while not being too over the top. The overarching lore of the world, while not tying too directly into the current state of it, made me a bit interested in learning more with the sneak peaks that were shown. Too bad that any elaboration or closure never happened. 3.

Minor Spoilers

Spoiler

Towards the end, for the second to last arc, it expands the world quite a bit by introducing a new continent. And while it wasn't executed perfectly, it did an adequate job for what could be called the climax.

Going to be honest, I only skimmed through the last arc as I felt the early chapters of this one boring. However, in what I did pick up, nothing was really resolved. The overall plot didn't go anywhere, and tons of questions that couldn't have possibly be answered in a random gold mine town in the countryside were left hanging. The last arc felt more like a filler arc belonging around chapter 250 than being the finale.

[collapse]

If I actually remembered what events took place in this series after reading it as it got translated over the course of two years while reading a whole bunch of other WNs, I might have bumped the overall score up to a mid-4 (or if the last arc actually did something). As for a "turn your brain off for a couple minutes a day and have fun" kind of series, it would definitely receive that 4.

Props to the translation team, they kept the releases consistent and the grammar was pretty good (thank god the site has a dark mode). 4.

I would definitely recommend Overlimit Skill Holder, the web/light novel that the author wrote (I assume) after finishing this one. The character development and world building, and basically everything else, improved from this series to that one (I could easily give that a mid-4). Novelupdates lists the two as being in the same franchise, but the connection between the two has yet to be seen. <<less

I'll give it a 4 stat because it was pretty good. The story itself was rather chill with the last two arc's being the climax, the main character didn't attract literally every female character in the story and even if he did attract some, only 2 ever actually stuck around and he only got together with 1. However... what the hell was that ending? No closure, no answer to any of the mysteries of the series, character relationships were left halfway done still and there were many characters we were... more>> meant to see again but just didn't. The author prematurely ended the series just so he could go focus on his other one. Seriously, this series ends with the MC finishing an arc and simply walking away with his lover and friend to go onto the next adventure. We don't learn anything about the gods, the dragons, what the churches purpose is, how far he actually levels up and so on, leaving me with a boat load of frustration. I wanted to see if he at least eventually gets with the other girl or just flat out rejects her and they stay friends but of course we don't get to see that. What about his heavens messenger class? There was that girl in the B ranked party he's friends with desperately looking for that class. What about the other otherworlder girl who's also part of that party? Are we just gonna leave the fact she travelled back to Japan alone? Hell, are we even gonna discuss the portal to Japan? No? Just me who wants to learn about this stuff? Well shit. Loved everything except that the author abandoned this series to go work on Overlimit. <<less

I honestly don't get why people are looking down on this so much. Yeah, it 'feels' like a generic japanese isekai where around chapter 80 you 'feel' like you know the direction it's going to take.

But, no, you're wrong. There is no all-powerful MC. There is no 'harem' MC. The protagonist holds true to his own character and weaknesses. He isn't an 'average man' where you just have to project yourself onto. His choices don't conflict with his character. The people around him don't simply just bow down in worship.

If... more>> there is anything 'protagonist' about him, it's his insight into a situation. But from early on it's shown that he's pragmatic and focused on evidence over anything else. And he isn't all-knowing. He has things wrong, tho, granted, not to serious effect.

Give it a chance till around c150. If by then you're not convinced, drop it. <<less
