SotOD can stand on its own. It is an interesting story that was bogged down by way too many meandering archs and unnecessary scenes.

There was so much digital ink wasted on conversations between Old Madam Ren and which ever shu child/concubine/idiot servant she was talking to... So many pages dedicated to brainless misses and princesses that hated the FL/ wanted the ML... Way too much time spent with cannon fodder at various social events that had no real effect on the plot.

With a tighter narrative and better editing this could... more>> easily be half as long but twice as thrilling.

Read this because you want a fun rebirth tale. Do not read this if -like me- you were expecting something as good as QSCK's rebirth novels.

And please, please stop comparing every rebirth-revenge novel to Malicious Empress and Wei Yang! <<less

I enjoyed it very much! Schemes were fun, romance was satisfying, and I enjoyed that the villians were a good mix of serious crazies and people who could be compromised with. I also loved the friendship between FL and Jinglin - good girlfriends in these novels are underrated. The fleshing out of secondary characters and their romances was also very well done. Even though second ML was a real pain in the bu*t early on, his epilogue chapter made me kind of tear up. The only thing I wasn't keen... more>> on was that ML XJX (the black-bellied one with the white tiger) and other ML XJX from Malicious Empress (the black-bellied one with the white tiger) were basically the same character. When you look closer there are setting and personality differences between them, but I would have preferred that their characters didn't remind me so much of each other. I'm not sure which came first since the novels were published at around the same time. <<less

Loved the story. Well thought out in every way. Amazing read per reviews below.

It’s one of those ones where whilst I love the main couple I will always be thinking about the 2nd male lead.

Okay, this was great at first. The beginning was beautiful... and the translator has simply done an amazing job, with all the additional pictures, references and explanations. But the story, the plot as such... couldn't hold up similar standards. It was like a graph heading downwards. Probably because I find it too similar at times to The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage, I simply couldn't sit back and enjoy the read. Consciously or unconsciously, I was forever on the lookout for such parallels.
Which took out the simple joy from reading, and eventually turned it into a chore that I had to get over with.

It’s a 3.5

Story was quite interesting and well developed. It’s mostly focused on courtyard politics, competition between girls, etc. There is also a bit of court politics but not the main focus. Romance is extremely slow and the world building is a huge chunk of the novel. Loved the FL and ML, none of them were behaving in idiotic leads. It’s worth reading.

The second lead syndrome this book gave me has been so insurmountable. I demand a rematch 😭😭😭

Second lead syndrome aside, this story was a living breathing thing to me, and the love I have for it is unprecedented.

I can't believe I've read all 540 chapters in just a week.

The characters and story progression were so well thought out. I can't remember how many times as I was reading through the various characters' schemes and plans, I had to stop and just take a minute to marvel at how complete, how... more>> fulfilling and how neatly the author ties everything together.

It's a shame that it took me this long to find this book, but it's even more depressing that I might never find a story as thrilling as this. <<less

It was good but the female lead was honestly too OP. I don't know why more people weren't suspicious of her. Like with all the things that she know, she totally was not like a girl her age given all her circumstances. I also did not like the second male lead. He was way too aggressive and always invading her personal boundaries. She was very clearly uncomfortable with him and he was constantly uncaring about her surroundings. Not cute.

Still in process of reading, up to now I can rate this similarly to Malicious Empress of Military Lineage, the only differrence is translation and/or the ptose in MEML is oh higher quality.

I like that problems are not immediately solves and FL faces multiple challenges from multiple side characters at the same time, it gives an intricately woven story compared to the Arc format we re all too familiar with.

I also like that we actually still dont know what happened in the past life.
