Professor System has issued a mission: to rescue the gentle, kind and tragic protagonist shou of the novel “The Exceptional Furnace”.

Song ‘Scholar-Tyrant’ Qingshi: “Don’t worry, Professor! I can definitely ensure the patient’s recovery!”

In the Immortal Realm:

Song Qingshi praised from the bottom of his heart: “My patient is the kindest and most beautiful little angel in the world.”

Yue Wuhuan quietly washed the blood from his hands and smiled softly: “En.”

Song Qingshi swore from the bottom of his heart: “As a doctor, I will never covet nor take advantage of my beautiful patient!”

Yue Wuhuan took full and complete advantage of the doctor and smiled softly: “En.”

Song Qingshi affirmed from the bottom of his heart: “Under my loving care, the patient will never be blackened!”

Yue Wuhuan secretly hid his monstrously evil thoughts and smiled softly: “En.”

At that inextinguishable summit, upon thousand and thousands of soul lamps, he sat on the god’s throne of white bone, guarding that piece of stone.

“You are the only one in this world who treats me tenderly.”

“And so, you are the only one I treat tenderly.”

Scholar-tyrant Song was absolutely delighted: “Professor! Can I get full marks?”

Professor System exploded: “You fool! You saved the wrong person!”

This novel is so GOOD

but it is not for everybody. There is a lot of mentions of s*xual abuse (SA) and because of that, s*xual trauma. It’s not between the main characters though. Our ML had to go through that : (

Personally, SA makes me very sad and uncomfortable. But this novel is about how our MC heals the ML of his traumas and ultimately, it’s about his journey of healing from his past.

And I’m glad I didn’t drop it. I feel like you really have to push through it.... more>> Please believe me that this novel did a very good job of tying up the loose ends. Literally EVERYTHING makes sense at the end and there’s an insane amount of foreshadowing that I missed. Every “why” question you’ll ever have while reading this novel will be answered, and I found that very impressive.

I would like to thank the translator of this work. They did a wonderful job. The author is very poetic and the translator really did the author justice.

Also, the author make every single character significant. Even people I thought was just mention in passing and thought I’ll never hear about again. WRONG, the author somehow was able make what I thought was a a cannon fodder in a fully fleshed out character in like, 2 chapters. Every single character this author writes is vivid and alive.

I usually read novels that is focused on romance (need something to fill the void) and I feel this novel was the perfect amount of dog food and plot. The relationship between MC and ML was SO good. Very sweet. Please read this in its entirety. It’s so good, I promise <<less

I enjoyed this story a lot more than I expected. I can tell that the author put a lot of effort into developing the plot, there's a lot of twists and turns that surprised me. It's amazing how well the scenes are written too. There's a lot of sad, funny, and sweet moments in the story that hit me in my kokoro in a good way.

Many complained that they don't like how oblivious the MC, but personally I find it very funny and entertaining instead of frustrating. There's a reason... more>> why his personality is like a stone anyways ;) <<less

MC has a high iq but it's a bit odd because he can't read the people around him, I find it annoying.

Honestly, for transmigration novels, I personally don't like how the author writes about the transmigrant's attachment to certain characters based on the past (which is not himself).

For example, Long An, if he knew that the soul of the person he cherished so much had been arbitrarily replaced by someone else wouldn't that feel unfair? And I think it's sad and annoying at the same time (I haven't read through... more>> to the end so don't know if Long An has finally realized he's been replaced or not)

ML is very narrow, I usually like slick petty people but this time I didn't like ml's setting because MC is too s*upid and can't read people. Practically they are on different levels so I was depressed when I read it. <<less

Was a really nice read! The plot was interesting, not too confusing and the MC/ML are adorable.

I enjoyed reading this very much because it shows how even people who are 'beyond saving' are worth healing and saving. How even the most unhinged characters also deserve love. Apart from that, I also loved the way the author breaks through the "bed position = role in relationship" and the heteronormativity aspect most danmei novels sadly have...

The side characters were also interesting and not just randoom people here to help the MC/ML do... more>> sh*t... <<less

just finished reading and it was so breathtaking that I was immediately compelled to write a review before my sh*t memory takes over..

in the beginning I had some reluctance since I read reviews about how the MC was dumb and did nothing to alleviate ml’s trauma and was basically thrown around because of his lack of emotional intellect apparently. I persisted despite hating these types of tropes because the writing/translations were great. Throughout the story and more so towards the end, it was revealed that the lack of emotional intellect... more>> was made up for by his passion for gaining intellect as a whole. He tries his best to make up for the shortcomings; in this case, his inability to express and understand the emotions and intentions of others allow him to become more emphatic than any other character. This story allows us to scope in on the demons within, insecurities and traumas that shape our perspective of life. Twisting mythical and historical folklore of fate with the theme of persistence in face of failure, the importance of kindness is heavily conveyed.

this story is extremely easy to comprehend, the author spells out for readers exactly enough of what they want to convey, everything comes full circle, everything is answered. Only people who really make an attempt to understand will find that there is always more to what is spelled out; throughly appreciating the connections, symbolisms, and choice of wordings made, makes this story all the more exciting to read. I recommend this story to those who find joy in understanding several complexities, finely spun together to make a large web of delight. This story is by means not a light read. Every time I thought so, it would take a sharp dive into the painful experiences of each character. They were well-written, realistic to each their own making the story come alive.

all the trauma and violence and suffering (in the first 60-70 chapters or so) made me want to drop it so many times, I was skeptical whether it would be worth reading or not. But then the overlying plot started revealing itself in bits and I just decided to toughen through it. Definitely worth it, their romance is comparable to heaven official’s blessing xie lian and hua cheng, fate and destiny changed forever. It was so well written, when they suffered my heart suffered, when they smiled my heart smiled. My heart was moved a lot by this book. Its a lot shorter than heaven official’s blessing (a blessing literally) and compared to how I felt that the ending to heaven official’s blessing and the weird time shift to the past was extremely awkward, this book ties everything up very beautifully and achieves the same effect as heaven official’s blessing.

anyway to summarize: this book isn’t for the faint of heart. It divulges into the human mind and emotion to the extreme, to the point that it may make you drop it. A lot of questionable things happen that may seem as minor instances. However, with strong will to finish the book and simultaneously willing to understand the complexities scattered throughout like a puzzle, only will you find the end worth as a reward. <<less

This novel is so good.

When I read it, I just remember that I already read it before, I just forgot. After I finished it, it feels so satisfying.

The story between MC and ML is so sweet and full of heartache to achieve happiness.

Thank you for translating.

The end, the twist, is somewhat overturned a lot of things in the story. You might actually feel mislead, cheated, and ended up thinking "what is the point of this and that?" but I personally find it's really smart, meaningful, beautiful, and just glad that "everything is gonna be okay after all" and "so there are meanings in things that they have to go through."

The climax is really great, the side pairings are realy cute (include homo and hetero pair), and the extras are very satisfying.

I came for the troupe... more>> "saving and mending your love interest who is broken beyond relief and becoming the only one in their eyes" especially since the broken one with such past is the gong for once. This is even contrasted with another character with similar past but is a shou for another gong.

But saying it's only for the troupe is really cold isn't it? Well it's just fiction after all.

But I ended up with real feeling for the characters.

Yue Wuhan's tragedic past isn't just some cheap device so the MC can save him and be the only one there for him.

Song Qingshi is genuinely sympathize and hurt for him, not just because of his mission. He constantly feels distressed for Wuhan and never feel any gratification for saving him. He often feels inadequate and useless for only knowing how to cure Wuhan's body and not his heart.

On the other hand, Wuhan's trust and attachment towards Qingshi might feel a bit too fast and unbelievable, but I don't dare to guess or govern what a Yue Wuhuan can feel. I'm just glad he isn't so broken that he is unable to feel love.

It's also explained later with a big demonstration and even the person said it himself that he has special trait that "he will fall for and obsessed with Song Qingshi as long as he saved him."

The idea "falling for your saviour" also applies to the second male lead who is actually barely a second male lead (spoiler for the end).

This is also huge theme, but fortunately not everyone are like them because there are a lot of saving happening there to the side characters haha.

Yu Wuhan's revenge is satisfying, his blackening is saddening, yet he's still able to be so adorable and have a healthy relationship with his partner which is also majorly contributed by Song Qinshi's relaxed view on some matters, sincerity and his unconditional love. Anyway they're just a very lovely and fluffly couple.

This is the troupe "becoming the savior and the only one for him" but the one getting obsessed become a better man instead just the typical obsessed yandere.

Of course as a fiction, this story is not without flaws. In fact I found more flaws as I rereading, but once it get emotional I just don't want to write those flaw as if it's really matter anymore.

sigh but I still have to write some of it

As I mentioned, because of the twist in the end, a lot of setting became overturned, useless.

Spoiler

But you wouldn't feel it the first time since you wouldn't know the end.

It's interesting when I first read it, so I guess that's what matters the most for first time reader.

For rereader, it'll be surprising to realize how much those discarded settings are actually written in too much details. You just want to skim it the second time you read because you know it wouldn't matter haha.

[collapse]

The action or plot for xianxia setting doesn't always have the same quality.

Some plot in the middle were a bit boring, and you just wonder when will they get together.

Spoiler

Yue Wuhan's perspective seems really cool and full of action and so xianxia, but a lot of it are skipped since after all it'll be too stretched out. But maybe it'll works as well, who knows?

[collapse]

For me I just couldn't stop reading because I was so attached with the characters and when they finally end up together it's really a happy occasion. Not disappointing at all.

Some characters' traits might be unlikeable or too much for some readers.

Spoiler

For exame Song Qinshi's inability to make social connections, An Long's brazenness, the heinous villains.

What? No, Wuhan is perfect. (Small voive: except maybe he's too lustful for our pure Qingshi)

[collapse]

Some traits or toupe are really did overused tbh. But I wouldn't trade them because there are also good things about those traits.

If you're professional or know more about mental health or think about it more seriously, some stuff might be seems illogical and unbearable to you. But I think this much is bearable since you read the tags and know that small chance writer must knowledgeable in that area.

Closing words:

Author are good at writing stimulating theme, writing feelings, some interaction and romantic lines, good plot which connect and of course likeable characters. But a bit lacking in execution, pace and quality control, but not too much.

Hence 4 stars, 7/10 if I must.

There's no need for recommendation, I believe only a small amount of people aren't interested with the premise. And many of you will stick to the end just for those two. (If you still don't like it, don't worry there are many choices in NU that'll suit you)

PS: this is quite a late review, but I want to contribute something to my fav story. And there's no such thing as too many reviews, right? <<less

If you're on the fence about this novel, this is me encouraging you to go for it. People talked all sorts of s*** about this book in the reviews and I'm glad I ignored them, this was such a delight.

1. The abuse in the novel is really well handled, as are the long-term effects, and the warnings allowed me to hop over anything I wasn't comfortable with. (There wasn't much, the novel isn't graphic.) This is in part because:

2. The translator for this novel does such a good job. You... more>> might think that's icing on the cake and normally I'd be inclined to agree with you, but here? Not only are the translations excellent, but the notes, trigger warnings, layout etc. Are really high quality and it all makes a big difference in the reading experience. You WILL need to get the password from the Chrysanthemum Garden discord and read it on their site, but it's not difficult to sort out.

3. While the novel isn't explicit (it fades to black at around a 14A), you will not lack for spicy moments. Or dog food. Or humour! I found this really well balanced, actually. The stakes were always believable and I was invested in the mystery from start to finish. The plot and romance are relevant to each other, which helped keep it from getting bogged down in either.

4. This is strictly opinion and people can get mad about it but imo, MC is coded as autistic. Even better, ML doesn't care about how "odd" he seems, but doesn't condescend to him either. (The final reveal of how/why he behaves as he does means that there is a different canonical reason for his behaviour.) As an autistic person, this made it a particularly enjoyable read. Truly a beautiful story. You can tell the author had carefully planned the entire thing before writing, as they placed some hints about the final twist here and there. It's appreciated and shows skills. MC and ML are fleshed-out and interesting. They both have their own flaws and problems, but they're far from being unlikable.

The twist at the end was definitely something I wasn't expecting, though I had some theories and was close to figuring it out (I don't think it's because I'm particularly smart, but more that the author... more>> did a very good job at tugging us towards the right direction without being too obvious) . It's definitely very unfair to review and judge this particular story BEFORE reaching its very end. But I understand how some people may grow a little tired of it, since the last third of the story

may seem a little too "abrupt" and "different" from the rest, and a lot of people don't deal well with unfamiliarity. I completely understand, especially since I myself, I to force myself a little to keep reading, only because I knew the ending made the entire story worth it. Yes, the pacing may seem a little slow at times, and there is quite a lot of timeskips, but beside that, I have nothing bad to say about this web novel. Very talented writer, interesting and likeable main and side characters, and a very fascinating plot.

If you can stomach non-graphic mentions of underage/adult r*pe, physical/psychological abuse, s*avery, s*x trafficking and su*cide idealization, then read this. Trust me, it's worth your time. <<less

I just don't think any review that was written before the reader finished the entire book can be considered trustworthy. For if you dropped this book too early, you'd have missed out that these "inconsistencies" or dissatisfaction with how certain characters were characterised and written was actually deliberate.

Take this author's note from chapter 43:

Spoiler

First of all, don’t just say that the author doesn’t understand Wuhuan as a character. His psychological problems are very complicated — he has a highly-retentive memory, he’s clever and perceptive, prideful, a perfectionist, has strong desire for control, serious mysophobia, etc., taken together, they cause a variety of serious mental illnesses (at the same time, its part of his charm). If I was even slightly off in my understanding and control of his character, the Wuhuan who would have appeared would no longer be the one you’ve seen and liked.

Love and doting affection might resolve the psychological trauma of ordinary people.

This is not possible for Wuhuan.

.

.

.

An Long is an important trigger. His feelings are by no means simply to create some hellish scene or to have a lady-killer character design. I don’t like to making meaningless set ups. Every step was done thinking about how the next few steps will be.

[collapse]

I too, had my moments where I struggled to soldier on because the themes in this book seemed rather heavy, I was more looking for a story where I could mindlessly read because I am one of the many who belong to the generation of instant gratification. But from this note, you could tell that the author wasn't playing around with such heavy themes because she was in her angsty teenage phase. She didn't just take a bunch of tropes out from a hat and decided to play around. It isn't a story where it's very clear it's just projecting her own insecurities and is making things up as she goes along.

It's very clear that the author had a very definite direction in mind, a very clear-cut understanding of her characters. Sometimes, you read stories and you just know the characters are characterised this way only to serve the plot. There is no emotional depth, nothing intellectual about it. This isn't one of those stories. This one has a lot of world-building. So much, you don't actually realise it's world-building. After reading the final few chapters, you realise, the hints were there all along. Little innocuous things that seemed trivial and fillerish all had deeper meanings.

This is one of the few times I'm actually sad to have to say goodbye to the characters. To bid farewell to the world and to close the tab and "end" the story. I'd definitely revisit though, after checking the author's other work.

Also hats off to the translator for translating this because. This was... A lot. <<less

The other +5 stars reviews have stated what I want to say. Now I want to compliment the background story/the world building. If you are familiar with world hopping, system, transmigration, reincarnation, gods, mythical creatures themes, you will sure to quickly understand the world bulding/background and be amazed by how the author connects them and make a logical connection. I know that there are other stories with similar logical connection, but in this, it was explained clearly.

Wait there's alot more I want to list some things that I realy appreciate.

There are no tropes of couples in here. The couples in here are two unique people in live with each other. There is no labeling like oh he is the shou, he is weak, and so on. Like many of the other reviews said, this novel broke many tropes. MC loves studying. Although MC is seems to be a little fool but NO he is not. He is very open-minded. He is a doctor and act like a doctor. And he doesn't read the kinds of nonsense novels (except when he wants to learn something), so don't talk tropes with him. Also, I appreciate that the worlds' protagonists are not villified to make MC and ML shine. At first I don't like An Long, but gradually I realized he was like the ML and also gradually he become likeable character. Also also, there were no instant love, maybe they first had a favourable impression of each other maybe because of countless reincarnations being daoist companions. The part where MC was reincarnated again, where ML pretends to be a woman honestly I was a little disappointed but in the end I accepted it and I got no problems with it now. I was worried because I thought the ML pretending to be a woman will draggd on and will loss its taste. Fortunately, it did not, and that's yhe one more thing I like. The pacing of the story is just right for me. The no. Of chapters is also just rught for me, the themes of this novel is all my favorite. In short, this novel is very my cup of tea. And it did not disappoint me until the very end I can accompany the protagonists to their journey.

In other words 5/5 for this novel. ❣️

GOOD STORY AS A WHOLE. I couldn't give 4.5 stars so had to keep it at 5.

Going to put my review in points because I need to sort out my feelings for this:

  • MC and ML are well written.
    • MC is a bit silly but the best part is he has a reason to be so. So he's a transmigator, right? His origin story explains so much about why he is the way he is that there should no reason for readers to be upset over his personality (other than just preference so you do you, man.)
    • ML is a yandere but dang he be a respectful one. He does, in a way gaslight and lie to the MC but his hard limit is mentioned so many times (ALSO WITH LEGIT REASONS) and he never did MC harm. In fact, he probably did more trauma towards others in way of wanting to please MC.
    • The background characters are also well written. None of the characters that are mentioned as important (in the story) are bland, even characters that often appeared have been written well, and not as the crony-clones kind of characters.
  • Plot reveal very much whoa.
    • The story starts as a typical transmigation story, nothing really special UNTIL the plot around the life of ML is revealed and subsequently the MC's background. I love how MC tries very hard to heal ML after saving him, and he did it in a very objective way (tho personally it's also kinda subjective). MC's background reveal is actually amazing. The author thought out the whys of the story quite thoroughly.
    • The only thing I wasn't satisfied with is the fact that the MC somehow managed to just seamlessly fit into the character of the person he transmigated into, like the character is made for him instead of him having to fit into the character. There's no real struggle over that, but I guess it does make the story less focused on the MC at first. I do wonder if that's actually planned out by the author, to make it that readers read less into the MC for the grand reveal.

This has the fluff, the sweetness, the bit of angst and a nice story to match it all.

What I like the most is that they aren't only a cute dummy shou and a yandere evil gong. Each have a long history and actually reasonable development of their personalities that the story explains slowly and makes you feel that everything is so nicely connected.

The first 4 chapters gives you a taste of the suffering the ML went through (tl-san explains it before every chapter so that's a nice warning) and it's... more>> really saddening to read (not unbearable at all but for new people to angst it might be a bit painful to read). But everything gets more sweet and cute afterwards.

Of course there are secrets and mysteries throughout the novel but what you can be assured of is that the relationship between MC and ML is really one of the sweetest and they really care so much for each other that you can only cry of sweetness lol.

You will cry of sadness AND happiness. Also 99% of you will love how cute the MC is and you can only helplessly hope to put him on your palms to protect him. BUT! He's not your typical "weak and poor" MC, he's actually there to comfront everything for ML the same way ML wants to protect MC.

The honesty between both characters is also refreshing. Even if there're some unclear things the trust for each other grows with each chapter and is just really satisfying to read.

Overall this is nicely done. Some flaws are there to be the perfect novel plot wise. But relationship and logical point of view wise, this is one of the best in my opinion.

If you dread to read this because you're not sure to read heavy book plots I would say you should read a nice brainless fluffy novel and then comeback to read this so you're more willing after dumb-cute love plots lol.

This novel, compared to other long ones with heavy plots or painful relationships between MC nad ML, is actually not so difficult to read. The amount of chapters is nice and you won't feel the need of more prolonged ending.

You won't regret reading it! <<less

I love the author approach.

Tragedy does play a big part but it necessary has a part of the MC and ML journey in healing. There are many beautiful and moral messages in this story. I'm really happy that mental health is addressed and is taken very seriously. Other characters also have their part to shine.

It doesn't follow the cliche storyline hence I can enjoy the unexpected plot twist.

Big thanks to the translator, such an underrated gem. I highly recommend this with an open mind.

Well many comments say that some people's reviews are too excessive, but for me this is not entirely true.

Like I know the story itself only has a fairly general theme, but the way the author creates an anti-mainsteam plot which comes from a general-themed story is what makes this story deserves a near perfect rating.

I mean come on, surely everyone is already tired with Blood Dog plot which tells the story where ML always has a bitter experience whether it's where his entire family is killed or where ML is always tortured and become tr*sh.

Anyways if we talk about the flaws in the story. Personally, I think there are some parts that are sometimes not connected well (???) What I mean not connected here it's not about the story one.

It's more like the story is connected but sometimes the way the story connected was feels awkward.

Plus, The ending of the story is a bit unsatisfactory for me. <<less

To be honest I didn't expected much when I started the novel but I must say it was a pleasant surprise because it has such a good plot!

The tags are there because it has pretty heavy themes BUT it was for a reason. You can summarize this novel like that: EVERYTHING IS FOR A REASON, none of the characters nor situations are as random as they might seem.

About the MC, he's NOT s*upid. Although I get it why many got that impression, I can just say - as many other... more>> readers had- that you have to read it 'til the end. Reading even just half of the novel isn't enough to see how well thought it is. <<less

A really interesting novel with ups and downs. I specially liked the Ml, although he is possessive, he never hurt the MC and MC too is the best lover for Ml. At first I thought MC was very naive and didn't know a thing but I was wrong. He knows and tries hard to fix situations, never giving up.

The MC's prverence is Ml's strength.

I'll just say one needs to read quite a few chapters before forming any opinion about this novel cuz I saw many bad reviews, which this novel... more>> didn't deserve. The more further you read the clearer things become and atlast everything comes into sense. <<less
