Kaleidoscope of Death

It started off peculiarly; first, his domestic cat refused to let him cuddle it.

Lin Qiushi soon found that a sense of disharmony and incongruity began to pervade everything around him.

Then, one odd day, he pushed open a door, and he discovered that the hallway he was familiar with turned into a boundless corridor.

At both ends of this corridor were twelve, identical iron gates.

He pushed one of the doors

Thus, the story begins.

Ruan Nanzhu said to Lin Qiushi, “When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss will also gaze back into you.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Qiushi sank into deep contemplation. He then pulled down the zipper of his trousers and aimed at the abyss…

Ruan Nanzhu: “…Put your pants on properly!”

Super shameless, ill-pampered gong X Shameless, calm shou; a combination of double [or extreme] shamelessness.

Definitely the best bl novels out there. The picture of the novel itself is hinting what monsters the couple will encounter in each doors. And that infamous twist of true identity of ML is too effin good and most likely why ppl went crazy after reading that chapter lolololol

My first horror novel bl, I have a great appreciation for it even after reading other novels hahahaha.

and the protagonists do feel sad and cry, it is surprising because in other novels of this type, the death of the characters is not taken into account and the protagonists do not feel bad about it, which makes that the novel does not feel real. This novel is also "realistic" since not all the characters that you like end well, many authors of this type of novel do not dare to kill their characters, but this author does.

The protagonists are not OP and sometimes get hurt, even in two doors I felt that they were not going to get out of there, which is surprising.

In my opinion the characters are the strongest part of this novel.

Romance

Slow but satisfying, the fact
Spoiler

that at first they didn't want to say their feelings made me feel sad, but what made me feel worse was how and why they confessed :' (

Conclusion

The story is incredible and the doors in certain parts are scary.

The protagonists are not invincible which makes getting into the novel easier.

In addition, the translations are very good and are well understood even if you translate them from English to Spanish. <<less

as a fan of horror fiction, i’d say this is one of most dreadful pieces of literature I've ever read. It did a legitimate job at unnerving me, scaring me and shattering my heart. I did not expect the plot to contain such beautifully written macabre to the point I began questioning my own environment and projecting the characters’ situation onto my life.

you reach a point and realise how bleak this narrative is. It’s definitely not for the weak minded.

spoilers:

Spoiler

you become aware that the characters need to complete all doors to live blissfully but it contradicts with the reality that NO ONE has ever completed all 12 doors. So it’s as if we’re being told that the characters are destined for death. Whether they are are on their 5th door or fighting tooth and nail to survive on their 10. You witness characters be unwilling to bear the reality of their own mortality. That entering a door may provide extra moments to live your cherished life however, there’s still high risks that the moment before you entered that door were your last.

i honestly admire lin qiushi’s tenacity. He is truly an anomaly (and it’s mentioned several times by others). Maybe it’s because he has been offered the protagonist’s halo or plot armor that he manages to survive every door he enters albeit that assumption can be nullified by the fact he has been the target of many mu*derous attempts in the door and sometimes got out with his life on the brink of death.

ruan zuanhu is an enigmatic breath of fresh air. As the audience we know him as incredibly intelligent and perceptive dare I say perfect, with an affinity for campish traits while in the door. In reality he is stoic, ascetic and unapproachable. The authors does the barest minimum to inform us about him other than the fact that he’s skilled enough to enter 10 doors and more and that he’s the leader of the obsidian. Fortunately with lin qiushi’s presence, we begin to his glimpses at some of his past. How he’s been doing doors for close to 7 years and how’s he’s had to suffer the lost of partners and friends in his previous doors.

the author must have been exhausted writing all the characters in the story because to be honest xi-zi did an impicable job at bringing every character to life with their own quirks and idiosyncrasies. Every character is written to play a role and they play it immensely well. They choices drive the narrative and offers different human perspectives in regards to the door world. They instill fear in you, joy, anger, despair and even schadenfreude.

Spoiler

i am writing this review as I mourn the death of a cherished character. One of the twins. He was adorably written. He had childish charisma and enthusiasm with resulted in me wishing the best for him. Unfortunately I was still conscious of the narrative. And it made me anxious to think of him dying in the doors. The reality was that death was inevitable unless you completed all doors and it when it arrived, my heart shattered at the loss of an easily loveable character

i am overwhelmed with anxiety as I approach the end of the novel (the last remaining 10 or so chapters) because tht means i’ll have to witness them face the dreadful doors world with unimaginable amount of difficulty. I keep crossing my fingers hoping that the titular characters have enough plot armor to push them past the end and into the story extras. Let’s see what happens <<less

To be honest, the reviews here cover most of my thoughts on KoD - I agree with majority of the positive feedback, the praises and recommendations. This is a really good book. I had my doubts before reading it, I've read other unlimited flow danmeis and for some reason (probably because of the shounen-ai tag) I thought KoD is one of those action-oriented stories with very little romance if at all. I was very wrong.

The novel was recommended to me with words... more>> "You're gonna love it, the story has the most shameless ML" and that sold it for me.

GENERAL:

KoD is an intense story about life and death, about finding value in your existance, all heavy existential topics. It's gory, scary (although I wasn't scared I can imagine how most of the imagery might be disturbing), complex but also gives you time to breathe and laugh, which can be kinda rare for unlimited flow genre. The balance is truly great.

The core idea speaks to me and I liked it a lot (the doors). We're not really given any explanation basically for a whole duration of the book and it makes it even better imo, the idea is scary exactly because we don't know why the doors happen. As I was reading tho, I realised I'd like it even more if there were no other supernatural elements except for the doors - this is a trope I sometimes encounter in fiction and I call it "sprinkle of fantasy".

Spoiler

Imagine this - all of the characters live in a perfectly normal world, they live, they die, work, love etc. And it's just that some of them enter the doors for an unknown reason. Nobody knows why. It's a mystery that's never explained. At the same time there are no supernatural abilities like exceptional hearing ability, no parallel worlds with long gone loved ones, no NPC RNZ with his mission - just normal world and this one random thing that nobody can explain. I feel like, even if it seems like a major change to the plot it would paradoxically not affect the story that much. It's easier to come up with a supernatural explanation (for example why RNZ fell for LQS - I'd rather it was some mundane reason and not because he was metaphysically special or whatever). Ok maybe it doesn't sound as exciting now that I wrote about it but I still think I'd work just fine haha

[collapse]

That being said, I don't feel like the author overdid it. The story is coherent and flows nicely, the doors are scary but entertaining, I especially liked the fact that they were mostly based on real world urban legends/games etc. This and the real world facts snuck along satisfied my need for "mundane" elements.

CHARACTERS:

LQS (MC) is one of those calm mains maybe lacking in personality just a bit. Compared to e.g. Tang Mo from TEIO tho, he's behaving mostly naturally, has breakdowns, is scared, traumatized etc., which, even though he does not have a "strong presence" as a character makes him pretty likable and relatable. RNZ (ML) on the other hand can hardly be compared to any other character out there. The whole appeal of this gong comes from his two utterly different sides - the cold leader and the drama queen. Except for the doors themselves RNZ is the second main plot driving force. He really IS shameless and he really does what he wants. MC and ML work hard to become a power couple throughout the whole book and I'd say they succeed in 9th door or so.

Side characters are quite likable, most of them are not explored in depth but we get to know some of them to the point that we care about them. You will cry for at least two of them, but it's quite easy to foresee that very early.

ROMANCE:

Top tier. It's not flawless but I like that it felt natural, they both had time to develop their feelings, think about them, have their doubts, yet none of it caused any useless drama. There are A LOT of cute/funny scenes provoked by our shameless ML, so you won't starve even before the first kiss. What I absolutely LOVE about KoD is that after the MC and ML get together they really act like a couple and not hide/are embarrassed to show any affection. They kiss/hold hands/hug in public and I like it, it's mature. There are no s*x scenes tho, I found it kinda funny that the author wrapped it up each time with "and then they went to do the unspeakable". I was like "noooo, speak to meee D:"

THE ENDING:

Now, I don't agree that the author just "wanted to finish the story quickly" so they didn't put enough effort into writing 11th & 12th doors. To sum it up without spoilers - I think it made sense for those doors to be different and it did not spoil the whole experience for me.

Spoiler

Honestly I don't think 11th and 12th doors revolved that much around the main couple's romance - it is what you focus on, of course, cause it's the most "dramatic" and emphasized aspect of this arc BUT what made those doors difficult was the choice. It was not meant to be a bodily horror - it was a psychological horror: you either choose a fake life of a real death. You can't win, there's no solution/escape, you have to choose. It would be easier for some and more difficult for the others but tbh I would be disappointed if we got another gory story. The Hako Onna door was a perfect conclusion for the "classic" type of doors cause it forced the characters to think tactically, scheme and lie in order to survive. I found this door the most interesting but it also broke me, I was so mad at RNZ, waah.

[collapse]

All in all I enjoyed it a lot, it took me ~2 weeks to complete (after work and on the weekends), I was never bored or overwhelmed. Also, big shoutout to Taida and Zin for incredible translations, it was a pure pleasure.

Thanks for reaching the end, have a wonderful day! <<less

Had to take a break because of the forced contrivances.

MC appeared to me too dumb, his only qualities seemed to be his superhero-ish hearing, and the fact that he didn't ask questions only when it was convenient for the author, otherwise he'd be asking the dumbest questions and repeatedly too. He also seemed robotic and unfeeling and the romantic turn felt SO forced.

Then I powered through and arrived at the extras. On one hand, the extras resolved everything. But on the hand you can't write a book with a certain... more>> type of MC then write a completely different MC in the extras, like, what the f*ck.

Spoiler

*rant start* I like the amnesia trope! This narrative device would have been welcome if MC either had had a good interesting personality in the main story, or if his personality hadn't been so different, but they're like two completely different people and we only get a glimpse of the interesting one in the extras, like wtf! Reading this novel for me it was like seeing ML falling in love with a sunny, emotive, experienced, mature person, then approaching another person and being all gushy gushy and complimenting this other person for no reason at all. Then suddenly person 1 is back and it's like person 2 never exited. I get it that the intent of the author is to tell me that they conflated. But to me they didn't, they're too f*cking different!

[collapse]

Plot

4/5 Horror elements are great.

Smut

1/5 It's all scene-cutting without the sensual dimension I really liked in, for example, Global Examination. Very DIY.

Knives

1/5 if you read the extras, otherwise 0/5. <<less

i don't know what to say tbh. This may not be that great of a novel when it comes to the writing itself but all in all, it was actually really enjoyable. If you like something horror then you might want to consider it.

do remember to read the first few extra chapters tho. They're important to the plot

Honestly, really f*cking good. Much better than expected. Super sad though. I usually avoid LNs with the Tradegy tag bc I want a HE, but this one has a HE. It was super cute and sweet and actually really funny at times, but the twist at the end was really unexpected and kind of confusing. Loved this LN tho. Would 100% recommend.

I definitely recommend this as a must read. I'm so in love with this that I get nightmares all the time that I entered the door😂.

I love how the story progressed, every door plot twists, and mostly the angst and grievance from the death of your favorite characters.😭😭

Spoiler

I love the Obsidian twin so much that I cried for a long time about their death, even though I know that they ended up together but.. but... It left a scar on me😭

Also, Li Dongyuan I love him too. Although he's not a good guy but its a known fact that door players experienced death door so, his character is fully ok to me. He's cunning, handsome inside the doors, and cute outside the door. Its just that the author said that he got betrayed and boom he died in one of the door. I would definitely love it if the author fully explained the experience and death of some remarkable characters. For example, the woman who became the leader of the White Deer.

The other organizations, the rules of how the door can get stolen from its holder, and how can two or more persons can enter the same door together was also not fully explained.

[collapse]

But the story was truly captivating and addicting. I love every arcs its so creepy and funny that I love it so much.

I love the graphics scenes. I love how detailed the horror and death inside the doors that it gaved me nightmares..

I love the slow burn romance and the constant teasing.

I love the side characters
Spoiler

and I'm still mourning their death.🙂

[collapse]

But, final rating is definitely a five star. I love the up and downs of the story, the tragedies, the plot twist
Spoiler

Which I think the other reviewer didn't understand that much.

The other reviewers thought that the ML was the door but... In fact it was said in the novel that every door has a different guardian guarding them.

For example, in Woman of the Rain Arc the Madam is the guardian, in the Japanese School Tragedy part Sachiko is the guardian, the Slenderman was the guardian in the Remote Village Arc, the twin sister are the guardians in the Sister's Drum part.

So that explains that the ML RNZ is not the door! But the doors guardian ok!

[collapse]

This is definitely a must read novel! Don't rely on the others review because its full of one sided opinions. You need to experience and read it yourself to fully understand the whole story. But, I definitely assure that you won't regret reading this and instead will absolutely love this novel. 😉

I wish you a good reading experience and hopes that you will find other novels as wonderful as this.🥰 <<less

This is quite positively my favourite c-novel so far. Never for a single moment did I feel like oh maybe I can take a break now, which is how I end up feeling midway through most of the books I read. This story has the perfect balance of angst and fluff, horror and comedy, tragedy and romance.

Its as if the author knew perfectly well how much of the former her readers could handle, so she gratified us with the latter to tide us over, just until she could shock us... more>> again; the composition of this novel is brilliant.

The intensity of the story built up with the chapter count, but it doesn't feel overmuch.

The gore aspect is personally tolerable to me, after the beginning few arcs, it's easy to become numb to it, honestly. The worst/best arc for me is the one which
Spoiler

does not focus on blood or gore, at all. The Lady in Rain painting arc is truly terrifying to me because of how well the anxiety (and horror of your perception of reality being f*cked with) is written. Chilling.

[collapse]

The translation is also excellent.
Spoiler

The only negative thing I can think of is that the text sequence/language of 'opening the gate, finding your teammates' was repetitive. I don't know whether the usage of the exact same words each time was an authorial choice or if it just translated to english the same.

[collapse]

Highly recommended.

Great fun, complex female characters, character arcs for all the main characters. Great care made to the relationship the develops between the main pair, but the plot is not neglected, can't complain.

Gender views expressed can be a little "huh" sometimes, but still, good for the context.

Really good novel. Focused on the plot than romance. Wont read it again tho, some arc scared me a lot lol.

Good:

    • Each arc is interesting and well thought of.
    • Narration and dialogue is decently distributed. I didn't feel rushed nor felt the story taking too long.
    • Main characters has great synergy/chemistry. Both personality are... uhm.. flexible? like they aren't fixed to a certain stereotype. I hate it when Gong are just straight up "domineering" without other personalities lol.
    • Some of the side characters were integrated into the story really well. Even though they only show up in one arc, they're not easily forgotten.
Meh/Bad:

    • Loopholes. There's a huge twist at the ending (extras) that opened a lot of loopholes in the story. Or rather, unanswered questions. I guess the author wanted to leave it to the reader's interpretation
    • Spoiler

one particular loophole I didnt like was the twins' extra. It's basically an extra of a fabricated story about the twins INSIDE Lin Quishi's 12th door. It's because in that twins extra, they met Ruan Nanzhu AND Cheng Yixie was able to go inside the 11th door with an illusion world. We all know he's the npc of the 12th door only. It basically means the extra didnt actually happen and Cheng Yixie is still out in the real world alone.

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

Also, I'm confused about the "senior" since it was clear that Ruan Nanzhu only assumed Lian Quishi's role in the world but they didn't open the topic about the senior again. SO WHAT REALLY HAPPENED TO HIM??? Did he actually pass the 12th door???

Amazing. Truly, spectacularly amazing. Very good romance, character development, sensible plotlines, a ML that's not a scum, and a MC that's not too reliant on the ML. The ending was a TWIST, and I honestly could not have imagined that it would end like that.

Spoiler

I would have liked to see a bit more on how Lin Qiushi's life would've been without Ruan Nanzhu, though. We did get to see a bit of that, but I was kinda curious.

[collapse]

One thing I didn't get was how the doors worked, because the MC would be going to experience his 5th door so far but they said that he was on his 6th? Idk, I mean, I did skim the beginning where they explained the doors a bit, lol.

Oh! Also, contrary to the summary, he isn't shameless at all. That's entirely Ruan Nanzhu lmao. At the end (in the extras), it does mention
Spoiler

a bit on the "when you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes back" part in the summary, but it wasn't at all like what the summary led you to believe.

[collapse]
I was kind of disappointed because I do like shameless MCs or at least nonchalant (like, the one from Non-Human Seeking Re-Employment, Supernatural Movie Actor App, I Rely On Poverty, I Became a God in a Horror Game, QWTFOTD, I Rely On Kisses To Clear Survival Games, etc etc. You would notice that I also REALLY like somewhat-OP MCs lol).

Overall, KoD is fantastic and I would 100% recommend it! <<less

Oh my goooddddd.... it was sooo good. Every arc was interesting, and although the romance came pretty late, ut was very satisfying. The one thing I couldn't get enough is

The last arc. Biggest plot twist I'm telling you. I was awake at 3 48 reading this and I swear I screamed when it was revealed. The ending couldn't be more perfect. Although there are some blurry areas I didn't understand in the ending, it was still good. Interesting read. Advice- don't read it in one sitting. I read 50 is... more>> chaps in 2 days. Then I switched for light comedy modern bl for like, 2 weeks? Then I came here again and finished the whe thing in 2 days. So if you felt like it was too much in the middle, go read something light.
Spoiler

Cheng qianli died. I freaking cried.... his death hurt me more than anything. Tan zaozao also went away. Her death was very pretty. There's this line I particularly loved-

Fantastic novel, any spare time I had was spent binge-reading this. Ruan Nuanzu & Lui Quishi

Loved the MC & ML's relationship, they were both so capable & the fact they they understood each other's intentions was great. Also this book does humour right!! the ML's cross-dressing's hobby is just so funny.

some of my thoughts about each of the doors they went into:

Spoiler

First door: what a way to introduce the doors! nothing like waking up to a creepy lady to scare you. Also the entire scene surrounding the temple & that gigantic lady was terrifying... f*ck that NPC who gave them the wrong instructions to get them killed.

Spoiler

Flitcher's bird: Not too bad, I can imagine a nasty bloodshot eyeball staring at me. Also that one guy who got dragged down the toilet r.i.p. And ew can you imagine seeing a nasty bloody cake like they describe.

Spoiler

Sister drum: ew ew ew, skinless people/ being skinned alive is so nasty. Blade rain is like the coolest thing (but also painful too aparently). Also that bit at the end when MC see that mass of skin staring at him from the window, I would die of fright.

[collapse]
Spoiler

Woman in the rain: this painting is too scary irl I see why people complain about it. Also the boss NPC of the door just was kinda funny getting all fustrated that she couldnt do anything when MC & ML were challenging her. BUT OMG when she nearly got MC I was like..... OH NOOO

[collapse]
Spoiler

Satchan: Aww poor satchan. all she wanted was revenge. Boys suck.

Spoiler

Slenderman: thought it was kinda weird to have slenderman as a story but oh well. This was probably the least exciting door for me. Why did he wear a top hat???

Spoiler

Waverly hills Sanatorium: mental hospital? yes please. Scary nurse jumping off the building every night? no thanks. But the ending of this arc, where everyone started trying to attack them, ughh you can IMAGINE the horror.

[collapse]
Spoiler

Mirrors: urgh big fright if I looked in the mirror & my reflection moved how did MC stay so calm. So sad we didnt get to see more of the siblings after this (kinda would have been cool to see how the sister got trapped). So tense when MC got trapped in the door but then ML went and saved him <333

[collapse]
Spoiler

River God: Scary lady making oil out of humans for lamps. Also that one guy was such a d*ck hiding everyone's lamps so they all might die. So annoying that he shot MC & stole his hint.

Teru Teru Bōzu: Why they gotta be so ugly wahh I know its to troll the bad players but please. Also what a duo for teaming up & secretly indirectly killing the ppl responible for MC's best friend's death. Ppl''s heads being cut off to act as weather dolls.

[collapse]
Spoiler

Sculptures: WTF men are dicks. Girl just wanted to be with her man.

Spoiler

Hako Onna: Looked up the picture for her & was so scared!! I thought that mole was supicious all along when we started opening up 3 chests at once.... but having 2 moles I didnt see that coming. But ahh the moment when RNZ was trapped & were saying there goodbyes & MC's reaction was like woah (but also hey ML cant be dead dead right?)

[collapse]
Spoiler

Minotaur: Ew rotting fish is so nasty & I was so concerned for everyone at the end when they all started eating it & started to grow fish scales. Wish MC was able to save more ppl but anyway they got out alive okay.

[collapse]
Spoiler

Door 11: WTF WTF WTF!! during door 11 I was like okay theyve gone back to their orginal selves when the first entered door 1, but at night all their past door bosses & dead acquaintances come back to life and either try to kill you or help you. Thats cool. Cute how ML & MC were girlbossing their way through the ghosts. The key being in the clock very clever. What I dont understand is door number 12, like RNZ's explanation that HE was the 12th door's NPC & when he left the door sealed itself & how he met LQS before?

[collapse]

Spoiler

EXTRAS: the twins extra is so sad, but very interesting to see how their story played out properly. ZYQ & BM's relationship is kinda cute. Also im living for MC & ML's addiction releasing their inner drama queen & being so dramatic hehe

5 because of the amazing translation (especially second half by Zin).

Normally I'd give this a 4.5, had the translation simply been good. But it's top-tier.

Overall an excellent escape room/puzzle/infinite flow type story. This story for the most part utilizes a lot of horror-element genres. It's not simply a thriller, but really more like horror with lots of disgusting and graphic elements to stimulate readers. Thus, I don't recommend this if you're easily scared or don't enjoy that genre.

That said, I personally enjoyed the MC and ML a lot. ML is... more>> a vivacious cross-dresser and MC is pretty normal for the most part (except sometime he has very dull emotions, which made me suspect all sorts of weird things about him, it was interesting how that got explained).

Spoiler

In the big twist in the extras, there was somewhat of an explanation on why the MC seemed to have such high adaptability and somewhat muted reactions since he'd forgotten his past and that he was an expert to begin with.

[collapse]

I really enjoyed that the MC was first "carried" somewhat by the ML, but also had his own growth process and went into challenges by himself. Not a lot of stories successfully portray this type of development, so watching the MC go from clueless to expert was very satifying.

Some of the weaknesses (or intentional mysteries left by the author) was in the wrap-up; I would have preferred a stronger resolution, such as:

Spoiler

An explanation on how the door NPCs had so much power and could eventually just leave their post and actually enter the real world.

How come other door NPCs didn't do the same? And if they did, wouldn't the doors eventually just break down and fall apart cause all the OP NPCs left?

[collapse]

Spoiler

Also the illusory world in the final door didn't really seem connected to why the doors existed and could prolong someone's life in the real world. There was no cohesive explanation, just two completely different concepts forced to co-exist because Reasons.

For example, if the doors had the power to prolong someone's life or change their fate, then what gave it that power? Why would that power be connected to the illusory world? The author only gave a half-hearted, "oh it just exists cause maybe the NPCs feel bad for making people suffer through the doors" which really didn't fly well as part of the climax/ending.

A better explanation would have made the story stronger overall.

Nevertheless, I greatly enjoyed this story. It was a fun ride! <<less

As many others have stated, the romance is a very slow burn, and not particularly explicit until the end. Though I am a fan of yaoi, the real draw in this story is absolutely the world-building -- despite a few small inconsistencies, the author tries their best to create a logical setting. The puzzles are not just thrown in your face, but are possible for the audience to decipher with the hints given to the MC's team, making it a very enjoyable read regardless of the romance (which is also... more>> kind of sweet).

I slept at 7am binge-reading a puzzle arc cause I couldn't stop solving it halfway, lol. <<less

This is my first horror-themed BL novel and I'm glad I've decided to read this. I cried so hard despite it being a horror-themed. I really love all characters in this novel. The author has the talent of letting you fall in love with the characters even if they're not the leads. There are a lot of things I wanted to say about this but my emotions as of this moment can't keep up. I just finished reading everything, including the extras so it still hurts me.

One thing's for sure,... more>> give this novel a read and you'll definitely enjoy this. A reminder tho, kindly read the tags first for the trigger warnings. <<less
