Kaleidoscope of Death

It started off peculiarly; first, his domestic cat refused to let him cuddle it.

Lin Qiushi soon found that a sense of disharmony and incongruity began to pervade everything around him.

Then, one odd day, he pushed open a door, and he discovered that the hallway he was familiar with turned into a boundless corridor.

At both ends of this corridor were twelve, identical iron gates.

He pushed one of the doors

Thus, the story begins.

Ruan Nanzhu said to Lin Qiushi, “When you gaze long into the abyss, the abyss will also gaze back into you.”

Upon hearing this, Lin Qiushi sank into deep contemplation. He then pulled down the zipper of his trousers and aimed at the abyss…

Ruan Nanzhu: “…Put your pants on properly!”

Super shameless, ill-pampered gong X Shameless, calm shou; a combination of double [or extreme] shamelessness.

So can what I say?

It is weird for me to partially agree with both the good and bad reviews, but it seems that this is indeed the case.

I'll just list the pros and cons. I feel like this novel emotionally tired me (in a good way mostly) even though the substance is not great, I want to at least give a review (minor not very important spoilers). User Celissiye (one of the top reviews of this novel) has a very accurate take of this novel; I would recc y'all read... more>> it too. Cons:

    • When I read the first arc, I had noticed the author already had a few plot holes she didn't bother explaining and rather let the reader figure out themself (not a lovely experience btw) in a poor manner. That should have been a warning sign to me, but everyone yelled that "this novel was so good" I decided to give some leniency.
    • Then the subsequent arcs came. There really is no mind-blowing puzzle-solving here. It's just a combination of luck, courage, and them using the skills given to them by doors to"open the door" with their "found key". MC doesn't really do the thinking when the ML is near him in the doors; he kinda just lets ML take him whatever even when left alone he can think. Didn't really like that feeling of ML kind of hard carrying the aspect of solving the mystery when together with the MC. It overall and honestly felt the author was trying to craft some mind-blowing mystery, but she just wasn't good at it. There was some mystery involved, but nothing that engaged you.
    • Not really a con but like everyone says, MC is NOT shameless. Thick-skinned sure and can adapt well to both the horror and drama plays enacted by the ML, but not shameless. That title is solely reserved for the ML. A pity, I was really looking forward to a shameless MC like that in the summary; it's the thing that attracted me to this novel.
    • The 11th door. Everyone had complaints about this. I do too. Not because of the content and challenge within the door itself. I thought it was clever the author decided to approach the door like that. It was the fact--it was the fricking fact--it felt more like a door to highlight the MC's and ML's undying love for each other. Give me a break. I'm here for horror, not romance. The fact that their horrific encounters eventually got boiled down to "they've been running away from monsters all night" (legit the author just summarized it like that; even summarized the MC "nearly dying" just with those words in quotation) and "I'm afraid of losing you! + "I'm never going to leave you" and all that sappy shit. That is why people say the 11th door is disappointing.

It eventually loses that horror element.
    • The extras. My god the extras. The last chapter of the novel was lackluster to be honest. And then the extras. Jesus christ. The author was quite literally like, "the amount of plot holes I have is not enough, so let us tack on this horrifying plot twist that makes no logical sense and only adds a gazillion plot holes and clears up one tiny abnormality in the book". It's a bit sad on my end to see the author taking this approach instead of clearing up all the unexplained plot holes her novel has.
Pros

    • Now after tearing down this novel, let us start with the good things. First off: the horror element is mostly done beautifully. I never get scared by reading horror novels, but this had me looking over my shoulder in the night. Note to self: why did I read this at 2 AM. It's scary. Love that.
    • Emotionally engaging. The author doesn't make this novel a smooth road to victory, and I ended up quite literally bawling at 4 AM due to that. Other times I laughed because of the MC and ML's bantering and antics.
    • The romance between the leads is healthy and free of common cliches! The line is low folks, but we have a ML that would run to death's doors just to save MC and vice versa, while also having a cross-dressing ML! Like a cross-dressing ML! That's hilarious. ML especially is a 3 dimensional character. The side characters, though not fully focused on, do have enough development so you don't feel like they are the CP's lackeys.
    • Just pleasurable to read. Which is why you see me giving it 4 stars despite it having faults. It's not a perfect novel. I don't really get why everyone is rating it 5 stars. But it's pleasurable to read nonetheless. It kind of feels like picking up a gem in the rough when reading this novel. Definitely not polished, but has enough potential in the story that it can get you hooked in anyway. But even if I enjoyed it, I have to give the novel an objective rating. This novel didn't feel like a waste of my time, but I do feel for the amount of time I put it could've been done better. So here you go folks. That's my two cents.

This is my first time writing a review and I won't make it too long, BUT:

I felt like I absolutely had to write a review here because this novel was just too damn good!!!!!

I know there's a bunch of people saying that the end was anticlimactic but literally just ignore them and READ THE STORY PLEASEEEE!!! It's so worth it.

Not only was the ending great (in my general opinion) but the entire story was very enjoyable. A lot of horror bl novels I've read before don't tend to focus on... more>> the horror aspect NEARLY as much as the author for this one did. I'm usually not scared when reading horror, but I'm pretty sure I've gotten nightmares from this one. A+ for scariness thats for sure. If it was just gore and horror though, I probably wouldn't have been able to stomach it. The author sprinkled in some romance and comedy here and there, making it a much more enjoyable read, without diverting the attention from the plot! The pairing is also perfect. Not once was I annoyed or irritated with how the coupling was going.

Besides that though, it felt rather realistic, in the way that I was so deeply invested in not just the main characters, but also the people around them. There were moments where I got super anxious while reading, and had to pause for a bit and come back haha!

Not sure if this is really a spoiler but I'll hide it anyways:
Spoiler

The ending is not the perfect ending where everyone lives, but I think it is a happy ending in that Lin Qiushi is satisfied with his life.

I genuinely have zero complaints for this novel, only applause! <<less

Woahhh, where do I even start ♡ ~ ('▽^人)

Such a masterpiece. I love both the MC and ML, which isn't common for me when reading bl. Also! The relationship isn't the main focus here. Don't get me wrong- it's really important, but it progresses as the plot unfolds and has really nice pacing. And their interactions are hilarious- love them sm. However, there are moments when the doors make them despaired and their conversations turn solemn. What I loved here the most is their unbreakable trust in each other.

Moving... more>> on to the plot, the door's main motives are PEERLESS. I love how the author included some stories, myths, and games that actually exist. And the plot twists were so unexpected lmao. Oh, btw don't become attached to the characters too fast as they can be dead a few chapters later vgjhbknj

Overall, the story is written in a comedic undertone, but as the characters can die at every moment and some of the stories are really creepy (AND THE FACT THAT SOME OF THEM ACTUALLY EXIST DOESN'T HELP), so reading this at night, several rooms made me ACTUALLY scared.

I also wanted to say that the translator is doing a great job and I have no idea, how can they manage to keep up with such regular posting.

In conclusion- read it!

Also, please bear in mind that I didn't finish the novel yet, so I can't say anything on the topic of the rooms final conclusion and some other stuff yet (づ ̄ ³ ̄) づ <<less

With my current survival game obsession I have become absolutely hooked on this novel. It's worth every single second of immersion. With quality translations, the door stages are engaging and unique. I'm excited at every turn and the downtime dialogue between characters are just as fun to read.

Most importantly for me is the relationship between the MC and ML. The romance itself is slow, but the interactions between the both of them are worth every second of build up because of the sheer heart-gripping amount of faith and loyalty between... more>> the both of them. I have never been so moved by reading about trust like I have since picking up this novel.

The way the author depicts their relationship makes me almost envious. Trust me, you anticipate the moment they get together and when they do... it's so sweet.

But it's the other aspects of the story that really make this a 5 star rating. The side characters were fleshed out and felt like living, breathing people with aspirations and fears. Certain side-characters made my nose sour and my heart ache. The most pervasive theme throughout this novel would probably be sacrifice and the tragedy of losing someone. And boy, could you feel that overwhelming helplessness running through your veins...

My eyes stung and my throat closed up and I grieved. Truly grieved for some of these people I had come to adore... and others that I have only known through one single arc. (No seriously, I'm crying so hard!)

But it's also about overcoming fears, of how time doesn't stop even if you're scared...

Beneath the scary arcs, the comedic relief like sunshine after weeks of rain, and the somber tallying of those who are gone... lies the incredible high of adrenaline at watching the ML and MC pass through doors and dodging the brush of death.

KoD is the epitome of a well written survival horror romance. I'm going to re-read it again. <<less

This was just spectacular, definitely would recommend reading this.

This story made wheeze in laughter and made me grieve so much. But I really don't regret reading it.

I really hope a translator properly picks this back up since there's not much progress and permanent translator from the looks of it. I truly like the story so far, and I'm curious to see more.

The worlds behind the doors feel a bit like quick transmigration instances, but without the whole transmigration issue. Each story is interesting and the horror, while not truly scary, is still intriguing and keeps you wondering how things will turn out.

Both the MC and ML are well fleshed out and have their own quirks. The... more>> MC and ML share surprisingly deep feelings from almost the start, and they're both caring in their own ways. The side characters don't have enough focus yet to form clear opinions on them, but they all have distinct personalities and backgrounds.

All in all the story shows a lot of promise and I'd love to read more, but unfortunately aside from some MTL level translations that go further, there isn't much available to read online. The original translator did a good job, even if at a very slow pace. <<less

It is really a great novel.

Spoiler

However, I found that there are too many tragedies in the story eventhough it is still considered a happy ending story. I feel depress for a while, still, the story is too good to stop reading in the middle and I fight to the end. Overall is very good.

I just finished it and it was truly a good novel, liked the plot, the MCs, the side charas, liked the doors, their interactions, etc. Just was a little confused with the plot twist at the end and some other little things:

Spoiler

First, if Qiushi was in his 12 door then everyone in that world was false? What about the twins and Wu Qi? What about the "seniors" that Nanzhu and Qiushi met in the school? Also was kind annoyed about how come they don't have one medical staff in the whole mansion?! Not a doc not even a nurse??? LOL Also if they know they'll probably need medical attention isn't it better to stay in the living room with at least one more person waiting for them??? The timeline of events was pretty confusing also in the novel sometimes they mention that the person that goes in the door will just stand still for a couple of minutes to those outside the door, but when they're together in the same place the other just disappear (when not entering together), so which one is it??? In the end isn't this world all one big illusion, I mean even the twins weren't mentioned in the Qiushi's real timeline so why would them be going into doors at all? Idk, it's just annoying and I know that it doesn't matter but still :X Also what about the hints? How do you know that it's for your door or not? How do you know for sure that the hint is for somebody else's door? lol Also just thought that the "Senior" that Nanzhu was talking about was always Qiushi, yeah anyways...

[collapse]

Well, this a truly good book to read, the author doesn't overexplaing things. ABSOLUTELY LOVED that the story in the doors where concise and not overexploited just to pass the 100th chap mark. The MC's interaction were really funny and cute, just wish we got more of them in the doors after they got together but I understand that we couldn't since the censure is heavy in c-novel. Anyways, won't say this is a must read, but when you read you'll absolutely like it. <<less

Absolutely loved this novel. The romance, character development and plot progression were all perfect. This isn't a novel that requires too many brain cells to read either, and even if you skim through some arcs, you'll still be able to understand what's going on. The horror elements can get a little graphic, but they aren't drawn out, and the humor in this novel definitely balances out the more gruesome aspects. I laughed so much with ML's antics and MC's reactions, and their combined shamelessness made for the most entertaining scenes... more>> of them playing off each other and spreading obscene amounts of dog food while other characters watched in disgust. Ruan Nanzhu is an actual gremlin, and seeing Lin Qiushi become more and more shameless as the novel progressed gave me so much joy.

The cross dressing plot line was actually hilarious and I looked forwards to the contrast in ML's personality every time. He's probably one of my favorite MLs of all time, not taking himself too seriously while in drag while also being so competent and serious in real life. The contrast really added so much depth to his character, keeping him humorous and relatable despite his seemingly perfect appearance. You basically get two for one with this man, with the cold and calculating man as well as the dramatic and flirtatious (wo) man. He really is just too endearing, and I especially enjoyed his personality in the extras, where he's finally allowed to be whatever and whoever he wants and love Lin Qiushi freely without fear of an end.

My only hang up with this novel is that the ending and first few extras gave me intense whiplash and introduced so many plot holes that my brain could not keep up. Honestly had to read some other reviews to make sure I actually understood what was going on because the conclusion was so ludicrous that I couldn't comprehend what was happening at all. It was an interesting twist, but also completely ridiculous. Don't know how I feel about it really? If I think too much about the overarching plot introduced from the extras my brain starts spiraling into the endless number of holes, so I am choosing to separate the main story and the extras for my own sanity. There's quite a few plot holes in this novel, but my enjoyment overall was consistent despite them.

Adding that I cried a few times in this novel. It really was such a beautiful journey. The main couple gives you that feeling that they are truly made for one another, and they really do love the each other unconditionally. As someone who needs a good romance plot line in a novel, this story definitely delivered. I have so many favorite quotes and character interactions, and I really just could not get enough of the main couple.

Major spoiler below, but something that confused me:
Spoiler

In the twins extra, if LQS was the true leader of Obsidian before his 12th door, was reality overwritten after he left the doors? Because now we have the twins meeting RNZ as the Obsidian leader, which I thought was just what LQS experienced in the 12th door and not actually reality. Yeah. I don't know. The plot twist just really annoys me haha!

[collapse]

I'll say the plot twist in the extras didn't give me the feeling I usually get with big reveals like that of "wow it all makes sense now that's amazing" but rather "wow why is this part of the plot now" haha. Just a weird way to end the novel, as it kind of made the rest of the novel feel like a waste of time. I'm honestly a bit upset because I really really liked the rest of the novel, but I'll get over it eventually. Still a solid five stars for me despite the ending. <<less

Unbelievable! It has become one of my favorite!

actually I've been holding off this book for almost a year, I was reluctant to read it first. But oh! How regretful I will be if I didn't read this book!

it has a good plot, good adventure in every door, some people think the gore is too much but I think it's perfect. Not too little and not too much, just enough for you to feel anticipation what's going to happen next.

the romance is also good, it was slow but really worth the... more>> wait!!

But if one thing I have regret about this book is: I REGRET READING THE EXTRA!

If you finished the book, I recommend that you carefully think about whether to read the extra1 or not. Because that one extra really CHANGE YOUR WHOLE PERSPECTIVE about the book. You will see the book in a whole new light.

that was what I feel after I finished reading extra 1.

the change wasn't a bad thing though, it's just that I read it too fast. I haven't swallow the book yet when I finished. I was still processing it. I was sooooo overwhelmed with the new information in the extra. So even though I already had my suspicion midway, I still have a hard time accepting it.

Spoiler

when LQS asked RNZ about someone who has passed the 12th door, I had my suspicion about the door and RNZ connection. And when they went into the 9th door, meeting the sibling pair, my suspicion grew stronger that RNZ is not human! Then I started to suspect more and more as the story progress. But I didn't expect that RNZ was the 12th door itself! It was a huge blow to me. I knew RNZ was somehow not human but being confirmed like that was shocking.

[collapse]

I wish I waited for a bit.
but still I love this book. And I can see my future self read it again and again <<less

Technically completed! I skimmed before the [Minotaur] arc because I thought that was a pretty good place to stop for a Happy Ending

. In any case, I consider this a great read! Highly recommended, though you should prepare yourself for some tragedy and confusion.

CHARACTERS: 4.5/5

The characters here are pretty great! The main CP are charming and a select number of side characters were pretty interesting as well (though, because of the nature of the story's survival settings, you need to be careful about which characters you end... more>> up liking!)

Lin Qiushi (MC) :

The MC of the story is the straight-man type. I don't just mean his sexuality by saying that DJKSKSPS but his character. He's very forthright! He's got a kind heart in him, but he's not an idiot. He's very dependable, and he catches the ML's interest because of his ability to adapt rapidly to pretty dire circumstances.
  • Minor Spoilers:
    Spoiler

At the start of the story, he is transported into the world of "The Doors" and is forced to have to learn how to survive through the challenges ahead. Luckily for him, he ends up finding someone (the ML) to rely on.

    [collapse]
Ruan Nanzhu (ML) :

The ML loves to act LOL, so much of his personality and character setting is actually a bit of a spoiler. The basic thing I can say about him is that he's beautiful, and very talented. Oh, and he's particularly interested in the MC!
  • Minor/Major Spoilers:
    Spoiler

To be frank, the ML is particularly fond of cross dressing (and he's very good at it!) He's the Gong, yes, but he's also undeniably beautiful in a skirt
. Despite first appearances, he's actually very experienced!

    [collapse]
ROMANCE: 4.5/5

Although this is definitely more Shounen Ai than Yaoi, and the focus isn't on the romance, it's undeniable that the banter and slow burn in this novel is top-notch! The ML freely shows off his interest from the beginning

and it makes for some great scenes~ The MC is just too oblivious to figure it out lol.

SETTING: 4.75/5

I think the setting is great but that there are gaps or points were the author doesn't explain things clearly enough to make it make sense??? Anyway, here are the basics of the basics

The Doors:

There are twelve doors in total. When opened, the people that were s**ked in have to accomplish a task. This task usually leads to the "key" and the "exit door". And only when a person manages to leave will they survive.

Minor Spoilers:

Spoiler
  • Everyone that enters the world is someone in line for death. By clearing a door, they get to extend their life by a given amount of time. However, that time is limited. Once time is up, they have to enter a door again.
  • The risk for death is VERY high, as the instances are practically unclear-able after the 6th door.
  • When an exit door is opened, a clue for the next door will be given, this increases the chance of survival. But only the person that opened the door gets the clue.
[collapse]

What's most important to know is that there are MANY rules. And it's not really important that you know them. It will make some things easier to understand. But just know that most things that happen will have an explanation. It's just that the explanation will most likely come later.

PLOT: 4/5

The main plot is of course getting through the doors! But, thematically, I feel like the story is more about life and death? This novel explores the lives of a variety of different characters with their own motivations for living. The instances in the doors also tend to have this "life has a deeper meaning" kind of theme. There's also the romance subplot and the mystery of the different instances.

RATING: 4.5/5

I found the first part of this novel really really confusing. There were so many people praising it but I was struggling to see what was so good about it (at first glance, I thought it was a bit fun, but not worth the huge amount of praise I saw). I was proven quickly as the story went on, which serves me right! I think this story will be much more fun the second read through, because then I'll be privy to all the secrets. For your first read through, my recommendation is just accept that you'll be confused LOL but that everything will have an explanation by the end~ I really love this story because of the cast, but also because the instances were pretty interesting!

RANDOM THOUGHTS:

  • Personal Enjoyment: (5/5) Although scary at times, the author sprinkles a lot of soft and funny moments, making the reading experience pretty nice.
  • Horror Level: (?/5) Each door has their own charms. Some I found scary/creepy, some I didn't think much of at all. I can at least say that, with the variety, you'll probably find something spooky enough to merit a sleepless night

  • Angst Level: (4/5) OOF, is it a spoiler if I say that the main CP gets their Happy Ending?? I don't think so. But it's probably a spoiler to say that there's a reason I specify that the main CP gets a happy ending and not that there's a happy ending in general
  • Heat Level: (1/5) It's not smutty at all. There's heavy petting involved, but censorship is strong in this one.
  • Gore Level: (4/5) What's not censored is the gore LOL.

LONG REVIEW INCOMING!

Alright so, first of all I have to say, I started this novel with VERY HIGH expectations. I'd just finished reading TEIO (which I LOVE LOVE LOOOVED) and the reason I chose this novel to read next was because it was recommended under GUEE (MY FAVOURITE, MY LIFELINE) and TEIO.

Next, this novel isn't bad. BUT, it's nowhere near good. I don't like the MC nor the ML, and neither do I like their dynamic.

... more>> Here's why I don't like the MC.

The MC doesn't ask questions nor does he gather information about his situation. He is

Spoiler

knowledge-carried

[collapse]

by the ML through the doors.

Why? Why make the MC dependant on the ML like this?

Also. MC just

Spoiler

TRUSTS the ML JUST LIKE THAT. FROM THE BEGINNING, THAT TOO!

[collapse]

WHA-HOW?!

The novel leaves no stone unturned in showing us how DEADLY and SERIOUS their situation is. And in such a situation, MC just

Spoiler

trusts the ML?! ESPECIALLY WHEN HE SEES EVERYONE AROUND HIM GETTING BETRAYED BY THE PEOPLE THEY TRUSTED. MC DOESN'T EVEN STOP TO THINK ONCE THAT THE ML COULD BETRAY HIM TOO?

[collapse]

ARE YOU DUMB, SIR?

My next reason.

MC is a TERRIBLE FRIEND.

Spoiler

MC's best friend, who did so much for him, is not given the same treatment by the MC AT ALL.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Yes, when he su*cides, MC receives a huge shock. And of course, it was in no way the MC's fault that his best friend decided to take his own life because his girlfriend died.

[collapse]

But before that, it was mentioned how the best friend took care of the MC SO MANY TIMES.

Spoiler

He stopped by when the MC used to skip his meals. He checked up on the MC because the MC lived alone. He even forced the MC to go to the doctor because he was cooped up in his apartment with a high fever. Even when the MC was busy going in and out of the doors, it was always the best friend who took the initiative and found the time to check up on the MC.

[collapse]

And what does the MC do?

Spoiler

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. When the MC ended up in the hospital (MULTIPLE TIMES) after exiting the doors, did he tell his best friend he was alright? No. He kept him in the dark till the very end. THE BEST FRIEND DIDN'T EVEN KNOW THE MC HAD LIVER CANCER!

[collapse]

Sorry, no. An MC who's unable to return favours and keeps on being ungrateful to someone who cares ALOT for him? Not happening.

Now on to why I don't like the ML.

Ah this guy. First of all, I'm all in for shameless MLs who just love annoying the cold, stoic MC just to get a reaction out of them. But that only applies when the trope is enemies to lovers.

WTF IS THIS.

FIRST OF ALL, THE ML

Spoiler

is a crossdresser (which he's VERY good at, like a straight up professional god damn)

[collapse]

, but some things he does makes the MC very uncomfortable. Hell, it made ME uncomfortable READING it, as a viewer. But he keeps doing them and the MC just TOLERATES it?!

Also. He is SO SECRETIVE.

I GET THE APPEAL OF MYSTERIOUS CHARACTERS. BUT THIS IS NOT IT. DUDE LITERALLY TURNS

Spoiler

BIPOLAR.

[collapse]

The ML inside the doors is

Spoiler

COMPLETELY DIFFERENT

[collapse]

to the ML outside the doors.

Spoiler

After reading the extras, I know why it is so. But come on 😭 What is that explanation? He's a being from within the doors so he feels comfortable inside them rather than outside in reality? What is this 😭

[collapse]

Also, sometimes he just ups and leaves the MC. No explanation just, poof. Gone. Like, hello? Um? What?

ALSO, OH GOD. I HATE HATE HATE THIS TROPE SO MUCH. ML WAS

Spoiler

"RESISTING" his feelings for the MC. He kept them to himself, DESPITE being in love with the MC, because IF something were to happen to him, the MC would be heartbroken.

[collapse]

You know what that shows me? ML does not consider the MC as someone of his equal standing.

Spoiler

If he did, he would have confessed and them TEAMED UP. Except, we got that whack of a confession scene, that basically made me SUFFOCATE, AFTER TWO CHARACTERS DIED.

THE MC IS DEPENDANT ON THE ML THROUGHOUT 80% OF THE ENTIRE NOVEL.

Spoiler

ML IS LITERALLY BABYING THE MC. For comparison, I read TEIO and GUEE right before this. IMAGINE. The MCs and MLs there are THE elite power couples.

[collapse]

I read KOD expecting something similar. But instead I ended up with this. Disappointment would be an understatement.

Another reason why I dislike this novel to such an extent, is because of it's female characters. Why are they represented like that?

Spoiler

They're either a bit*h or pathetically helpless.

[collapse]

Out of all the female side characters I read about in the novel, the only one I liked was Tan Zaozao.

Spoiler

RIP MY QUEEN 😭 THAT WAS SO CRUEL.

[collapse]

NOW THE ENDING.

WHAT. WHAT? WHAT?!

AND NOW THE EXTRAS.

WTF IS GOING ON. EXCUSE ME WHAT.

Spoiler

Such a lousy explanation for why the ML acted the way he did, and his past and all 💀 He's a being from within the doors. Are you kidding me rn? Seriously?

[collapse]

IT'S NOT A PLOT TWIST! Plot twists are when the "twist" that happens, actually AFFECTS the plot. THIS AIN'T IT BRO 💀💀

FOR REFERENCE, THE PLOT TWIST IN TEIO.

Spoiler

THE MCs WERE NOT ACTUALLY ON EARTH, AND ONLY RETURNED ON THE LAST LEVEL.

[collapse]

ARE YOU KIDDING ME, MY MIND WENT BOOM BOOM BOOM 💥💥💥

But the so-called "plot twist" in KOD is just so lifeless. Saying I did not see it coming would be an understatement. I did not even WANT such an explanation. I can't say if I'm disappointed or just so shocked that I have nothing so say.

I honestly don't know how I survived the first 60 chapters. The only reason I stayed, would be how the arcs tell stories of actual urban legends. My favourite arcs were most definitely

Spoiler

Satchan and Slenderman

[collapse]

Oof the second one ESPECIALLY. GAVE ME CHILLS, and I love me some good horror.

Basically, for me this novel is a 3.5/5 for the plot. But 1.5/5 for the characters. (The MC has a cat so a 0.5 addition is absolutely necessary.)

All in all, if you want OP power couples, this ain't your novel. But it could be, if you're into this couple dynamic. The plot is alright, and reading the arcs separately is pretty entertaining. But the story as a whole left a bad taste in my mouth. I regret the expectations I had before starting this. Maybe it wouldn't have been this bad if I hadn't expected anything. <<less

Amazing plot and great chemistry between MC and ML!! This MC is my favorite MC out of all the bl novels I have read!
A slow burn, but a very satisfying slow burn!

Every arc in the novel is interesting and really good!

Plot:: About MC entering through doors; there are 12 doors. In each door there is a mystery scenario. You have to slove what is going on, find the key, find the door and get out. If you die in a door, you die in real life. MC... more>> joins ML's organization and starts completing his 12 doors with ML.

Ok. I think the ending was so freaken confusing as heck!! I had to read all the viewers's explanations to finally understand the ending!

I didn't really like the ending honestly, it's a happy ending though. However, I am tragically emotionally blanked out about that twisty ending. It's just a bit too much.
Spoiler

Ok. Can someone explain to me about the extra chapter on the flower...?

I still don't get why the doors were created.

So here's something that's really confusing::: So MC got passed the 12th door and picked the key to his orginal real world so he can be together with the ML.... But we all know that in his "orginal real world" ML never existed. That's why when he came back, nobody knew who he was talking about when he asked about ML.... So meaning, if they picked the other key, instead of the illusion key, they get to return to their original real world...

...... With that in mind, then since ML found the keys and picked the key to return to his real world, shouldn't that mean he should've returned to his real world of being the NPC and not to MC's real world. Because in MC's real world, ML shouldn't have existed. But how come when ML got the key, he returned back to ML and everyone "sort of" still remembered him.......... They shouldn't have remembered him since that was MC's real world where ML shouldn't exist......

.... So does that mean that ML is probably living in his fake world; and his fake world is actually MC's real world...?

... Also I thought MC was the only one who got to door 12th. However in the extra chapter about the twins. It was also said the older brother twin decided to stay in the illusion world, so that ment he also got to door 12...? But I thought 12th door got sealed after ML got out..?

Also, I didn't get what the older twin brother did that made ML yelled at him and disagreed with him on it.

[collapse]

Ending was a good twist but also very confusing and left a few loop holes.

OVERAll, nice novel! 5/5 for me.

Good job translators. Thank you!!🥰 Well be looking forward to more novels from this author! <<less

... the end was pretty interesting. What a twist. I'm not sure it's everyone's cup of tea, but I feel like the rest of the novel is worth it anyways.

The challenges were detailed and interesting.

I like the how the characters have personality. I feel like some things weren't answered, but overall everything was good.

also, I'm not crying. I'm definitely not crying.

Edit: As of now (Dec. 30th, 2021), I've finished this novel and many of the faults I've pointed out in the review have been resolved the further you read. I still will not be including a lengthy review about the ending or extra since many reviews have already covered them both in depth. I'll instead sum it up in one sentence: "That was unnecessary 🤨."

Review: Let me start this off by saying that I've been reading it on and off. I tackled around 30 chapters, took a month... more>> long break, then picked this back up and continued to binge read it up until the point I'm at when currently writing this review. (Chapter 121) This means this review will not be taking into account the ending, which I find many to have a problem with, nor the extras. I wouldn't binge read a novel if I wasn't hooked, I was definitely hooked and still an.

I'm heavily invested in KoD, but sometimes I question the point of some of the events that happened. This is mainly how the MC has handled death and the MC himself.

This first one I'm going to go on somewhat of a tangent with isn't exactly how the MC handled it, but how the author handled it:

Spoiler

The first leader of the organization of White Deer's death was honestly quite a let down. It was offscreen and not much was further elaborated about what exactly happened to him other than the fact that he was backstabbed. Usually, this would be a viable excuse, but this guy was shown to be a rather cautious and level headed guy, on top of that he was betrayed be a character who was only mentioned once or twice throughout the whole novel. The relationship between this character and the leader was never elaborated, making his death all the more mysterious and confusing. How could someone who is somewhat comparable to Nanzhu's intellect and instincts in the door world be betrayed with no further explanation?

[collapse]

The next one:

Spoiler

Wu Qi and his girlfriend's death.

I found it unnecessary mainly because the MC did not gain anything new out of this experience. No character development or some sort of epiphany reached. It felt like a filler plot rather than an actual arc since if were to remove this event, the story would be the same without it. We didn't even know Wu Qi had a girlfriend up until that point. There was absolutely no reaction from MC other than the fact that he felt dizzy upon seeing his dead BEST FRIEND followed by being calm and enacting revenge. I was really hoping that we'd see MC express emotions of sadness or something, but it was only a short-lived grieving period.

[collapse]

The last one I'd like to talk about:

Spoiler

Ms. Tan's death (the movie star, I'm so mad at myself that I forgot her name given that she was my favourite character)

It is not the reason of death I'm unsatisfied about, but the way it was used. I felt that the MC and ML didn't have that much chemistry, so the author just used her death as a catalyst to get the two together.

[collapse]

I only really questioned these deaths after thinking about them when the arcs ended. Since these deaths didn't make or break the plot, it didn't make me dislike the novel any less. Though, these deaths still left a lot of questions with answers to be desired for me at least.

I've knocked off 1* because I found there were many other plotholes and that the MC was rather bland. The way he accepts everything and I mean EVERYTHING so easily feels somewhat inhumane to me, especially towards the beginning of the book and with how some of the people that died were closely involved with him.

The other 4*s were earned due to well-built side characters, comedy, and easy to follow rules in doors. Not to mention that it is horror which I am an absolute fanatic for <<less

This novel makes me jealous as a writer. I can't figure out how to review this in a way that does it justice, so I'm just going to say you should read this and then try to make some rambling points about why:

  • I'm not a horror fan in general but this was super well-balanced, there was enough suspense and comedy and mystery interspersed to keep it from being too much. The vibe was more supremely creepy than anything else most of the time and I really liked it (FYI there IS a fair amount of gore, in case that's a dealbreaker)
  • The relationship felt realistically paced - it didn't happen right off the bat and it didn't come out of nowhere at the end, these two spend time developing feelings first and when they get together it's like "YASS B*TCH FINALLY". Also LQS is an idiot, but we'll forgive him
  • This novel gives us a ML who crossdresses and never apologizes for it, uses it to his advantage, and doesn't let the people around him turn it into a punchline. Our MC never stood a chance. Your fave could never
  • The whole concept with the doors is just really, really cool
  • I did read the review that was like "the 11th door was lame" before I started reading the novel. Having finished it, I am here to politely disagree. I thought it was the scariest one. It made me feel tense in my soul and I mean that in the best way possible
  • There is a wild plot twist in the extras. I kind of wish I'd taken a little break after the final chapter and THEN moved onto the extras so I could have processed them separately
Anyway, I'm gonna be afraid of opening doors for a little bit, debating about whether or not to buy Hako Onna, and probably rereading this very soon.

I'm... Having so much feelings for this novel. Everything is mixed and twirling around my head and my heart. I don't know if I should laugh or cry. Because Gosh, this is the Most Intense Horror Survival Game Novel I have ever read so far! In Top 3!!! ... more>>
Spoiler

and the Death Count is so much more than other novel I have ever read!!! Too much from what I expected and my heart break so many times!!!!..... But then........ Anyway even till the end it still left me Emotional.

[collapse]

The Author did Absolutely Outstanding Job! The Whole thing in this Novel is Totally Far from my Expectations!

This Novel Most difference from other Survival Game I have ever read was in each Door/arcs they're in, their Appearance is Totally Different from their Original/Reality. So no one could tell who is whom, even can't tell their own friends who go with them unless you know their Clothes, knowing their names (which can be faked), have Code or know their Temperament that maybe wasn't so different from their usual personality outside the Door. Also there's away to know the Theme of each other they're going to be in, but not very easy. Anyway, it's Very Intense Survival Game! Anyway, for novel with less than 150 chapters, it has so many Arcs/Doors but the story is Consistent with its story flows, progress, plot and all. No slow nor Rush.

Then, Let's talk about other thing.

The Romance is Slow, but consistent. The Straight Uke tag does not lie, but don't be afraid, our Protagonist is Very Calm Simple person. MC took ML's personality very well. (You will get what I mean if you pass the 1st arc). BUT even with the Slow Romance, since the First arc there's SO. MUCH. CUDDLING!!! It's Platonic Sleeping Together while Cuddling, but in every arc where MC and ML in bed together, they Cuddles! ML initiated it, but MC very Comfortable with it!!! ML cling to MC and acting, MC is Totally Fine With It and Playing along with him! This kind of Novel with this kind of MC is Very Rare because MC is Absolutely Comfortable with the Intimacy ML initiates, but also because mostly he's Oblivious. Not by the Intimacy, but by ML's attraction/feeling towards him. ML doesn't cross the line too with this Platonic intimacy between them.

Also, the Summary lies. The most Shameless person is Definitely ML!!! MC barely act Shameless at all!!!... Unless when Spreading Dog Food or when Acting. ML is the Most Playful and Shameless character especially when he's around MC.

Anyway, read at your risk. But I'm still going to say I RECOMMEND THIS NOVEL SO MUCH BECAUSE IT'S WORTH IT!!! The Author doesn't leave a single Plot Hole except the Mystery of the Door itself. And I'm Absolutely Loving it!!! Just Read it!!! <<less

... I think this is a story I will never forget.

I've questioned life, death, choice, and relationships. I questioned if the life I want to live is better than the one I already have. What is the meaning to any of this? Why choose to act a certain way if it won’t do you any good in the future. Why be mean to the ones who can potentially save you later on? Why focus on details that won’t mean anything in the next second? Why let your emotions take over... more>> you when that’s the moment you definitely need to think it through?
I feel like I’ve wasted so much time worrying about my life, my future, my everything... and for what???? Honestly, after reading this, I’m really scared. Not because the book was scary (which it was), but because I really don’t understand myself and I’m worried that would be my downfall.

I hope that those who read this book in the future really grasp what it’s trying to say. Please pay attention guys.
