Imperial Uncle

Description

I’m an imperial uncle; his imperial majesty’s uncle.

Once, someone with nothing better to do took a comprehensive survey of the current dynasty, and summed up the imperial court’s three great cancers.

Wang Qin leads in corruption; the treasury is never full.

Yun Tang favours a few, forming cabals; leading to corruption in our politics.

Prince Huai plays with power, and serves as the head of a hundred poisons — thus causing instability to the throne.

When they talk about the most venomous of vipers, the wicked one who plays with power, the biggest cancer of them all, they’re talking about me: this insignificant prince, Prince Huai, Chengjun.

I can only say that I feel rather hapless in the face of these theories.

In truth, I have been ever dutiful, ever devoted, devoid of intention to monopolise power, and possess even less of a heart to covet the throne. In the entire imperial court, I dare say there is no loyal subject more loyal than I.

But, most tragically, in all the realm, the matter of me being a loyal subject is something that not many would believe.

This is such a poignant bittersweet story that is weirdly engrossing, slowly dragging you in as you hope for some happiness and contentment for the MC. It is just so sad, yet so entertaining and compelling. Furthermore, the translation is perfect, which makes this book more endearingly. I love the character of the MC, so flawed, human, relatable and as much as I have so many hopes and dreams for him, it seems that you are just waiting for a train wreck to happen.

Now, this book is a machete. A... more>> huge machete that sneaks up on you when you least expect it! It goes beyond melancholy and it is just utterly painful; nonetheless, it is a painful that makes you want to keep reading. Also there's just no 'regular' romance - disabuse yourself of that idea before you start reading, it will make your reading experience much better. That said, I'd still say that this is a book about love - what love is, where to get, and how to give it, how to receive it, and what to sacrifice to keep it going (love, in all its forms, ranging from romantic to kinship).
Spoiler

Okay, the narrator is so unreliable that I have no idea what to believe. That said, there can't be smoke without fire. As much as MC is naive, self-involved, and depressed, his paranoia just can't stem from nothing. He does love his family and he tries his best to do what he thinks they expect of him - whether that is actually what they want or not. So, as much as QZ is written out to be a bit pitiful (I did not expect that to happen to him), he and the rest of the family do not seem to give the MC any assurance and inadvertently contribute to his depression and paranoia. The MC, without knowing, seems to be subconsciously plagued about not being able to fill his fathers shoes. Though one thing that I wish was explained was why people still believed he had power (the MC thinks he doesn't) when his father died and gave up military power and the MC was a child. Therefore, as much as I would want to blame MC, I can't absolve his family. The MC loves his nephews more than his love interests tbh. His love interests and eventual ML give him the safety, security, stability, constancy, and belonging that he has always wanted and I think that guides his decision to stay with ML. So, if you want to read romance, this isn't the book - don't hold out any hopes at all. All in all, wouldn't it be nice if the MC and the MLs had a poly relationship though

Questions I still have: why did QZ speak in innuendos to MC's love interests? Why did QZ speak of having children to LT when he was asking him to go back? Did QZ know about the Yuns in the end or did he stay ignorant even as MC and ZB seem to have found out? Did MC and his mom deliberately make the MC crippled? Ah so much mystery that I wish was clearly tackled.

Spoiler

omg, the freaking extras! So so so sad! The ghost emperor is really pitiful though he shows the inconstancy of imperial politics and for me, serves to show that MC's worries are as old as imperial politics go. While it's sad that MC did not love ML alone and he loved the other guy as well, and it is sad for MC that he didn't get wholehearted maddening love, it's clear that MC did give him his whole sincerity since MC only ever wanted the comfort and constance that ML gives him.

[collapse]

10/10 recommend reading, especially since foxghost's translation is impeccable. It is also amazing that you don't know who the ML is and I have tried not to include that in my spoilers either so you can experience the torture too.

I agree with the translator's choice to leave the extras to the end <<less

Truly brilliant. Didn't catch a wink of sleep cause I just couldn't stop reading. Tbo I would have read alternate endings with great relish. I want there to be alternate endings. The extras really do a person in. I pitied everyone, it genuinely hurt so much. It was so humorous but damn did it pack a punch. Everything is tied up really tightly, and him being an unreliable narrator who withholds information from the readers and only gives them out later on makes it more addicting.

It's plot heavy so don't... more>> read it for the ships cause it's def gonna be frustrating if you go into it wanting a stannable couple. Depending on your constitution, you might cry in sadness and scream in frustration.

The ending itself, I do think a lot of people would be unhappy with it, what with the unresolved feelings, misunderstood perspectives, and the fact the end game is not the love that is like a leach or a tumor that is most beloved by the audience and creators alike, but it is incredibly fitting. <<less

This was good. It was really good. My rating is more of a 4.6 then a 5 star, but to round it up I put 5 stars. The number of things that I did not see coming made my mind blown. Imperial Uncle is truly a novel about court politics and what it is like to be in the imperial family – to always have your guard up, not trusting anyone.

My heart ached for our MC, so much so, that I was about to drop the novel at chapter 35... more>> because it was too painful. All that Prince Huai wanted was love and companionship from anyone and it took till the end to finally have it. I found it interesting how the novel actually showed what arranged marriages were like. Prince Huai did not love his wife and nor did she, and neither did his Imperial nephews. Often in novels we have the arranged couple come to love each other over time; this was refreshing to see otherwise.

It took me a while to figure out who the ML was as there were many good options. Liu Tongyi was too perfect, he’s the type of character that you’ll see as the second male lead in a novel or drama, in which he is the first love- the idealistic love. Yun Yu also fit the category of second male lead. He was the best friend, the one that was always around, the one that the MC overlooked. And finally, the emperor, it was never clearly stated what he felt towards Prince Huai, but it was heavily implied that it was beyond familial love. All three could have been the second lead and all three could have been the male lead. Which brings the question of whether MC was purely settling for the last one remaining, and whether there truly was an ML.

It was sad watching all of Prince Huai’s nephews grow up, from the innocent children to people who were incorporated in politics. Also, to make a Mo Dao Zu Shi reference, you know that meme saying the novel could have been named ‘The Story of Jin Ling’s Uncles’ as everyone was Jin Ling’s uncle... Well Imperial Uncle could have honestly been called ‘The Story of Prince Huai’s nephews’. The title ‘Imperial Uncle’ is truly fitting. Who knew that the word ‘Uncle’ could send so many chills down my spine- to the point in which I hate the form of address? <<less

I regret wasting my time on this. Depressing and confusing, especially the ending. No romance to speak of and the writing style felt really pretentious (probably a good translation, though). If you want to seek into deeper depression, give it a go...

Ok y'all wow. This was a f@cking journey. And honestly the end was wack.
Before I start let me tell you that this is the first review I've ever left here. And I've read amazing novels here. But this one really lingered on my soul and if you're checking comments before reading, let me say: read first, then look at the spoilers. Because I did that and you won't regret it.

But before you go, let me start out with: romance is there, it's vital to plot, but it's not very fluffy and it changes like it would in real life. I've never read a non-romance-focused novel in the really long time and I'm so obsessed with this.

It was pretty dark at times, and so funny I laughed out loud at occasions.

But this is such a lovely novel, and from the bottom of my heart I'd recommend reading it.

(You're going to love this so much)

again, if you're too worried, let me reassure and chat for a moment:

-pacing is amazing and I didn't feel bored at all (lol until those post credit scenes at least).

-it's amazing at the end to think back, and you can really see how nicely the author used foreshadowing and how well she outlined the novel. Overall, everything the author put is isn't too unnecessary.

-after reading some comments before reading, I entered with the mindset: the character may not always be right, which was definitely the rights choice, so I do really reccomend reading with that in mind.

-everything said, this is one to binge, so sit on back for a few hours, haha

~bye love

-don't fricdjrhioweur1cking read further if you haven't finished <3

(you're gonna love it so much

Spoiler

lol ok now that the newbs are gone (bish you'd best begone), let's just all scream in tandem. Ahfasjkahakljlkjdslkjflksdhfdjshgjklsd.

Yes, I too am pretty annoyed at the ending. However although our final ML was a tad bit disappointing it wasn't as bad as some of y'all were saying. I mean, I too wish I could put down 4 stars bc I stanned the emperor and MC, the pairing honestly would never have come to mind without all y'alls reviews. Sure there were some cute moments btween the two, however that was hardly any, and we never really saw him. (Lol the most impact he really had on my emotions was his death which actually fcuking crushed me, and later when we saw our fav nephew repeat the cycle with emperor's son, which was sad too bc like, happy ending or not, like aljklksja (but also which is super in*estual actually, bc emperor and fav neph were bros, right??))

Actually, I quite despised how the author ended Yun Yu. I'd be ok if they just said that he was the nephew, whatever, however the gall the author had to make YY reject MC bc of that, I'm so f!cking offended! He should have been the endign ml, let's be real.

However, the ultimate ml, Liu Tongyi wasn't toooo bad. I felt like it was pretty natural, though those emperorxchenjun vibes were really exacerbated towards the end. But I disagree with the comments that said it felt forced and s*upid. It didn't really come off that way too me. Lol, actually though I was hating all his scheming and Yun Yu's scheming at the end, I came to find the Tongyi/MC relationship cute. (Tho if ya ask me, I'll still insist author coulda figured out a different ending with Yun Yu.

As for those ending credits/extra scenes, I absolutely despised them. I usually do hate extra scenes bc they drag on, but I just hated this bc it was unnecessary.

To wrap this review up though, I absolutely loved this novel. Maybe it's because I usually read romance fluff, but this was so fvcking real and intense and gritty, and you can't always have what you want, so even if the end made me a lil annoyed, it was awesome.

(tho you cannot tell me Yun Yu should have reacted like that, like ajhdjkahfdjalkjfdkljlsdhjlkgsjd--ik he has been pissed at the imperial nephews since frever, but still idk that seemed so unrealistic)

Best read ever!!! Even haters have to admit that Author wrote the first person perspective really compellingly. You just have to feel what Imperial Uncle (Cheng Jun, Huai Wang, Jing Weiyi, Uncle, the guy has so many names and when the nephew princes call him Uncle, it's so sweet) as you read what's actually going in his mind. I love his entanglements with the other characters are written, and I would love to read more 😍

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm dropping this novel because it was so good that I couldn't help myself and raced to the reviews to find out spoilers, got my heart broken, and became too mentally fragile to keep reading.

Absolutely loved the narration, have yet to read a better first-person perspective in a web-novel before.

The Best ive read in years! Kept me crying and laughing for it was so relatable in the sense of the just down to eart protagonist, he is perfect in his inperfection.

I can honestly say that even if you hate angst (like myself) youll enjoy this story, it's so well written that even what was lost in translation (cultural references) was compensated by the sentiment.

I cried from chapter 1 and didnt stop till the very end, it was a rather taxing story emotionally wise, so don't just rush into it... more>> if not prepare but defenetly do read it if you apreciate original stories, good writing, exceptionall perspectives and a character with deap.

Heads up for what seemed to be insinuated in*est but not quite (but then again I was crying so much my brain broke so idk if they where even related), there are NO NSFW scenes! Which I don't know made me happy or sad as I didnt "see" the protagonist fall just "too deep"

There are things I still don't fully understand so I will definitly read this again when my eyes arent as bloated as they are now.

This is a HE (for the most part I think) so enjoy the angst and hope for the best 🤞 <<less

For those who are being doubtful in reading this novel, I highly suggest you read it. This novel is somewhat unique. I have read more popular novels than this but I can say this novel has it's own flavor. There are some points in the novel that I get confused but that is its beauty as there are a lot of twists and turns. I have kicked my blanket a lot of times while reading this as the revelations and scenes made me speechless. This is the only novel I... more>> have read that I actually shipped many characters for the MC. This is one of the reasons why I love this novel because it is unpredictable. It made me guess a lot. The only downfall of this novel is that it ends. I wanted to read more of it! <<less

This is unlike any other palace politics I have ever read. For me, this is the most real depiction of what being in Royal family in past must be like. There are no villains in the story. Only politics and circumstances that pit you against each other. No matter if its your relatives, cousins, even your immediate family, circumstances and politics can make you a villain, someone that needs to be removed or killed, real quick. I find MC slightly naive and prone to attracting trouble and wrong kind of... more>> attention. He is also fickle and the person who he really loves is a mystery, at least to me, till the end. Even then I feel kinda sorry for the ML after reading the extras. Is it weird to say that I liked extras more than I liked the novel ? There is no typical romance in the novel, so one should not expect too much.

The writting is flawless but that is to be expected form the author.

One more thing that I liked was how the emperor is portrayed. He is quite young and we often see the character of emperor to either be a full fledged villain or atleast weak and giving in to the politics. Qizhe here, is very well written and one of my most favourite side characters of all time. He really did surprise me in the end and truly with the MC, I too dint beleive in him.

Thank you to the translator for translating it! <<less

The pacing is slow, but when something does happen, it happens quite quickly and dramatically. I feel the main character is quite unfortunate but stoic. I wish I could be as calm as he is though I'm not sure that he always benefits from this attribute.

I also disagree with the tags. I wouldn't consider this a comedy at all and not really a harem either.

I've just finished the novel and decided to put down my thoughts here while I'm still lost in the feelings. I decided to read this novel because I needed something short to read before exams. I didn't know anything about it, only read the synopsis. At start, I was a bit surprised by the first person POV since it's something I'm not used to, probably because I haven't read that much danmei yet. But it was so well written. I actually never thought that first person POV can be this... more>> good.

I honestly love the unreliable narrator of the story. Sometimes I was so taken aback by the plot twists. I didn't expect even one of them. The whole novel feels very melancholic, from the start to the end. I really like the whole vibe. I felt as if I'm the one going through that all, not the MC. It was very heavy on the feelings. As I read it fast, I'm still trying to process it. At some point I felt so heavy that I needed to go out for a walk for some time to process my thoughts to keep reading.

The plot is based on politics and I think it's a very authentic way to show what it's like to be a part of the royal family. The MC himself is so well written character. It's really easy to relate to him in situations. He's misunderstood so much. What was a new concept for me were the two possibly MLs. We can't say who will the MC end up with from the start which some people might not like but for me that's what made the novel so sweetly sad.

The ending felt a little fast for me but that's probably because I usually prefer much longer novels or maybe because I just wasn't able to put the book down and stop reading. I feel like this one is not known enough. It deserves more recognition. <<less

I really love this story. It is a complete world with complete characters. Even after I finished reading it, I'm still immersed in the complicated emotions this inspired me : the feelings of helplessness, betrayal, helpless anger, the feeling of being wronged, misunderstood, and inability to walk away from it all and resume a peaceful life despite that being the only thing you could wish for. All of these emotions I could clearly experience them along with the protagonist well, all that remains in the end of the story is... more>> a feeling of melancholy and some sweet taste after drinking a bitter soup. The MC isn't perfect, he is realistic, his flaws (even though nothing major), his bewildrement, you get drawn into the story and experience them all. This story focuses more on how everything builds up, on the turns outs, slowly it develops to an end. As other reviewers said it's such a short but long story. But it defenitely doesn't drag on. It was an enjoyable immersive read. Defenitely one of my few favorites. <<less

If you say this novel is WORTH READING, I would say NO. I only know the fact that this novel did NOT LET ME DROP IT.

The narration is sophisticatedly artistic with skillful translation. In contrast, there is a VERY FEW scenes related to romance and love. You cannot say MC is whether SHOU OR GONG certainly and whether PEOPLE surrounding MC that you regard them as POTENTIAL LOVE INTERESTS really like MC or not. So, I find it confusing. You will MISUNDERSTAND things and will place hope on MC's love... more>> confession for sure. TOGETHER WITH MC. That's why the tag 'UNRELIABLE NARRATOR' couldn't suit this novel more.

Also, it has MELANCHOLY AIR from the beginning to the end that very likely make you CRY at least once.

Regarding the PLOT, there are lots of TWISTS AND TURNS. Moreover, might be due to the novel's sets surrounding imperial courts and aristocrats, they sure BEAT AROUND THE BUSHES while talking. It makes hard to understand and brings FRUSTRATION because of the OPPRESSIVE SURROUNDINGS that place your every movement on the tight leash. All etiquettes and formalities made me not want to live in that environment.

This novel made me RUMINATE about a problem unrelated to the plot. Surely, since this novel has HISTORIC BACKGROUND, as a woman, I felt uncomfortable whenever the narration puts women in low positions. I realized again that there was surely NO POSITION for WOMEN except for PROSTITUTION and HOUSE-WIFE/CONCUBINE during the ancient times in ASIA. <<less

I found this story yesterday & binged it in one sitting. I made this account just to write this review. I was almost done with it but accidentally refreshed and now I'm rewriting it again. Because this story is SO UNDERRATED, and I hope that more people can read this. I've read over 30 BL danmei and this is the only story that has kept me on my toes, anxiously pressing next on dreamwidth (LOL). And not because the story is action packed or fast paced. Because I honestly had... more>> no idea what would come next. And that uncertainty propelled me anxiously forward (thanks to the unreliable MC narrator).

This is the MOST REALISTIC bl I've ever read. It might be the most realistic story I've read, period. Partway through, I had no idea who the ML was. Just like in real life. There are no guarantees or certainties. Just like real life. And as someone who's chased romance ever since young, declared love many times, broken others' hearts, crushed my own, and struggled with depression and recently, loneliness, I've never related more to a protagonist than our very own MC.

The translation by foxghost is beautifully done and retains the "ancient prose" (kind of like western Shakespeare) well. The descriptions and speech can be long winded because that's the way they spoke at the time, but because it's so beautifully translated, it encompasses the tone of the time.

I've learned so much about myself, life and love through this story. Please do yourself a favor and read.

ALSO, AFTER CH 34, READ THE EXTRAS. WHEN YOURE DONE WITH THE EXTRAS, then continue forward. Do NOT read the extras at the end. You will be missing an important plot point. <<less

Imperial Uncle is a wonderfully written and brilliantly translated book. It's a beautifully expressed first-person narrative with a rather unreliable narrator. For the most part, Prince Huai reminded me of Bertie Wooster from P.G. Wodehouse's books. Despite repeatedly assuring his readers of his motivations and loyalties, he is rather hard to predict. His heart is a mess too, as it hops aboard several ships, hoping each will sail.

I particularly enjoyed guessing who Prince Huai would end up with. The twists and turns forced me to keep an open mind. Because... more>> of this, I was invested in all the characters - all brilliantly crafted. You can't help but feel an affinity for Liu Tongyi, enjoy the sharp wit of Yun Yu, and marvel at the cunning of Qizhe. Besides them, you'll also find yourself feeling an affinity for Qitan. In terms of characterization, writing, and plot, this is a 5/5.

However, I cannot in good conscience rate this 5 because of how the author chose to end the story. While it is a happy ending for Prince Huai and the main love interest who suits him best and loves him the most, it is not fleshed out. We don't get a glimpse of how their relationship comes to fruition. The author tries to give us a glimpse of the main love interest's feelings in the extras, but it doesn't feel satisfying.

Books like Imperial Uncle and characters like Prince Huai deserve a satisfying ending. And we, as readers, deserve to feel the warmth of post-reading fuzz. What we are left with instead is a gaping hole with more questions than answers.

I love unreliable protagonist narrator stories just because the whole reading process feels so much more real. When the MCs assumes somethings, we assume it along with them.

Prince Huai is a complex character whom you shouldn't judge based just on his narrations. Even though we follow along his thought process, the author ingeniously adds in elements of him that we didn't expact.

Though this does has its own fair of politics and power infighting, I wouldn't say it holds much of a portion to the story. I personally felt like I... more>> was really reading someone's diary instead of a novel with the first person pov.

I like that all the characters are not 2dimensional and that we aren't able to fully understand some of their motives even till the end, because that's what makes royal bloodfeuds complicated. Everyone is there for their own agendas with many twists and turns.

Romance wise, I thought it was pretty obvious who he'd end up with despite there being hinted to be multiple MLs.

4.5/5

(The Author has another novel now with Zhangping in it and I'm curious, but for now I'll rest my heart from palace drama.) <<less

How can a novel be so short and so long at the same time? The narration is unreliable, things come at you seemingly out of the blue, but if you read the nuances you realize the answers were there in front of you the entire time. Superb.
