I Thought It Was a Common Transmigration

As if it wasn’t enough to be hit on the head by my co-workers and boyfriend, I died at the hands of my gambling-addict older brother. Without even regretting my unfortunate death, I realized that I had possessed a supporting role in a romantic fantasy novel, which I just read yesterday. To be precise, a villainess destined to die at the hands of her husband. I know it’s cliché!

‘Possessed a villainess in a romantic fantasy novel! So this is what it feels like?’

I thought it was pretty good for the price of my unfair death. Until I realize that no matter what I do, I can’t deviate from the flow of the original. For the female lead Lizé, it’s a delightful cider series, but it’s nothing more of a bloody story for Edith, the villainess I possessed.

I am the protagonist in my life. If I’m going to die according to the original story, I should at least kiss my super handsome husband! In the original story, Edith is greatly despised by her husband, but who cares, I’m going to die anyway. However…

“You pretended not to be, but now you’re so hot to play with. Well, that’s good.”

“Yes…?”

“Satisfy me like Riegelhoff’s serpent. Well, who knows? I might be interested in that body of yours.”

…why is the original story starting to change now?

"Not Bad but Not Good. "

[This review contains spoiler so read at your own discretion]

It was your typical 'I reincarnated as a villain thus I need to change to avoid death!' It was pretty interesting at the start when MC was not letting them treat her like a doormat (specially Cliff) I like how she tries to stand for herself and not just cry when she gets misunderstood or get accused of something she didn't do.

But then we came to the this arc where it's just full of accusations towards... more>> our MC and ML was just a piece of sh*t that don't even try to understand her side and literally do nothing 💀
Spoiler

I understand it's mostly due to the original plot's control over the characters but it's still hard to read. Like for example when MC gets accused of staging her own poisoning. ML barged in and accuse her then sidesteps (maybe due to guilt) but in the end do nothing while MC writhe in pain.

[collapse]

I'll say it's angsty + slow burn (?) Cuz ML took so long to admit that MC was a decent person. Like in 50ish he still has prejudice against her cuz of her surname💀 and it even took more time for him to treat her well.

Also one of the reason it only gets 3 stars for me is because the ending wasn't satisfying. They should have just killed ogfl.
Spoiler

She tried to kill MC like 10 times and literally committed a mu*der! But guess what?

[collapse]
MC even gave her an advice to continue living Like wtf!? Girl, she's the same person who tried to kill you and made your life that was supposed to be a happy a living hell. You're supposed to be mad at her.

And also ogML should have face consequences for what he done but NO. He was still the duke's heir after all that s*upidity.
Spoiler

HE LITERALLY LEFT MC TO DIE JUST BECAUSE HE BELIEVED OGFL AND GOT CONVINCED MC WAS A TRAITOR THEN PROCEEDS TO BE MORE OF A tr*sh BY GETTING MC ARRESTED WHILE SHE WAS f*ckING INJURED

[collapse]
He was literally a psychopath and a bastard who thinks he's always in the right. Well I guess in that sense, they suited each other so perfectly. Anyway, all in all it was an okay read. I finished this in just a day cuz I was excited for mc's revenge
Spoiler

only to get disappointed

[collapse]

Ps. No offense but the translation was bad like REALLY bad. The translation was like straight up machine translated. I hope the translator considers getting an editor or something. <<less

The female lead is very wise. Even when the male lead is completely bewildered by the og fl, her actions made him look at only herself. She has her own aura to lure people in her side even when she can't defeat the og fl. I won't give any spoilers. But it has a satisfactory ending. Everything till the end is described by multiple povs and side stories. A new, unique and out of cliche story. The author has put a great effort writing this. It was a worth reading... more>> until the end. <<less

Its nothing super new, but it was enough to keep me pretty entertained after reading a million of these isekai'd into the villainess stories. The author does a good job writing the character of Edith as a strong but not OP character. She's fighting to survive each day while still trapped in the limits of the "character" and "plot" as well as the limits of what a woman could and could not do in that time setting.

Edith shows strength in her resilience and she faces so so many hardships. She... more>> bends occasionally, but she never broke. If you can't handle reading about the main character dealing with one bad situation after another that builds into a slow but sure strength and victory, this is not for you. Edith spends more than half this story facing ab*se and hate and has no one to rely on but herself.

I also really appreciate that the story gives a real reason for the ML to have been as nasty and rude as he is until he really falls for her, and I really love that he doesn't just fall for her over night. Its a really slow enemies to lovers, but we get to see how their journey along the way. The villain was a bit typical, but I didn't even care about her since I was more invested in the survival of our main character and how the ML would react to everything she did.

Really enjoyed it! <<less

I wish I had known about guavaread translations earlier.

I first read on moonlight translations and even subscribed to premium chapters because I was so invested in this novel, but all I got was MTL with rough edits.

I should have suspected why their translations have been better on patreon lately, but after I read the guavaread version, I found out that Moonlight copied Guavaread's (only changing the pronoun from I to She, since their translation uses third person point of view).

Regular readers wouldn't know because they only do this on pateron,... more>> and upload the MTL version on their website.

Don't you translators have a code of ethics? You should be ashamed to steal someone else's translations and sell them as premium chapters, RJR!!! Even before that, all you offered was MTL with tons of grammatical errors and mistranslations (especially in the idiom part). What's the point of calling yourself a translator when all you do is google-translating?

All in all, 5 stars goes to Guavanim (translator at guavaread) for doing an excellent job. The novel is all the better for being translated by a legit translator. <<less

Sigh. Ok, I'll start off by saying the novel is really well written and the translation by guavaread is really good. And the plot is interesting enough that I kept reading despite—

Ok, here's my complaints. Despite how much the characters suck— not writing wise just character personality wise— the main characters are so...! The MC is infuriatingly dumb sometimes. I would have dropped this novel like a hot potato if she didn't have good aspects to her. She's brave. That's definitely the best part of her. But her choices; the... more>> actions she takes, are just consistently s*upid. Her life experiences also make her sympathetic. And she's kind. Those are her good points. But my goodness...

There's a reason why this is tagged as "pe*verted protagonist." As someone who has had good initial feelings toward boys with good looks but then immediately found them repulsive after they've treated me rudely, her falling in love with the ML (FROM THE GET GO) despite how f*cking unkindly he treated her just because he's handsome is... It's gross. (There's godly/uncontrollable reasons for why the ML did so, but it doesn't change how the MC liked him despite his shitty behavior. Actually, I think the ML is also lacking personality— especially in the beginning— which makes it even more eye roll inducing to why she liked him. She even thinks he's "kind" later, despite him only being the ABSOLUTE MINIMUM decent toward her AFTER she slept with him.) But since this is an unfortunate aspect that definitely happens in real life all the time, I could only feel stuffed up about it. 🤢

There's like, three good characters I feel like I've got to mention. A real saving grace. 1. Renon, the duchess's cold faced assistant. 2. Anna, the MC's cold faced maid (lol) 3. The duchess, MC's mother-in-law is pretty cool.

The villains, are for the most part, negligible cookie-cutter rofan bad guys. Maybe that's the point though, since the original story the MC transmigrated into was supposed to be a cliche. Just wanted to sum up that there's no one else really notable outside the supposed main leads of the novel.

Again, the writing/translation is what saves this novel. I'm also SO CLOSE to finishing this, I might as well do so. I didn't realize this review would turn out so long... But I had to let off my exasperated feelings somewhere!! 😮‍💨

Edit: Wasn't sure if I should even bother coming back after finishing, but my growing dissatisfaction was enough that I wanted to vent. In short, the ending is pretentious.

Main story ends at chapter 134, the rest is like an epilogue/extras.

The main villain of the story doesn't even get proper retribution at first because MC is just so kind and forgiving. People who were hurt/killed because of the villain? Who cares! MC forgave them and the ones harmed were only servants anyway! Later, MC wins the hearts of her servants in her new castle by displaying more kindness blah blah blah. Again, questionable and inappropriate decision making. All of this toward the end just made reading about the MC tiring.

Basically, she's a "holy mother" but whatever.

The epilogue chapters labelled "Flashback" piqued my interest again. They cover the villain's story, which was surprisingly more interesting. But considering what an annoying white lotus (/sincere) MC became... Well, overall, it's a bit too little too late.

At least I'm done now, but I've knocked off another star.

I think if you like mindless (almost brain dead) fluff rofan you'd like this. MC's values... are just too irritating to me. I'm just not the type to be happy or forgive others who wrong me (or others) when it's neither my place to... or when they never feel guilty or contrite. It honestly drives me a little crazy that the villain killed someone at some point, caused harm numerous times, and it all ended up being swept under the rug because MC and the rest of the Duke's family just want to just forget it all. The injustice of it all is so freaking infuriating. There's a combination of the MC being a doormat and apparently gone so native, the lives of commoners have lost their value to her. But it's just ANOTHER s*upid choice the MC makes, because leaving AND HIDING the things the villain did left those around them vulnerable! What kind of self-righteous, pretentiousness is that?! But the narrative just frames it as MC just being forgiving and kind.

I'm surprised at how much I ended up ranting. I guess I'm more disgusted than I thought. I guess I'm annoyed at how much time I wasted reading all of the book too. Sigh. 😞 <<less

I don't like novels where MC is in torture p*rn. Even though she has gone through some character development, I still hate Ml. Yes, it is true that he was brainwashed, but I find excuses such as brainwashing boring and stale. Especially since Mc's survival depends on the flourishing of her as*hole husband. Of course a ML can start out cold and imperfect. But if he was just plain tr*sh to FL in the beginning and thought it was brainwashing etc. If excuses are given, that novel is over for... more>> me. Take the novel "How to get My Husband", ML in there was acceptable to me because she was just cold rather than outright jerk. His rudeness was not specific to Fl; he was cold and rude to everyone around him. Although he initially treated FL the same way he treated everyone else, he did not insult Fl. He realized his mistake early. These are my opinions. So in short it's not my cup of tea <<less

My new obsession for sure. I started reading not expecting much and now I can't wait for the days when translation updates come out. It's a very well written novel and the author certainly works with a lot of interesting details, I think I still have a long way to go, but I'm already expecting a lot of hate thrown at FL and a lot of difficulties too. So far, Edith has been a great character to get to know and the whole plot from one-sidedly hater to lovers is... more>> *chefs kiss*

I honestly had no expectations when I picked this novel up so I was very pleasantly surprised when the MC actually stood up for herself using simple logic and began to call out the bullsh*t of the people mistreating her, it may sound like the bare minimum but it is actually pretty rare for me to come across an MC who just doesn't roll over or wait around for the ML to come and defend her, so at the start I was pretty much hooked, I was rooting for her... more>> when she called out the ML's bias against her. (imagine my disappointment when the MC gradually starts losing this no nonsense attitude)

At the beginning I totally understood her, she really got the short end of the stick but she was making it work somehow all on her own, the only thing I didn't like in the beginning was how she fell for him way too easily, ik he kind of had a reason for antagonizing her but it still doesn't make sense why she'd fall for him when he's done nothing but the bare minimum, physical attraction is one thing but falling for him when he actively treats her badly is another thing. As things progress, she becomes more and more passive and forgiving to practically everyone and I really hated that, it's like all the logic and self-respect she had when she called the Ludwigs out in the beginning sort of evaporated over time.

Speaking of the ML Killian.... well it took me a long time to like him all I could think initially as he was getting close to the MC was that she deserved better, Killian is not worth the suffering imo, I feel like his biggest problem is that he's a pushover, which makes complete sense, and it's a valid character flaw, he's the second son so he's pretty much used as a sacrifice in the arranged marriage, even a house guest like Lize is treated better than him, whenever he stands up for himself or his wife, they lord the "oh we are family" card over his head to silence him and his inferiority complex and brainwashing leads him to see no problem with how terrible his family is, especially his brother (oh, I have a lot to say about that mf)

I'll excuse a lot of his bullsh*t because of the brainwashing and due to the fact that at least he admits his mistakes when he realizes them, but one thing that pissed me off is how hypocritical he was when he got jealous over the MC for having a fully platonic interaction with her sort of boss-coworker Renon (Who's my favorite character btw, I love an unproblematic king) Kilian gets jealous over something like this meanwhile he's got a less than proper one sided relationship with Lize, he drinks tea with her practically every day, takes her to get shoes when he really didn't have to and kisses her forehead multiple times, which I actually would have no problem with if he wasn't criticizing the MC for just looking in the direction of other men, it's ridiculous. And you can't really blame this completely on the brainwashing either.

Also hate how when he's falling for the MC all he has are constant comparisons in his head about Edith vs Lize, a few I can understand it's only human nature, but idk, him always putting Lize down in his head to lift the MC up was annoying, I just don't like the 'putting other women down in order to compliment a woman' thing, It's plain misogyny.

I just feel like Kilian is still too easy on his family even when he's got complete control over himself. I still don't understand why he hid the fact that the MC was being ab*sed by her family and maid, even as she was being accused of being an enemy. Which kinda reminds me of all the physical ab*se the MC faces in the novel... it's excessive and I feel like there isn't enough closure? or maybe I mean there isn't much done about all the ab*se she faces, she's rarely mad at the people whose prejudice is responsible for her suffering, and it's very quickly forgotten about.

Another reason why I think Killian is too much of a baggage, his family and Lize are the reason she suffers half to death many times, and I just think it's not worth it, she deserves much better. But I'm glad that Killian was at least able to stand up for her properly at the end realizing how much she's suffered because of the Ludwigs, he realizes that they are pretty terrible morally too and defends her against his brother and Lize, I really liked the moment where he said he'll kill Cliff if he tried to take the doctor first for Lize.

The main antagonist Lize or the OG author, was just fine, her powers were kinda confusing but whatever. One thing I have to say is that I really don't like how when she embraced her bad side at the end, when she stopped being passive and forgiving and started dressing more lavish and less modest etc, and it felt like those traits were being considered villainous (ik the real problem was her being evil, but you know how certain authors write evil women right?) especially when you directly compare how at the end the MC became more passive, forgiving and saint like, it kinda sends me the message that "good" women are a certain way, idk it's just what I felt.

I was very mad when the MC just forgave Lize despite everything she suffered through, but I actually did like how Lize just self-destructed at the end, it was pretty satisfying to see her live with the consequences to her actions instead of just dying and getting the easy way out.

The one I really have a bone to pick with is actually Clifford, he felt more like the antagonist to me personally than Lize did, every time he opened his mouth, I wished he would choke, every time the MC forgave him and was nice to him, I gagged. He's self-serving, unpleasant and aggressive, he's not just terrible to the MC but terrible in general, even to his brother, he knows about Killian's inferiority complex and how he's hurting because his feeling towards Lize, but he does nothing to connect with his brother not even having a single conversation about it, all for some girl, we know Cliff is just f*cking crazy even without the brainwashing, and he faces no consequences to his actions.

He literally leaves the MC to die because he didn't care enough to look for her, that sh*t is f*cking unforgivable, I was so mad when the MC just forgave him practically instantly, it was so annoying, if I was her, he would become my mortal enemy and I would literally do anything to have him dead.

All his apologies are so lukewarm considering how he acts like a possessed animal when someone not just wrongs him but is simply suspicious in his eyes, then he wants them dead, but when he's undoubtedly wrong he'll just sweep it all under the rug, I hate people like him who clearly act like the rules don't apply to them.

There are no redeeming qualities to him, he's a terrible lover to Lize too, he's so controlling and clearly only wants her when she's this pure little innocent angel, like bro was mad that she, a grown woman was gonna read erotica? God forbid women do anything a man hasn't approved of first.

And Cliff gets away with it all at the end he gets everything he could've wanted, even when his marriage with Lize is unsuccessful, he mopes about it for a bit then just gets a second wife and just lives with no real punishment, even the offering up of the title to the MC and ML kinda seemed like a cop-out to me, I agree with the MC when she thought he was just trying to run away from the problem he created.

For the background characters I don't have that much to say but I'll mention the ones that stood out to me anyways- The Duke is tr*sh, he's got the audacity to be mad about the MC talking about her divorce alimony, as if they didn't make it obvious that she's a hostage that would get tossed aside once she's no longer useful. They don't even eat with her, they ignore her at every opportunity, no wonder she is expecting a divorce, and even when he's proven wrong, he doesn't ever apologize meaningfully because something, something toxic ego, it's pathetic I wish she wasn't so forgiving, he doesn't deserve it.

The Duchess is a painfully underutilized character, ik she's meant to be a background character, but she had plenty of opportunities to defend the MC (like the other non-brainwashed extra characters) but did nothing. She's a pushover too, I wonder if this is where Killian gets it from (And Cliff is more egoistic like the Duke.)

Renon as I said is definitely my favorite, I like his blunt, straight forward personality, I would definitely pick him if I had the option, and I like that he doesn't have romantic feelings for the MC, she deserves platonic supporters, like Anna (unproblematic queen) who I'm glad ended up with Renon, they are both the sane ones, I'm happy for them.

While I did find the ending unsatisfying at least I didn't drop it, so it kept me engaged till the end, so I will say that it was entertaining, I had picked it up really casually after all with no intention of actually finishing it, but I did and that to in a matter of three days. <<less

It is as said by many, our typical concept of " I transmigrated as villain, so I'm gonna change to avoid death", but the storyline and characters were realistic.

There was no sudden change like FL became different because of transmigration and suddenly because of her changed behaviour her life and surroundings became flowery.... No, literally nothing like that. FL had to endure a lot, she had to repeatedly prove herself in every situation. She is smart and have got good sense of humor. It's hard nowadays to get smart but... more>> also weak at times and non irritating fL, I liked her very much. Till the end her character was not disturbed like suddenly she became s*upid after receiving ml's support.

Story plotline was good, it had one hell of drama, you will constantly curse the story but you will wanna read it further, it's quite captivating.

ML, I didn't like him half of story but can't help it cause he was supposed to be like that because of original novel, he later became very likeable. His character development is good, it felt real cause there was no sudden change but he gradually realised and supported our FL.

About ending, I'M very much satisfied, given how realistic the story is, ending like that was to be expected, it was nothing like the couple become some great leaders or famous wealthy aristocrats but they have peaceful future and lovely family. As for OgML poor man, he suffered quite a heartbreak but his ending is novel is sensible and I liked very much about that fact. <<less

The beginning got me hooked, although it did very much seem like a common transmigration story. After reaching getting towards the end, I just couldn't continue. The reason is that it continues to bother me how the FL would like the ML. There is very little basis for it. To be fair I don't like the ML, but he's not written to be likeable in the beginning. So how would the FL like him when she's actually the one being treated that way?

Spoiler

I understand the ML had little to no agency early on. I still don't like him, but perhaps we say he's a pass. It still absolutely makes no sense that the FL would love him. She even thinks later that if she hadn't met ML first she would've fallen for the butler. The ML who she met first was awful to her while the butler was always nice or neutral. For both characters it seemed like they liked each other because they were physically attracted to each other versus for their personalities. ML slept with FL early on for seemingly no reason when he was still disgusted by her due to plot.

[collapse]

Overall, it's not bad to pass the time, but it does feel a bit lacking. <<less

I was captivated as soon as I finished the first chapter. Although it wasn't among the best, it was still enjoyable to read! It contained some distinctive elements but was otherwise very similar to the typical transmigration trope. Despite being predictable and cliché, the novel piques your interest and makes you want to read more. The male lead was first unpleasant but afterward underwent a great development; he is unquestionably a major tsundere. The female lead is rather likable. They both have the same sense of humor, and I adore... more>> them both. 😭 Most korean readers expressed their dissatisfaction with the ending—particularly the ending for Rize, the og FL (plus cliff, the og ml), but I was pretty satisfied with the ending of the female lead and male lead. <<less

I originally liked the novel. The start is quite fresh (being a cliche villainess transmigration story) but at chapters keep coming and the relationship between the male lead and the female lead evolves I couldn't help to start disliking the FL. She's a pushovers, no angst can save her. She brushes off the inhumane, illogical and abusive behavior of many people, not just the ML. The solution: forgive everything let's start anew. No consequences at all.

Disclaimer: I read using guavaread's translations.

I really enjoyed the translations and the writing. I agree with one of the reviews saying that except for a couple of characters, the characters weren't that likeable, but the premise does cover for it.

The reason why I gave it 5 stars, is because it has good translations, and it satisfied what I wanted from it. I never really felt like the romance stopped while I was reading the story. It's like the term action-packed, but for romance. Romance-packed, if you will. There are a... more>> lot of novels out there where it's technically romance because two people like each other, novels where the romance is a sub-plot that acts to supplement the story, and novels where they have romance arcs and non-romance arcs, but this novel was pretty consistently romance throughout.

Not only that, but I liked the type of romance it was. There were moments where it was more risque than I w0uld have liked, but I like the depth of the emotions the MC and ML felt. There were misunderstandings, but they weren't frustrating like some of the other novels, and they don't last as long as them. <<less

Dare I say this novel consists of my favorite FL and ML...? Seriously, I've read many manhwa novels and this has to be one of the best (even better than 'How to get my husband on my side' controversial, I know).

First I'd like to say that Edith is seriously such a strong character throughout this whole novel. Not only does she have to suffer with no one on her side for a while, but she also has the same experience of not being cared for in her past life. Her... more>> going through all these challenges and still being able to pursue them until the end makes me love her so much more than any other FL. She may not be your typical 'badass' FL but that doesn't make her any less than the others.

Spoiler

The fact that she still had the idea that no one truly loved her and that Killian only felt pity for her makes me grieve so much and I'm so glad she was able to have her happy ending. Once she realized that people were on her side she truly gave them so much love and it makes me fall in awe at how many people she didn't realize were on her side since the beginning of the novel.

[collapse]

Killian is so heavily misunderstood and it isn't fully explained why he is how he is at the beginning until the side stories. He is such a gentleman. He truly loved FL and if you can't see that it's a problem you need to fix. He is so crazy about her, and he always makes sure she's okay. If you forgive Izek, you must forgive Killian.

Spoiler

In the side stories it is fully confirmed that Lizzy had complete control over ML in the beginning Once Edith started to charm ML, Lizzy started to lose control of Killian. I would say she started losing control when Killian found the bruises on FL (Around chapter 30). Must I also say, around the end of the novel when FL and her family are being accused of kidnapping Lizzy, he had no doubts about FL at all. She didn't say anything, not even a whisper about her not being involved but he immediately knew she would never do this, especially with her wicked family. He did everything to protect her in every way possible and it honestly makes me a bit sad to see people give it 1-2 stars because of how "horrible" he is.

[collapse]

I would say the only complaint I would have about this novel is the ending for the OGFL.

Spoiler

She ended up marrying OGML which disappointed me a lot. However, I will also say that it is confirmed later on that Cliff and her end up divorcing because he is sick of her showing her true self (hanging out with other men, bullying others, etc...) and she is sent away somewhere. This was a great thing to read about but it still astonished me how Cliff still loved her after all she did to Edith.

[collapse]

But overall, this novel has such a special place in my heart and will continue to do so. No one can prove to me that Killian is a "horrible ML" or that Edith is a "weak FL". They are such a strong couple together thick and thin. <<less

I’m really intrigued with the webtoon because I heard the novel was really great. But so far they’re making the ML into a complete and I’m getting tired with the two steps forward and two steps back with their relationship. Yes, I understand he should be skeptical but you already slept with the lady and yet you have the audacity to not believe the FL or have even an ounce of faith in here.

I discovered this novel through its manhwa adaptation, I couldn't wait to read the next chapter since it's still ongoing so I decided to read the novel. One of my favorite tropes is the from enemy to lovers trope hehe, and this novel has that. It was a rollercoaster read, I felt mixed emotions while reading it. At first ... more>>

I hated the ML on how he doted the OG FL and the bad things that he said to our FL. Like, he judged her based on the rumors the he heard from the society and her fam background instead of getting to know her, but I learned to like him because he eventually became kind to our FL.

Like if I were her I would pack my things and leave my husband and in-laws. I hate how easily she forgave the fam of the ML.

Overall I love the story and I enjoyed reading the novel. <<less

2 things I'm going to complain about.

1. The moonlight translation sucks. It was readable, but there are misplaced words or lack of words. Like that acupuncture dress, my ghad 🙄. And sometimes names are changed. Sometimes you will get lost who's talking to whom. Although understandable, to my standard its like reading mtl. I wish I read the guava translation rather than the moonlight. 2. Everyone has happy ending. Although there's special chapters. I want justice to my Edith. She suffered so much and there's no consequences!?

Overall it was a... more>> good read, aside from the 2, I listed I dont have any other complain cuz im still crying over edith's injustices 😭 <<less

I think if more people realised that this is NOT a face-slapping novel they’d stop assuming stuff and getting mad when it doesn’t happen.

A fun interesting and properly thought transmigration novel with a clear plot. The MC had been ab*sed all her life and has zero self-esteem and only relies on herself.

And then she transmigrates into a character with a very similar abusive background to herself and deadly circumstances. Not killing herself is her bottom line but that becomes very shaky by the end as the plot of the novel... more>> itself keeps trying to kill her.

So actually this novel is more about healing, gaining self-confidence and being brave enough to stand up for yourself and finally being brave enough to trust somebody else. <<less

Why you'll like it:

Spoiler

You WILL cry. This one has a big emotional wallop.

It is very well written, with an interesting take on the isekai experience. The FL does not have godlike powers of detail via plot knowledge; some things change and wind up surprising her. There's some mystery about how things work, and we figure it out alongside her, in a way that is fun and not frustrating.

The characters, especially the FL and the villain, are psychologically nuanced and complex. And it's just fun and dramatic, but in a not-t00-stressful way.

Has many scenes you'll want to read and re-read.

I enjoy being a dramatic little B, and this lets me without going overboard.

The world building is well done, and not in a 'let me write a 5 page essay on this world I designed' way.

Why many people hate it or, more typically, find it frustrating:

Spoiler

The entire concept and plot only really works and is made possible because the FL was horrifically ab*sed and neglected in her life before getting isekaied.

She spent the majority of her youth sick and suffering, then her adulthood being overlooked and taken advantage of. Because of this, she is thrilled at any attention her grumpy husband gives her, and perfectly content to be fully ignored.

Being treated like garbage is her normal, so their treating her like garbage doesn't phase her, and this is the magic formula for getting the chemistry to work.

Plus, bonus! she at least gets good food, a healthy-ish body, and nice, fancy things to enjoy while they keep her under house arrest and surveillance yet again. So she's just having a grand old time, since the hell scape she wound up in is marginally better than her regular life.

Any normal, well-adjusted, mentally healthy woman would protest 99.9% of the garbage treatment she is required to put up with, and she doesn't even seem phased because she doesn't realize this is not a normal or good way to treat people.

There's a lack of the 'you go girl' female-becoming-empowered triumph in favor of the FL finding the happy home life she wants. So, instead of demanding a divorce, torching her POS in-laws' family reputation to the ground, and running off with the hot private secretary guy while we all cheer.... she and her husband work through everything and wind up happy together. Which is lovely, but I wanted castles burned to the ground and groveling.

While she and her husband do work and have the natural chemistry of a pair well-written to match each other, he is sex-motivated and that's a bit of a yucky mouth feel. The main reason he likes her is her s*x appeal, because she's got a seductress bod and flashy looks, and his emotions tend to be physically-based. It takes him a long time to acknowledge the rest of her stellar qualities, like her personality and intelligence, and he just comes across like one of those guys whose main priority in a relationship, which outweighs the combined total of all the other characteristics of his partner, is s*x. Which, I get was needed to get him to like her before he actually liked her, and she is a willing and happy participant (a rarity in these stories) but c'mon, this was written for women, can't we get a better guy? This one has a bit of a blecky aftertaste.

He's also got a drop of a v*rginity obsession which is very unappealing: he's always had to compete with his older brother, Cliff, so he is thrilled to death to realize he gets to be many of his wife's 'firsts', from first gift to first bouquet to first outing, to more physical firsts and likes how innocent she is... while still having a killer bod and being DTF only him. Yuck.

Spoiler

Edith eventually finds out that she is 13th woman to isekai into this role.

The deaths of 12 other Ediths before her is conveniently brushed over and forgotten by the FL so she can have her happily ever after with her husband. This is the most frustrating thing to me. I get that the plot armor system prevented him from evolving his character.... but that doesn't mean he isn't the type to ab*se his wife (like, literally ab*se his wife), and then kill her when the inevitable happens and she decides "screw this family". If he had been even slightly polite to any of his 12 previous wives, she wouldn't have picked her the 'traitors' path (though is it really a betrayal when her in laws treated her that poorly?)

In short, the husband and the in laws are not good people, and while they suffer a little (the duke and duchess must endure a girl they raised as their own and love dearly turning into a hated, shrieking harpy while their eldest son and heir becomes her bit*h boy and gets tortured that way) it ends pretty quickly and they all get to go on to have happy, fulfilling lives that make me want to scream at them.

Extra twisted is that the previous Ediths, aside from the original, were healthy, normal women with basic self esteem, and that's what got them mu*dered, because they would stand up and protest against the abominably unfair treatment.

I feel very torn up about the OG Edith never getting justice or vindication, especially since she was made live her hellish lifer over, and over, and over, and over again until the villain got bored and began brining in the others. I like to imagine she at least got to switch places with the first replacement girl and live well, but that's just wishful thinking.

My lengthy ranting in the 'why you won't' section aside, this really is one of the best stories on here. <<less
