Jiang Shuyao transmigrated and became a vicious lady with a flamboyant appearance and gaudy clothes. She married the most charming young man in the capital by relying on a scheme.

The husband disliked her, mother-in-law loathed her, brother-in-law despised her, Jiang Shuyao wanted to cry without tears.

However, there is nothing in the world that cannot be solved by a hot and spicy meal. If there is, then add hot pot, iron plate barbecue, skewers, milk tea, grilled chicken wings, custard wrap, shrimp dumplings, fried chicken, hot and sour noodles, curry rice, hand cake, fish cake stew, mashed potatoes, preserved eggs, lean meat porridge, and shrimp porridge.

After a period of time:

Picky mother-in-law: Shuyao is indeed a filial child.

Sisters-in-law: Younger sister-in-law is really cute.

Stern eldest brother-in-law and second-brother-in-law: Hard work, sister-in-law.

……

Looking at the people who have been defeated because of food, Xie Xun hates the iron for not becoming steel. Jiang Shuyao’s mind is very cruel and bad, I will… definitely not eat it… so fragrant!

The Good things:

  1. oh the glorious food
  2. Slow building romance, but really. You wouldn't read this fic for romance or dog blood plot
  3. Character development of the characters and details. I like how there isn't an absolute evil just different POVs and people looking out for their interest
The Bad things:

  1. I get really hungry while reading this
  2. Why can't I just go out and buy these food?
  3. Don't read this on an empty stomach

If you are looking for a romance story with a little bit of food, this is not for you. But if you are looking for an intense food description with a bit of romance, this is good story.

The romance is slow. It only half-way through the story when the relationship starts to go somewhere.

However, the story is filled with shameless and hilarious foodie characters that would do anything in the name of food.

The beginning sort of remind me of Transmigrator Meets Reincarnator, but this story has no misunderstanding, no drama,... more>> no romantic rival (except for food). I mean, the "Foodie" part is right there in the title.

In general, it is a very good light story to read when eating instant noodles at home and can't go anywhere else to get nice food. Totally recommended. <<less

Highly recommend!

As many review have mentioned, this story is a lot like The Feast, but with more focus on the food. Despite that, there are a lot of good characters and character relationship moments. One of the best things about the novel, in my opinion, is that there aren't really any "bad characters", just characters with different values or struggles or prejudices that end up affecting how the view and react to the world. For example, the FL's second sister-in-law is initially presented as bad tempered, rude, and hateful.

Spoiler

However, we learn later that a lot of that stems from her unhappy circumstances. She's originally from a different kingdom, one which are viewed as "barbarian" and so she has faced a lot of criticism from both society and her mother-in-law and demand to conform to the more restrictive customs. However, even despite stifling herself and perfectly adapting, her mother-in-law still is unsatisfied and her husband also takes many concubines and has children with them. No one in the family shows any genuine concern or compassion, which has turned her defensive and resentful. Learning about her backstory was a real shock, especially since it spun out of her suddenly busting out with martial arts when she and the FL are attacked by bandits. And it was also heart warming to see her opening up to the FL and rediscovering the self she'd left behind in her attempts to please her mother-in-law and husband.

[collapse]

The story does a great job of showing the evolution of the characters and character relationship. I'm also giving it massive bonus points for the fact that none of the family members ever actually treated the FL badly. The worse they did was behave coldly to her, but they were always polite and didn't insult or ab*se her in any way. Given the fact that the original body had a terrible personality, reputation, and that she used really insulting means to force the ML to marry her, it's completely reasonable that they would be distant with her. Still, they were never cruel and for the most part came around quickly when it became apparent that the FL had changed.

I even love the family matriarch who clings to tradition and buts heads with the FL as a result. Primarily beacuse, unlike many of those archetypes, she isn't the least bit hypocritical. There's one moment where another elder noblewoman is encouraging her to use the rules to suppress her daughter-in-law and the matriarch retorts with "the rules in your mouth aren't to restrain yourself, but to control others?". Great insight into her character.

Most of all, I love the female relationships in this novel.

Spoiler

The character who would normally be the FL's love rival has NO interested in the ML at all. In fact, her first meeting with the FL involves the FL sharing food with her at a banquet and from that point on the would be love-rival is conquered by the FL to the point where she immediately dislikes the ML because she feels he's too cold to the FL.

Her sisters-in-law also go from hostility to competing with each other for her affection, to the point where the two sisters and the FL look like two concubines fighting for the husband's favor. There's a particularly hilarious scene where the sisters-in-law, the would-be female rival, and the FL are in a carriage together and the the three of them are all competing to show who the FL is the closest too.

Poor ML, his biggest rivals aren't men but his brother's wives.

[collapse]

If you're looking for a ton of face slapping and revenge, this isn't the novel for you. But if you're looking for food p*rn with funny moments, great relationships, good characters with real development, low drama, and a sweet romance then look no further, you've struck gold. <<less

What left me with the deepest impression was the second master branch' story. The second master is the biggest preposterous scum tbh. What hurt his wife the most, I think, because he covered his cruelty with gentleness and love. No wonder his wife turned into a bitter woman with thorns. I'm speechless. He literally took his wife from her root and brought her to the capital, only to let her pull out her unique personality (that got him fall in love with her in the first place) little by little in her desperate attempt to adapt. And then he innocently took concubine after concubine, offering a lame reason that she would always be his sweetheart.

I'm disgusted at reading the second master's inner thoughts: he thought his wife was okay with him taking concubines because she never said no - but he also thought he could always coax her not to get mad at him everytime he took a bedwarmer.)

I'm so happy the author didn't gloss over the severity of his actions. In my opinion, until the end of the story he's still somewhat be a selfish man. I mean, his way to repent was to leave the capital, his concubines, and concubines' children?? (If I'm not wrong *coughs MTL he got tons of children from his concubines, although what was clearly written was just that his wife snapped after he got a concubine pregnant. Will follow the properly translated one to get more clarity.

The food.

That's it, period. I'm not even into most of the foods they make in this like duck's blood vermicelli or pig trotters or whatever else, but I still got so hungry reading this.

Besides the food though, I love the characters. Even the side characters of the Xie family are all super fun to read about and they're just good people in general. I felt pity and I later learned to like characters that I didn't to begin with and I think the author does a great job of explaining... more>> why they are the way they are and redeeming them. For example:

Spoiler

the second sister-in-law who originally seems kind of rude and mean, but later her backstory is really well explained. She was always criticized and slowly she started to become bitter and the type who criticized others, but the MC helps her move past that through food and just kindness.

Even with her husband, who takes multiple concubines and really causes her a great load of pain, I still felt pity for him at the end. He was dumb and really just didn't understand what was so wrong about what he did until much later and I didn't agree or sympathize with him, but I did feel bad for him near the end.

[collapse]

Another review mentioned it's like the Feast, which I will agree but I think the characters in this are a lot more likable and thus this was a better read. The ML and the MC are much more sweet in this. I will admit that means there wasn't as much drama before the ML and MC got together or from third parties, but I enjoy simple romance and this was that. There aren't any concubines competing like the feast and no major backyard drama besides certain characters disliking MC at first only to put aside their prejudices later. There is never really a third part though

Spoiler

one girl tries when ML is traveling for work, but he straight up doesn't pay attention and even ignores her.

[collapse]

It's just a wholesome slice of life type of novel with a very comedic undertone. Not too much drama and calm which is a good read when you're in that mood. I highly recommend. <<less

As another reviewer mentioned, this is not so much a romance heavy story as it is a food blog. The descriptions of food are endless and non stop. So make sure you're not hungry when you read this novel.

Even though the romance was light, it was cute. The novel summary implies that the husband (ML) will be the last one who is won over by her food, but that is incorrect. He is actually the first. Or, the third, depending on if you count the two cute little buns that... more>> are MCs nephews. But yes, he actually has good feelings towards her soon after their marriage, and actually doesn't give her that much of a hard time. She of course, didn't really notice anything. She was too busy cooking. But their relationship develops steadily over the novel, mainly through food. Eventually he realises that MC is not the original body who forced him to marry him, and their relationship gets cemented then. Some of my favourite parts are when ML takes his delicious lunchbox to work and his colleagues, including the Crown Prince, mooch off his food. Everyone in this novel is a foodie.

The ending was... abrupt? Confusing? I MTLed most of the novel, and so I may be wrong.
Spoiler

I'm not too sure what happened to MC's second sister in law. The breakdown in her marriage was sad, and even though her husband wanted to make amends, I'm not sure if she ever gave him a chance, she just had enough already. In the end, I'm not sure, but her husband applies for a transfer to her hometown, and so she can live closer to them? But in the ending, it was only mentioned that she would be going? I'm not sure what happened to her husband and daughter. Also, I was completely shocked when MC revealed she was pregnant. Because up until then, the only thing they had done was innocently kiss, and sleep together on the same bed. No Snu snu. No hanky panky. But BAAM MC is suddenly pregnant. I'm not sure if I missed something because the s*x was just that vague and ambiguous. Something like, then where was a scene of spring in the bedroom and then fade to black. Boooo. Boring. This novel definitely has no smut. Only food p*rn.

Definitely lots of food p*rn. If you don't like reading about food, this is not the novel for you,

The FL is not overpowered, she's just a girl that loves to cook and eat. Luckily for her, her mother's family is rich, so she has resources to make her life better. The ML dislikes the original for good reason, being that she trapped him into marriage. However, he's a decent guy and stopped his sister from picking on FL.

The ML's workmates/friends are hilarious. The... more>> ML's lunchboxes made by his wife turned them into shameless foodies.

Spoiler

The story tells an important lesson about being yourself so that you can live happily. FL decides to be herself and just cook, making her life comfortable and in turn people liked her as she is although she's not the normal noble wife mold. 2nd sister-in-law surpassed her own nature, even giving up practicing martial arts because her husband and his mother expected her to behave like a typical noble wife. In turn, the mother-in-law is never pleased with her and the husband wonders where the girl he liked is even though he is the one who expected her to conform. He then keeps bringing home concubines. When 2nd sister-in-law finally had enough and decided to be herself, she was much happier. Dumbass husband remembers that he loves her when she reverts to her original personality but it's too little too late. You can only stomp on someone's heart so many times before enough is enough.

@08phamann - to answer your questions

Spoiler

The 2nd brother gave his wife a letter that declared she was free from their marriage, so that she can leave and return to her family home at any time. He had asked the Emperor for a transfer to a town far away from the Capital. While the town is in the same region as 2nd sister-in-law's family home, it's still quite a distance away and would take at least months of travel. He is bringing their daughter with him but will drop her off at 2nd sister-in-law's family home first before continuing to the town of his posting. Their last conversation sums the situation up brilliantly.

When he gives her the letter of divorce she says (loosely translated) :

Her: You know that even after you did all this, I won't thank you.

Him: I know.

Her: You know that I still resent you?

Him: I know.

As to the main couple, they did the deed in chapter 104. There's mention of clothes falling to the ground and the look of "spring" in the room.

Completed... in a sense. This novel is more like a food blogger's collected works than a story. I appreciate the MC's open and generous nature, and her wildness, but she has no awareness and at the beginning also has the emotional sense of a brick wall. It was pretty frustrating seeing as the ML slowly realized his feelings and changed his behavior, but the MC just ignored everything about him and cared only about her mother and the food. You would get tidbits about their relationship and when it gets... more>> more interesting, the next chapter is still just 9/10ths about a food recipe. Leaves much to be desired. If you like food though, you'll definitely appreciate this. <<less

This book really is more like a food diary, very little plot but it was mostly sweet times... mostly. Like the best summary for this would be: food, food, fatten up the nephews, food, new inventions, food, open up food shops, food, look at this cold marriage, food, the main leads fall in love, food, food, side character growth, food. It's really like 85% food description 😂

I feel like the book summary given is a bit misleading, maybe that was the idea the author had but in actuality, her husband... more>> has always tried her food and is very supportive of her. The MIL is basically the last person she has to convince, she even has the Royal family under her lull before the grandmother. It's a slow build, very little intimacy and I mean even kisses are barely done. But their interactions are sweet & fun, they do their best to have straight forward communication and they support each other very well.

So this fleshed out the side characters well, especially the 2nd sister in law. She could be the heroine of her own story to be honest. She was my favorite despite how she was initially. This novel gave many of its female characters their own autonomy outside their marriage and be strong women. The men were mostly funny little foodies. I think it was interesting how they showed love in the three branches.

Spoiler

The first branch had a tried and tested marriage where they were solely monogamous despite past attempts to put in a concubine. Xu-shi cared much about rules and looking like the perfect lady unaware that her husband had always been aware of her "mean" side. On their wedding night she had threatened to a "sleeping" hubby that she'd make his life hell if he tried bringing in other women. She's a good mom and learns to loosen up and improve her relationships with the other sister in laws.

The second marriage was sad. A wild martial arts practicing girl from a military family and a pampered gentle scholar falling in love but everything changed when they married and she had to change to fit with what was expected. He was careless with her feelings, brought in concubines and even raised women outside (he had to bring one in specifically because he knocked her up) and it hurt her every time yet he did nothing but say sweet things. As if that would make everything better instead of embittering her. Like this marriage was bad, like drink poison to harm others bad, even her relationship with her daughter was estranged. After she and MC became friends and she went back to her old self (with cooking thrown in). She's better in almost every aspect of her life. Only now does the hubby realize he was losing her and wanted to fix things but her hearts gone cold. They end up divorcing and it's ambiguously open on whether they'd reconcile. Though there's a minor character introduced that I thought would be better but nothing happened.

Our leads (the third branch) were sweet young lovers still figuring each other out. ML is initially wary but quick to accept her change, he eventually figured out she changed souls and was relieved. It really blossomed their feelings. That was different from other stories I've read where the reveal is after the feelings have been cemented. It just help ease their hesitation. They were big on learning from the other's relationship both the good & improving on the bad, MC could be a bit dense emotional. I think she was still more forward though.

This is a foodie blog, not a romance novel. The first 30 chapters, all the food description are fun to read...I'm expecting the rest of the chapters to be more about romance. But until chapter 60, this is still a foodie blog. Pretty much all the chapters are about her preparing food and people went out of their mind becsuse her food are so good. So, I just skipped to the end lol. The translator did a good job. Overall 3.5/5

I was not hoping this novel would be turning good.

The Male Lead at first is scumbag, he never shows a emotion on hisfaces, treats coldly the female lead, I really don't like him and never caring about him but it was very surprising how he change, it's a subtle change that will lead him falling in love with his wife. Their relationship became cute and fluffy.

I confess that I didn't expect the sly, sly translator to attack readers with food pictures this early (I was at chapter 2) and now I'm hungry (again).

Also, MC is very entertaining, her mindscape was both simple and hillarious and I'm very ready to rate this novel highly.

About the ML... I'm not sure since I'm a new reader but he defended MC when she did that tea-serving tradition. Strong tsundere vibe, too. I have faith that he's destined to kneel before delicious food and its maker's pomegranate skirt,... more>> hum~

This novel should really be renamed as 'how to grab hubby's heart, make everyone in the story fat and make readers salivate' 😂😂

First things first the translator for this story did an amazing job, they not only translated the story but even included pictures and videos about the food being made.

The story itself is incredibly food based most of the plot seems to move along because of the food being made. Most of the chapters are going to be about the food being made and how, so if you don't like those kinds of stories then this might not be for you.

This is the story of a girl transmigrating into a girl's... more>> body the same day she has to marry into the ML's household. She uses food as a way to cope with this new reality and makes friends along the way with her cooking skills. It's really not that deep. If you're looking for something deeper than that, then this is not for you.

The side characters shined in this story though, in fact, I cared more about the FL's in-laws and family members than I cared about her and the ML. I kind of wish we could have gotten to read more about the rest of the family and what happened to them when the story ended. <<less

This was an enjoyable read. Honestly the translator went above and beyond with showing us pictures of the foods being made and even videos, which has been a source of great enjoyment for me and has given me many recipes to try making in real life.

This is a slice of life story, so no crazy drama happening, just a tale of day to day life and how things and relationships change for the better due to the MC's food. It is a relaxing and likeable read, even if sometimes the... more>> focus gets put on the food a bit too much when you want to know what happens next in terms of the relationships instead.

It felt like the end was a bit rushed, but still a very relaxing read and all of the relationships got solved well in my opinion.

Read this for the food and to relax, don't expect any crazy drama or lots of plot. <<less

I personally like this one more than "The Feast", which up until some 100s chap was considered bullshit. Translating quality is also good.

If you love food and good development on romance I think this is a good one, the fact that the FL is a cannon fodder is also a plus. (Trying to revert fate -ish novel is great isn't it :D)

Spoiler

All those 'cousins' made the story 100x more entertaining. Also the FL mum is a nice change of pace sad that despite all her money she was still stuck with her husband. The love between FL and ML is super cute so be warned if your here looking for spicy moments they do not consummate the marriage until chapter 104 (1) out of 109 (2) chapters also no real description of the event pretty PG.

I enjoyed the love between the first wife and her husband he and his third brother view marriage/love in the same way you find out near the end of the story though obviously ML is way more lovey. The second brother... Despite his redemption arc of letting second wife go and moving up north so the daughter could split her time between them, he can not be redeemed. Her family told him no concubines, he gets them so she argues with him but eventually quietens down since she is alone with no maternal support in the capital. He has multiple shu children she turns her head but the straw that broke the camels back was getting a random women outside pregnant. He then has the balls to turn around and be shocked and later even when apologizing he only shares the blame saying she should have told him she was unhappy sooner, like dude she argued with you every time as you pointed out earlier. Utter hypocritical scumbag. Second sister is best side character though!

Wow, this story successfully made me hungry. Almost every chapters, MC introduced new dishes and how to made it. How about romance? Romance only a side dish in this story.

Love between MC and ML is slow burn. ML initially hated her so much because he was forced to marry her due to her scheme. MC, who was accidentally transmigrated and occupied the original's body, also didn't care much about ML and only thought that he was pleasing in the eyes.

Like in the description, they got along better and came to... more>> love each other thanks to her delicious foods. Not only ML, MC also managed to capture the hearts of people around her such as her family, ML's family, ML's friend, crown prince, and even the emperor himself.

Well, I thought this story was supposed to be a lighthearted story that will make me laugh without worry but suddenly the author gave a bittersweet ending to some of the characters in this story and made me cry.

Spoiler

It's about Zhou-shi and Xie Lang. I felt complicated about their separation. On one side, I thought their separation was the best for Zhou-shi. Xie Lang indeed hurted her badly and she deserved to be happy without him. But on another side, I also wished that they will go back together, maybe not now but someday. Xie Lang reflected on his mistakes and chose to be an official near Zhou-shi's hometown. It sounded romantic but what will happened with his concubines and childrens back at Beijing?
