Jiang Shuyao transmigrated and became a vicious lady with a flamboyant appearance and gaudy clothes. She married the most charming young man in the capital by relying on a scheme.

The husband disliked her, mother-in-law loathed her, brother-in-law despised her, Jiang Shuyao wanted to cry without tears.

However, there is nothing in the world that cannot be solved by a hot and spicy meal. If there is, then add hot pot, iron plate barbecue, skewers, milk tea, grilled chicken wings, custard wrap, shrimp dumplings, fried chicken, hot and sour noodles, curry rice, hand cake, fish cake stew, mashed potatoes, preserved eggs, lean meat porridge, and shrimp porridge.

After a period of time:

Picky mother-in-law: Shuyao is indeed a filial child.

Sisters-in-law: Younger sister-in-law is really cute.

Stern eldest brother-in-law and second-brother-in-law: Hard work, sister-in-law.

……

Looking at the people who have been defeated because of food, Xie Xun hates the iron for not becoming steel. Jiang Shuyao’s mind is very cruel and bad, I will… definitely not eat it… so fragrant!

The story is cute, but there's not enough substance for me to stay interested in it. I think all the characters were well developed, and I like the ML but there's not enough going on in the story to keep you invested. It kind of feels like the story kind of repeats itself in every chapter, where she cooks food and someone in the family eats it. I thought there would be a bit of palace drama around chapter 30 where she

visits the princess and then meets another character (forgot her name) and they talk about hamburgers, I thought maybe she would do stuff in the palace more

but she ends up opening a restaurant which I've seen too much of in foodie books like these. Shake up the formula! I prefer books with a bit more plot, but maybe if you like fluff and foodie books you'll enjoy this. Just don't expect a lot of plot happening outside your typical foodie book progression (MC makes food, cooks food for other people, opens a restaurant and becomes wealthy). <<less

Good food novel, heart warming and not many evil plots or schemes. This is actually more realistic for a court scene to a certain extent and I like it, the MC is a very independent woman and she only grows to like the male lead farther down the road. It’s a lovely story to read

Recommend for reading it when having a full stomach to still raise your appetite to eat later.

While the novel centers mostly around food details, it doesn't forget about ML/FL's relationship and other side characters as well.

Shortly, the novel is good to pass time while eating something to not be laughed at fictionally by the novel.

Four stars in total.

P.s. Bed scene with no details

Good night.

A really good food po*n novel. The romance is slow burn, but realistic. TL did a really good job describing the food, attaching pictures and videos which really helped, except at night when I start craving em lol.

It's mostly a fun and simple read, but there are emotional and deeper parts that are really well written, so kudos to both author and TL.

Do read this if you're looking for something light and touching with no unnecessary drama and villain's or whatnot.

This a heartwarming novel with no dog blood drama. The FL (Jiang Shuyao) got good personality and good cook... while ML (Xie Xun) was a big foodie and considered as one of the best male leads of Chinese novels. The development of their relationship was sweet and felt natural (not forced).

The author really good in describing each dishes that made me hungry lol.

One of the good points of this novel was also the side characters who got depth even some minor passer-bys warmed my heart. Their life experiences, changes and... more>> realizations made me teary and emotional... and some of them especially the East Palace guys made me laughed out loud.

I also liked that this book promoted women empowerment wherein women helped each other. <<less

Very sweet, I really enjoyed reading this novel! I love all of the characters, not just the MC. Each one felt very real, with their own personalities, flaws, and interests. The romance between the main couple was extremely cute but also the relationships, both romantic and platonic, between the side characters were so well done. Not only is this novel about food, the novel itself is like a wonderful home cooked meal with lots of tasty ingredients!

I love this novel. I came here from Little One Tears the Villain's Script and wanted something in the same lighthearted vein. I binge-read everything and would do it again.

First of all, this is straight up food p*rn. But I really like how they use the food as a sort of focal point to show how the characters are feeling around the time the food is being served.

For example, the Old Madam. This really hit me hard because I've read a lot of CN novels, so I know that in historical China women rely on the so-called rules to pave their future. I love how the author described her loneliness and used descriptions for the street food market to show this turning point in the Old Madam's life, and how she started changing her mindset.

Two other characters whose development I really liked were Zhou Ruoying and Xie Lang. The author portrayed how bittersweet their story was; the ambiguous ending just made it more realistic for me. It's not that Xie Lang wasn't wrong, and it's not that his regret wasn't real, but he caused too much hurt. It's not certain whether it could be something that could be forgiven and forgotten—just like in real life. It's all very grey, which I like.

If you want food p*rn with a side of slice-of-life and romance, this is for you. Just as refreshing as grass jelly after hotpot if you're tired of dog-blood drama. <<less

Loved it! All the characters have their flaws and their goodness, there isn't any useless scheming. I like how relatable and redeemable the characters are.

Of course, this is a novel about FOOD haha, so expect food to come first. But even though I thought it might be too focused on food for me, it turns out that the story behind it is written so well and so heartwarming that in the end, it wasn't just about the food anymore 😌

Many of these side characters could have had a book of... more>> their own and I would definitely read it, they are so vivid and memorable.

This novel is all about food. Good food. Mouthwatering good Chinese food. That's it. That's the novel.

With a side of really warm-hearted good characters. And lots of sweet and fluffy dog food from ML and FL.

Don't forget that touch of really inspiring life lessons.

If you're bored and wants some fluff and food, then have this masterpiece~

Highly recommended!

The novel is simple and straightforward, yet full of fluff, especially when our leads bond together over meals.

I love how despite being a tsundere and his bad firdt impression of her, it didnt take long for ML to overcome his prejudice, and afterwards realise he loved her. Most importantly, he didn't act like a jerk about it (unlike most cold MLs who have battles with their emotions for god knows why). He's also quite different from the rest, as he would genuinely try to make her happy, even if... more>> it didn't adhere to conventions. All in all, I definitely recommend and I will like to express my admirations to the translator for the quality in her work, despite not being a Mandarin speaker. <<less

The story is very good. Its easy to mtl. First of all, the ML is really cute he's shy hehehe.

Im not gonna say much about the MC and ml. But I can say things about the 2nd brother and 2nd sister in law. The 2nd sister in law is so pitiful. Her husband dumb, a scum, an insensitive b*tch. He kept on saying he loves a person but keeps on taking concubines and expecting his wife to just accept it. 2nd sister in law, I really feel her. She doesnt... more>> have anyone in that place, her mother in law doesnt like her much and sides with her son when he takes in concubines. When she was able to go home. This is heavily based on food. Sometimes I skipped the description because they go on a bit. If you love food novels this is one of the finest ones. It's really funny too and the people are likeable.

It's a bit like the feast but way funnier and with less drama and a less scummy ML.

My favourite thing about the story is that there aren't any villains, no annoying in-laws etc. The people are very genuine and the sisters-in-law really get along, so it's nice to see how they all love... more>> MC. Sometimes they even ignored ML and tried to show off how close they are to her :)

Women have a lot more rights as well so that was a nice change

***Spoiler***

Spoiler

I lost a bit of motivation to read it after the 2nd house broke up and the wife left to go back home. Like sure the hubby was a bit scummy and took in concubines but I didn't feel he was that bad.

I also felt like a lot of it was the wife's fault, she never really spoke up or just discussed her true feeling with him. I also felt like he really considered her feelings in the end and did things that he felt would make her happy instead of just keeping her in his house due to pride, reputation and whatever..., but I get that by then she had fallen out of love with him so... Yeah.

It's nice that she's a strong woman, but I think a lot could have been resolved if she didn't try too hard to fit the image she felt he wanted and they just communicated (isn't this every romance novel). Nevertheless, I really liked their story arc and I was hoping that they would resolve their differences.

[collapse]

Not sure if the author just got tired and gave up or if the ending just hasn't been MTL yet but it stopped at c.104 (no ending) so you have no idea what happened to any of the characters which annoys me. <<less

I like cooking, unrestrained protags, slice of life and solving conflicts with diplomacy. That's why I enjoyed this story a lot, especially since it becomes more and more of a challenge to find stories where the entire worlddoes NOT fall to chaos or where rivals are NOT a cartoonish bastards without a shred of human emotion or reasoning one could empathise with. Still, it has it's own problems. SerenaLove has left a few too many direct translation of idioms, as well as the times used in sentences are a bit... more>> iffy in a few places.

The biggest problem, however, is the dish descriptions and evaluations. Everything is fresh crispy and savoury, not fishy at all, oily but not greasy and with endless aftertaste. Having your own pet phrases and opinions on what is tastiest is not a good thing to have considering that around half of the wordcount in the whole novel is dedicated to cooking or eating. Sure, each of those dishes are described in a tasty way. Except they all seem tasty exactly the same, all the way up to about half the novel when both plot becomes more interesting and dishes start becoming more specific and different from the default Chinese ingredient hodgepodge seasoned with sloppy five-spice seasoning with extra garlic and hot oil. <<less

READ IT!!! So stinking cute! Romance is a bit awkward and slow burn but wholesome and without interference. I personally love foodie stories but it may be too much for some folks. Cooking scenes take up 75% of the novel😂🤤 My absolute fave is probably the ML’s fellow officials forming pretty much a fan group over the FL. They do the silliest things for their food goddess. Barely any heavy stuff like schemes, angst, rivals and etc. In fact, most haters get converted to besties. I highly recommend!

Summary: Jiang Shuyao wakes up to find herself in the body of a disgraceful woman in Ancient China. Lustful and illiterate, the original body has placed Jiang Shuyao in a predicament as her reputation and the original host's actions cause her new husband and his family to disdain her. Luckily, she's got a cheat! As a level 9000 Foodie, she's going to cook her way into everyone's hearts!

MC:

MC is pretty no-nonsense. She just wants to eat and drink and enjoy life. She's not bothered with gaining strength or defeating... more>> enemies. She's laidback and easygoing. She's also, thankfully, not the type of heroine who is oblivious to her own feelings.

ML:

This is a pretty good ML. He starts off like an iceberg and completely irritating, but the more we get to know him, the more we understand that there's a lot more to him. He deeply respects MC and actively advocates for her without taking away from her accomplishments or condescending towards her. He is someone who is fairly aware of his thoughts and emotions which makes him a very drama free ML. Together, there's very little drama in their relationship.

Plot:

Laidback. There is a theme about authenticity and the struggle of women to adhere to societal rules. This is perhaps the most explored theme and we see a lot of mirroring and various women whose lives are affected by this; from the seemingly generous but secretly petty Eldest Sister-in-law, the repressed but secretly wild hearted Second Sister-in-law, the frantic and exhausted Mother, the glamorous but lonely Imperial Concubine Aunt, and the seemingly model woman but empty inside Mother-in-law.

This is not a novel with a lot going on. While MC does accomplish quite a bit, the focus of the novel is on her cooking whatever she wants and her in-laws, husband, and even his coworkers, are overcome by the deliciousness of her food! Even the few times she does something of great importance that could lead to power or influence, it's not important in the story. On the other hand, the relationship between the leads was very very cute.

The BEST THING about this novel though is that it is HILARIOUS. It's so funny omg. I was CACKLING in my room at 3am.

BTW: Did this feel fruity to you?

4.5 stars: Typical transmigration foodie-romance historical novel where pretty much every chapter features a particular dish described in mouthwatering detail and frequent usage of the terms "fragrant" and "sweet/fatty/oily but not greasy" that everyone views dubiously, tastes, then devours while crying over how delicious it is, and the MC slowly charms her way into everyone's good graces via her cooking and upbeat modern attitude. The translation is pretty good too. If you want a light fun drama-free foodie novel with light romance, this is a good choice.

The character stuff ranges... more>> from "nice but unremarkable" to "surprisingly complex for the genre" though the latter is more for some of the side characters than the leads. The MC is totally unfazed by her transmigration into the body of a new wife who schemed to force her husband into marriage and finds herself living with a hubby who hates her, his brothers and their wives who also hate her, and his mother who, surprise surprise, also hates her. The MC realizes she's actually independently wealthy and her part of the house includes a little kitchen, so she can buy and cook whatever she wants, and is perfectly happy with that. Who she was before she transmigrated is, as far as I recall, never mentioned, so as usual "transmigration" is just a convenient plot device to enable her to cook all kinds of dishes.

To the author's credit, the in-laws are NOT a bunch of black-bellied scheming cruel bullies. They're either just cold or rude to the MC and generally avoid her or dismiss her, and to their own credit, the original soul had a bad reputation, a bad personality, and forced her way into their household and upon her unwilling now-husband, so they had plenty of reason to dislike her.

Even the ML isn't a particular jerk or anything to her, he just treats her coldly and avoids her. I realized it was pretty nice to read about in-laws that aren't villains or incredibly s*upid, especially in a historical setting.

As such, I didn't find it implausible or improbable that the MC manages to food her way into their good graces—for one thing, she's a totally different person living in close quarters with them so they eventually pick up that she's actually very different from what they thought, and her cooking is delicious and she's very free with her food and in general is a nice, friendly person, if somewhat eccentric and outright strange sometimes (based on their historical perception of her modern behavior).

And I mean, this is a cooking novel after all, it's to be expected that the MC uses her cookery to change everything from family relationships to the economics of the portside city in which she lives. She even shows filial piety toward the original body's mother and develops a good relationship with her, trying to take care of her mother as much as she's able to while belonging to a different household, and encouraging her mother to take up pursuits like restaurant management since she feels so stagnant in her life—which, between the MC's cooking skills and ideas, and her mother's wealth and business acumen, naturally turns out to be a string of hit successes.

As far as romance goes, the relationship between the MC and her husband was nice enough and sometimes pretty fun, as he often feels like he has to abandon his dignity in order to eat the strange but delectable foods his wife prepares (use his hands to pick things up, and suck things with his mouth? Heavens! But it's so delicious...) but he gradually gets used to things and starts to realize his wife is actually very unique, and he does start to feel things for her and gets annoyed (in the pouting/sullen way, not an a**hole or toxic way) when he realizes he seems more interested in her than she is in him.

He also has his own POV and at times when he's working at the palace or on business trips, he has to deal with his friends, colleagues, and even the prince following him around drooling over his food—and amusingly enough, he eventually learns how to lure and bribe them into good behavior and helping him out using his wife's cooking. Nothing serious or really manipulative though, it's all silly, like using his wife's specialty smoked bacon to prompt his coworkers into protecting him from woman who's trying to seduce him when hey, he has a wife already!

The more interesting characterizations involve some of the side characters, though for many of them it's quiet background changes or the story ends up falling a bit short by seeming like it was going to expand more and then not—the way the MC's mother-in-law and sister-in-law Xu-shi change over time was a little more nuanced than just "her food is so delicious and I guess she's not so bad after all", as the characters do actually come to other conclusions about their own behavior, social norms, and relationships with other people, as prompted by seeing how strange yet free the MC is. Again, most of this isn't majorly featured character stuff, but it was refreshing to read about characters that aren't just blindly worshipful of the MC's cookery.

The side character that gradually ended up with the majority of the B-plot was the MC's other sister-in-law, Zhou-shi. She ended up by far the most interesting and complex character in the story, and the way her storyline had almost equal prominence with the MC's cooking in the end made it seem like the author also was more interested in her. Zhou-shi could have been the protagonist of her own novel.

Spoiler

Detailed description and breakdown of of Zhou-shi's storyline is as follows: Zhou-shi's storyline is pretty interesting in that at first she's like all the other family members who dislikes the MC and refuses to associate with her, only to be gradually seduced by the MC's delicious food. She has a young daughter with whom she has a distant relationship, a husband whom she loves but seems to have some long-simmering one-sided-on-her-side background issues, and is known for her th**ny attitude. Later in the story, it's revealed that she came from a different province considered on the country-bumpkin side, and she has a background as a martial artist which she gave up when she fell in love with and married her husband because that's unseemly for the wife of an aristocrat.

Things take a turn when her husband one day brings home an attractive lower-class woman pregnant with his child and announces he's taking her as his concubine. Zhou-shi is pissed off by this while everyone else tries to placate her and her husband acts dismissively because, after all, for this time period, taking concubines is normal, and he figures his wife will get over it just like she's gotten over every other time he pissed her off.

Unlike past incidents though, she doesn't get over it. Instead, she remains cold to him and refuses his advances and attempts to kiss-and-make-up, instead channeling her restlessness and anger into learning how to cook from the MC, and along the way develops an awkward but loving relationship with her daughter. Zhou-shi also goes back to her martial artist roots and uses her blade skills and fighting techniques to perfectly chop vegetables and such. Along the way, she realizes how she has stifled herself all these years for the sake of her husband, who claims to love her but doesn't really seem to respect her or connect deeply with her anymore. She struggles with homesickness and the realization of how much she's missed her own family for all these years.

On his side, as the husband realizes Zhou-shi isn't going to easily forgive him for knocking up a random hot girl and bringing her into the household as his concubine, he starts trying to ingratiate himself to her and is shocked when she continues to rebuff him. He also sees her cooking more and starting to flourish, and remembers how he fell in love with that vivacious martial artist girl and was overjoyed to marry her, and realizes how dull and constricted she became by societal norms and family expectations once she moved away from her home to be with him.

However, he still retains the mindset of his social class and doesn't really see a problem with the whole preggo concubine thing—like, he got her pregnant so of course he has to take her in, and what's the matter with that as long as he still loves his wife, who is the main wife and her status remains the same? He pretty much says all this to her face, still hoping that she'll forgive him and they can resume their previous relationship.

But Zhou-shi is, for this genre, an actually very kick-a** woman beyond just being a kick-a** martial artist, because she tells her husband that despite everything she will remain his loyal wife—but she's basically done with him and is going to do whatever the f*** she wants, so he should just go ahead and do whatever he wants (as he's been doing all these years) and leave her alone. She tells him this very straightforwardly and then basically mic drops and walks off.

Her husband is left dumbfounded and realizing too late how badly he messed everything up, while at the same time unable to figure out where he went wrong. His resigned grappling with the repercussions of his behavior and the loss of his wife in everything but name is somewhat satisfying, though it doesn't reach crematorium-genre levels.

He does eventually figure things out enough to do good by her to the best of his ability: He takes a demotion in order to be transferred to the boonies of her old hometown after securing the agreement of their level-headed young daughter (who has become more interested in her mother's background and wants to expand her own horizons), so that their daughter can technically accompany him though she will stay with her mother's side of the family. He then gives his wife a letter of separation which she can accept or reject as she wishes—she can remain his wife and stay in the capitol or follow him, or she can leave him and go home, and either way she'll still have her daughter with her if she wants. He even tells her that they don't have to announce their separation if that will cause trouble for her, they can just keep it on the down-low.

Zhou-shi basically has the most solid character development and an actual character arc in the story. I'd totally read a novel with her as the protagonist.

[collapse]

The story ends a bit abruptly with a few loose ends if you don't count the extras—but even with the extras, it feels like a half-hearted continuation of the story that's sparse on detail, as if the author realized, "Oops, I left too many loose ends, I'll just wrap them up real quick, " but kind of didn't care anymore so didn't put any effort into the characters or creating actual scenes or even *gasp* the food. The final extra chapter literally ends with a banquet where none of the food is described!

Lackluster end notes:

Spoiler

The MC's mother's pregnancy was prominently featured in the story yet when the story ends, she's still heavily pregnant. In the extras, she basically gives birth so far off screen I had to reread a paragraph twice before I realized it had even happened, and there's no mention of the MC attending to her mother and newborn sibling and she has no scenes with them. Instead it's Zhou-shi who has a very tiny scene with them.

The MC is revealed to pregnant literally at the very end of the story and then BAM the end. Then in the extras, her pregnancy is sort of vaguely featured and then BAM she gives birth to twins and then BAM time skip of at least several if not more years, vague unclear references to her husband changing jobs and the family moving (?), and the MC holds that banquet where no food is described and she isn't even in the scene.

Zhou-shi features in the extras too, having returned to her hometown and reuniting with her family and showing off her cooking skills. Again, like with the latter part of the main story, she has more detailed scenes and character stuff than the other characters. It's ambiguous whether she's chosen to leave her husband, officially or unofficially, and I was actually okay with not knowing because she's clearly back in her element and happier with her family and daughter. There is a small scene of her daughter and husband together that was a nice end-note.

But overall, the extras were disappointing in how rushed they felt and how the literal main character was barely featured in them. If things hadn't ended this way, I would've ranked the story a full 5 stars instead of 4.5—as it is, it's a bit like feasting at a grand banquet that's supposed to end with a magnificent dessert, and then at the end of the banquet you get served a stale cookie still plastic-wrapped from a fast food joint because the chef got tired. The banquet was overall still great but the ending was a disappointment.

Still marking it as a 5-star though because I did overall enjoy it.

[collapse]

Despite the hurried lackluster ending, the rest of the novel was a good foodie novel without much drama or angst on the MC's part and what few complications there were, she and others manage to get around through creative use of food. <<less
