On the way to a company workshop, we fell into a world of immortal cultivators while still in the car.

Those with spiritual roots and unique abilities were all called to join cultivation sects, living prosperously.

But I, having neither spiritual roots nor special abilities, lived as an ordinary mortal for 50 years, complying with fate until my death.

That’s what I thought.

Until I regressed.

The story should be called A Regressor's Tale of Depression.
Spoiler

Don't get me wrong, I've highly enjoyed the story - up to a certain point. This novel becomes increasingly frustrating and depressing the more it goes on. I'm okay with that, but there is no f*cking break. It's a continuous cycle of sadness.

Every time the protagonist feels a iota of happiness in one of his dozens of depressing cycles, it's quickly taken away. Major character deaths happen in every cycle. You can't f*cking get attached to someone because in the next cycle the relationship dynamic changes.

So even though those characters are alive in the new time-line, they're not the same characters that you got to know the first time round.

While reading the breaking of relationships, Eun Hyun's last moments in each cycle, and his enlightenment before/after death is actually beautiful, it still leaves me with a lingering bitterness. And because we don't know when he'll get rid of his time loop ability, I can't find myself actually caring for each cycle he goes through, knowing that the relationships he forms will end up meaningless by the end of it.

The main idea behind this story is not cultivation, it's Eun Hyun's suffering. And there is no immediate payoff.

Also, I felt like it was too early for him to ascend to the upper realm. Makes no sense. He has yet to reach an appropriate cultivation realm, and now he's in a place where he can easily get snuffed by randoms.

And considering how many years/lifetimes it takes him to make a breakthrough, I can see this novel spanning thousands of chapters.

Spoiler

Oh, his ascension marks a checkpoint in his time loop ability, meaning that every time he dies, he re awakens in the upper realm, not in the lower one like in the previous iterations.

[collapse]

Also, there is no harem up to where I've left off, I don't know what the other reviewers have been reading so far.

Spoiler

His main love interest gets killed off in one of the time lines right before he confesses to her.

In the next cycle, after the MC manages to avenge her, he decides not to pursue a relationship with her because to him they're not the same person. Fair enough.

However the end of that particular scene is open ended with a clear hint that she might come back in one of his future cycles.
-

The other love interest is one of the mc's ex colleagues which has been hinted to be crushing on him in one of the earlier chapter. This has been confirmed when he got to the upper realm and spent some time with her.

Romance isn't a clear focus of the story. And I can pretty much see the protagonist never getting in a relationship again because of how painful it is to have that person not remember you in the next cycle.
[collapse]

Whether thats gonna change with future chapters, I don't know.

Overall it's not bad. A great start, but gets depressingly repetitive. Good translation. Fast translation. I'll keep an eye on this, but I'm unsure if I'll ever pick it up again.

Just read it. It is far and away the best regression novel I have ever read. It is also a phenomenal cultivation novel that I would argue is better than 99% of CN cultivation novels. The MC is great, the side characters are great, everything about it is great. The translation quality and speed are top notch as well. I think this only started getting translated back in either late October or November and it already has 133 chapters, and the chapters are not short or split into 2 like... more>> some other sites do. I dont want to explain anything else because it's way better to just read it and find out. Seriously, just go read it. <<less

To be honest the cultivation genre isn't my cup of tea. It's a formula that rarely appeals to me, yet the premise of this story sounded promising. If for no other reason that it doesn't start off with face slapping mu*der hobo's. That said the execution of this stumbles quickly.

Spoiler

Director Kim develops his own martial arts method with the express purpose of fighting cultivators and finding his own method for cultivation... MC learns it one loop and then passes it on to him in the next so that Kim has a jumpstart in the new timeline. Which he does of course, but then he stagnates for over a decade once he reaches the peak of martial arts. Not knowing what to do after he becomes the strongest martial artist in the world (not cultivator). Meanwhile MC never advises him that he should try fighting cultivators despite knowing that was the goal of this martial art. Instead the MC waits until the low level cultivators scheme to make them the enemy of the entire mortal world... and THEN he bothers to direct Kim to fight cultivators that he knows the location of thanks to the previous loop. Only to shockingly find out they've only been killing the weakest cultivators when stronger ones come out to fight them. Oh my god?! Really? In the beginning of this story there was a meta moment where some of the people that transmigrated clearly had read cultivation stories. Yet these people aren't genre saavy when it counts.

MC supposedly has focused on gathering intel and other non-martial art related skills since he has no talent. Yet blunders about and seems to want to brute force things instead of doing things efficiently. Who cares when you presumably infinite loops and time?

[collapse]

It's pretty well written for what is almost a diary/biography of the MC's loops. On one hand it does it's best not to rehash the details of past loops, but it can't avoid the redundancy completely. The sad thing is that he's been hanging out with his hyung for decades and we hardly know anything about him other than the fact that he's a genius at martial arts and is starting to develop that cultivator arrogance. In other words don't read this hoping for deep character development outside of literal power leveling. <<less

Simply perfect

This novel is at a level that can compete with the best quality books on the market (lotm, orv). Unlike these popular books, it does not appeal to every readership. The slow pace of the story is acceptable. If it weren't for this slowness, the story wouldn't be as good as it is. It makes every return meaningful and worth living because the world is not reset as in other regressor stories, it creates alternative timelines.

It's nice for MC to make sacrifices for others. Because he will come back.... more>> The sad part is that even though they are very close to those they care about, they may not be the same person.

To say the magic system is well thought out would be an understatement. You feel the effort put in. The cultivation path shows his struggle against fate, and the martial arts show his struggle against his talent. Even though it may not seem like it, the results of your efforts are truly rewarding. I can say that there is a lot of information flow in these two systems, but if the author had not said these, we would never have understood the powers of MC. This is freedom for the reader. It helps us understand and even think about MC's next actions.

World history is mysterious. The part that impressed me the most is the feeling of cosmic fear that the author left to the reader. The moments when he looks at the sky, when he reaches the end of the world, and even when he reads a children's book, he feels the horror. (Those who read to the end understand me) Learning new things about the heavenly cultivators is scary. A thousand years old monsters history... The difference between the powers of these monsters and ordinary people is like the difference between the heavens and the earth. The author doesn't need to tell you, because the more you read, the more you understand its terrifying powers.

I think this book definitely doesn't deserve bad reviews. The book is slow, has a lot of information and is thought-provoking. These are the features that make reading fun. Because it makes the reader curious about what will happen in the future. <<less

The thing I like about this novel is that it makes every regression turn meaningful. The world-building and the power system are more detailed and plausible than your typical cultivation novels. The plot is also solid. As for the characters, the MC is your standard Korean MC which should tell you much if you're familiar with Korean Webnovels, and the other characters are also good and consistent even if sometimes they felt two-dimensional. The only gripe I have with this is that how he seems so ignorant to some things... more>> when he should at least have a vague idea about it. <<less

At first, I was skeptical about this novel because cultivation themes are typically found in Chinese literature. However, the more I read, the more I appreciated its depth. The story is profound, and the characters are well-developed, interesting, and philosophical. This is one of the best Korean cultivation novels I have ever read.

In this novel, extensive chapters are complemented by brisk segments skillfully arranged around power levels and regression. The author seamlessly incorporates the popular trope of reincarnation, adding a layer of freshness to the narrative. What sets this story apart is the protagonist's approach to each life, navigating it with a clear sense of purpose and an unwavering commitment to moral standards.

While the trope of time loop often revolves around the idea of rectifying the past for a superior future, our protagonist's journey offers a unique perspective. The novel subtly imparts... more>> the insight that life's course, whether marked by regression or progression, doesn't inherently guarantee an amelioration or deterioration. Instead, it emphasizes the inevitable constancy of change. This distinctive take on reincarnation enriches the plot, with the main character grappling with the profound realization that, irrespective of the temporal setting, life remains an ever-evolving certainty. <<less

Started out amazing, but kind of fell of in my opinion.

It's too wordy in that it has way too many unnecessary details when it comes to the martial arts/ cultivation system. It's like reading a text book. Like, I'm not trying to ascend myself, I don't need to know every. Single. Detail. I dropped this story at c 70-80. Ish.

So far, the story has been excellent. The main character faces challenges and overcomes them in a slightly atypical manner compared to other novels in this genre.

The author's disdain for the dao of stalling and the dao of rushed writing is already a rarity.

... more>> However, I am concerned about the future of the novel, as the story seems to be gradually heading towards the usual xianxia jargon and surface-level "enlightenments."

edit: from ch 70 to now 129 chapters in and the story makes me bawl my eyes out like little baby b*tch. It's good read it. <<less

Amazing novel, with clear goals and differences with each new arc to expand the details of the fantastical world the MC finds himself in.

Similar vibes to 'Mother of Learning', with the mc's hardworking dedication to solve his issue of regression. Can't wait for more chapters to drop

This novel peaks at around ch 40ish. Everything before that is mostly setups and exposition about the world for later use. Everything after is extremely repetitive. MC approaches next realm, can't get past, gets in a fight, achieves enlightenment at the end, dies. This repeats over and over, with the MC bashing his head against a wall the same way instead of attempting something different. And the enlightenments aren't even that groundbreaking. Just for example, one is, "things in martial arts are related to other things in martial arts"... like... more>> what? I'm going to continue and see if anything changes wish me luck. <<less

The foundation of the story background is solid. It was so good that you might feel it was not a story but a diary. The story progression might feel slow, but it was by design. It was a regression, therefore repeat of the same story yet different telling.

The story is really enjoyable to read, to the point it is basically all I've been doing the past couple of days.

But even more impressive than the story is the translator. He pumps out so many chapters a day and keeps such a high standard for quality, I have no idea how he does it.

I'd highly recommend this novel to anyone. First korean WN I've ever read and it wildly impressed me.

In my opinion, this is a very good novel and the translation is also high quality, at least significantly higher than those almost mtl in some others.

There are some points that make me not give it 5 star, but it is more of a concern rather than a real 'this is bad', at least imo.
    • It is very long, in the meaning that even though it's not exactly a filler and there are connections and plot points in the chapter, it is hardly rewarding, especially in the first few arcs. I personally enjoy these details and think it helps me feel more immerse in the story but it is true that for the first few arcs it feel like nothing actually progressing (since he regress). The feeling of futility of the reader resonates well with the feeling of futility of the character, but if you grit your teeth through it you'll eventually get rewarded. But yeah it's quite a long way till there.
    • Most of the details of the cultivation system is boring and doesn't really mean anything (as of chapter 135), other than the names and the characteristics of the realm. What I'm talking about is like several info dumps of especially names of things to do to advance through small realms and such, this also include the names of most of the martial arts techniques, I swear I can only remember at most 6 from 24 even though they keep coming up and half of them I won't even know what they do.
    • My main point of concern about how long will the story drag on with how untalented our MC is and how there are so many god damn realms that we got a glimpse on, simply a concern that the story will simply won't end (burn out and go into eternal hiatus) or got cut short (something like suddenly MC skip bunches of realms and quickly conclude story)
All in all I find it enjoyable and I personally wouldn't mind give it 5 star if it maintain the current quality.

Tldr

Good story but

    • The first few arcs are painfully slow and unrewarding, possibly make it hard for readers to endure through them
    • There are times when names, details and info dump with at least 70% of them doesn't really mean anything
    • Concern if it'll even end properly because of how long it seems like it going to be

The writing is really good, and each regression builds up to and ends with a high point, but I don't really like the MC. Sure, he works hard, but he pretty much spends all his time just brute force learning what other people teach him and doesn't seem to have any ideas of his own. I guess that comes from the fact he's meant to be untalented, but it's boring to read about someone following the same path everyone else has, just at a slower pace.

In theory, describing the beginning of each return sounds good, but it gets somewhat tiring after the third, even if it is only 1 chapter. The beginning parts of the story are frustrating as our protagonist is dumb (unaware of the world, even after returning a few times, he should've learned a lot of this by the 2nd turn, but he just didnt for plot reasons) and he's pitifully weak, which I find stressful just to read.

Personally, really doesn't fit my liking, and makes me want to punch the protagonist... more>> for being just so damn weak and untalented, and an ant, and weak as shit, and everything under the sun. It's not a cale henituse type of weak, he is stressfully/painfully weak. He learns all of these side skills, but they don't mean anything.

This story is great for me when I don't want to think too hard. <<less
