“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

Whether you like apocalyptic story or not, this one is a must read..

1 - An absolutely wonderful and intense plot..

... more>> 2 - Character development is beautiful..

3 - No loose end, at least I can't think of any..

4 - Also nice translation..

5 - The only thing that I think would be better is that the story should've ended with An Zhe's sacrifice.. His coming back as the spore is quite clichèd.. That's why I'll give it 4.8 /5 stars..

Sometimes it was funny, sometimes sad, sometimes lonely, sometimes adorable, sometimes melancholic, sometimes depressing, but sometimes also hopeful.. Now I'll read this Author's other works for sure..

It made me curious of apocalyptic stories now.. It was truly a memorable journey, one of the best stories I've ever read.. By the way, the translator's profile photo totally matches An Zhe.. That pout and little mushrooms on his head.. I even actually visualized it as An Zhe when I was reading which made it more lifelike and fun.. <<less

I would rate this infinitesimally close to 5 stars.

I love this book. When I first read it, it was like a typical beginning, and some time is spent to introduce the setting and stuff. There were a lot of terms and buildings and science-y things and ideas, but if you don't skip stuff like I did, you won't have a problem with it.

Because the main character is a mushroom, his narrative (third-person, though) is rather mellow, and rather like himself. It's slightly dark the way he looks at humans and... more>> how humans look at themselves, but it kind of made me appreciate the sci-fi bl. It was sweet, poetic, and a bit dark; to sum it up, it was great. I loved it and would 100% recommend it to anyone who is okay reading something that is not completely fluff. Even if you don't want to read a sci-fi, I would still recommend it.

Thanks to Rainbow Turtle for another great translation. <<less

The dialogues in this novel were extremely well written and articulate. The MC and ML’s dialogues and interactions were so fresh and original that I enjoyed every minute of it and then couldn’t wait for their next meeting. It was almost perfect, until the ending.

Spoiler

For me, the novel ended when the MC died. I wasn’t sold on the thought that the “spore” wasn’t his baby, but a part of him, and then resurrected.

For once, I have to say I disagree with the other reviewers. Though tragedy is a heavy part of the novel and Little Mushroom is pretty plot-driven, I really didn't feel all that sad while reading. The only scene that actually made me tear up was the end, when ... more>>
Spoiler

the MC sacrificed himself and the ML found out. Even without the inherent grief from such a situation, the intense emotions were written out very well, and it was, as a whole, a very touching moment. Kudos to the author for that.

[collapse]

I enjoyed the premise of the novel. It's very unique, and the world building is well done. A lot of detail was put into constructing the setting, and I admire how the author interwove the information through out the novel instead of giving us a dump of data in the first chapter. The science behind what they claims happened, on the other hand, is pretty... out there. I think this just has more to do with me being somewhat knowledgeable in physics (it's my major lol), but their scientifical jargon was, at times, nonsensical and a bit of a stretch. They use a lot of fancy terminology that looks impressive but made me go like "uh... what". This really isn't a critique, because they're an author and I wouldn't expect them to know all about electromagnetism and wavelengths and genetic code and what not, and plus, this is a made up world. I'm just putting it out there because personally, it took away from my reading experience.

Actually, I also found myself enjoying the MC and ML. The MC is naive and innocent but still clever, and I loved reading from his perspective as a non-human what the human world was like. I liked the ML a little less, but the concept behind his character as a Judge and the moral dilemma of killing one to protect the whole was fascinating. My only issue was him being a little too perfect, as in
Spoiler

he never really falters? Or breaks down? I know that his whole identity is kind of centered around the fact that he'll never lose control and all that jazz, but I don't think it's realistic for him to be as mentally sound as he is in the novel. I mean, I guess him ignoring protocol for MC and everything that happens toward the end is somewhat indicative of him faltering, but it wasn't to the extent that I expected.

[collapse]

Oh, and one definite plus was the translation. It was fantastic! I sympathize with them having to translate all the terminology and stuff -- it's difficult enough in English, imagine having to interpret it in a different language. Thank you for doing this and doing such a great job!

Anyway, for the TL;DR ers, my thoughts can be summed up like this: Little Mushroom had great writing and world-building, but fell flat when it came to its side characters and characterization outside of the MC. Also, the scientific jargon is somewhat nonsensical, but unless you actively know a lot about electromagnetism or the like, you'll be fine. I rate it a 3.5/5.0 stars (sorry it was just one of the novels that I theoretically knew was pretty good but couldn't really immerse myself into, hence the lowish rating). <<less

The feeling I get from reading Little Mushroom is the same feeling I got from watching Annihilation. I don't have the expertise to understand the science fiction horror written here. All I know, from a literary standpoint, is that the crumbling foundations of human understanding are glued together with mycelium... and we have someone who loves that glue dearly.

I cried...a lot. This was honestly one of those must read novels. And yes, don't be fool by the summary. This novel was filled with heart wrenching, gut crushing, and cry worthy moments. The relationship between the MC and ML was by far perfect but despite many differences and backgrounds, there love were very overpowering. Even as I write my review, I couldn't help myself from getting emotional!

I also love the translator. RainbowTurtle is definitely those really experienced translators. All her translated novels were amazing. I had first started following... more>> her when I read the novel Gurdian and good translated novels just kept on coming and I just love each and one of them. <<less

It's a gem, I enjoyed every chapter of it. Cried a lot and at first thought that this can't end well. My heart was crushed after what he did and couldn't wait for the new update to see how such a situation can be saved. All in all you need to read it or you'll miss big time. At first it'll crush your feelings but the joy at the end is worth it (and the interaction between ML and MC is too funny)

10/10 READ THIS NOVEL!!!

I 100% recommend this novel to anyone looking for the sweetest MC (naive but not s*upid) and the most amazing ML. Slow burn but it is so worth it in the end. Just grit your teeth and remember to keep repeating to yourselves “happy ending happy ending” as you cry on every cliffhanger, and you’ll be fine! This novel is just so lovely and the translator is so amazing. Read it, and hopefully you won’t regret it!

This novel look fluffy but actually is not. But then it looks more than the description says.

Some might not like it because of sci-fi tag. But I recommend to read it half before deciding whether to continue or not. The MC is a very special mushroom and as a mushroom, he didn't know human emotions. To get back his spore, he mix in with humans by acting like humans and trying to understand human's emotions. On the journey to get back his spore, he met Lu Feng (ML) who is... more>> a human. To say it short, this is a mushroom little adventure novel. From this little mushroom perspective, you will see how humans try to survive in the harsh environment, trying to find hope which they doesn't sure to be exist and how to try to continue to keep human kind exist.

Along with the little mushroom, you well learn happiness, sadness, hopeful, despair, and love. When you read this novel, you will feel sweet but at the same time sour. But it is HE so when the storm pass, a spring awaits. <<less

Don't get fooled by the tittle, the story is not light and fluff at all. Hahahaa

It set in apocalypse era, we got our little mushroom as MC. He is cute, innocent, naive, but not s*upid. And we got ML who is an amazingly strong man with principal, who put humanity above anything.

To be honest, I am not a fan of a drama and tragedy genre that's why I am hesitate to read this story. However MC (An Zhe) got my attention ?. He is so innocent and cute in his way. I like how calm he was in every situation despite the world was unknown to him. If I didn't liked this novel, why do I persist to finish it. Though while reading this, I feel nervous, excited and also hopeful for a happy ending. Thus, I recommend this to all,... more>> especially to sci-fiction fanatics like me with a BL twist. My feelings for this novel could totally be summed up as 'complicated' (in a good way). Why? Well, first of all, I definitely enjoyed reading this as it had a well-rounded world plot and development where the MC ventures out to seek for his spore whilst along the way gaining human emotions - including his unique love for the ml. However, further throughout the novel, it was becoming more or less pessimistic and pretty realistic though that does not take away the appeal of the story. In addition, romance... more>> is obviously slow-burn yet it's obviously there (makes any sense?) I felt the whole novel structure could be counted as 'simple' yet at the same time it is very 'meticulously structured' - ehh even I don't know what I'm feeling xD

But without a doubt it is very interesting and intriguing and I totally recommend it, especially if you have read the novel 'Jellyfish' - gives off the same vibe =^~^= <<less

All time you read, say yourself "This is Happy End" This story can be cute and sweet. But this also will be slowly killing you. It's cruelty with anxiety and despair. I love this.

MC is Little Mushroom, who originally didn't have feelings and wishes. He just wanted get his spore. He experiences human life meets new people and become more similar to human.

Relationship with his lover pretty difficult but it's good. They step by step become depending on each other. And they need to do complicated choices. Them hurt, they... more>> hesitate and suffer. And after all this you are really happy when they're happy.

Apocalypse atmosphere and setting also good. You are feel this fear when you cannot do anything and you forced kill people your hands. I also love that even in this times you can see how MC and ML can enjoy time spending together happy.

It's really touching and sad story. If you going to read, you will be cry so many. Not only because sad also because too cute. <<less

This isn't a story where the ML falls in love at first glance. He's actually really untrusting. The MC is a little mushroom... literally. He's really cute and naive but he turns ruthless if you hurt his spore. It's not as lighthearted as it looks in the description but it's so good any way. If that was what you were looking for, well... try this anyway. You'll love it!

This novel is perfection. The summary is completely misleading on how dark and full of despair this novel is.

All the characters are beautifully written and have their own personality. The author beautifully describes the nature and desparation of the people living in this apocalyptic world. The world building, character building all the interactions, , , priceless.

The MC and ML, , , their interactions and seeing them develope their friendship then their relationship. Seeing the ML gently tease the MC and the MC quietly supporting the ML. God this easily my... more>> top 3 novel.

Everything is so vividly written that you can't help but care for the characters and worry about what is going to happen to them.

10/10 recommended. <<less

If I'm to summarize the whole story it should be, "A complex plot but a sweet story".

Although I have come across a ton of reviews mentioning that this is an underrated gem, I took my sweet time to start reading it. I regretted not reading it before, and I regretted that I finished reading it fast. The story is indeed underrated (Maybe not as much as it was before since it got popular with the manhua adaptation).

As the summary says, He is a little mushroom who after a series of... more>> events, comes to the human base to find his spore, where he meets the cold colonel, Lu Feng. The beginning of the story was really sweet which made me so impatient to read faster. The couple interacts a lot as the story goes on. The plot can be a tad heavy but not so complex. The second half, or more or less towards the end of the story it becomes a bit complex (not boring) and sad enough to make you bawl your eyes out for a good few hours. I guess the sugary and sweet extras make up for all the tears I cried during the climax of the story.

I don't think I have anything to say except singing praises and expressing my love over and over again for this story and the characters. This is a story I found the side characters to be unforgettable as much as the main characters.

I loved the ML, Lu Feng; the cold colonel who kills without hesitation but curious about An Zhe, and I have so much love for the MC, An Zhe because,

After all, he's just a little mushroom. <<less

It's.. Okay. Maybe I was expecting too much with how everyone was hyping it, but it's good. The romance is subtle and it has happy ending. The author made up for the subtle in romance in the main story by making the side stories really fluffy.

Will I repeat? Probably not. It was interesting in the very beginning, but even when with the chaos happening, I don't find myself to be absorbed into the novel. I would say it's good for one time read

P/S: read the manhua first! You can read... more>> the first few chapters to get an image of the world/characters (if you need imagination to read novel like me). The art is gorgeous and I think they made a good job at drawing the characters like how it's portrayed in novel. The MC has pure innocent vibe to him while ML is cold and stern <<less

This book is just one of a kind!!! A must read book!!!

Our little mushroom who is the MC is actually a smart person, not a naive kid who came from the wilderness. Although he looks like the incidents happening are unrelated to him, he still feels sad when he loses his companions. He can be called more humane than the other real human.

Spoiler

It was heartbreaking when he left his spore and left the ML leaving just a note. It was very sad when he was nearing his death. It was devastating when he really died after taking just a glance at the ML. But luckily he was brought back to life.

[collapse]

The ML was just doing his job, to serve humanity, to save all the people in the catastrophic times. He was a lone man who is hated by everyone. No one understood why he was so ruthless. Everyone was just blaming him, without even considering they are alive because of this cold man. The ML is not a hard hearted man. He is a bit awkward around people when he shows his kind heart. It is just everyone is so judgy.

Spoiler

He was always teasing our little MC. He just adores him. The ML understood his feelings first. The first kiss was really unexpected. It was a pity the MC took time to sort out his feelings.

[collapse]

Luckily this book has a happy ending. So read without any hesitation!!! Highly recommended!!! <<less

I don't have enough words in my vocabulary to describe what I feel about this novel. It is simply amazing. Probably one of my favorite dystopian novels I have read. The world building here is one of the best I have seem in a while, and although it is quite a melancholic novel, (and I am not a big fan of angst) this was still amazing.

The romance is slow for sure, in fact, the story mostly revolves around the plot (mind you I'm not a big fan of romance... more>> sub-plots) but once it does occur, it hits you in the feels <3

As for the characters, I loved each and every one of them. They all had a certain depth that other stories simply can't match. Not to mention that every character contributes to the plot and there is no flat character that I know of.

Especially when it comes to the main character, An Zhe. The author did a great job on making this character feel alive and I really liked the fact that he was adapting to humanity rather than the other way around. Many science fiction books actually do the opposite, where the MC is a human trying to adapt to the supernatural changes of the world, and this book's perspective on it feels like a breath of fresh air.

Spoiler

Only thing that left me a little unsatisfied was the ending, specifically the extra chapters. It feels like after An Zhe was reborn, their relationship sort of... dwindled? Idk how to explain it, but I do know that they both love each other, it's just that the author should've spent a little more time trying to tie up their romantic relationship. But other than that, I am really satisfied with this novel.

[collapse]

The genre of the novel itself is one of my favorites (other than thriller/mystery) so I was already going in with high expectations, but man, this book took it to a whole new level. It doesn't matter if you are or are not into a post-apocalyptic type book, I can assure you that from the moment you start reading it, you will be completely immersed in it. <<less
