“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

One of the rare novels I wished-for to never end. It is somehow a complex feeling to get when reading novels, you read them, understand their facts and emotions, finish it and ponder over their endings. But it's hard to not being able to leave a novel after its end, even when it's happy, somehow, I want more of everything, more of story, more of characters, more of their future, more of interesting and naked descriptions of feelings, without censorship of a BL novel, and with the realism of bitter... more>> Russian novelists' hate for life and beautiful women. I've always silently read and never commented and such. But I just had to tell anyone who just discovered this story to sit on a fluffy chair, with a blanket, and a comfort pillow cause it will me a sweet and hopeful ride.

Almost every chapter made my eyeballs scald, it isn't something you could say 'sad' or very 'tragic'. But it truly is beautiful and solid, the way the writer wrote it gave the story life The story isn't the usual fall in a dump and wait to die, it's... more>> slow and gave me a chance to hope even without chanting 'the story is going to end happy'.

It isn't heavy, neither is it light. Some chapters may be confusing and some plot holes may appear, but that's okay because the story is just that good.

Some of my favourite moments were when they told the phrase 'do not go gentle into that good night', It's probably easier to understand in the beauty of it's original language. When little mushroom and judge finally met again and little mushroom disintegrated and perished, it was one of the saddest but it's the BEST THE BEST BEST. There's also parts nearing the end when green eyed judge says 'he is the one who judges me' GOSH I love them to death. /Spoiler] <<less

I usually don't write reviews, but this novel is simply too good. I started it thinking it would be a simple, good romance storie but is so much more. The author really brings a lot of existencial questioning as to what is the world, what we understand from it and to what point hummanitty must go to survive, questioning ethics and annalizing the human behavior (the good and bad side). There are a lot of beatifull metaphores that you can extract from this book ... more>>

This novel is about finding hope during the darkest of times. With the setting, there is a lot of ugliness that could have been focused on, and while the ugliness was shown and not hidden, An Zhe's perspective also revealed the beauty of human emotions and relationships - even during such difficult times. Both MC and ML are characterized well. They are not caricatures or stereotyped. They are unique and have their own stories, just as every other character in this novel does. In a time of uncertainty all over the world, this novel gave me some hope in humanity.

Told through the eyes of someone who is literally a mushroom that gained human form and didn't understand anything of humanity, he learns and grows and finds love in a post-apocalyptic world.

The character growth for both the MC and ML is great, and the story is very engaging and moves very quickly.

Whether you like apocalyptic story or not, this one is a must read..

1 - An absolutely wonderful and intense plot..

... more>> 2 - Character development is beautiful..

3 - No loose end, at least I can't think of any..

4 - Also nice translation..

5 - The only thing that I think would be better is that the story should've ended with An Zhe's sacrifice.. His coming back as the spore is quite clichèd.. That's why I'll give it 4.8 /5 stars..

Sometimes it was funny, sometimes sad, sometimes lonely, sometimes adorable, sometimes melancholic, sometimes depressing, but sometimes also hopeful.. Now I'll read this Author's other works for sure..

It made me curious of apocalyptic stories now.. It was truly a memorable journey, one of the best stories I've ever read.. By the way, the translator's profile photo totally matches An Zhe.. That pout and little mushrooms on his head.. I even actually visualized it as An Zhe when I was reading which made it more lifelike and fun.. <<less

I would rate this infinitesimally close to 5 stars.

I love this book. When I first read it, it was like a typical beginning, and some time is spent to introduce the setting and stuff. There were a lot of terms and buildings and science-y things and ideas, but if you don't skip stuff like I did, you won't have a problem with it.

Because the main character is a mushroom, his narrative (third-person, though) is rather mellow, and rather like himself. It's slightly dark the way he looks at humans and... more>> how humans look at themselves, but it kind of made me appreciate the sci-fi bl. It was sweet, poetic, and a bit dark; to sum it up, it was great. I loved it and would 100% recommend it to anyone who is okay reading something that is not completely fluff. Even if you don't want to read a sci-fi, I would still recommend it.

Thanks to Rainbow Turtle for another great translation. <<less

The dialogues in this novel were extremely well written and articulate. The MC and ML’s dialogues and interactions were so fresh and original that I enjoyed every minute of it and then couldn’t wait for their next meeting. It was almost perfect, until the ending.

Spoiler

For me, the novel ended when the MC died. I wasn’t sold on the thought that the “spore” wasn’t his baby, but a part of him, and then resurrected.

For once, I have to say I disagree with the other reviewers. Though tragedy is a heavy part of the novel and Little Mushroom is pretty plot-driven, I really didn't feel all that sad while reading. The only scene that actually made me tear up was the end, when ... more>>

the MC sacrificed himself and the ML found out. Even without the inherent grief from such a situation, the intense emotions were written out very well, and it was, as a whole, a very touching moment. Kudos to the author for that.

[collapse]

I enjoyed the premise of the novel. It's very unique, and the world building is well done. A lot of detail was put into constructing the setting, and I admire how the author interwove the information through out the novel instead of giving us a dump of data in the first chapter. The science behind what they claims happened, on the other hand, is pretty... out there. I think this just has more to do with me being somewhat knowledgeable in physics (it's my major lol), but their scientifical jargon was, at times, nonsensical and a bit of a stretch. They use a lot of fancy terminology that looks impressive but made me go like "uh... what". This really isn't a critique, because they're an author and I wouldn't expect them to know all about electromagnetism and wavelengths and genetic code and what not, and plus, this is a made up world. I'm just putting it out there because personally, it took away from my reading experience.

Actually, I also found myself enjoying the MC and ML. The MC is naive and innocent but still clever, and I loved reading from his perspective as a non-human what the human world was like. I liked the ML a little less, but the concept behind his character as a Judge and the moral dilemma of killing one to protect the whole was fascinating. My only issue was him being a little too perfect, as in
Spoiler

he never really falters? Or breaks down? I know that his whole identity is kind of centered around the fact that he'll never lose control and all that jazz, but I don't think it's realistic for him to be as mentally sound as he is in the novel. I mean, I guess him ignoring protocol for MC and everything that happens toward the end is somewhat indicative of him faltering, but it wasn't to the extent that I expected.

[collapse]

Oh, and one definite plus was the translation. It was fantastic! I sympathize with them having to translate all the terminology and stuff -- it's difficult enough in English, imagine having to interpret it in a different language. Thank you for doing this and doing such a great job!

Anyway, for the TL;DR ers, my thoughts can be summed up like this: Little Mushroom had great writing and world-building, but fell flat when it came to its side characters and characterization outside of the MC. Also, the scientific jargon is somewhat nonsensical, but unless you actively know a lot about electromagnetism or the like, you'll be fine. I rate it a 3.5/5.0 stars (sorry it was just one of the novels that I theoretically knew was pretty good but couldn't really immerse myself into, hence the lowish rating). <<less

The feeling I get from reading Little Mushroom is the same feeling I got from watching Annihilation. I don't have the expertise to understand the science fiction horror written here. All I know, from a literary standpoint, is that the crumbling foundations of human understanding are glued together with mycelium... and we have someone who loves that glue dearly.

I cried...a lot. This was honestly one of those must read novels. And yes, don't be fool by the summary. This novel was filled with heart wrenching, gut crushing, and cry worthy moments. The relationship between the MC and ML was by far perfect but despite many differences and backgrounds, there love were very overpowering. I also love the translator. RainbowTurtle is definitely those really experienced translators. All her translated novels were amazing. I had first started following... more>> her when I read the novel Gurdian and good translated novels just kept on coming and I just love each and one of them. <<less

It's a gem, I enjoyed every chapter of it. Cried a lot and at first thought that this can't end well. My heart was crushed after what he did and couldn't wait for the new update to see how such a situation can be saved. All in all you need to read it or you'll miss big time. At first it'll crush your feelings but the joy at the end is worth it (and the interaction between ML and MC is too funny)

10/10 READ THIS NOVEL!!!

I 100% recommend this novel to anyone looking for the sweetest MC (naive but not s*upid) and the most amazing ML. Slow burn but it is so worth it in the end. Just grit your teeth and remember to keep repeating to yourselves “happy ending happy ending” as you cry on every cliffhanger, and you’ll be fine! This novel is just so lovely and the translator is so amazing. Read it, and hopefully you won’t regret it!

This novel look fluffy but actually is not. But then it looks more than the description says.

Some might not like it because of sci-fi tag. But I recommend to read it half before deciding whether to continue or not. The MC is a very special mushroom and as a mushroom, he didn't know human emotions. To get back his spore, he mix in with humans by acting like humans and trying to understand human's emotions. On the journey to get back his spore, he met Lu Feng (ML) who is... more>> a human. To say it short, this is a mushroom little adventure novel. Along with the little mushroom, you well learn happiness, sadness, hopeful, despair, and love. When you read this novel, you will feel sweet but at the same time sour. But it is HE so when the storm pass, a spring awaits. <<less

My feelings for this novel could totally be summed up as 'complicated' (in a good way). Why? Well, first of all, I definitely enjoyed reading this as it had a well-rounded world plot and development where the MC ventures out to seek for his spore whilst along the way gaining human emotions - including his unique love for the ml. However, further throughout the novel, it was becoming more or less pessimistic and pretty realistic though that does not take away the appeal of the story. In addition, romance... more>> is obviously slow-burn yet it's obviously there (makes any sense?) I felt the whole novel structure could be counted as 'simple' yet at the same time it is very 'meticulously structured' - ehh even I don't know what I'm feeling xD
