)
Rich lady, who was bankrolling his research so she could get into graduate school... decides to become his secretary. This is supposed to be a woman who has completed her undergraduate education in a scientific field, essentially spending years of her life pursuing this career in defiance of her father's wishes that she take over his company.
It was bad enough when during the research, all scientific aspects were done by the MC and his random roommate (who is a freshman) while she just did "logistics" like "fetching water." Even if she is having trouble getting into a competitive graduate program, that doesn't mean she's so incompetent that she would be worse at assisting in an experiment than his freshman roommate!!
Then, after publishing the research she just... quits. Tracks him down so she can join his company as a secretary. "Fetching water" is mentioned again (like that's all a woman is good for), as well as unnecessarily extensive descriptions of her legs.
The only saving grace is that there are not very many female characters to begin with, so you can ignore it mostly.
The nationalism/racism is pretty standard. The occasional pro-China, pro-government line thrown in there, the head hacker of the hacker group Anonymous is, of course, from Mainland China (unbeknownst to all those foreigners who would be shocked to know this... like ok buddy, if it makes you feel better to point that out. You could have just made him Chinese, I wouldn't have cared. Then you killed him off, so I'm not exactly sure what your aim was?)
Foreigners tend to be portrayed as super arrogant and anti-Chinese. I'm not saying there aren't people like that, and I don't want to downplay the discrimination that people face. But it can't be healthy to think that the entire country of Switzerland doesn't like Chinese people. My man, I promise, the people of that country have better things to do than sit around eating chocolate and saying "f*ck the Chinese!" They are not thinking about you that much.
I've seen way worse though, so you can definitely ignore it.
- MC starts out as a kinda smart, everyman-ish type of character.
- Some of the biology stuff isn't gobledigook- though a bit overblown as to 'results and impact'.
- Watching the MC's 'plan' develop is kinda interesting.
The BAD:That VR headset? It's just a terminal device- it needs to connect to the actual 'brain' through the net (the company's servers). You're not pulling all this useful code off- since it wouldn't be there.
Not even going to touch that silly 'hypnosis' segment.
Why quit school? Take a 'leave of absence'.
Don't even know if this idiot has a family- but apparently not, as they wouldn't worry about him dropping out.
How long before this guy decides to 'intelligently' extract a device/method to recharge his USB stick?. He's just burning money without a real plan.
Watching his supposedly 'intelligent' business, investment & negotiation plans is just short of painful.
His ridiculous, questionable, public purchase of a run-down, obssolete data center- only to subsequently, s*upidly invest more into it completely forgets he had an AI and hidden associates that could have done this crap for him secretly, and he could have 'acquired' it after changes were made.
Later, the MC evolves to dumb plans initially involving technological s*avery, unethical experiments, and general 'imperialist', corporate a**holery. Very Gary Stu forced plotting
- This is really just an odd 'this is how I would do this', Gary Stu wish fulfillment story. In particular the personality traits the author 'forces' on the MC are silly 'how a cool guy should act' bs.
- I gave up @ ch77. It got too pointless/s*upid for me.
The Different:- A 'dues ex machina' device that makes other 'deus ex machina' devices? Why am I not surprised?
All the difficulties aside, I was interested to see where this was going (maybe find out who the previous owner was or what happened with all those horror movies) - but eventually I had to give up. 'Not a bad idea', but the author dragged it down till I didn't care. For example there is the Word Government that formed after the fall of the Soviet Union. The MC finds this very strange that somehow all superpowers started working together.
There are at least 2 other people who had the USB Drive before him. The one before him was responsible for the formation of the World Government. He pulled out a Quantum Computer for them that only predicts future disasters. The World Government was formed around the Quantum Computer to prevent the world from getting destroyed. Which almost happened twice since the beginning of the story.
The MC is the 3rd holder of the USB Drive. The 2nd holder turned himself into a metaphysical existence that wanted to take over the consciousness of the whoever the next holder is.
He found out some secret about the USB Drive and got scared as f*ck of the 1st holder. So he tried to hide himself from the 1st holder with this method. He was the one who put the horror movies at the beginning of the story into the USB Drive. Had the MC opened those movies first, the 2nd holder would have succeeded.
The 1st holder was revealed to be the Professor who gave the lecture when the MC found the USB Drive. The MC speculates that it was way too much of a coincidence that it was him of all people that found it. And he was chosen by the Professor for some reason to be the 3rd holder.
The USB Drive itself holds some strange secret. It wasn't always in the form of a USB Drive. Since USB was invented around 1994. The USB Drive can change shape, the reason is unknown.
Places the USB Drive accepts have to be scientifically possible. What falls under "scientifically possible" is up to the author. The movies he chose are understandable.
Another requirement is that the world background has to be detailed enough. The MC tried once a movie, but he couldn't open it. So he put the sequels and TV series into it, and then it was accepted.
It is also hinted that it could be any piece of literature like books or games.
The first feature is that stuff can be copied from movies. To get stuff out of the USB drive requires electricity of equal amount. Something small like pills doesn't require much power. But something big like a car needs a huge amount of electricity to copy.
The second feature is that it can open a portal to the specified world. The MC finds it very strange that the worlds he goes to are always destroyed or wiped out. Even though in the movies there wasn't a hint of something apocalyptic going on.
For example "Ready Player One". When he goes there to get VR technology he finds out that everyone is dead.
Another example is "Elysium" where he gets the MedPod 3000 that can heal every type of injury. He finds out that everyone is dead and only giant piles of bones remain.
The third and hidden feature is that the movies he opens affect reality. He once experimented with making movies himself and accessing the world. He financed a movie where someone made the lesser version of the "Limitless" drug that could cure Alzheimer's. The background was Earth a couple of years into the future, the fictional company and researcher who invented the drug turned up in reality in the same year the movie played out.
Another one was the same disaster that wiped out Elysium turned up on Earth and almost killed everyone if the MC hadn't intervened.
