As much as I liked Scum Villain, I wasn’t completely sold on how the ML turned into a cry baby and guilt tripped the MC into loving him, and I thought this novel would give the idea a different spin. However, it seems this novel is worse. There isn’t much character building and I didn’t really understand why the ML fell in love with the MC. It’s even worse the other way around. As the MC identifies as a straight-male, the story doesn’t convince me that he legitimately fell for the ML. It seemed more of a combination of resignation and Stockholm Syndrome. And apart from s*x, or guilt tripping, I don’t see the two characters conversing much. The flat character depiction isn’t just reserved for the two leads; all the side characters are just tropes personified. The MC’s older brother is a brocon, and that’s pretty much all he is, never mind that he’s the heir to a large respectable family. And most side characters don’t even get given names, some are just referred to as “soul-nascent cultivator” or “such-and-such disciple.” With Scum Villain, they actually point out how cannon fodder gets ignored a lot and the MC (and the author) tries it’s best to give the minor characters some life. However, although the MC pre-transmigration complained about the faceless cannon fodder, he does nothing about it post-migration. He doesn’t even know the names of other people in his own Sect (after living there for three years). The book just waves it off as “well the original character was too snobby to remember these character’s names, so I don’t need to bother.” If the characters were bad enough, the plot is also terrible. I’ve flipped between the English and Chinese raw and I think it’s not the matter of the translation; the author has pacing issues.
Some major events
the ten years trapped in the Mausoleum
One of the major character’s family member is put in danger, maybe at the risk of death... then dies without much fanfare.
I should elaborate, it’s not that the writer doesn’t try to make these scenes impactful, they just didn’t succeed. I’m in the middle of the
MC gets turned into a child
If there’s some mystery the character’s are trying to solve, I don’t know what it is and I don’t care.
If there’s a goal the MC is trying to accomplish (getting enough points to leave the transmigration world), it’s not really emphasised on and the MC himself has given up on it.
If I’m supposed to cheer the two characters on in their relationship, I don’t feel enough about them to care, and the raunchy scenes are too censored to mean anything. The rewards for slogging through this mess is minimal (not completely absent) and I have a long list of other books waiting for me to read. This book will be thrown into my “did not finish” list.
- ML doesn’t r*pe or force MC, even though he is still a yandere who is easily jealous and knows how to turn up the spoiled child cuteness to get what he wants from the MC while scaring everyone shitless.
- MC is beyond funny. Even his methods of trying to make the ML a stallion (ultimate harem master) that end up backfiring are truly funny. He curses like a sailor, can be absolutely malicious, and yet breaks down and completely softens for ml. He is also childishly adorable.
- story is intriguing, it drops flags and hints that stimulate all sorts of speculation.
- there is more than one pairing.
- all the puns with mc’s name. His name is chu yu, yu means fish, there are many comments about “eating fish”.... ?
bad points- no explicit “eating fish” scenes, only implying and descriptive (but short) delicious foreplay scenes and post eating scenes.
- the author tends to rant a lot and it can easily get dry. I tend to lose focus and have to reread sections. Some content is actually crucial though...
in the long run though, it’s really enjoyable! Should definitely try it! There’s also plenty of fluff! Will not be disappointed! God Speed Readers!!- Interesting Xianxia world (adding to pros because I've seen some xianxia danmei where the extent of xianxia lore is just a justification for deus ex machina or to include 'dao companions')
- Side characters have a story! Brocon is justified for being a brocon! There's deeper plot!
- Everything moves so fast and there's so much content. Good for a quick xianxia read.
Cons:- Early chapters made me want to die from secondhand emarrassment.
- Everything moves so fast but there's so much content, I got tired of binging by c33 and had to take a break, but after a week I had trouble getting back into it because I forgot most of the story.
MC can be a pro or a con. I don't think he's a horrible MC, but I can see that people might not... more>>I like that at the end everyone gets their own happiness,
except for one elder Fu Lan Xue who chose to punish himself in the loneliness under the valley. This is my first "transmigrated with system style " novel, so it's quite interesting.... but I prefer without it
When you have free time just try it.... nothing to lose
