This is definitely different! I hesitated on reading this for the longest time, and I’m both glad and regretful that I waited! It’s just that complicated of an experience LOLOL.

CHARACTERS:

The characters are the star in this novel, each one is distinct and they all have depth. With the main characters and a couple of side characters being explored fully:

Xiao Yan (MC) : A researcher with a great mind but, lacking a driving force, prefers self indulgence over anything else. For the longest time, he’s been content to simply... more>> exist in the close city of Charles, not really motivated to do much else other than survive. An accident (followed by many others) pushes him pass his bottom line and gives him something to fight for.

Minor Spoilers:
Spoiler

Later we’ll find out that he has a one in a million kind of mind that allows him to think faster than most people. This, paired with his flexible thinking, makes him a very valuable asset.

[collapse]

Heine Burton (ML) : Heine is a Colonel in the special forces. He, much like all of his men, has been injected with a version of the Comet Virus (aka the zombie virus) called the x-virus. This virus has turned him into a super soldier with impressive strength, fighting ability, healing, etc. He’s the cold type of person. He dislikes most people and is germophobic. He takes his job seriously!

Minor Spoilers:
Spoiler

After being exposed to Xiao Yan, Heine starts a descent to obsession. This leads to a lot of dub/non-con scenes.

[collapse]

Jane Wallace (2ML) : Our second male lead. He’s also an x-virus carrier and has quite a complex background.

Casey: He’s the MC’s best friend and fellow researcher. A certified genius.

Mark & Liv & Maya & Winn: Important supporting casts! These are all Heine’s soldiers.

SETTING:

This is set 200 years after the zombie apocalypse began. In this novel, hot weapons are useless against zombies (who not only level up in strength but also have insane healing capabilities.) The only way that humans have been able to fight against these creatures is through the x-virus (which is pretty much a superhuman serum that gives them the same abilities as a zombies but keeps their minds safe.) This virus comes at a great cost to a person’s vitality though, making the lifespan of special soldiers incredibly short.

Anyway, the focus of the novel is not the zombies but the conspiracy! There’s an opposite group that is hell bent on bringing down the people of Charles. In the end, the zombies are more of an afterthought, and it’s a matter of human vs human.

PLOT:

The focus of the plot is exploring the mentality of the main cast. It’s a very mature take on the zombie apocalypse. Kind of gives me western vibes (and not just because the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan was mentioned. Just, the novel borrows a lot of tropes you see in a lot of Hollywood blockbusters. Very grim, very realistic!)

As for the main conflict, there is an obvious antagonistic force and a goal to work towards, which helps the story move along.

ROMANCE:

The romance in this fic is pretty highlighted. As mentioned the story is quite mature, so don’t expect it to be a sweet kind of romance. There are triggers everywhere for people who are sensitive to dub-con and non-con. In the end, the ML’s state of mind is definitely not healthy (and neither is ML#2’s). It’s very realistic though, there’s a reason for everything (not to say that it’s okay given that there is a reason, just that the psychology and the power elements of the story is pretty well thought out). I suggest staying away if you’re sensitive to such subjects because the story doesn’t hold back on much. Be it gore, violence, or non-con.

RATING:

I give this story a rating somewhere between 3.5-4. It might have earned a higher rating if it kept me interested till the end. But by chapter 80, my interest began to wane. Maybe it’s because it felt like the author was dragging things out at that point? Not sure, but I did enjoy the story regardless of my feeling towards the end! It’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. It’s dark and perhaps too mature for some, but I thought it was interesting! <<less

First of all, I read this for the zombie (s).

Dayum those gore are beautiful. I love how when the zombie coming (insert sfx brainzzz) author did not shy away from vivid description (thank you translator for the awesome work!) that I absolutely love.

Now, the romance between main CP, hmm, I do feels they are not exactly to my liking but it is alright.

I ship Gordon x Ervel more tbh. I means like, they only have so little screen times but I genuinely cry when I thought something bad happen to... more>> Ervel.

Also, Mark, will you ever confess to Liv? And Winn, are you in love with Lauren or not?

Author are really good at making so many side CP that I ended up rooted more than main CP rofl.

Overall, awesome read, 5* from me. <<less

It is 6AM but I have so many things to say and I registered an account just for this.

First, I love, love this novel. I had it on my to-read list for the longest time but some of the negative reviews deterred me from picking it up. Now I regret doing so and will have to remind myself to stop judging based on reviews, especially those written by those who haven't finished the novel. I almost missed out lmao

The world-building being AMAZING aside (I usually don't like zombie or apocalypse... more>> settings but boy this was so good), I love the MC and the way his mind works. In the beginning, his attitude is pretty much "I'll follow where the wind blows" and finds value in living a comfortable life, which I think is perfectly fine. Then enter the ML. I love watching the MC's determination to improve himself slowly solidify as the ML both motivates him and lends every helping hand he possibly can to help him do so. Instead of being the kind of ML that is satisfied with merely watching over the MC, the ML actively strives to make the MC stronger and help him accomplish his goals. While some view his methods to be cruel, they are explained throughout and near the END of the story (here lies my dissatisfaction towards some of the reviews).

There seem to be some doubts about their relationship, but some reviews have covered them spectacularly well so I'll just talk about a few.

Spoiler

Some say the ML is too cruel, but it is explicitly stated that he's the type who prefers to express some tough love over letting the situation slide which may bring about severe consequences to the ones he cares for. He applies this to both his subordinates and his loved ones, and they and the MC accept this. Near the end of the novel his actions and mentality are explained and so many things become clear.

Regarding the argument that the ML's actions have made the MC unknowingly become more susceptive and accepting of their relationship, there is an amnesia/memory disorder segment in which the MC cannot recall the time in which their relationship developed. If anything, following the memory disorder, he's terrified of the man as he only remembers the ML breaking his shoulder and his outwardly cold character. To simplify, their relationship is built again after that without mental invasions as the author's way of showing that they belong together. I have to accredit this observation to the Wattpad translator and I'm grateful for it.

I just have to mention the breaking the shoulder thing lmao - the ML really shot himself in the foot with that and he realizes it. The MC tells him something along the lines of "Sry I rly can't remember much other than when you broke my shoulder/ hurt me" and the ML leaves the room, only to lean on the door outside in anguish. I love their relationship but this one bit felt good to read lmao. Like, yes you've done so much for the MC but that doesn't mean those events disappeared LMAO. Justice for the MC's shoulder HAHA

Someone said something about the ML knowing that he has limited time only to advance his relationship with the MC despite knowing so. Actually, the ML really restrains himself and tries to distance himself from the MC. However, the MC cannot stop trying to get closer to him and thus the relationship progresses. The ML can't exactly abandon and avoid him either as he prioritizes and attempts make the MC stronger for when he can no longer protect him. As the MC begins to spread his wings, his safety and ability to protect himself in a world where the he is constantly targeted by the enemy is crucial, and so the ML feels the need to give it his all so that this can be accomplished.

Issue of their libido and "overabundance of s*x" - it's literally stated in the beginning that the virus causes the special forces to have much stronger s*xual desires along with other heightened abilities. Also, so what if the MC likes it lmao it's not like this is a short story with no plot and all s*x. He's also infected w/ the virus that the special forces have later on, and I'd say this novel has a good balance- in general, actually lmao. The world-building is great, their relationship development is great, the MC's personal development is great, the side characters are great, etc.

One final bit- The hallucinations are not deliberately pushed onto the MC. It's explained that the virus makes it so that those infected with it may unknowingly cause hallucinations to the party that they're attracted to, no matter how much restraint.

[collapse]

That's all I have off the top of my head rn but all in all I wholeheartedly recommend this novel. If you're still hovering over it, I'm just going to say that I truly liked it and regretted not starting it earlier. If you have the time, try it! :) <<less

(WHEN YOU MEANT TO RATE IT 3.5 INSTEAD OF 4...)

When I first saw the review page of this novel, I was extremely confused.

A plethora of good reviews, a drastically lower count of bad reviews. But then... I read the novel and understood the perspectives all the ratings were coming from.

My (somewhat spoiler-filled) PROS and CONS are down below

Spoiler

PROS :

• This novel has an amount of good points, with ample world-building and some amount of story depth.

• The side characters are characterized well and stand out from one another. I even found myself amused at their antics during missions.

• The author has skill at writing smut scenes, as shown in her other work Strong Offense and Defense (which I suggest you read !!!) Too bad even the best smut writer couldn’t save the alarming subject matter of the smut..

CONS :

• MC is... alarmingly bland to say the least. If he was an otome game character with an affection meter, I bet it’d fill up even if you were straight up beating him to death. The second ML of this story, Jean literally s*xually harasses MC at every turn, but we see MC still treating him with the tenderness of a bosom friend?

Where’s that particularity for Maya, your friend, who has done so much for you? (Or maybe I’m just incensed because I love Maya.)

• And ML? Don’t get me started on the way he fills in the hyper masculine, insensitive ML trope. I’m not going to dispute the opinion that he’s a gentle person considering the circumstances, but he literally crushes MC’s bones in one of the smut scenarios he conjures up??

• One more gripe I have is that despite some people despising the second ML Jean for s*xually harassing MC, they still condone ML’s actions. Why? That’s the ML treatment for ya.

[collapse]

Overall, I don’t think this story is that bad. However, there are some large underlying issues, especially highlighted by the overwhelming amount of smut. <<less

To be honest, this wasn't the best book I read. In terms of romance, action, fiction, suspense, I have read better and I have read much more thrilling pieces.

But what makes this book worth reading is how well put all the above genres are together! At times, I could feel myself on edge as I read and at times, I found myself laughing. The fluff was good enough to warm the readers through the thrill. I found it perfectly engaging and very well-paced.

What I LOVE about this book is how... more>> well-written the MC's growth in the book is. He starts off as someone frail and incompetent, lazy to the max, and turns into someone the reader can be extremely proud of. His growth, his inexperience, his trials, his pain, and his love are very endearing and keeps you hooked.

I totally understand why other reviewers might hate on the ML, but I personally hold nothing against him. He is human, a cold one at that, but he is incredibly gentle when it comes to his love. (A few parts of the book might prove me otherwise, but overall, he is very likeable for me).

The side characters were really good to read as well and easy to connect with. I feel like there wasn't enough closure to some characters and plot holes do exist, but nothing major that might degrade the essence of the book as a whole.

The storyline itself wasn't too unique, but the author's research was very amusing to read and smart.

It isn't perfect, but definitely worth a read. It might be frustrating in the starting, but it eventually gets better. <<less

The world building and the plot deserve a five star but I just couldn’t bring myself to like the MC at all. At first I didn’t enjoy ML being forceful then I found out that he was very gentle and protective person who only wanted MC to become strong and independent.
Spoiler

ML has x-virus which made his physical needs a few times stronger than normal people which ML had a hard time restraining himself in front of MC so the only way to not hurting MC was through illusion or whatever. Throughout the story other people said that ML liked MC but MC was just too dense and Mary Sue.

[collapse]

the only thing that made MC a well deserved protagonist was his brain and that’s it. Even with his brain he can not see through people and always acts like he’s made of a wood.

One of the first danmeis I've ever read, a few years ago??? Lmao, just decided to pop in and leave a review. A must read. It is still in my library and I reread it when I'm bored. I even wrote a sequel where the second male lead gets a man that has slept for 200+ years, a genius (he created the mind device that the MC use) and a top that happened to be the villain's old lover lol.

Anyhoo this is one of my fave.

Great plot

Great character development

Great side characters

ML wants MC to be a butterfly from a cocoon and accompanies him in such a journey by his side. Their chemistry is really good.
Spoiler

In the start, before they get into the relationship as because of the X virus in his body ML cant have intimate contact with MC so to vent his feelings ML makes out with MC in his subconsciousness (when MC is connected to the terminal) without him (MC) knowing. But in actual reality, ML is very considerate of MC

This is the best Apocalypse novel that I've read. I love how the author makes the MC weak from the start then by the ML and his subordinates' guidance, he became strong. The plot is not the same from other apocalypse novels (It's superb. 100/10)

Some may think that the ML is too evil for doing that to MC. But it's Apocalypse, you'll be dead if you're weak. And the ML can't touch the MC because of the virus in his body so he invade MC's mind with those... more>> pe*verted thoughts (that lead to MC being unable to distinguish the reality) .

Honestly, this is so good to read. Please read the novel, thank you. <<less

3/5

Honestly, I agree a lot with Flying Jade's review. This novel was both great and frustrating in it's premise and execution. Eventually I was reading it for the sake of completing the novel, despite being intrigued by the characters and their development throughout the story.

I would rate the translation 3.5/5 - while there wasn't anything explicitly wrong with the translations, something felt off about it (with minor mistakes here and there). Nonetheless, the translator was doing their best and I won't disparage them for that.

But unfortunately I felt that I... more>> was missing out on the little details that are pretty important for a novel like this (I still don't really understand how the "mind battles" worked) but I can't be sure if that is due to something being (quite literally) lost in translation or if it has to do with the author's way of writing it.

Spoiler

plus the final battle was just confusing to me in general - both the mind battle and their subsequent escape

[collapse]

overall I would say it's a decent read and I may come back to it in a few years if there is another translation done (just to see if it's the "lost in translation" aspect or the author's writing that made this novel confusing in general) <<less

This is one of the apocalypse stories that I love. The ML is sooo cool (and secretly a pe*vert hahaha) and the MC is clever. Though not too overpowered, they are a strong couple. I have read this novel for a long time ago, but suddenly want to re-read it. 😉

Its honestly a 3.6.

Feels like an action movie type of novel, with all the ups and downs of the protagonist, the action, the thrill of the chase, the evil villain, the conspiracy, the love interest this novel completely embodies a movie.

You also need a lot of patience with the MC since he has a low EQ or in denial it can be both. ML also is on a thin line but the author has clarified some stuff that made.... it tolerable. Grey areas all around. Also a lot of colorful... more>> description of s*x scenes so if you're looking for steam, it got plenty.

This is a mixture of the matrix, inception and other sprinkles of YA novels.

Thank you translator for sharing this novel to us, I appreciate your efforts and hope to see more translations, keep up the good work!

The translation for this novel is good but a little bit messy and careless and cut and pasted together from 2 different translators.... so add more patience to that you already have on hand.

------- c14-c26 links from elpis creation are broken, so I suggest searching online for other alternatives for those chapters

Warning: Though non-con, dub-con and r*pe are there... but nonetheless its a good entertaining novel felt like watching a film, not the best but good popcorn film.

also I don't like reading reviews who haven't finished the novel and rated it, I prefer people to say they dropped it and not add to the ratings cause its plain rude and mean. <<less

This is really nice for an apocalypse setting. I hope people will give this a try because this is really nice. I wasn't frustrated at all when I read this and I had already read this twice. I came back here to read again and have encountered the bad reviews other readers gave. Just wrote this review to encourage other readers to give this a try because this is really good.

This novel was a rollercoaster of emotions, it's so good but sometimes is so insanely frustrating that arghh.

Definitely not for everyone, there are a lot os elements that can make you super uncomfortable, but the story caught me and I couldn't stop reading.

The couple is complex and hard to determine if its good or bad, but I think I love them for the most part, I just think that some moments are kinda lacking.

Although I wound give it a full 5 stars I don't think it deserves just a 4.

I got to say this story is a solid 4 for me.

The consent issue is practically nonexistent so if you don't like dub consent or coercing this story is not for you.

This novel is about a student researcher thrown into an unexpected mission with the military elite in a apocalyptic world. There is a lot of science fiction elements.

Overall I like it, I doubt I will read it again but there is enough action, drama, tragedy, mystery, fantasy for the reader.

I always walk by this novel but never got encouraged to read until friday I read the review of Stray and I got to say I agree with her points/arguments. OMG I really loved this novel! Well Just MC which I found too indecisive and dumb sometimes at the beginning however he grew on me.
What I find most interesting is ML, his character settings, the way he advice/counsel or warn people, Body settings, his restraints, power and his love for mc! The second thing is how the author and translator describes the world which is very vivid and the plots

I am Not gonna dive in it too much (I'm lazy sighhh* -_-) , you could read the review of Stray or other good reviewers.
All I got to say is that Overall it is a good novel I like it, So I recommend!

This is a novel that is a Zombie apocalypse. I adore the complexity of the society building, character design, and character development of mainly the MC and ML. The flaw of their personalities and the detailed change of their capabilities makes the characters more human-like in the zombie-infested world.
