The Passerby, He Turned out to Be the World-Ending Boss

Shen Jie found himself in the body of a passerby in a post-apocalyptic novel. The passerby was an ordinary person without any superpowers, just a low-level employee at the research institute. Besides conducting experiments, his usual role was to liven up the atmosphere by clapping and shouting “666”.

Shen Jie was quite satisfied with this new identity and even found a suitable partner along the way. Although his partner often went on business trips and was taciturn, he had broad shoulders and a narrow waist, capable of doing half a month’s work in a day. With this new life, Shen Jie felt content and happy every day.

After living an ordinary life for seven years, a voice suddenly appeared in his mind: “Do you want to change the fate of a cannon fodder, experience an extraordinary life? Do you want to find the meaning of life, save the broken world? The Cannon Fodder Reversal System is at your service!” “I don’t want to,” Shen Jie replied without hesitation.

The system felt depressed. It had accidentally come online seven years late, only to find its bound host wanting to live a simple life with his partner, ignoring the impending doom of the world. Even as the world was on the brink of destruction, they were still in love—

Until one day, the system discovered a secret. The soul of the host it was bound to seemed to be the culprit behind the world’s destruction.

…Help, host, please just remain an ordinary person!

Many people in the Center of Abilities knew that Zong Lin had a beloved person he cherished dearly. This cold and taciturn human, one of the strongest superpower users, after piercing the hearts of the aliens with his spear every time, would take out the pocket watch his lover gave him and kiss it gently with his deformed hands. It was like a deep prayer, as if he were willingly trapping himself in a tender prison of love.

Rumors had it that Zong Lin’s beloved was just an ordinary person with no strength to speak of, except for a pretty face. One day, Zong Lin’s beloved was abducted by an SSS-level alien. Zong Lin went berserk, leading a group of people into the alien’s nest. There, they saw Zong Lin’s beloved holding a knife to the alien’s neck, smiling sweetly: “Two choices. One, you extend your neck for me to stab. Two, I push the knife in. Which one will you choose?”

I especially liked the first half where the MC's interactions with the system and his fellow humans were a bit less predictable because of the

I do wish he and the ML had more cooperation or screentime together... it felt a little like the ML went with the "quiet strong guy" trope a bit too much because they didn't talk much even when they were together.

The plot is interesting but it is a bit slow at the beginning. The love between MC and ML seems abrupt and like love at first sight but you will understand they have a deeper and past relationship with each other as you read. The cause-and-effects and timelines and parallel worlds were used wonderfully and brought more sides to this novel. Everything is connected.

I don't know how other people rate this book with such a high rating. I started reading with high expectations but then it was crushed almost like haah? Am I reading the same book they are reading?

there are so many parts that don't make sense. The writing is long-winded. There are so many frustrating contradictions. This book is very annoying.

If true love exists, it would be Zong Ling and Shen Jie’s love for each other across different worlds and timelines. They were already together from the start but their journey before that (in different times, worlds/parallels) was more heart wrenching and sweeter than I imagined.

It's a journey of Shen Jie learning how to love and not wanting to lose it despite his own nature. And Zong Lin not being a braindead lover but someone who sticks to his principles while still being the only person to wholeheartedly be on Shen Jie's side. (If he ever becomes an alien, he can't kill him. He might just lock him up together somewhere he wouldn't be able to hurt anyone, take care of them until they both turn into ash 🥹). Everything was connected and planned by Shen Jie, from the system and the safety of the world, it was a sacrifice. But Zong Lin managed to become his anchor even when he become the omnipotent eternal god who's perception of himself is close to none.

”Zong Lin, you are my greatest anchor”

I want to forget and reread this again. I thought it was simply an OP MC trying to hide his identity, getting discovered, solving the problem with the ML, and the end. But it gave me more than just a rollercoaster ride. 🥹 <<less

I have picked this up two weeks ago and immediately fell for it.

Both MC and ML are interesting characters. They are already together when the story starts which might be turn off for some (I like it). We do learn of their past slowly through flashbacks and their present interactions are fun.

It's the trope of overpowered MC wanting to remain a passerby, quietly living his own life and as is usual in this theme, the world is just not letting that happen. Though we also learn that his life has... more>> not really been all that ordinary anyway. The way it's written however seems really fresh and entertaining and I enjoy every time we get to discover more.

After the TL is finished, I will probably reread in one go and also update this review then. <<less

A mesh of infinite flow+dungeon breaks with our very OP couple.

MC seems to have some special background whilst trying to remain passer-by A. (Not really, he's abit of an unreliable narrator. He's really popular amongst the ability users)

The premise and all seems good, but the execution of the story and flow is a little jumbled up. I skipped ahead a little since the starting flow is quite predictable. It's a good short story about someone (with backstory. Tm) pretending to be a passer-by while saving the world.

It's okay, I think the premise is interesting and the idea is quite fresh. I see a lot of people seems to enjoy it, but personally it's a little boring to me. The pacing also threw me off. I think you can keep going if you want, but if you're also bored in the first >20ch of the story dropping is ok too. That's already a quarter of the novel, the story continues to set itself apart with unique themes but. I mean if it's not to the personal taste... more>> then nothing can be done. <<less

I misunderstood the summary. I originally thought this novel was going to be about how MC transmigrated into the body of the villain and his path to not becoming said villain. Nope. Instead, it's about how he, the villain, transmigrated into the body of a human. Big difference.

Reading further, it seems a bunch of characters also thought the same as me and it came to bite them in the ass lol.

MC worked hard to understand humans and act as one. It is made apparent right from the beginning that he... more>> wasn't always human as he makes a conscious effort to behave according to his observations of them.

To describe the MC– He is highly intelligent, but somewhat tragic, in a way. He is bored, tired immortal being that sleeps the long years away, with brief periods of wakefulness that he uses to devour. MC is a world-ending monster that ultimately disguised himself as a human in order to stay with the human that taught him to love. On that note, I would just like to mention that MC is not actively trying to destroy the world. It's just that
Spoiler

he exists to bring an end to worlds. That is his purpose in the universe. He is only born when a world is near its end and devours even when asleep.

[collapse]

The plot of the novel involves solving apocalyptic horror mysteries, understanding the truth of MC's identity, and others finding out his identity, as well as the misfortune that follows.

I really enjoyed the power system the author created. It was very unique, with seven "laws" of Death, Life, Soul, Nature, Fate, Rule, and Space. The concept of mist in an apoclyptic setting and the different rankings of power depending on which side they were on was also intriging. There were so many little details that this novel really s**ked me right in.

There do seem to be a lot of contradictions with the MC and his past, but the timeline becomes more clear later on, especially in the extra chapters where everything is laid out. There's time reversal, rebirth, and an ability that traps people in long nightmares, so the timeline can get a bit tricky. At first the extras sort of seem like AUI fan stories, but they are actually part of the plot. Again, those with Soul abilities can mess with peoples heads, so what we see isn't always real.

ML has the strongest Soul abilities in this world and that is a highly important point that comes up multiple times throughout this novel. It is the cause of a lot of different things, including MC and ML's first meetings.

It is established early on that MC and ML have been in an official relationship for seven years already. They are mature, have a clear trust in one another, and know each other well minus the world-ending, non-human doomsday boss thing. They are also very in love. And though it's not described in detail, they frick quite lot. I swear, once they have any time alone, they're either fricking or on a date. Sometimes, all MC cares about is cooking ML dinner and all ML cares about is make sure MC eats dinner. The System always hides when ML is around because ML's power category and strength is highly likely to be able to sense it.

And speaking of the System, to be honest, it wasn't that prevalent, but there is an actual reason for its existence. It's not just a random system from some irrelevant world that binds to hosts for no significant reason. Rather, it's an
Spoiler

AI made by the future self of a human character present among the cast that is given life with the Soul ability, as well as handed Chen Shushu's power of materialisation and bestowed with a healing ability by a deity ;) we also get to meet.

[collapse]
MC actually figures out what the System is and who sent it in the first chapter, but we as readers don't know that until much later as he doesn't dwell on it.

This novels has its share of comedy, as well as some truly heart-wrenching scenes. There's a lot beneath the surface and a lot many people don't remember, along with many things that MC keeps to himself.

What I really enjoyed was ML's trust in MC. For instance, MC did love ML before this, but at one point seven years ago, he was told by the head of his institute to essentially seduce and partner up with ML– to keep their relationship stable so ML would always be satisfied and his infection rate wouldn't increase, thereby ensuring humanity would always have a strong fighter on their side. Except ML knew and still believed in and loved him wholeheartedly. I did have a laugh when their roles were basically reversed and later ML was the one being told to satisfy MC so
Spoiler

he wouldn't destroy the world lmao.

[collapse]

The novel talks a lot about how ML has always restrained himself, from not being too rough with MC, from not accidentally harming him, from not making MC's identity as his lover known to the wider public so he could protect him. But then we see from MC's side. How he's had to work hard to not devour ML and destroy the world. How much he's had to hold back so he could stay human if only for a short while longer. Exactly what he's held back and how close he is to snapping. It's funny but it's not. There's so many parallels and things these two gave up for love.

I truly loved reading this novel. It's worth five stars without a doubt. <<less

Rather good world building with some minor issues.

The pacing is good and the storyline works. The emphasis lies somewhat with the love story, though MC and ML are a old couple and already married for 7 years.

I do kind of dislike that there is not much communication between them and MC didn't reveal himself early to his partner. But on the other side I really like how MC is trying his best to be "normal".

... more>> His hubby is his whole world.

The "alien" apocalypse here is not really aliens in my opinion. Basically the alien are "corrupted" people and other organisms. There is a mist seeping into this world which corrupts people and if you reach a certain point of corruption you will start to mutate and lose yourself and only want to destroy and devour. Well, there are also people who keep some sanity, which is even worse in that case and there are some people that awakened super powers through their corruption.

So ML is the number one super power guy and MC a powerless human working a lazy job in the research center.

It was rather fun to see this story from the god perspective. Knowing that MC is the end boss and then listening how his colleague is complaining about their mediocrity, the system wanting him to be a savior of the world and an evil alien cult that wants to wake up the "king" (basically MCs mainboddy in the void) to destroy humanity. While MC just wants them all to stop prodding and annoying him so that he can enjoy and have more lovey-dovey time with his husband.

The story has a nice balance of action and fun. I would recommend to read it, but don't think it will be something I can read more times. ML is a bit too 2d for this to bea real power couple. <<less

This unlimited flow novel is set in an alien apocalypse, and has quite a few elements to it that I've not seen before, like an infection rate in humans that when maxed out will turn them irreversibly into an alien, and strange superpowers with a sort of guide/omega-verse adjacent element to them. Around the halfway point, this also turns from unlimited flow to a pure sci-fi fantasy action novel, with a lot of mythology and world building.

Unlike a lot of other unlimited flow novels, MC gets thrust into different situational... more>> instances that don't have much correlation or pattern, and he also has no intention of clearing- he just wants to go home to live out an ordinary life with ML. Unfortunately, neither of them are very ordinary, with ML being the strongest human but also basically constantly on the verge of transforming into an alien, and MC being his (classified) legal partner who as the title suggests, isn't as weak or even human as he appears.

The story starts with them already 7 years into their relationship, but their interactions still feel fresh and exciting. Their love story is pretty convoluted plot wise, but their feelings for each other are straightforward and compelling. Beyond his love for the MC though, the ML doesn't really have much of a personality, and he mostly just exists as an anchor point for the MC's character development.

While this was overall a great read, I do highly recommend reading it in one take, as it's easy to lose track of the many side characters in the cast, as they don't have very distinguishable personalities and therefore can be hard to keep track of. Many characters that weren't important when introduced suddenly became important during climactic scenes, only to vanish again when their usefulness ran up.

The latter half of the plot also was a bit too convoluted for my taste, and it was quite the mental exercise to figure out the timelines. I had to re-read a few chapters to understand what was going on. Not sure if it's my problem or just the writing itself that made it difficult to keep track of all the new mythos and plot points introduced after the unlimited flow plotline, but this is definitely a novel that needs your full attention. <<less

This novel has its merits, but it doesn't align much with my personal taste. Right from the start, there's a lot of action, which wasn't exactly what I was looking for. I prefer stories that explore more psychological concepts rather than action itself.

I started reading it because the tag indicated it was a slice of life novel, but I felt that even though this seemed to be one of the story's intents, I hardly saw this element being explored. However, I loved the characters. Both the main and supporting characters,... more>> including the villains, are super charismatic.

The interactions between the main characters are adorable and make me feel that if there were only one couple in this world, it would be them. They are super cute together.

In the end, the novel went a bit crazy. Although it wasn't unjustifiable, it's not really my vibe. <<less

One of. My favorite series. A reasonably sized novel, it came, told it's story, and left. Love that in this world of series' of 3, 000 chapter, never ending novels. The story starts out a bit slow and a bit unique. MC and ML already know each other and have been dating for 7 years by the time the novel starts. Actually better than I thought. It made me think of Evil As Humans but different and with its own merits. I don’t think the current ratings give it justice.

The story is set in an apocalyptic world, basically humans vs aliens, except humans can also become aliens and have similar abilities. The story was not boring despite the MC hiding his powers for most of the show. It remained relatively lighthearted but also action packed. I think the main attraction for this novel isn’t any thought provoking theme or imaginative storytelling... more>> but the romance. The couple has already been together for 7 years when the novel begins, which means we don’t get the ‘falling in love’ part, except for flashbacks. While that might be a minus for some, I think this story managed it really well. It just seems very natural and not forced at all. The couple also radiates chemistry and is tooth achingly sweet but also very chill, a vibe that old married couple gives off, which makes sense. I really enjoyed their love story and how it overcomes all. Despite the misunderstandings and secrets, there was never a betrayal but always acceptance between the two and that’s wholesome.

That is to say it isn’t without flaws. I think the system is irrelevant at times, same as with the original protagonist. There is no big conflicts since MC power-scales everything, which means it’s mostly emotional problems with love being the solution. The side characters aren’t delved into deeply with main focus largely on the MC and ML. Some side characters that felt important were glossed over, such as that youngest S-level researcher. The introduction of the brother was a tiny bit abrupt. Some of the side plot lines were not expanded on and just roughly mentioned. However, I think its pros outweigh the cons, with it being pretty entertaining. I appreciate the MC a lot especially and the ML was adorable as well. A very decent read. <<less

Man, I love this story so much <3 I MTL the rest of the story because I was impatient so some parts I might get wrong, I'll just start with what I love then what I don't then my personal view of the ending. Also be aware of spoilers in here because it's my first review and I don't know how to use spoiler, also I'm not trying to write a genius rank essay here so my paragraphs might divulge off topic and sometimes sound confusing (not native English speaker) (oh and any brothers and sisters getting close to the ending remember to grab tissues, I made the mistake to not expecting the ending to be something real cheerful or sum but I ended up crying rivers and now my bed is wet :D).

I love, love how the author made Shen Jie and Zong Lin's relationship have an actual connection through the universes and what Zong Lin did for him at the end of the story it's so sweet, I like how in the character arc such as Lin Ze and Jiang Fan's backstory was mentioned and why they degenerated into aliens, I love b@d@ss Shen Jie is and his mind game at the end of the story was crafted to his liking, I love how at the end Zong Lin won't let him be misjudged by the people he saved and created a name for him throughout the universes it's too sweet for my heart I'm melting, this novel is great REALLY I recommend reading there was barely anything I'm dissatisfied with but ofc that's my personal opinion and preference...

Although everything in the novel like the character personality and setting was satisfying I didn't really like how the novel plots were all pushed together, like Shen Jie and Zong Lin only got like 2 days to spend together, and then literally on the next day they're out and about jumping around with the aliens again, it felt kind of rushed. I wish the two of them could've gotten more time together and about the situation at the end though they got 6 months together but there wasn't much mentioned about it and I'm still sulking, I want them to spend more time together. I also kind of hate how the author actually instilled despair into me making me really panicked about whether they'll get a HE or BE (because I couldn't find if it said HE or BE anywhere) I'm just dissatisfied with the ending I guess because they had to wait before reuniting but it's good that they're together again <3

So personally I hope the author go dunk a bucket of cold water on themself for making me cry buckets while waiting for the result of their ending, Xiao Jie and Xiao Lin deserves each other, the timelines are kinda confusing but Xiao Jie fell in love with Zong Lin in his first world (the already broken world) and it's sweet how he actually turned time back to meet Zong Lin again... Ofc Zong Lin returned the love by travelling through spaces to provide Xiao Jie with more believers, their ending was deserving but I'm sad I can't find a website with the extras... *going to cry to myself now*

It was great. I'd say it's worth giving a try regardless of the negative reviews. This is a novel best read all at once. Otherwise it'll get confusing. I won't spoil it but the plot is heavily influenced by time distortion/travel. Personally, I thought the plot was quite interesting once I got to the end. I didn't expect it. And it has enough cliches to satisfy me. I thought it was infinite flow but it's not really. Don't let the first few chapters discourage you. I like how the relationship... more>> is already 7 years in. So there's no true buildup to a relationship. However there is growth. And the extras are a must read. I dropped this novel. Although I liked the MC and ML and their chemistry enough, there wasn’t enough romance in this first part of the novel. The writing style is long-winded, confusing at times. It’s quite a dragging and boring read. I keep waiting for the romance to heat up and just make me feel more. But even with the high stakes and soul merging/consciousness merging, it read like a subpar plot of Inception for this part.

If you’re someone that prefers romance focused danmei, skip this one. Although it is... more>> hinted that romance is the core reason for everything, the writing up until this point isn’t very gripping and romance is lackluster. <<less

This is such an interesting book! The only downside is that you'll be caught off guard with the shifting of point of views. Especially the MC since he has multiple personalities (or should I say clones?), it can be quite confusing at times. BUT! In my opinion, the author did try to put together the parallel worlds, past and present and other dimensions to seamlessly bring the story to life.

AND I JUST LOVE LOVE LOVE established relationships. They are so sweet, and please... all Shen Jie wanted was to... more>> be lovey-dovey with his Hubby. The last chapters were touching. It's giving "I'll build a cult for you."

I used to avoid unlimited flow novels, but this novel really change my perspective of the genre. This has really been an eye-opener for me. Like am I missing something... I've only ever read Global Examination for unlimited flow but the premise is a little bit the same. This made me understand how unlimited flow works. I also avoid system novels, I don't read them that much because I sometimes just get annoyed, surprisingly this one has a tamed system. Maybe because it is forever 8 years old lol And he doesn't really appear that much. Only on the first few parts of the novel. He's not grating, so I guess you could say I was able to tolerate it.

Either way, this novel may not be everyone's cup of tea but it is surely one of the easiest novels I've read this year. Give it chance. <<less

Unexpected.

Based on the synopsis and title, this novel took me by surprise. I thought it would be a simple OP main character pretending to be weak for some absurd reason, a simple romance with a basic BL male lead. I probably would have still enjoyed that. I'm easy to please. But such a thing wouldn't be worth five stars. It wouldn't be worth writing a review for.

Instead of the above, I got a story about a character with something he desperately wants. He wants a beautiful world. He wants love.... more>> In a sense, at the start of the story, he already has that, and now he just needs to hold onto it. But holding on to these things that he wasn't born to possess is hard. Harder probably than anything he's ever done. But he's so happy to do it.

I don't want to spoil anything, but it's hard, because I want to share my thoughts. Sometimes we read stories that help us see the world in another light. This was that for me. The story kept building upon itself, one small stone at a time. Each element, each interaction, each event stacking up and up in a seamless link. Every piece enhanced the story, making it better, make it bigger but also infinitely smaller. This is Shen Jie's story. But it's also the story of his lover. It's the story of a dying world. But in the end, it's still just Shen Jie's story.

The growth of the story isn't linear though. The end of the story enhances the beginning of the story. Things you learn later make moments that earlier even more poignant and beautiful, without the text needing to bring it up again, like dye soaking through layers of cloth.

The extras are hardly that. Yes, the story itself can be finished without them, but the value the extras provided, all the way up until that very final chapter, until the very final interaction painted with words on my laptop's screen, would make it a travesty to skip them. I often feel the extras are just that, extra. But in this story, they took what was already an amazing, wonderful story and in just a few moments, retold it in a way that made it even more beautiful.

I'll be thinking about this story for a long time. Was it perfectly written? No, and in fact, there were a threads got lost along the way. But it doesn't matter. Because this story still gave me a breathless experience. Because it made me leave my own view of the world and see a world through another character, and that world was beautiful. <<less
