After Returning from the Infinite Game

The world always has those protagonist-like individuals—escaping from horror games, bearing the responsibility to save the world from monsters alongside their companions. Due to such and such reasons, they have no choice but to live in ordinary citizens’ homes, outwardly portraying themselves as typical high school students while secretly battling monsters and leveling up.

And the ordinary citizens are ordinary but kind, always tolerant of the protagonist’s late returns, providing a gentle sanctuary.

Jiang Yujin, however, is the antithesis of that ordinary citizen. Running a struggling business, living an unkempt life, the protagonist attends school by day, fights monsters after school, and even returns home to do his laundry and cook for Jiang Yujin.

Yet even a laid-back person needs to turn things around. Despite financial deficits, Jiang Yujin briefly stands tall.

While the protagonist battles monsters, he helps someone find their lost cat. While the protagonist tirelessly protects the school from monsters, Jiang Yujin is involved in romantic escapades with the Special Investigation Unit for Strange Species (?!). While the protagonist hunts for clues behind the scenes, Jiang Yujin, with a small skirt in hand, pretends to be a rich lady in an online romance scam.

When the protagonist and allies face a major monster, Jiang Yujin… well, he stays up all night playing mahjong and ends up lying dead drunk at his doorstep.

When the protagonist finds themselves in a precarious situation…

The dead lying at the doorstep vanished.

——

Beside the massive monster’s corpse, in front of the protagonist’s group, a man with snow-white hair blowing backward, holding a blade stained with threads of blood.

Amidst the silence, Jiang Yujin, the ordinary citizen, lowers his eyes, bending slowly with the blade’s support:

“Urgh—”

Surely shouldn’t have had those two drinks after playing mahjong.

Protagonist’s group: “…”

— —

Xu Tonggui, captain of the Special Investigation Unit, known as the living Yama in everyone’s eyes, a workaholic whose life revolves only around his job. Everyone thought he would remain a lifelong bachelor. Even the members of the Special Investigation Unit believed so.

Until one day, they saw their captain pinning down someone whose hair was so disheveled it covered their face, gritting his teeth as he asked in a low voice, “Drinking again?”

The hair covering half the face was lifted by a large palm, and the person pinned down on the car glanced sideways—

That day, the members of the Special Investigation Unit understood two things:

Never underestimate someone who seems unkempt.

The captain has a damn good eye.

Cute, silly, funny. A quick read with a romantic sub-sub-sub plot lol.

They only really get together officially near the very end but there is extras that are nice to read. Would recommend!

Truly an enjoyable read! Unlike most horror intense world. This one start off with what happened after they came out and even it leaked to the real world. Our MC seem like a salted fish, but he is polite, friendly, gossip loving, game addict and “trying “;to raise a high schooler son (which a survivor and a hero too). There’s alot of surprises and of course alot of shenanigan. I have enjoyed every mysteries, battles and MC op ness as well as his salted fish life style. (And... more>> its all his ex boyfriend fault ><) Romance, you won’t find much, but there’s alot of wholesome goodness. This novel is short and powerful. Really a excellent read! Really missed them after read. Recommend read! Tq <<less

Unexpectedly good, I binged this in one day and wish there were more chapters. The romance sub-sub-sub-plot is somewhat similar to Global Entrance Examination but it's nice nonetheless. Our MC is the classic example of a salted fish; lazy, a drunkard, chronic melon eater, and 75% a liar.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between the MC and his adopted son, and this might actually be one of the few novels that exists where the MC raises someone who doesn't grow up to be the ML.

Spoiler

They are surprisingly domestic, with the MC drinking, watching soap operas, and lazing around, and his son, the 'high school student' coming back home to cook, clean, wash his clothes, then sneaking out in the middle of the night to investigate what are basically scenarios in IF novels.

[collapse]

Regarding the development of the MC and ML's relationship:

Spoiler

They had already been in a relationship, in love, cohabitated, etc, before the novel even started so their relationship didn't really have to develop. The gist is that the ML died in the game due to the last scenario, disappeared, then popped back up years later without his memories; so of course the MC decided the ML's better off without remembering him and doesn't make contact.

The ML regains his memory around 3/4 of the way into the novel but there are not many scenes of them interacting.

[collapse]

What I didn't really expect was that the events in the description of the novel happened almost word for word. Everything gets revealed pretty much in the

Spoiler

end of the novel, like the last 3 chapters + extras so we didn't really get to enjoy the chaos of the reveal. Add the fact that the MC's identity is only revealed to his son and his friends, and the few people in the team who were there to witness it, then kept up in wraps afterwords.

[collapse]

I just recognized all the satsugu parallels. The MC literally has white hair and blue eyes, is the strongest and the top ranker. The ML is second best and literally dies, disappears, then reappears LMAO. And their personalities are so similar too 💀 <<less

I love the story so far! The main character is so cute when he pretends to be oblivious and I can't wait to find out the reactions of the people around him when they find out his true identity! The story's pacing is great, and the translation's very clear and easy to understand!

To the translator:

Keep up the good work!

I finished the main story, only extras left. Im still searching for the raw.

Sorry if my review is all over the place

The romance is like a sub, sub-genre, its almost non existent, but its ok. Our ML kinda losses his memory and didn't have it until the end.

Spoiler

MC didn't lie that his ex-boyfriend (ml) work at Special Investigations Unit, its just that ML kinda died and like doesn't remember anything, so MC by default said they broke up. Even when ML ask, MC just answer it vaguely

[collapse]

For the final chap of main story (spoiler)

Spoiler

MC introduce ML to our protagonist boy, who I forgot his name, as his new stepfather, our boy short-circuited because of shock. The family of three moved to the house where MC and ML used to lived before they went into the game

[collapse]

Oh another thing, the author didn't really used the character names to refer to them other than MC and ml. So sometimes, the character will have their name then they will be refer to what they do, leading me to not really remembering their name

For the translator

Thank you for your hard work ♥️! <<less

I dunno why the rating is low, because in my opinion, even though this is not an excellent work, it is still above average.

Objectively, this novel is not a masterpiece, mainly due to the lack of problems faced by the MC, his life is flat, he doesn't experience many ups and downs, he is too OP, etc. But personally, this is one of the top notches on my list of favorite novels

The synopsis of this novel is somewhat deceptive, due to the lack of description of the time and background... more>> of the story. So I'll tell you a little about that

Spoiler
  • This is not the usual unlimited flow novel, more precisely this story takes place after the collapse of the unlimited flow game.
  • MC is the number 1 player in the game who has finished the game with 3 other people. They defeat the strongest monster (aka the creator of the other monsters) causing the collapse of the entire game and returning all surviving players back to earth.
  • Spoiler

The 3 people with MC are ML, the barber, and Shi Bu. MC and ML fight the final boss, and ML kills it, sacrificing his life in the process. To save himself, the game forcibly resurrects the final boss (0), as a result of which ML is also saved. ML lost his memory, was picked up by SIU and treated. MC looked for ML all over the earth, but when they met ML didn't know him, so MC left ML, stayed and adopted a child who also came from the game but had no place to go home. And from that point the story begins in chapter 1

    [collapse]
  • Chen Jing, the child adopted by MC, together with two of his friends investigate the origins of strange creatures that have begun to spread across the earth. They did it while hiding from their families (including MC). MC pretends not to know even though he sometimes helps them secretly if he happens to be around.
  • ML becomes the team leader at SIU, whose job is to deal with strange creatures that appear on earth. And MC, after his separation from ML, experienced a very relaxed life, gossiping with neighbors, doing assigned tasks such as looking for a lost cat, and drinking until the early hours of the morning. However, his assigned tasks are often related to strange creatures, so they often come into contact with the ML or his adopted child.
  • Only a few know MC's real identity and MC also hides it well. So when it was nearing the end of the story where they fought "0" and the MC's true identity was revealed, everyone was shocked.
  • ML get back his memories (before them meet "0". And after they killed "0" MC and ML are back together, living together with Chen Jing, and MC returning to his old way of life, despite being restricted from drinking by both of his family members
[collapse]

I really like MC, his character may not be everyone's favorite but it is my favorite. He is a very relaxed person, not someone who is too passionate about being the best or wanting to be the savior of the earth. He gets along well with his neighbors even though he is very strong. Even though he wasn't a good father by most children's standards, he was the right father for Chen Jing.

I also like ML, he is not someone who is very obsessive about MC, he still lets MC live according to his wishes. And he was good towards Chen Jing. So here it is in the end, I highly recommend it <<less

Highly overrated.

The world building is not even average. The time line seems strange. No background and character build up. 2d characters at best.

I really wonder what people like about this novel?!

About the world building... in my opinion this is the most important part in every unlimited flow story. If the world is intriguing enough, it can easily mark other problems during the story... but not this one. It is shortly mentioned that people and monster feel out of the game world. So there appear strange species in the normal... more>> world and sometimes small dungeons. It sounds good but it does not read good. I don't know how to explain but the monster are always easily dealt with. There is absolutely no suspense. MC is super OP and solve everything super easily.

Unfortunately there is no explanation how MC got so strong or how it was in that game. He just is that op slouch hanging around on his sofa, watching soap operas, gossiping and drinking too much. So the story is kind of boring. It has no hope and downs at all.

The writer threw in that "adopted son" which came out from the game and still fights monsters. It feels really strange to have these intermission of the "kid soldiers ". It's more disturbing than everything else and there really is no family feeling going on. Not sure what the writer intend.

So... reading this novel for the story of action is a fail.

What about the "romance "? Well.... there is n o n e at all. The writer could just skip that one chapter and this would not be a bl. It seems that MC and "ML" were together before and during the game but you will not learn how long or how they meet or anything else about them. There is also no new relationship progress happening. There is no communication at all and MC is telling lies non stop. Even when ML remembered (at chapter 67) about his "ex boyfriend" there wasn't really a touching moment.

The whole interpersonal dynamics are skewed. So reading for romance or cuteness is a absolute no go.

To be honest I was bored and wouldn't read this again. It's not entertaining enough. The only redeeming point might be MCs laid back character if you like that type. <<less

Very good story. I don't understand where the ratings are so low. It's like digging for a diamond in a pile of tr*sh.

The MC has a Sakata Gintoki vibe. Apparently the author was greatly inspired by this hero of Gintama.

The novel is moderately funny, in the best traditions of an anime script. The plot is interesting and well thought out.

In the end it was a pity that there were so few chapters. It's a shame that some kind of nonsense can continue for 500+ chapters, but a really good story... more>> ends quickly. <<less

I'm Seriously ADORE the story and its characters Sooo MUCH!!!

Like how Father Jiang being a Lazy Like father having a Weird Job but a Carefree Father. He let his Son doing the things he son feel need to do and help him behind the scene as much as he need. But also never revel his Son's secret nor his own identity.

Love how the Son doing the Shounen Protagonist-like adventure action was not because people ask him to do or him being righteous saint whatsoever or him feeling strong shameless confident... more>> whatsoever.
Spoiler

He and his friends doing all things Research and Action was to make a More Better Life and less Dangerous future for their Family's sake and safety😭❤️

[collapse]

Another Love is for the characters like Barbershop owner and Shi Bu ❤️

More Love is when MC and ML truly 'reunite'. All the Cuddlings!!!

I really pray sooooooo hard that the rest of the story would have a Satisfactory ending !!! Please please please author!!!

Finished at 31 January 2024:

Yes it ended in Satisfactory. In a way they get the Happily Ever After Ending as Family of Three ❤️ even when the world still have mysterious species.

But of course no Hole or Cliffhanger. The Main big Problem cleared as it should do.

Seriously love how our Son Chen Jing can finally see and feel that having new family member is not just to take care of his Father Jiang together, but also having another parents who drive him and pick him up from school. They're Truly Caring Family even without the Family Doting Fluff whatsoever. They're Fluffy in their own way. And it's as Precious and Meaningful!

Definitely LOVE The Characters and their Actions. It's WORTH IT and ABSOLUTE GEM and I'm FOREVER LOVING IT WITH MY ETERNAL LOVE AND SOUL FOR ETERNITY AND BEYOND IN ANY UNIVERSES!!! <<less

Rating: 4.5 stars.

It’s good and enjoyable. Gossiper, lazy, salted fish but extremely powerful MC x equally as powerful, cold, silent, warm-hearted ML x slightly less powerful, quiet, responsible (caretaker) son.

The one thing about this author is that they don’t info dump—everything (origins, past, mysteries) get unveiled gradually throughout the story. There’s going to be some confusion at first, because this story is told from a restrictive third point-of-view. You’ll be questioning the MC’s words—what is true and false—and questions you’ll have will probably be revealed later, but understandably so, than... more>> expected.

The MC really appears as if he has nothing going on for him for the first half of the novel, but as his past slowly gets revealed, it not only really makes sense why he is the way he is but you really feel for his character and how much he’s gone through. He’s a little bit of an unreliable narrator, but that also adds the charm of finding his origins.

The ML is quite the stereotypical captain who is cold and powerful, but you start getting curious about his unknown backstory due to his interactions with the MC throughout the story. You’re going to adore both character; the ML and MC are precious characters who’ve gone through a lot and deserve a happy ending.

Finally, the son (the protagonist) is respectful in his own light. Although not as powerful as the MC and ML, he is determined, diligent, and honest and such a crucial figure in keeping our MC in check with his bad habits. He may not be the focal point of the story, but you grow really fond of him (and the other characters). It’s also nice to see how the unreliable MC secretly has his son’s back in crucial moments while respecting his wish to explore the dangerous. All main characters (MC, ML, and son) are very caring and loyal in very very different ways and it makes you wanna hug them.

That’s my overall review~the story-telling is quite literal (telling with mixes of showing) but it strangely fits with the slice-of-life vibe we have going on. It’s hilarious but also poignant at certain moments, and it’s a great read for something light that packs a punch. <<less

I really liked this novel!

This story doesn't have a focus on romance, it's more like a slice of live, along with mystery and action, the romance is something more like a subplot of the story.

The author of this novel has created the personality of the characters very well, they all seem very alive and human, especially the ML, demonstrating emotions and making mistakes.

I loved the main and secondary characters, the mystery, the development of the story, each chapter was funny and great to pass the time, and the ending is... more>> super cute.

I just wish there was another book or explanations in the extras, about the infinite game itself, because the book talks about everything that happened next, which sometimes makes it seem that I lost an entire book before reading this one, but none of this causes any reading problems, it's just my wish, you can see that it was a conscious choice of the author, and honestly I find it very cool, is an extremely different dynamic of books with a clear timeline.

Sorry for the writing errors, English is not my first language, and even if I understand it well, writing is still complicated. <<less

It's really really good! Thanks to the translator and author for bringing us this awesome story!

Pros:

    • The MC kinda has the same vibes as the MC in "Bird Dude Nie Bufan" wherein he is playful, mischievous yet draws people to like him
    • I really like how each adventure isn't dragged on - whenever there are issues, it typically gets resolved in 1-3 chaps
    • I also like how the story didn't directly say how MC and his son became a family, what's really the deal between MC/ML etc (its like hidden gems that you fugure out as the story goes along)
    • I really love the interaction between MC and his son, also MC's interaction with the barber shop owner haha
Cons (not really bad, just things I wish for) :

    • If you're looking for a love story, this might not be it. Although the MC and ML have cute interactions (especially in extras), the ML is really just a side character and the romance is just a super sub plot. The story mainly focus on MC and how the game species get resolved
    • The story's like a cut out from their life - meaning we only get a glimpse of what really happened before the games and during the games - there are a lot of stories that didn't get told like what really happened in the games, where MC and ML a couple before the games, etc. (Anyway the story is still good but it's too short)
Overall:

    • If you're looking for a fun and interesting novel, read this!!!! You won't regret it
    • This novel deserves a lot of chapters! I wish we could have more of them
Recommendations: (these novels have similar vibes to this one)

  • Bird Dude Nie Bufan
  • Spirit Hotel
  • Fantasy Farm
  • Don't Discriminate Against Species

It's pretty late as of writing this right now so I'll keep it as simple as I can.

The brief description, as I was confused by the description—

First of all, the MC is a middle aged man (probably younger than that, perhaps in his late 20's?) is the stepfather of a young probably traumatized survivor of a collapsed Game. Over the years, missing people suddenly appeared at random places after the collapse of the genocidal "Game" that held them hostage. Various laws and subsidies has been passed to accommodate for these... more>> returnees.

Young underaged players/survivors were sent to an orphanage explicitly for them because they returned a little bit f*cked up (and as sad as this is, some families don't want to take them back, which is an ok action apparently??? Brb, let me beat someone up—). The son is exactly this type of survivor.

Anyway, the son (for some reason that remained to be clarified even after the ending) decides to join his two other fellow friends (and fellow survivors) in fighting the monsters that spilled out of the Game after it collapsed and so find out the truth. Basically, think Miraculous Ladybug but instead did magic it's just a bunch of teens with increased power after participating in a sadistic survival game that also condones mu*der once in a while.

The ML is the captain of a special department formed after the game collapsed (presumably, I'm actually not that sure) that specialise in dealing with monsters from the games. He's a workaholic, stern, powerful amnesiac.

Section below borders on spoiler territory ↓

The MC used to be the top players of the game, but for various reasons ended duo being a useless lazy drunkard. Idk if this counts as spoiler since the description kind of hinted it and also it's stated pretty early on.

So the MC knows his son is going to various dangerous escapades and watches over him silently.

ANYWAYY

Favourite character?

Easily MC, of course, I also like Lu Yiyi (I forgor his actual name). Not for any reason, but solely at the heartbreak I had when I read the line <"Turns out, he was the newcomer."> Like— wow.

But, the true MVP was actually the barber, perhaps the true barber was the friends we met along the way.

(Ok, seriously? It's our cute Shi Bu, our local dense rock <3)

While I wished there were more present and in the moment narration, I have nothing against the fast paced blurring writing of the author. If you read till the very end, I hope you react to the last line the exact same way I did. Because hot damn. Made my cold heart beat a little faster this late at night. <<less

This deserves a much higher rating!! It's a good pace of action and mystery. It's not perfect, there could be some areas of improvement. Like I wish we got more details on the Infinite Flow players and "games". We really only get some brief descriptions. But overall it doesn't prevent enjoyment. The MC is really funny, he's lazy, a gossiper, a drunkard, and OP!! The ML is taciturn, but gentle.

He does get questioned and suspected with his involvement in it all. Also the SIU has different branches/teams so not every single person that gets dispatched to the scene will recognize him from a previous case bc they might not have been there! But some do catch on.......

--such as the non-deaths. I suspected with Liu Cheng but not with the mermaid

[collapse]

the start was a little sudden though I enjoyed the pacing from there. It's not an incredibly long novel but that's a good thing--this way, it avoids dragging things out

the 'comedic undertone' tag isn't a lie. This is a story that feels as casual as its protagonist despite all the deaths and strange beasts running about.

the slice of life feel in the earlier parts is strong with the father and son going about their lives regardless of what they get up to behind the other's back.

in terms of relationships, character arcs, etc etc, you don't need to pull out a relationship chart for this. Main character aside, the rest are somewhat shallow, in the way that pokemon anime characters in the 2010s are shallow. There is depth, but not a lot. This is not a bad thing to me.

there are a few things revealed drip-fed style about the way the world handled the collapse of the game and how the characters dealt with it but most of that is kept a mystery for much of the novel--you will know everything you need to know by the end.

I quite like the main character. I like characters that make me smile. I wish the male lead had a bit more personality, but perhaps the stoic-ness is used to balance out the MC? The son has more personality--which is reasonable considering how much screentime he gets--and does the stoic thing better and is balanced out by his other friends as he acts as their leader.

all in all, solid stuff. Give it a go

side note:

when the other review pointed out the gojo satoru parallels I could not unsee it lol

I also wonder how much hair dye they've spent <<less

It was a good novel, I really liked all of the characters and enjoyed reading about their interactions BUT I didn't liked the way the author writes...

The format they choose it's just not for me, there were too many mysteries: the past of every one of the characters, the relationship between them, the game, the game's collapse, each case, even present actions by some characters were presented in a mysterious way and not explained until one or two chapters later, sometimes even longer...

I probably would have enjoyed the story... more>> more if everything was not so vague and mysterious... Sometimes it was hard to understand what was happening, and if it wasn't because I really like the characters I probably would have DNFed.

There were some things that were never explained and that brothered me a bit but overall the story was interesting. <<less

At it's core, this novel is a slice of life about an old (not really) dad watching his son grow while building a safe (relatively) environment to raise his son, forming friendships and community. It's impressive the author managed it in an infinite flow setting. Kudos

One star off for mislabeling the genre (romance was a subplot at best) and minor inconsistencies (do government employees regular hide reasons for broken transport???). Otherwise, this was a good read, with domestic fluff that wasn't boring.

• are the special investigation unit really a formal team under the government? They just act so informal and unprofessional. Like there is this dude who keeps wandering inside one disaster after another and they dont even bother to investigate his origins or just even think of considering his involvement in the deaths of the strange species or whatever. Also, there is this lack of.. idk, system on their division? They let people who have really... more>> low physical, supernatural power etc investigate places that are considered highly dangerous. They also let civilians wander around them even tho they clearly knew that this place is dangerous since A LOT of people already collapsed, disappeared, or died in this area without supervision even from the police or SIU. Like, look at that spider building or whatever, since there's already suspicion that a strange species is in there, why did you all not cordon the place off after the third time of people collapsing?? Until coast is really clear and investigation is done?? Like seriously man, do all of you from the game not really know any of the possible habits of monsters that you have encountered? Do you all not have databases and work from there?? Like if I remember correctly, you all have established this SIU team for a long time now and you dont have proper systems. I feel like this SIU teams only comes and work properly when MC is there and things have already been dealt with, jokes. But really, its so... Unnatural. There is also this thing about informing the higher ups of what is happening. These low ranking personnel tend to only inform the higher ups of what happened when they had already dived into the middle of the disaster. And not assessing the event at the moment too. YOU ALL NEED TRAINING AND A SYSTEM AND STRATEGY. LIKE REALLY. Theres just something off with this special investigation unit.

•this dude MC is so weird I dont know what his doing really. I know hes trying to do something but sometimes its contradictory.

•is there no government in here like people who would try to hinder the work of the people from the game or people who take commanding roles? But without power? And lash out from to them s*upid SIU.

Im still at ch 20-ish so it might still be too early to judge on a lot of things but anyway, try reading it, just turn off your brain from the s*upid decisions that they are making hahaah <<less

Status: Completed
Enjoyable novel, I would've liked for it to be longer or have more extras. MC, Jiang Yujin, is the most powerful person in the world and a super slacker. Although he seems uncaring, that isn't the case.

The "romantic subplot" is true but you can still tell that MC and ML, Xu Tonggui, are dedicated to each other. Their love isn't showy but ML constantly breaks character for MC. I liked that MC put his adopted son's feelings into consideration when making plans with ML.

Spoiler

The story starts of MC and his adopted son, Chen Jing, living together. CJ was an underaged player of the game and was adopted by MC after the game ended. CJ doesn't know that MC was also a player. Only a few people know his identity as 001, the game's top player.

Even though the game has ended, monsters (called strange species) within the game are appearing in the world. CJ and his friends are secretly trying to find 001 and the root cause for the monsters.

MC ends up bumping into these monsters and also an organization called Zero. Zero is researching the monsters and doing illegal human experiments.

SPOILER...

...

ML was player 002. He and MC were a couple before entering the game and met again in the game. However, ML was parasitized and ended up killing himself. This resulted in the game ending and scattering the players all over the world. At that time, MC believed that ML was still alive so he went around the world searching for ML for years. Until one day, MC's friend found out that ML was found by the Special Investigative Unit (SIU) and had been in a coma until waking up recently. But ML had lost his memory.

MC moved to the same city as ML but didn't contact him. This went on for years until the start of the novel. ML discovered the truth and pursued MC.

Later, it was revealed that Zero had found the "mother" of the strange species and that it was the root cause for their occurrence in the world. Zero initially wanted to profit from the "mother" but ended up being taken over by it since it can easily parasitize and control others.

In the end, Zero was destroyed. ML, MC, and son lived together. ML and son spoiled MC and worked together to curb MC's alcohol intake. 😝
