This review is for books 1 & 2 of the novel, not yet taking into account developments in the final part, book 3. I plan to update my review once it has been fully translated.
STORY: ★★★★☆
2ha focuses pretty heavily on the main relationship compared to the outside plot, but that doesn't mean a plot isn't present. In fact the plot makes itself known pretty dramatically in some crazy action scenes and twists. There's a lot of great worldbuilding concepts that I would have happily read more about. While I'm currently 2/3rds of the way through the story, there's a certain upcoming twist that I've been able to guess at thanks to some well-done subtle foreshadowing (confirmed by a friend who gave spoilers when I asked), but I'm looking forward to seeing how it pans out.
The pacing is sometimes a little uneven, with long stretches of fluff switching to rapid plot development. The angst and tragedy can be intense, but there's humor to lighten it up.
There's a lot of "uneven knowledge of each other" in the character dynamics as Mo Ran (MC) has time-traveled back from a possible future and has to keep that hidden, while on the other hand there's an extensive subplot where Chu Wanning (ML) gets de-aged into a child and bonds with Mo Ran with the other not knowing his identity.
CHARACTERS & ROMANCE: ★★★☆☆
I'm going to be honest, the dynamic of the main romance is a lot of fun and hits some tropes that I personally find super sexy, but isn't very realistic. Mo Ran was once a mu*derous evil overlord in his past life, now seeking redemption, and I think you could criticize his character development into a heroic figure as being too easy. I also felt that the romance development dragged for too long with Chu Wanning being a little too oblivious... but listen... the smut was worth it. You just have to know that you're in for something tropey and go along with it! I had a great time! Just be warned that this is not one for people who don't enjoy problematic dynamics and morally flawed main characters.
There are some fun side characters, but most are not developed too heavily. My favorite is the side romance subplot between two particular characters.
TRANSLATION:
The English translation by rynn & suika is well-written, but is currently only about halfway through the novel, and updates have been somewhat inconsistent. For the rest of the book, there's a "clean MTL" version you can find if you look it up that's been very thoroughly edited from MTL and makes for a serviceable reading experience, not much worse than a real translation.
and then next book the dog is started to recover from his semi-rabies virus and become a handsome youthful Grandmaster Dog, total simp after so many obstacles for him realize that the ML is not like he thought. While the ML, Chu Wanning ah Mr. Chu deserves the world. Seriously, a cinnamon roll but could kill you in a second (and horneesincloset).
His love toward the MC is so pure and it took him two lifetimes to finally get together with his loves one. BUT... the storm not just end up by the time MC finally confessing his love to the ML... Meatbun-sama not letting them get happily ever after yet.
The villain in this novel making the MC's previous body, TaxianJun as a living zombie and go to the MC and ML current world. And the climax began. The twist, the truth, everything is mind-blowing. I honestly, speechless, shocking, hurt, cursing, and having a tear-loss reading this story and I LOVE IT so freaking much. I recommended this story to you who can endure super angst.
The other MC is not as bad as you think, everything he did in a previous life is not because he wants to.
You will understand while reading this story, learning what he went through and why he ends up become Taxian Jun is all because all of his minds since the beginning was Chu Wanning.
In the extra, you can find how cute Taxian Jun is. Please do read all the chapters before judging by only seeing someone not agree about how is the plot/the characters are.
also the translator already putting a warning in every chapter for the trigger one.
At the beginning I was not so sure that I would like it, (spoilers) but as I keep reading it, I get so attached with all the characters, every single one is so It´s well written, they are profund characters, whit a darck side and a good one, whit weaknesses, that evolve, and they reflect on their actions and then try to improv.
The principal couple its so cute, they have such a nice romance, an that what makes me fall in love whit them, they actually have a ROMANCE, they have some kind of dates. (End of the spoilers)
i have not finish the novel, but it not for lack of dessire, I have even consider learn chiness to finish reading it. But I will wait patiently
