The Guide Who Maxed Out His Combat Skills

The young master of the Lin family, upon reaching eighteen, underwent the Sentinel pairing process, only to find his compatibility with all the Empire’s Sentinels at zero. Moreover, he was diagnosed with a deficiency in spiritual power. As a Guide without spiritual power, he became infamous across the galaxy overnight, a laughingstock of colossal proportions.

The Lin family paid a hefty sum to the noble academy to enroll him, out of sight and out of mind.

At school, the young master was ridiculed at every turn. He was everyone’s target, looked down upon, and easily insulted as a “good-for-nothing.”

Lin Fu, the transmigrator, faced with such circumstances, withdrew from the noble academy overnight, reclaiming his exorbitant tuition fees and knocking on the neighboring military academy’s doors.

The Sentinel who opened the door was dumbfounded, staring at the frail-looking little Guide before him.

Little Guide: “Hello, I’m here to attend the military academy.”

Artemis Military Academy had an addition to its ranks—a Guide without spiritual power.

The same individual who once became an interstellar laughingstock.

On the combined military training competition field, he piloted a mech, slashing through enemies with a dark, lightless steel giant, boldly confronting S-class Sentinels and securing the final victory, stunning the interstellar populace.

Everyone knew that Guides, with their fragile physiques, couldn’t pilot mechs or engage in frontline combat. Yet, this Guide was an exception.

After the training competition, the visiting Brigadier General was nowhere to be found.

Half an hour later, when he reappeared, his face bore a bright red slap mark.

Fellow officers who came to watch the competition were shocked at the sight of his face.

Great story, loved the pacing and the main pair. Lowkey kind of ended the novel feeling like no one deserved the MC saving them but ykyk

I like the story. It is a new take on how MC, the weak guide, works hard to be independent and strong. The ML is very supportive of the MC. I love how he dotes on the MC.

I read this long ago so I forgot the small details but this is a good read.

😭 I just realized I cl**ked the wrong amount of stars. It should be 4 stars.

Stopping at ch 57 to leave a review to help people decide whether or not to read. Not leaving a rating quite yet because I want to see how to romance plays out. A Sentinel/Guide story where established norms keep Guides from doing any fighting and while being actively encouraged by the government to stay away from the front lines of the fight against the Zerg. Putting aside the naturally inferior physicality, having more Guides on the front lines as support roles would be extremely helpful to the main fighting... more>> force of sentinels, and this contradiction of interests is just the first peek into a greater conspiracy that the finds himself MC transmigrated into.

The MC, with the fractured memories of his new body and the help of a system, quickly realizes that the poor situation of the og host is not simple and may have been set up with malicious intentions. Coming from some kind of conflict-heavy world, he decides to do what he knows best and physically fight his way to the top so he can escape the political intrigue that keeps coming after him. With the help of the system, he overcomes the barriers both biological and artificially placed upon him to become a military man. His unique mindset from coming from a different society, and a society steeped in constant warfare at that, means he quickly proves himself.

The meat of the story is training, mecha battles, and inadvertently uncovering more of a greater political conspiracy that the MC really doesn't want to be involved in. The original host of his body was unknowingly in the thick of it from the very beginning, and part of the MC's character development is switching his mindset from "just doing things to survive and avoiding this nonsense" to "if I'm going to be a political pawn, I'm doing it on MY terms, and I'm also becoming so powerful that no one can stop me from doing whatever I want" as he comes to care more about the world around him and takes on more responsibilities. He cares about the friend of the original body and keeps up contact with him, makes new friends and turns rivals into allies, isn't afraid to call in favors, and is willing to take risks - he's not the lone wolf type and his provocativeness moves the plot along.

ML is a typical OP c*cky guy who is used to having his way and teases the MC relentlessly. He's not the cold and overbearing type, though he does get jealous but tries to control it. His and the MC's relationship warms up but unfortunately he can't develop their relationship deeper and romantically how he wants because of how he acts, acting superficially and doing things however he wants without considering the MC's feelings. MC's feelings for him at this point are ambiguous but possibly in the "has feelings but oblivious to them" stage, but every interaction with the ML immediately shuts down any possibility of progress. He has his own baggage from noble family stuff and his heavy responsibilities which he never explains to the MC despite trying to get the MC involved with him. It seems like a cliche setup that could end up with the MC falling for ML without the ML undergoing the character development to deserve it, but the MC's stubborn resistance and potential growth to be his equal means there is some sort of chance for the ML to have a revelation and growth as a person, so we'll see.

Side characters have development and things going on in their lives that make than more than 2D supporters. There are a lot of timeskips of huge spans of time, like months at a time, but this is usually during training times or when not a lot plot-wise is going on, and the events are summarized and not just glossed over so the reader understands changes going on during that time. This means the duration of MC's growth, training, and education covers a realistic amount of time, as do the affairs of other people. It also means that the story keeps the plot moving. Even as he grows stronger both as a Guide and a physical fighter and slowly approaches OP the MC still needs solid allies, and his own unstable position that puts his personal safety at risk means that he can't just OP his way through his problems. Also, as of c57, he still doesn't understand his body's position in whatever the heck is going on in the tangled web of political conspiracies. This means that the story retains tension and conflict despite the MC getting so much stronger.

Tentative 4/5, not willing to give it that full score yet because I'm waiting for some things. I like ML's character but if he doesn't go through some character development not only will the romance with MC will fall flat but he will fall flat as a character. Also waiting for more revelations about the conspiracies as well. The pacing is mostly good, but sometimes details or snippets that could have been fleshed out get skipped over for the sake of moving the plot along, which could be a pro or con depending on your preference. Finally, not clear if it's the translation or not but some little things aren't explained explicitly enough for me to understand what is going on. Maybe the connotation is more clear in the og Chinese, or maybe it's the writing style, or maybe it will be explained in thoroughly later, who knows (speaking of the TL, asianovel has much more of the novel MTL'd than is linked on this site, so you can read up to c57 like me even though it isn't listed). <<less

Tbh, I wasn't about to review but for the sake of the person above, who has yet to "update/edit" their ratings I guess I'll give my 2 cents opinion on this novel. And spoiler alert:

Spoiler

I have yet to read it so please, do stay tuned for more updates on this review👍

Anyways, apart from this non-existent, weightless review of someone who hasn't even attempted read this as of yet, I'd like to say the "trope" seems familiar--Transmigrated/op MC conquering over the entire universe--a pretty common occurrence in CN novels. As an experienced NU dweller who has traversed through several CN novels, I'd like to see what else this novel has to offer to the audience except from the usual "helpless, weak, frail MC to MC beating the sh*t outta everyone" storyline.

ML transmigrated from a war zone to a weak Guide, escapes to a military academy filled with Sentinels, and proceeds to strengthen himself, dominate everyone else, and save the galaxy.

Pros: For an interstellar guide-sentinel novel, I've read a lot worse. At least here the ML is strong, determined, works hard, and is very smart (I'm a sucker for omegas or guides who can fight...). The basic plot requirements are all present, from military academy competitions to noble conspiracies to mad scientists to space pirates.

Cons: Every villain was part of a... more>> huge conspiracy that felt too big and ended too quickly. For the good guys, I wish there were more character development, more time spent on the plot, and the whole novel wasn't as rushed. One of the best parts of the novel was the underground competition story arc where detail and care was put into the plot.

Similar, but better developed novels that I'd suggest: "Smash All Pots and Pans To Go To School", and "I Rely On Wilderness Survival". <<less

This is basically another ABO interstellar story with the weak MC showing that omegas can be just as strong as alphas except with sentinels and guides as alphas and omegas respectively. And no phermones I guess, but the whole guides being weak and sentinels being strong really gives me ABO vibes, as there's really no actual guideverse going on otherwise.

MC basically never guides and sentinels in this world don't actually seem to need guiding (like there's no mention of sentinels losing control without a guide in the entire story, unless... more>> I missed something??). To be fair, guideverse is basically fuel for PWP so it's understandable the author didn't want to go too much into it haha!

Honestly not sure what the guideverse is even doing here except to give MC the ability to faceslap everyone for underestimating him for being supposedly in a weaker body.

Author seems to have wanted to write an ABO alternative feminist story but didn't want pheromones so they went for guideverse, but didn't put any effort into building that world. Rather, this story has spiritual companions, or animals that manifest from a sentinel or guide's spiritual powers. They don't serve much of a purpose than being cute though to be honest.

ML is a bit of an inconsistent character, and his first few appearances took me aback by how different he was from his initial introduction, but I soon got used to him. The romance isn't the main focus of the story anyway, so his role isn't that important, at least not in the first half.

I wasn't really rooting for him but I also wasn't against him either- he was just kind of there. The interactions between him and MC mostly just confused me. Like the first few scenes of them kissing I was just like... alright, moving on...

They do get cuter together after some time though, so it's mostly just that the relationship development is chronologically slow and scattered but develops pretty quickly when they actually get scenes together (which is pretty rare until the latter half).

I would say the way that ML grows on MC is like a weed- not really wanted but also very hard to get rid of, pops up out of nowhere usually without warning, and turns out to be nicer than expected when it does bloom. Main problem is probably ML lacking much real depth to his character, and MC's emotions being pretty surface level throughout the novel, not just in terms of romance but overall.

The confession
Spoiler

in Chapter 85 though, that was cute as hell. Honestly after this point the romance is really sweet, it's just the buildup to this point was a little emotionally unsatisfying.

The TL is vaguely edited MTL but it's still mostly readable, and fully translated, which I appreciate. It's overall a pretty quick read, with some time jumps spread throughout. The plot progression is a little strange (and rushed) as the time skips aren't really well laid out, but it's comprehensible, so long as you pay attention.

Overall I'm not too impressed by this one, but it was entertaining enough for me to finish, mostly because I wanted to see how the author was going to resolve the romance subplot, and as with most other reviews I've read, I found it just a bit lacking. <<less

Hmm, simply put, this story is basically a feel good OP MC novel where you have to kinda just turn your brain off at some moments to just enjoy the story and go with the flow.

Both the MC and ML are lovable, with honorable characters (although some audience may find the age gap between them a bit icky and the fact that ML kissed MC like, two times without MC's consent uncomfortable, I personally think MC did well standing his ground and when he was pissed/uncomfortable he made sure to... more>> make it clear to ML, so yeah, MC doesn't need the readers defending him).

The MC is strong, brave, resolute and ruthless at times but he's also gentle and caring towards his precious ppl. Whereas ML is equally strong, dependable, Patient and Respectful of MC when it truly matters (ML has a bit of a playful character so he likes to tease MC but other than that, whenever MC stood his ground, he never bulldoze over him, and he NEVER coerced MC, only coquettishly pursue him, so yeah, totally a green flag, although he does admit that he was a bit of a hooligan for falling for MC who's much much younger than himXD).

However, I admit that the plot leaves much to be desired with loopholes everywhere and a very very rushed ending along with chronically ret*rded villains... Many extras (like MC's childhood friend, MC's close friends, seniors and teachers from Artemis Academy, MC's aunt, MC's siblings and the Harveys, Qi and Laine families) were just... well, forgotten and many exciting subplots (like human evolution, humanoid zergs and the conspiracy between the zergs and the upper echelons) and mysteries (system, Cheng Su, poison used to incapacitate OG Lin Fu) were introduced only to be left without conclusion at the end...

So yeah, quite dissappointed by the ending and the rushed plot with unresolved questions but I really like the MC and ML's characters along the sweet development of their relationship. I sincerely think the author could have still salvaged this story with lots and lots of extras but I guess they must have been faced with an author's block near the end of this story resulting in a rapid decline in plot quality in the last 1/3 of the story.

But I think this story deserve a chance at least, if only coz of the healthy relationship between MC and ML and the bromance in the early and middle part of this story^^ <<less

Everything seems really flat. The character's opinions don't develope. The villains are mean the whole time and the MC has complete plot armor so his growth is somehow underwhelming. The system doesn't even talk that often, It's felt rushed since the first chapter. He did martial arts in his past life or something, but it's not mentioned until he needs to prove himself in class, and no one else in the spage age military uses a traditional fighting technique other than instinct, which is unbelievable. The years of training that... more>> they get is just having the new fighters try to hit the old fighters all at once. They've just been like "okay, fight me" for a millenia as they dominate the stars. <<less

The middle half saved the novel from getting a mere 2 stars.

First 30 chapters was speed pacing, it was more like auto typed and no emotional writing and there was no explanation on who is this, and why is what happening.

The middle was better with more plot and battles, more excitement and bonding. Though some people we should be seeing again was never mentioned again in the latter half.

This was because they rushed the ending with the latter half and it just trying to make sense, we put the idiot... more>> uncle as the biggest villain as so s*upid.

I love MC for his determination and grit (someone give him blood pills how much blood his lost the whole novel?, ML I just find him slimey, frivolous and weird. The romance was not even emotionally driven. I find they were rather forced together because they have to by plot because of the genre.

No other characters were memorable, because they are forgotten to show up for rush reasons.

This was good but was rushed, had potential but wasn't expanded properly. <<less

Rating: 3.5/5

Honestly, the story itself is fine, not overly complicated nor too boring. I also like the MC as I like my MCs op and level-headed. I feel more conflicted about the ML as he started liking the MC when the younger was still only 18, basically still a child in their society as the average lifespan is 200. No idea what the age gap is, but still sus af imo. At least his character seems to be okay to an extent, very supportive and protective, not toxic, although his... more>> take on consent is very ambiguous since he did kiss the MC without consent several times. He is neither a green nor a red flag. I would say he is beige.

There are also a few issues with the plot. It moved rather fast, oftentimes skipping details, be it locations, time or events that would have added context or made the story flow more easily. The ending was also a bit too rushed for my taste.

Then there is the issue with side characters falling off the earths surface, basically disappearing, never to be seen or spoken of again, even though I had expected them to play more important roles as the author had written them like that.
Spoiler

Like the MC's guide childhood friend. He appeared in the beginning, dropping by via video call a few times and then disappeared for the rest of the story. The MC's sentinel trio friends also kinda lost their role towards the end, basically being forgotten shortly after the MC became the legion commander. I was disappointed to say the least as I liked their dynamic with the MC.

[collapse]

Continuity itself seems to be a problem not only with characters disappearing, but also with issues remaining unresolved.
Spoiler

What happened with the issue of Albert's unexpected grade jump and the ensuing susceptibility to mental outbreaks? What about the promise that the MC gave to principal Carl that he would deliver Lin Sicheng to him so he could take revenge personally? Why invite the aunt to the imperial star for the grand finale only for her to not play a role at all?

[collapse]

The inconsistencies were not limited to the storyline itself. The translation only added to it by constantly switching and changing pronouns, names, military ranks and repeating paragraphs which, needless to say, was confusing and annoying.

I did manage to finish though so that's a plus, I guess as I don't always manage to finish reading a story before jumping to another novel out of boredom. <<less

The story 3.5/5

The translation 2/5

This is MTL with barely (if there is any) editing done. The names are inconsistent, the pronouns are wrong most of the time for the female characters. There are double paragraphs, one the edited ver and the other is the original unedited MTL. Still readable and bearable, this coming for me who really don't like reading MTLs.

It is full of power struggle in military and politics, also dirty schemings in royal and noble families. The ending is somewhat unsatisfying, and I don't read the rest of... more>> the extras (can't find the translated ones). <<less

The novel was okay. It was somewhat interesting but MC, Lin Fu, and ML, Cheng Jiu, never came to "life" for me. So I wasn't able to lose myself in the story.

The romance between MC and ML could've been better. Some incidents don't pass the logic test. The ending was abrupt, glossing over major events. Overall, I'm neutral about whether or not to recommend it.

REAL SPOILERS...

...

The original owner of MC's body was not born with a spiritual deficiency but was actually actually poisoned by his family. He was assessed to be a super high level talent when he was a baby. So they wanted to kill him because they thought he was a threat.

There is a conspiracy that the royal family and Council were colluding with the Bugs. They were afraid that MC would grow up and would be powerful enough to eliminate the Insect Queen. However, I don't understand why they decided to let poison slowly kill him.

It's an enjoyable read!

I think it became a fast/quick paced story in the middle to end of the story, and there are some forgotten characters once in a while?

But at least it's still good!

Spoiler

As usual in novels, the MC and ML sometimes have a dominant one in teasing or starting the relationship, and the way it is in the novel is already often used, I can't seem to get used to it :")

The ML love to tease the MC even after rejected, like that

I don't know if this is considered spoiler so I just put it here :)
