The Green Tea’s Crushing Victories in the ’70s

Tong Xuelu had the nickname Queen of Green Tea.

She was stunning in looks, has a shapely body, and had a lot of suitors, although she had never been in any serious relationships.

By the time she was done being a green tea and was about to be a nice person, her retribution had caught up to her!

She had transmigrated into a book. Into the 70s where materialistic goods were rare and she was a poor soul who was the fake daughter of a wealthy family!

Per the story, she would be face slapped by the real daughter who was rebirthed, be married to an old man who had once been married, and finally die from domestic violence.

Tong XueLu: ……I’d rather continue to be a green tea.

Raise three bosses of the future and be a salted fish such that all she had to do was to lay around and wait for things to be handed to her. [check]

Cheat her way into a government-run restaurant and have good food every day. [check]

Use her agility and wit to avoid being faceslapped by the real daughter. [check]

As far as an excellent green tea was concerned, she would be able to handle any scripts handed to her and still end up the winner.

***

Wen Rugui, a physicist, was young, handsome and had his entire life ahead of him. He had, however, let his research distracted him from starting a family.

All of his bosses were eyeing him to become part of their family.

Until one day.

Wen Rugui brought a charming girl into his research facility and with love in his eyes announced, “This is my fiancee. We are here to report our upcoming matrimony.”

His bosses: Shocked beyond words.

His female colleagues: All hearts are broken.

Tong XueLu: Sorry, all. My charm is but a passive skill.

One of the best novels I've read in its genre. I especially love the female MC. The best portrayal of a strong female lead that actually solves the majority of her problem herself.

Not bad.

What I really like about this story is there's no cheat like system or magical space.

But I think the story can be polished more. MC's life is too smooth sailing, and some part need more detailed plot.

MTL: about 3.5☆ readable enough.

Review: 4.5☆ good read ❤

Spoiler

It didnt take the usual route of other novels in this era like selling things in the black market to be rich. They go to work. They get rich slowly too. Issues come their way and its good at keeping readers at their toes. I love the novel's concept of a green tea female protagonist. She's not the goody two shoes. She's smart, feisty, scheming and cunning but definitely not in the bad way. I like that everytime someone wronged her, she would most likely plot to send them to jail (or to farm for rehabilitation in this era). They dont kill the antagonist personally, but through the justice system with true evidence. I like that some antagonist died on their own. There are times that she's powerless, but she will surely beat people back, and sometimes on a weird way. The novel is not heavyly focused on just romance, but well rounded. There are bits of her in family-siblings interactions, workplace, school, business, friends, romance with ML, etc. Alot of cooking at the first half. I like that problems come up every now and then. Problems are also not easy peasy. I like that it happens just when things started to slow down and relaxing. Problems come up and you will be wondering how she would solved it.

I love ML, for being the shy and innocent one. Especially when MC is the one who will always take advantage and eat his tofu. I love how MC is the green tea and ML is the cold face with a sharp tongue. And I feel awful for ML when it was slowly revealed how he was treated when he was a a child and when his mental state collapses.

The brothers and sister of MC is adorable, specially MianMian. MC and ML's kids are superduper adorable. The girl inherited ML's cold face and sharp tongue. While the boy inherited MC's green tea attitude 😂. Lots of cute kids moment, there's alot of funny moments with ML and his friends too.

Writing/Translation: 4/5

The translation I read is from fringe capybara from C1 to C388. The rest I read in MTL using Google Translate. The TL is pretty good. It's just that each chapter is broken up into short bites, so it's quite annoying to always have to click on the next chapter. The MTL, this was the easiest story to MTL I’ve ever read. Even when the sentences are so garbled, I can still easily understand what they mean. The flow of reading barely had any pause lol.

... more>> Pacing: 3.9/5

The pacing was pretty smooth, except for a few instances at the end. Near the end, there were a lot of time skips, so it was a little jarring and weird. But this is normal with CN web novels so...

Plot: 4/5

This was pretty fun. Although it wasn't a farming poor to rich story set in the 70s that I love, it was still a super nice poor to rich story with a good romance and a nice face-slapping story. The starting point of the MC is low and she upgrades her family's quality of life pretty quickly, but it was still interesting to see the MC’s actions in dealing with other people and setting up for her future successes. She does make a point to make money, although she doesn't really go into detail about constantly selling stuff like in other stories. But all her actions are done with the focus of improving their lives, so people who like that will like this.

I only wish the final end of all the bad guys weren't decided to get the worst end in just like two sentences. They spent years of labor on the farm and next thing we knew, they were dead there. On one hand, it is pretty nice to know that for once, the bad guy is dealt with once and for all. On the other hand, this meant the author had to come up with new bad guys. I have an issue with the last bad guy. The whole thing with the friend turned jealous idiot that turned traitor to the country felt kind of out there and not a big enough villain to end the story with. I thought the mother would be that but she died earlier than this girl.

Romance: 4/5

The romance is nice. The ML is pretty cute haha.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 4/5

The setting is different than normal. It's in the capital city from the start but the story is still a poor to rich story. Normally, the capital is the final destination haha. We also get some different settings than normal, like state-run restaurants and scientific research stuff. Also, military.

Characters: 4.5/5

The main characters are all very good. There is chemistry and life in them. No one was really generic, except maybe the greedy relatives. The stars are all the kids haha. They are hilarious in a childish way. I admit that I thought they would play a more important role later on because at the start, there was some focus on their endings previously but they were kinda in the background later. But, ah well haha.

Personal Enjoyment: 4.5/5

I enjoyed it very much. It was one of the few better 50-80s-era story I’ve read.

At first, I think the ML and the FL wasn't quite a match or maybe because I was just used to an assertive type of ML. I also stopped reading it about 92 chapters as it wasn't complete yet and I don't have the patience to wait haha

Anyways, I pick it up all again now. And I can say that their dynamics is good and I actually like the ML very much. Aside from him, doing everything for the FL, what I like the most is when he realized that... more>> if a girl (that not the FL) is trying to make a moved on him he would totally break their fantasy and be straightforward about how he didn't like them.

P.S. Still not completed so might edit it later

Edit; 06/21/2023

So, I decided to read in MTL and finished it.

I don't really know how to articulate my review concisely but here's my review after finishing the whole story:

First of all, I just want acknowledge the plot twist near the end

where
Spoiler

ML was revealed to be actually suffering from schizophrenia. Altho, if you observe it all throughout the story you'd actually see some clues, but idk I have a theory that maybe the author doesn't know how to make a transition of ML from being shy and reserved one to a kind of domineering ML? Tho, I'm not sure about it but coming from FL's POV wherein she said that ML became more possessive of her? Or something near that.

[collapse]

Next, the small details, as I said in my earlier review I kinda feel like the romance between the FL, Tong Xuelu, and the ML, Wen Rugui, isn't an emphasis and also the romance factor is lacking but
Spoiler

reading further more in the story, I realized that they're quite sweet and full of love. Though, maybe what gives me that kind of thought in the beginning is because their love language was quite subtle, you wouldn't notice it at first but you observe you'll have that kind of sweet feeling in you.

[collapse]
Xuelo learns that Rugui like fish, so after (although even before they did) they confirmed their relationship you could observe all throughout the story that everytime Rugui is at home or Xuelo goes to his workplace, she would always cook fish in different kind of dishes which is just so sweet

or for Rugui, since he doesn't really know how to pursue a girl or be romantic at all, he would try to learn from people around him and writing notes about it which is in my eyes it's like wanting to make a memo about it or it was that important to wrote it down. Altho, Huang Min's advice was quite funny tho, it went well for the ML most of the time but Zhou Yan? He's funny guy

and never learns actually cause every HM's advice most probably failed him yet he always obeys it. Yet it was quite commendable that he's going that far just to pursue his girlfriend, knowing that era where patriarchy is prevalent.

Next, let's talk about certain side characters:

  1. Gu Yilan
    Spoiler

Idk if I remember her name correctly but I just realized with her character that naive characters are actually more annoying than the antagonists. I really hate her in the part where she actually tried to doubt her husband and Xuelu, it's given but Xuelu at that time is comitted to Rugui already. Also, it adds to the fact that maybe she was coax by Tong Zhenzhen. I mean why would you believe someone you know for like days or a week over someone you know that is a good person even before you met her. Okay, let's say it's the lack of communication that's why she wasn't close with Xuelu but she was already betrayed by someone she knew since childhood, I think enough to actually be more wart with people around you. Anyways, good thing it ends well for them and maybe that already teach her a lesson.

    [collapse]
  2. Jiang Baihui
    Spoiler

Again, I'm not sure about the spelling of their names but I just want to say that this character really come so far before she let her horns out. When her character was introduced I'm actually already wary of her, but since she's got so far in the story I feel like maybe she's not that bad, and yet again near the end, she was revealed to be an antagonist.

    [collapse]
  3. Jiang Baihui and Liang Tianyi
    Spoiler

As I said in the review above, I thought that maybe their character are like supporting protagonist? I mean something like that cause I'm actually very positive about them as the story goes, not until the wedding of Xuelu and Rugui. Jiang Baihui shows like a little signs of blackening which I hope doesn't happen as I go in reading and I was bound to be disappointed unfortunately
I actually think that maybe they could be like our FL and ML but now that I think about it, I feel like maybe their character are build just so to make an comparison between them and the protagonist as if you observe it, both pairs are quite similar. Rugui being part of the research affairs same as Liang Tianyi and Xuelu being a foreign language student same as Jiang Baihui. In addition, I feel like it wasn't unreasonable for Liang Tianyi to commit that mistake as he has an expectation already. I mean, he was being hired for higher position outside his country, but he chose to be patriotic and comeback yet they made feel like his accomplishment wasn't given an importance.

    [collapse]
PS. Can't write anymore, I'll continue tomorrow or some other time.

Edit;06/23/2023

So, let me just finished my review.

I just want to say that I always think about it whenever the FL did something out of ordinary like not totally like that but something like:
Spoiler

her saving the siblings (Tong Xiaoming, Tong Jiaxin, Tong Mianmian) with their supposed to be destiny after Tong Zhenzhen's rebirth or saving Xiao Jiu from his kidnappers.

[collapse]
Idk but I overthink what would be the natural thing that would happened. What do I mean by natural? Like what would have happened in those cases that wasn't supposed to happened if she didn't transmigrate nor would TZZ rebirth. The sibling's future have been told but what about Xiao Jiu?

Would he be saved? Or whatever? Anyways, I'm just curious about it haha!

Also, I would like to add that I didn't realize that the novel has the slice of life tag in it. Maybe that's why I'm a little bit shock when Rugui's grandpa shows signs of aging and how they were told in the novel

I mean that's normal to happen but it's just unexpected for me that the author actually added that little detail. Also, their end in the first life was just so

Speaking of it, I just remembered, so amidst reading the story I realized that Uncle Zong, even though somewhat a servant? Or something like that of Rugui's grandpa, I realized that he was there along way the story yet we don't have any background of his character nor his family. But at the same time I thought about it, the next moment revealed characters telling them they're Uncle Zong's family which of course wasn't true unfortunately

Anyways, I'm not sure if the MTL's not just completed or it wasn't actually told what would happen to some side characters. Like for example, FL's friend which is Fang Jingyuan or her brothers and sister, I'm so invested with her sister, Tong Mianmian, story. I'm just curious if TMM and Xiao Jiu ended up together and if so, how?

Cause their story is just so cute and can be even make to be another book.

Anyways that's it haha <<less

The character that I really like was the 3rd sibling of the MC. He was funny and thankful. Even though he loves designing, he give up just to follow the steps of his grandpa. Luckily, his wife had a fashion business, so his talent was not totally wasted.

Overall the story was good. It had the good flows from beginning till the end. It wasn't bad at all. Each characters had specific roles.

It was not bad to try reading this novel.

This is my second time reading this novel! The first time, I didn’t have the chance to write a review. I enjoyed it the first time around and read it till the end, this time, I only read up to the 110th chapter, but I dropped it not because I disliked it but because I remember the novel a bit too well XD. So it’s not as exciting as the first time. Anyway, I consider is a pretty good read. Very much worth it for the characters alone. And, as... more>> far as story being set in the 1970s go, it’s very unique because it’s not centered on village life.

_________

SUMMARY: FL, Tong Xuelu, transmigrates into a novel as the fake daughter of the Tong family. When she transmigrated, the reborn real daughter has already revealed her identity, leading to the original owner hanging herself and being replaced by the FL. ANYWAY, not wanting to become the real daughter’s punching bag, the FL decides to split and live with her biological family (of which only her younger siblings are left). Along the way, she encounters the ML (Wen Rugui) time and again — purposefully, as the ML has facial blindness that doesn’t work on MC.

As mentioned, this novel is set in the 70s, but it’s a little different from the ones I’ve read previously. Mostly due to the focus being on urban living rather than rural living (lots of similar novels start in a village, but this one has them smack down in the Capital City, offering a different perspective of the times).

_________

THOUGHTS: Actually, the author makes a lot of bold moves. Especially with the main characters. The FL is not the shy and stubborn idiot that you see almost everywhere else. She’s pretty shameless and doesn’t hesitate to get what she wants. In contrast, the ML is portrayed as soft and shy. I love this aspect of the novel most, since the two characters are shown to interact quite a bit. Well, ACTUALLY, most of the important characters here are a lot of fun and quite memorable (not including the cannon fodders and villains, of course. They’re pretty wretched in this story). I recommend reading this for the great interactions between the characters as well as the unique era perspective. It’s a bit dramatic sometimes, there’s always something happening and things become w but overly ridiculous every now and then. But overall, it’s fluffy, sweet, and very satisfying to read. Oh, the MTL is 70-75% readable. The names are fine, some slang doesn’t translate correctly though. And the banter doesn’t always come across right (I’m looking forward to rereading this when the TL is completed!) As for the rating... this novel deserves 4 stars! At least 4.25/5. <<less

I really enjoyed this novel, through all its journey, it didn't feel rushed but fast paced, with not whatsoever filler. The author kept the plot, balancing the elements of Genres in this novel and connecting them so well, in the end making it a half-Josei genre.

Especially, the characters, not only the FL and the ML, but others as well, they felt fleshed out. It really helped to read the novel through different pov's, leading to still being interesting.

Overall, I do recommend it. The MTL is 80-85% understandable.

P.S.
Spoiler

There are bed scenes, which are a bit detailed of the bed scene's aftermath

After reading few transmigration novel on 70's era, I think that the 1st qualification is one should be expert in cooking.

One of the 70's novel that I love reading. One that this set different with other, is the character of the main ML, or should I say, his health condition. I genuinely surprised that this type of novel can dishes this kind of character, and the way it built the tension is done well.

The ending also satisfying.

This one of the few novels where there is actually character development. The MC is shown logical and a person with iq which is rarely seen. She uses the opportunity presented to her and makes best use of it. Loved the romance, it is at very nice pace and very realise so you actually feel it. Its worth a read

pretty good, especially for this genre. Honestly, she's barely even a green tea to be honest more so just opportunistic

some of the social interactions are really weirdly written like how could this possibly happen IRL, especially with the ML. He's a little too overbearing for my taste but it's still pretty sweet

has typical chinese novel problems with racism/chauvanism/misogyny/anti-lgbt+ stuff

as usual I find it strange how quickly an MC adapts to very more conservative and prejudiced social environment

Sooo good, good familial relationships, good romantic relationships, so many comedic moments.

FL is kinda too OP and lots of nationalism stuff but I mean it was manageable to read.

Fave character with honestly the most personality is FL’s brother Tong Jiaxin, he was actually the best fleshed out character to me, minus the fact that he’s a typical middle child.

... more>> Even FL’s buddies are good, tho the ML’s gang of dum dums are too cute and funny.

It was an interesting enough read so far, but as cliche calls for it, the FL is basically invincible and has the best opportunities fr! Which is honestly fun.

I can give it a 4.35/5 <<less

It’s definitely slice of life and nothing felt like a major upheaval even with the faceslapping plots. Which ended up fairly satisfying. I sort of expected more entertainment based on the title but it’s fine. The relationships (all of them - romance, family, friends) is cute.

i had been looking for something to read for ages, I deliberately avoided any novels set in the 70/80/90's but despite all that I curiously clicked the novel and was further intrigued but also slightly discouraged by the 'green tea' label of the protag since im not really a fan of that sort of protagonists. Despite that, noticing the high 5 star and 4 star rating from 120+ people and the interesting reviews made me read this.

THIS NOVEL DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!!! It's just way too good, the MC is great... more>> the ML is even cuter and the plot was so stable with great flow to boot. Although i'd say in some regards the plot/protagonist halo was too much in some situations but it's all good.

i just think its so rare to have non-farming/villagers in the 70/80/90's vibes. It was intriguing to see things apart from farming and black-market business alone. Though the cliche of moving ahead with cooking remains it was done in an extremely novel way that was fun and easier to read. In short it was fun and entertaining despite having all my prejudice against it I was totally drawn to the story. Though imo while the MC does act like a green tea especially in the earlier bit of the story she also acts like a black lotus and prianhana. <<less

It was great at the start but towards the middle half, it turned into a soap opera. No dog blood between the MCs, but the villains/villainesses in this CN are just really vicious and s*upid that made me rate this a 3 ☆. I was able to finish this tho because cliche's do work. But for me the quality of this novel is average.

Spoiler

Unexpectedly for a supposed romantic CN, the body count is staggering. Almost all of the MC's enemies were killed. The tone of this novel felt off where the MC's happy family life is fluffy with pink hearts (despite ML's sickness) but the lives of her enemies were all coated red.

I hope my review is understandable, but writing it using Google Translate to make it into English, so I can't be sure.

Okay, first of all: I liked the novel. I found the approach different from most novels as soon as I saw it – since while our MC is a bit Mary Sue, I don't think her accomplishments are all that impossible. Her main skills are just two: ... more>>
Spoiler

she cooks very, very well and is skilled at dealing with people

[collapse]
. Both abilities she got in her first life, in which she was a green tea. I saw one person commenting that she also managed to remember how to build an induction cooker at a certain point in the novel, but that's not what I understood when I read it. I had understood that she drew the APPEARANCE of said stove and described what it should do, so that ML and her friends, all researchers, could figure out how to do it.

About her accomplishments, the things she does, like moving up "fast" in a job, taking first place in a national exam, etc., are all explainable. She moves up the job quickly because she knows exactly how to best deal with each person and is skilled at what she sets out to do, which after her first job, is mainly
Spoiler

cooking and managing people

[collapse]
(her main skills). As for the first place in the exam, the MC herself said in the novel that she wasn't really a genius and that she only got it because she studied well in advance and she already had the knowledge from decades into the future, which was much deeper than that of the MC. 70s, and she chooses a course that she knows she will be able to follow, since although she got high marks in all subjects on the exam, she understands that if she chose a course like chemistry or mathematics, for example, it would get progressively more difficult and she wasn't really a genius, contrary to what her placement and score would suggest.

The romance with ML was cute and well-constructed, too, and even though this isn't my favorite type of ML, I quite enjoyed it. He is very dedicated to the MC and truly loves her, in addition to always putting her first (if he had to choose between her and their children, for example, he would choose her) and not accepting anyone talking bad about her or mistreating her.. MC's brothers are also adorable and the family she meets and her friends are great for her (I'll never forget when she asked one of her friends if he could "handle" two people for her and he understood that she wanted that he KILLED both people, and he still agreed. Luckily the MC realized he had misunderstood and cleared up the misunderstanding, but I thought it was very sweet of him and this is easily one of my favorite moments in the novel).

As for the plot: the first half of the novel is mostly focused on MC's brothers and their changing jobs and the second half on the romance with ML and other plot devices. Although the biggest job evolutions occur in the first half of the novel, MC is developing and undertaking until the end, having even gone to college (that's why she took the exam that came in first place).

That said, I think the novel's synopsis might be a little misleading. The plot isn't really related to her being a green tea and the slap in the face isn't as dramatic as you might think. Although she possesses green tea abilities (her understanding of people and the ability to play innocent even when she is not), this is mostly used at the beginning of the novel and only when necessary. She won't hurt anyone who doesn't bother her: her philosophy is to leave everyone alone unless they come to bother her and her family. The plot with the royal daughter and the family is very small and easily resolved. MC's main focus is to take care of her brothers, have her business and get rich and ML himself (which yes, she really loves and knows it, in addition to treating him very well too). Another point I consider to say that she is not so mary sue either is that even though she gets rich there are still things she can't afford easily and still needs to save and wait before purchasing.

There are a lot of antagonists and it can be a little tiresome, plus not all plots are necessary (the last one, with MC's old college friend and her husband for example, for me wasn't really necessary, although I understand it might have been a way for the author to show how one's path can go astray if one is not careful). Because it's a relatively large novel for a relatively simple theme, there are a lot of plot devices as someone has already mentioned in another review (real daughter vs fake daughter, poor to rich, kidnapping, betrayal, mental illness as a plot device, powerful family and lost that comes out of nowhere, etc). Also, there is a lot of nationalism in this story, a lot. All that baggage of putting the country first, being patriotic and loyal to the country, etc. Many people are shot, too, having committed crimes and received the death penalty. Remember, it's China in the 70's.

In summary, I liked the novel and I even recommend it, but I wouldn't read it again and would like to rate it as 3.9 instead of 4 stars, since there are things that bothered me a lot. <<less

This is the only reason why I created an account. I read this novel because I'm curious and because it's based on 1970's. Then, I realized that I already reading MTL and got hooked up. The novel is interesting and I even have to find the missing Side Stories and damn, I started crying when I read the ending.

It's been a while since I reviewed a story. And all I can say is that this story is really good. (^.^) It made me happy, cry, sad, angry, frustrated.. It also gave me a glimpse of life from the 70's. I'm glad the FL transmigrated. I didn't expect that ML was abused by his own mother when he was a child and it's good that FL is there to help him get pass that trauma. I'm happy that he was able to have a good life with his loving... more>> family. (^ω^)And their children are all cute. I'm also relieved that the life experience FL's brothers and sister deviated from the original one and they were also able to have a good life. (。・ω・。) At the end, ML was together with FL.
